West Quad and Union from the air

Located behind the Michigan Union bordering on Madison and Thompson Sts. The first unit was the Allen-Rumsey House (in commemoration of John Allen and Elisha Rumsey), constructed in 1937, and designed by Lane, Davenport & Meyer to coordinate with the addition to the Union, also being constructed in 1937. West Quadrangle was added in 1939, contained seven "houses," and is connected to the Union. Upon completion in 1939, the Allen-Rumsey unit became a part of West Quad.

Education for an ethical imagination

In response to the question, 'Education for what?', this article argues the case for an ethical imagination. It begins by illustrating different approaches to ethics - Greek antiquity, Kant s categorical imperative, Levinas's interhuman ethic of care, and Foucauldian genealogy. On the basis ofthis, it suggests that ethics may be understood as a disposition of continual questioning and adjusting of thought and action in relation to notions of human good and how to be and act in relation to others. It then briefly considers education as an ethical activity, and sets out three interrelated axes for an ethics of engagement in education: intellectual rigour, civility and care. Using examples ofcitizenship and statelessness in Australia, it argues that building an ethical imagination is a valuable goal for education.

Spontaneous and UV radiation-induced multiple metastatic melanomas in Cdk4(R24C/R24C)/TPras mice

Human melanoma susceptibility is often characterized by germ-line inactivating CDKN2A (INK4A/ARF) mutations, or mutations that activate CDK4 by preventing its binding to and inhibition by INK4A. We have previously shown that a single neonatal UV radiation (UVR) dose delivered to mice that carry melanocyte-specific activation of Hras (TPras) increases melanoma penetrance from 0% to 57%. Here, we report that activated Cdk4 cooperates with activated Hras to enhance susceptibility to melanoma in mice. Whereas UVR treatment failed to induce melanomas in Cdk4(R24C/R24C) mice, it greatly increased the penetrance and decreased the age of onset of melanoma development in Cdk4(R24C/R24C)/TPras animals compared with TPras alone. This increased penetrance was dependent on the threshold of Cdk4 activation as Cdk4(R24C/+)/TPras animals did not show an increase in UVR-induced melanoma penetrance compared with TPras alone. In addition, Cdk4(R24C/R24C)/TPras mice invariably developed multiple lesions, which occurred rarely in TPras mice. These results indicate that germ-line defects abrogating the pRb pathway may enhance UVR-induced melanoma. TPras and Cdk4(R24C/R24C)/TPras tumors were comparable histopathologically but the latter were larger and more aggressive and cultured cells derived from such melanomas were also larger and had higher levels of nuclear atypia. Moreover, the melanomas in Cdk4(R24C/R24C)/TPras mice, but not in TPras mice, readily metastasized to regional lymph nodes. Thus, it seems that in the mouse, Hras activation initiates UVR-induced melanoma development whereas the cell cycle defect introduced by mutant Cdk4 contributes to tumor progression, producing more aggressive, metastatic tumors.

Brisbane Airport: An alluvial landscape veiled by marine sediments

At Brisbane Airport, the construction of a diversion channel for Kedron Brook exposed a former beach, low cliff and sand spit, which, with their associated sediments and acid sulfate soils, demonstrate a postglacial high sea-level 1.3 - 1.4 m above present mean sea-level. The beach appears to date from 4000 to 5000 y BP. It varies in level where it lies above soft ground; these variations, and sag depressions that follow buried streamlines, indicate sediment consolidation since withdrawal of the sea from the former shore. Most of the area consists of former estuarine deposits, mangrove and saline marshes, and stranded tidal flats on which acid sulfate soils are widely developed. The modern landforms mostly reproduce subsurface features, to the extent that the surface relief replicates the landscape transgressed by the sea 7000 years ago. A small rise of sea-level possibly to +0.65 m occurred about 2000-3000 years ago. Foredunes near the present shore that are related to a slightly lower level 1000 - 500 years ago (-0.25 m) are currently subject to wave erosion.

An examination of the factors that influence identification and acculturation

This paper investigated the effects of print media exposure and intergroup contact on ethnic identification and acculturation attitudes of Chinese immigrants. Data was gathered from a survey participated by 265 respondents of Chinese origin. Findings indicated that exposure to the print media did not have a significant effect on ethnic identification and/or acculturation orientation. However, when the factor of intergroup contact was taken into consideration, differences began to occur. Specifically, for respondents from low intergroup contact group, ethnic identification increased with the desire to integrate into the large culture. For respondents from high intergroup contact group, opposite trends were found, i.e. as ethic identification increased, the tendency to adopt integration orientation decreased. Findings from this study suggested the need to combine factors of both interpersonal and mediated communication in the examination of ethnic identification and acculturation. This paper also drew some implications for the media industry and government policies.

JOSÉ E ASENET CONSTRUÇÃO DE IDENTIDADE JUDAICA NA DIÁSPORA EM ALEXANDRIA SÃO BERNARDO DO CAMPO 2012

O pseudepígrafo José e Asenet é uma obra datada entre os séculos I A.E.C. e I E.C., produto da comunidade judaica que viveu na diáspora em Alexandria. O livro é um romance que conta o encontro de José, patriarca judeu, com Asenet, a conversão de Asenet e o casamento de ambos. Fruto de uma comunidade que vivia os desafios e as hostilidades da diáspora, José e Asenet tem elementos que nos revelam uma identidade desta comunidade. O judaísmo do período helênico sofreu mudanças. A identidade judaica que, até então, se restringia a questões étnicasgeográficas, passava a abrir suas fronteiras para abarcar também os prosélitos e os que se casavam com judeus. Asenet é um modelo de prosélito que se converte ao judaísmo a partir de uma experiência individual com o Deus de José. A inserção dela na comunidade judaica se dá a partir da conversão e do casamento com José. Esta pesquisa teve como escopo encontrar elementos da construção de uma identidade judaica a partir da análise do pseudepígrafo José e Asenet. Esta identidade se configura, no romance: (1) a partir do confronto e da assimilação da cultura e religião grega e egípcia; (2) a partir da inserção de prosélitos na comunidade judaica; (3) numa ética da não-retaliação; (4) numa sexualidade evidente; (5) nas epifanías como elementos autenticadores do novo status.

Investigation of healthy and infected newborn saliva: the role of proteins and lipids as potential inflammatory diagnostic tools

We have carried out a discovery proteomics investigation aimed at identifying disease biomarkers present in saliva, and, more specifically, early biomarkers of inflammation. The proteomic characterization of saliva is possible due to the straightforward and non-invasive sample collection that allows repetitive analyses for pharmacokinetic studies. These advantages are particularly relevant in the case of newborn patients. The study was carried out with samples collected during the first 48 hours of life of the newborns according to an approved Ethic Committee procedure. In particular, the salivary samples were collected from healthy and infected (n=1) newborns. Proteins were extracted through cycles of sonication, precipitated in ice cold acetone, resuspended and resolved by 2D-electrophoresis. MALDI TOF/TOF mass spectrometry analysis was performed for each spot obtaining the proteins’ identifications. Then we compared healthy newborn salivary proteome and an infected newborn salivary proteome in order to investigate proteins differently expressed in inflammatory condition. In particular the protein alpha-1-antitrypsin (A1AT), correlated with inflammation, was detected differently expressed in the infected newborn saliva. Therefore, in the second part of the project we aimed to develop a robust LC-MS based method that identifies and quantifies this inflammatory protein within saliva that might represent the first relevant step to diagnose a condition of inflammation with a no-invasive assay. The same LC-MS method is also useful to investigate the presence of the F allelic variant of the A1AT in biological samples, which is correlated with the onset of pulmonary diseases. In the last part of the work we analysed newborn saliva samples in order to investigate how phospholipids and mediators of inflammation (eicosanoids) are subject to variations under inflammatory conditions and a trend was observed in lysophosphatidylcholines composition according to the inflammatory conditions.

Ensino Religioso e a Educação para a Solidariedade

A disciplina de Ensino Religioso, por passar desapercebida e ser entendida como de menor importância, acaba não recebendo o devido valor na grande maioria das escolas públicas e, também, na Academia. Tendo em vista essa problemática, a presente dissertação tem como objetivo mostrar a relevância da mesma para a sociedade, focando sua contribuição para superar a exclusão social e, conseqüentemente, a sua relação com a Educação para a Solidariedade. A partir dessa perspectiva, para a concretização desse objetivo, consideramos alguns conceitos fundamentais para esse fim, como educação, neoliberalismo, exclusão social, solidariedade, sentido da vida, conversão epistemológica, ética e religiosa. Também apresentamos três modelos de Ensino Religioso, a saber, o Fórum Nacional Permanente do Ensino Religioso, a Educação para a Religiosidade e o Confessional, apontando e refletindo sobre suas propostas pedagógicas, bem como pontos positivos e algumas limitações impostas por elas que precisamos levar em consideração ao utilizar qualquer um destes modelos. Como procedimentos metodológicos optamos pela pesquisa bibliográfica, sendo Jung Mo Sung e Hugo Assmann os autores que fundamentaram e justificaram, de forma mais precisa, a pertinência da Educação para a Solidariedade com o Ensino Religioso. Com esse trabalho, pretendemos propor que o Ensino Religioso é uma disciplina que deve ser compreendida e respeitada por todos aqueles que estão envolvidos com a educação, pois essa disciplina, ao auxiliar o processo educacional no combate à exclusão social, acaba por possuir uma participação precisa na nossa sociedade.(AU)
