Dense SnO2 ceramics were obtained by doping with ZnO concentrations varies from 0.5 to 5.0 mel. The obtained powder was isostaticaly pressed to 210MPa in cylindrical shape and sintered from ambient to 1.500 degrees C using constant heating rate of 10 degrees C/min. Densities above 97% were obtained depending on the ZnO doping concentration. A maximum density was reached with the addition of 2 mol%. It can be concluded from shrinkage data and the observed microstructure obtained by SEM that the solid solution limit for ZnO in SnO2 is about 1.0 mol%. Above this concentration the formation of a second ceramic phase is observed.

The effect of Cu2+ contents and of firing temperature on sintering and crystallite growth of nanocrystalline SnO2 xerogels was analyzed by thermoanalysis (mass loss (TG), linear shrinkage, and differential thermal analysis (DTA)), X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD), and EXAFS (extended X-ray absorption fine structures) measurements. Samples were prepared by two methods: (a) coprecipitation of a colloidal suspension from aqueous solution containing both Sn(IV) and Cu(II) ions and (b) grafting copper(II) species on the surface of tin pride gel. The thermoanalysis has shown that the shrinkage associated with the mass loss decreases by increasing the amount of copper. The EXAFS measurements carried out at the Cu K edge have evidenced the presence of copper in substitutional solid solution for the dried xerogel prepared with 0.7 mol % of copper, while for higher concentration of doping, copper has been observed also at the external surface of crystallites. The solid solution is metastable and copper migrates toward the surface during firing. The XRPD and DTA results have shown a recrystallization process near 320 degrees C, which leads to crystallite growth. The presence of copper segregated near the crystallite surface controls its growth.

PLZT(9/65/35) obtained by association between the Pechini method (ZT) and partial oxalate (PLZT) was prepared. The stoichiometric phase and monophasic (cubic) PLZT obtained by calcination did not occur after sintering. The sintering process, by using two stages, caused a liquid phase formation due to a PbO excess (5 and 10 wt%). Samples with high density (similar to 8 g/cm(3)) and optical transparency(similar to 12%) were obtained. However, an equilibrium between the excess of PbO of sample/atmosphere PbO leads to a segregated PbO phase on the boundaries of the microstructure. A diffusion of Zr, Ti and La ions from PLZT to PbO phase promoted a stoichiometric deviation of the matrix and modified the optical and dielectric characteristics. (C) 2000 Elsevier B.V. Zirconia-ceria powders with ceria concentration varying from 0 to 12 mol% were synthesized using a polymeric precursor route based on the Pechini process. Powder characteristics were evaluated with regard to the crystallite size, BET surface area, phase distribution, nitrogen adsorption/desorption behavior, and agglomeration state. Sintering was studied considering the shrinkage rate, densification, grain size, and phase evolution. It was demonstrated that the synthesis method is effective to prepare nanosized powders of tetragonal zirconia single-phase. Sinterability mainly depended on the agglomeration state of powders and the monoclinic phase content, fully tetragonal zirconia ceramic, with grain size of 2.4 mu m, was obtained after addition of at least 9 mol% ceria and sintering at 1500 degrees C for 4 h. Composites containing a matrix of nanometric Ce-stabilized zirconia with an addition of micrometric monoclinic zirconia were processed by slip casting and sintered at a relatively low temperature. The ratio between nanometric and micrometric particles was determined according to the viscosity of the suspensions and the final density of the pellets. An optimum amount of micrometric particles was necessary to achieve improved suspension dispersion and higher pellet density. The amount of deflocculant in the suspensions containing the mixture of micrometric and nanometric particles was optimized by viscosity measurements. The pellets were characterized by dilatometry, Hg porosimetry, density measurement (the Archimedes method) and scanning electron microscopy. Despite the low green density obtained (35-38% of the theoretical density), densities as high as 97.5% were achieved after sintering. (C) 2001 Elsevier B.V. Ltd and Techna S.r.l. All rights reserved.

A nonisothermal study of the kinetics of the nanoporosity elimination in monolithic silica xerogels, prepared from acid and ultrasound catalyzed hydrolysis of tetraethylortosilicate (TEOS), has been carried out by means of in situ linear shrinkage measurements performed with different heating rates. The study could be applied up to almost alpha similar to 0.6 of the volume fraction alpha of eliminated pores. The activation energy was found increasing from about 3.2 x 10(2) kJ/mol for alpha similar to 0.06 up to about 4.4 x 10(2) kJ/mol for alpha. similar to 0.44. The sintering process accompanying the nanopore elimination in this set of xerogels is in agreement with a viscous flux sintering process with the hydroxyl content diminishing with the volume fraction of eliminated pores. All the volume fraction of eliminated pores versus temperature (T) curves can be matched onto a unique curve with an appropriate rescaling of the T axis, independent of the heating rate. This scaling property suggests that the path of sintering seems the same, regardless of the heating rate; the difference is that the rate is faster at higher temperature.

ZrO2 powder was coated with Al2O3 precursor generated by a polymeric precursor method in aqueous solution. The system of nanocoated particles formed a core shell-like structure in which the particle is the core and the nanocoating (additive) is the shell. A new approach is reported in order to control the superficial mass transport and the exaggerated grain growth during the sintering of zirconia powder. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) observations clearly showed the formation of an alumina layer on the surface of the zirconia particles. This layer modifies the sintering process and retards the maximum shrinkage temperature of the pure zirconia.

The caprine oxyhemoglobin dissociation curve has not been previously defined. Blood from 10 healthy goats was equilibrated in a tonometer with calibrated gas mixtures of oxygen at concentrations of 95%, 21%, 13%, 12%, 10%, 9%, 8%, 5%, 4% and 2.5%, 5% carbon dioxide, balance nitrogen. The pH, partial pressure of oxygen (PO2), partial pressure of carbon dioxide (PCO2), total hemoglobin, oxyhemoglobin saturation, carboxyhemoglobin, methemoglobin, and oxygen content were measured. The PO2/oxyhemoglobin and the PO2/oxygen content relationships were graphed with curve-fitting software and a formula for calculating oxyhemoglobin from PO2 was generated. The maximum oxygen content per gram of hemoglobin was 1.29 ml of oxygen per gram of hemoglobin. The PO2 at which hemoglobin was 50% saturated (P-50) from the PO2/oxyhemoglobin relationship was 28.6 +/- 1.5 mmHg and that from the PO2/oxygen content relationships was 29.1 +/- 1.6 mmHg. The Hill coefficient for the PO2/oxyhemoglobin data was 3.0 +/- 0.4. (c) 2005 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The effect of heating rate on the sintering of agglomerated NaNbO3 powders, processed by the polymeric precursors method, was studied. The results showed that the presence of agglomerated powder leads to a heterogeneous microstructure, with bimodal grain size distribution, after sintering. Using a high heating rate, the sintering of agglomerated particles was inhibits, leading to a homogeneous microstructure, with single grain size distribution. (C) 1998 Kluwer Academic Publishers.
The influence of sintering process and atmosphere on the non-ohmic properties of SnO2 based varistor
Resumo:
The non-ohmic properties of the 98.95% SnO2 + 1.0 CoO + 0.05 Nb2O5 (all in mole%) system, as well as the influence of sintering temperature and atmosphere on these properties, were characterized in this study. The maximum non-linear coefficient (alpha = 32) was obtained for a sintering temperature of 1300 degrees C in an oxygen atmosphere and this maximum is associated with the presence of O in SnO2 grain boundaries, as interface defects. Experimental results also indicate thermionic-type conduction mechanisms, which are associated with the potential barrier of Schottky or Poole-Frenkel types.

The alternating conductivity, sigma*(f) = sigma'(f) + i sigma ''(f), of in situ polymerized polyaniline thin films doped with hydrochloric acid, deposited on top of an interdigitated gold line array previously deposited on glass substrates, were measured in the frequency (f) range between 0.1 Hz to 10 MHz and in the temperature range from 100 to 430 K. The results for sigma'(f) are typical of a disordered solid material: for frequencies lower than a certain hopping frequency gamma(hop), log[sigma'(f)] is frequency-independent rising almost linearly for in logf > gamma(hop). A master curve was thus obtained by plotting the real component of the conductivity using normalized scales sigma'(f)/sigma(dc) and f/gamma(hop) which is indicative of a single process operating in the whole frequency range. An expression encompassing the conduction through a disordered structure taken from previous random free energy barrier model for hopping carriers, as well a dielectric function to represent the capacitive behavior of the PAni was employed to fit the experimental results. The dielectric constant and activation energy for hopping carriers were obtained as function of the polymer doping level. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The work reported here consisted of a study of the sensitivity of the nonlinear electrical properties of dense SnO2. CoO ceramic systems to low concentrations of La2O3, sintering temperature and cooling rates. The nonlinear electrical properties of these systems were found to increase with decreasing cooling rates, a behavior attributed to the CoO solid state reactions at temperatures below 1000 degreesC. Post-annealing treatment in N-2-rich atmospheres strongly decreases the non-ohmic behavior of SnO2. CoO ceramic systems. However, this behavior may be restored through thermal treatment in an O-2-rich atmosphere. (C) 2001 Elsevier B.V. Ltd. All rights reserved.
