Oceanographic changes in the western equatorial Pacific during the past 6 Ma are inferred from oxygen isotopic analyses of planktic and benthic foraminifera from Ontong Java Plateau (DSDP Site 586). The taxa are Globigerinoides sacculifer, Pulleniatina, Cibicidoides wuellerstorfi, and Oridorsalis umbonatus. Cooling and ice buildup are indicated by an 18O enrichment of 0.3 per mil in the planktic species near 3.4 Ma. This shift apparently is compensated in the benthic data by a warming of the deep waters by between 1° and 2° C. We suggest that the dominant source of upper deep water supply to the Pacific changed from Antarctic to North Atlantic at that time, the North Atlantic-derived water being warmer. Near 2.8 Ma (approximately) the planktic foraminifera again record an enrichment in 18O (Delta delta18O=0.25 per mil). We suggest ice buildup in the northern hemisphere as the cause, because of subsequent sharp increase in fluctuations of the delta18O signal, that is, instability. The enrichment is magnified in the benthic foraminifera (Delta delta18O = 0.5 per mil) by a cooling of the deep water by 1.5° at the time, presumably signalling a glacial-type reduction of North Atlantic Deep Water (NADW) production. Episodic divergence between the signals of G. sacculifer and Pulleniatina in the Pleistocene apparently reflects periods of increased upwelling in the western equatorial Pacific. The amplitude of ice volume fluctuations cannot be reconstructed from delta18O data alone, unless there are constraints on temperature variations. The increase in amplitude of fluctuation of the benthic and planktic signals during the Pleistocene may be attributed either to an increase in maximum ice volume, or to an increase in the fractionation of continental ice, or a combination of both causes.

Massive clinoptilolite authigenesis was observed at about 1105 meters below sea floor (mbsf) in lower Miocene wellcompacted carbonate periplatform sediments from the Great Bahama Bank [Ocean Drilling Program, ODP Leg 166, Site 1007]. The diagenetic assemblage comprises abundant zeolite crystallized within foraminifer tests and sedimentary matrix, as well as Mg smectites. In carbonate-rich deposits, the formation of the zeolite requires a supply of silica. Thus, the objective of the study is to determine the origin of the silica supply, its diagenetic evolution, and consequently the related implications on interpretation of the sedimentary record, in terms of local or global paleoceanographic change. For lack of evidence for any volcaniclastic input or traces of Si-enriched deep fluids circulation, an in situ biogenic source of silica is validated by isotopic data and chemical modeling for the formation of such secondary minerals in shallow-water carbonate sequences. Geochemical and strontium isotopic data clearly establish the marine signature of the diagenetic zeolite, as well as its contemporaneous formation with the carbonate deposition (Sr model ages of 19.6-23.2 Ma). The test of saturation for the pore fluids specifies the equilibrium state of the present mineralogical assemblage. Seawater-rock modeling specifies that clinoptilolite precipitates from the dissolution of biogenic silica, which reacts with clay minerals. The amount of silica (opal-A) involved in the reaction has to be significant enough, at least 10 wt.%, to account for the observed content of clinoptilolite occurring at the most zeolite-rich level. Modeling also shows that the observed amount of clinoptilolite (~19%) reflects an in situ and short-term reaction due to the high reactivity of primary biogenic silica (opal-A) until its complete depletion. The episodic occurrence of these well-lithified zeolite-rich levels is consistent with the occurrence of seismic reflectors, particularly the P2 seismic sequence boundary located at 1115 mbsf depth and dated as 23.2 Ma. The age range of most zeolitic sedimentary levels (biostratigraphic ages of 21.5-22 Ma) correlates well with that of the early Miocene glaciation Mi-1 and Mi-1a global events. Thus, the clinoptilolite occurrence in the shallow carbonate platform environment far from volcanogenic supply, or in other sensitive marine areas, is potentially a significant new proxy for paleoproductivity and oceanic global events, such as the Miocene events, which are usually recognized in deep-sea pelagic sediments and high latitude deposits.

Basal melt of ice shelves may lead to an accumulation of disc-shaped ice platelets underneath nearby sea ice, to form a sub-ice platelet layer. Here we present the seasonal cycle of sea ice attached to the Ekström Ice Shelf, Antarctica, and the underlying platelet layer in 2012. Ice platelets emerged from the cavity and interacted with the fast-ice cover of Atka Bay as early as June. Episodic accumulations throughout winter and spring led to an average platelet-layer thickness of 4 m by December 2012, with local maxima of up to 10 m. The additional buoyancy partly prevented surface flooding and snow-ice formation, despite a thick snow cover. Subsequent thinning of the platelet layer from December onwards was associated with an inflow of warm surface water. The combination of model studies with observed fast-ice thickness revealed an average ice-volume fraction in the platelet layer of 0.25 +/- 0.1. We found that nearly half of the combined solid sea-ice and ice-platelet volume in this area is generated by heat transfer to the ocean rather than to the atmosphere. The total ice-platelet volume underlying Atka Bay fast ice was equivalent to more than one-fifth of the annual basal melt volume under the Ekström Ice Shelf.

In this study we investigate benthic phosphorus cycling in recent continental margin sediments at three sites off the Namibian coastal upwelling area. Examination of the sediments reveals that organic and biogenic phosphorus are the major P-containing phases preserved. High Corg/Porg ratios just at the sediment surface suggest that the preferential regeneration of phosphorus relative to that of organic carbon has either already occurred on the suspension load or that the organic matter deposited at these sites is already rather refractory. Release of phosphate in the course of benthic microbial organic matter degradation cannot be identified as the dominating process within the observed internal benthic phosphorus cycle. Dissolved phosphate and iron in the pore water are closely coupled, showing high concentrations below the oxygenated surface layer of the sediments and low concentrations at the sediment-water interface. The abundant presence of Fe(III)-bound phosphorus in the sediments document the co-precipitation of both constituents as P-containing iron (oxyhydr)oxides. However, highly dissolved phosphate concentrations in pore waters cannot be explained, neither by simple mass balance calculations nor by the application of an established computer model. Under the assumption of steady state conditions, phosphate release rates are too high as to be balanced with a solid phase reservoir. This discrepancy points to an apparent lack of solid phase phosphorus at sediment depth were suboxic conditions prevail. We assume that the known, active, fast and episodic particle mixing by burrowing macrobenthic organisms could repeatedly provide the microbially catalyzed processes of iron reduction with authigenic iron (oxyhydro)oxides from the oxic surface sediments. Accordingly, a multiple internal cycling of phosphate and iron would result before both elements are buried below the iron reduction zone.

At DSDP Sites 534 (Central Atlantic) and 535 and 540 (Gulf of Mexico), and in the Vocontian Basin (France), Lower Cretaceous deposits show a very pronounced alternation of limestone and marl. This rhythm characterizes the pelagic background sedimentation and is independent of detritic intercalations related to contour and turbidity currents. Bed-scale cycles, estimated to be 6000-26,000 yr. long, comprise major and minor units. Their biological and mineralogic components, burrowing, heavy isotopes C and O, and some geochemical indicators, vary in close correlation with CaCO3 content. Vertical changes of frequency and asymmetry of the cycles are connected with fluctuations of the sedimentation rate. Plots of cycle thickness ("cyclograms") permit detailed correlations of the three areas and improve the stratigraphic subdivision of Neocomian deposits at the DSDP sites. Small-scale alternations, only observed in DSDP cores, comprise centimetric to millimetric banding and millimetric to micrometric lamination, here interpreted as varvelike alternations between laminae that are rich in calcareous plankton and others rich in clay. The laminations are estimated to correspond to cycles approximately 1,3, and 13 yr. in duration. The cyclic patterns appear to be governed by an interplay of continental and oceanic processes. Oceanic controls express themselves in variations of the biogenic carbonate flux, which depends on variations of such elements as temperature, oxygenation, salinity, and nutrient content. Continental controls modulate the influxes of terrigenous material, organic matter, and nutrients derived from cyclic erosion on land. Among the possible causes of cyclic sedimentation, episodic carbonate dissolution has been ruled out in favor of climatic fluctuations with a large range of periods. Such fluctuations are consistent with the great geographic extension shown by alternation controls and with the continuous spectrum of scales that characterizes limestone-marl cycles. The climatic variations induced by the Earth's orbital parameters (Milankovitch cycles) could be connected to bed-interbed alternations.

Late Pliocene to Recent sediments from the southern Brazil Basin (DSDP Hole 515A, hydraulic piston core) were analyzed for evidence of episodic flow of Antarctic Bottom Water (AABW) through the Vema Channel. Carbonate-enriched layers punctuate the post-Pliocene section, otherwise composed predominantly of terrigenous silt and clay. Carbonate enrichment is thought to result from rapid deposition of fine-grained calcareous turbidites, originating in canyons incised on the northern margin of the Rio Grande Rise. The composition of benthic foraminiferal assemblages and the presence of stratigraphically displaced discoasters is consistent with a turbidite origin. Based on the presence of displaced Antarctic diatoms, AABW flow through the Vema Channel apparently has had a major influence on this site for only four periods during the last 2.7 Ma (about 45 to 250; 375 to 430; 700 to 780; 1320 to 1345 thousand yr. ago).

Lower Eocene calcareous nannofossil limestone cored at DSDP Site 612 on the middle slope off New Jersey represents an almost complete biostratigraphic sequence; only the lowest biozone (CP9a; NP10*) was not recovered. The thickness of the strata (198 m), the good preservation of the nannofossils, and the lack of long hiatuses justify the acceptance of this section as a lower Eocene reference for the western North Atlantic margin. The widely recognized and very similar nannofossil zonations of Martini (NP zones) and Bukry-Okada (CP zones) are emended slightly to make their lower Eocene biozones coeval; in addition, five new subzones are erected that subdivide zones CP10 and CPU (NP12 and NP13). Established biozone names are retained as they are altered little in concept, but alphanumeric code systems are changed somewhat by appending an asterisk (*) to identify zones that are emended. Zone CP10* (NP12*) is divided into two parts, the Lophodolithus nascens Subzone (CP10*a; NP12*a) and the Helicosphaera seminulum Subzone (CP10*b; NP12*b). Zone CPU* (NP13*) is divided into three parts, the Helicosphaera lophota Subzone (CP11*a; NP13*a), the Cyclicargolithuspseudogammation Subzone (CP11*b; NP13*b), and the Rhabdosphaera tenuis Subzone (CP11*c; NP13*c). At Site 612, a time-depth curve based on nannofossil datums dated in previous studies reveals a smoothly declining sediment accumulation rate, from 4.9 cm/10**3yr in CP10* (NP12*) to 2.8 cm/103 yr. in CP12* (NP14*). The ages of first-occurrence datums not previously dated are approximated by projection onto this timedepth curve and are as follows: Helicosphaera seminulum, 55.0 Ma; Helicosphaera lophota, 54.5 Ma; Cyclicargolithus pseudogammation, 53.7 Ma; Rhabdosphaera tenuis, 52.6 Ma; and Rhabdosphaera inflata, 50.2 Ma. At nearby Site 613 on the upper rise, strata of similar age, 139 m thick, contain an unconformity representing Subzone CPll*b (NP13*b) and a hiatus of approximately 1.1 m.y. duration. The sediment accumulation rate in the lower part of this section (9.7 cm/10**3yr.) is twice that observed for equivalent strata at Site 612. The hiatus and the heightened sediment accumulation rate at Site 613 probably represent the effects of episodic mass wasting on the early Eocene continental slope and rise.

Organic geochemical and visual kerogen analyses were carried out on approximately 50 samples from Leg 81 (Rockall Plateau, North Atlantic). The sediments are from four sites (Sites 552-555), Pleistocene to Paleocene in age, and represent significantly different depositional environments and sources of organic matter. The Pleistocene glacial-interglacial cycles show differences in sedimentary organic matter based on Rock-Eval pyrolysis, organic phosphorus, and pyrolysis/mass-spectrometry analyses. Glacial samples contain more organic carbon, with a larger proportion of reworked organic matter. This probably reflects increased erosion of continental and shelf areas as a result of low sea level stands. Inter glacial samples contain a larger proportion of marine organic matter as determined by organic phosphorus and pyrolysis analyses. This immature, highly oxidized marine organic matter may be associated with the skeletal organic matrix of calcareous organisms. In addition, Rock-Eval data indicate no significant inorganic-carbonate contribution to the S3 pyrolysis peak. The Pliocene-Miocene sediments consist of pelagic, biogenic carbonates. The organic matter is similar to that of the Pleistocene interglacial periods; a mixture of oxidized marine organic matter and reworked, terrestrial detritus. The Paleocene-Oligocene organic matter reflects variations in source and depositional factors associated with the isolation of Rockall from Greenland. Paleocene sediments contain primarily terrestrial organic matter with evidence of in situ thermal stress resulting from interbedded lava flows. Late Paleocene and early Eocene organic matter suggests a highly oxidized marine environment, with major periods of deposition of terrestrially derived organic matter. These fluctuations in organic-matter type are probably the result of episodic shallowing and deepening of Rockall Basins. The final stage of Eocene/Oligocene sedimentation records the accelerating subsidence of Rockall and its isolation from terrestrial sources (Rockall and Greenland). This is shown by the increasingly marine character of the organic matter. The petroleum potential of sediments containing more than 0.5% organic carbon is poor because of their thermal immaturity and their highly oxidized and terrestrial organic-matter composition.

The origin of two acoustic sediment units has been studied based on lithological facies, chronology and benthic stable isotope values as well as on foraminifera and clay mineral assemblages in six marine sediment cores from Kveithola, a small trough west of Spitsbergenbanken on the western Barents Sea margin. We have identified four time slices with characteristic sedimentary environments. Before c. 14.2 cal. ka, rhythmically laminated muds indicate extensive sea ice cover in the area. From c. 13.9 to 14.2 cal. ka, muds rich in ice-rafted debris were deposited during the disintegration of grounded ice on Spitsbergenbanken. From c. 10.3 to 13.1 cal. ka, sediments with heterogeneous lithologies suggest a shifting influence of suspension settling and iceberg rafting, probably derived from a decaying Barents Sea Ice Sheet in the inner-fjord and land areas to the north of Kveithola. Holocene deposition was episodic and characterized by the deposition of calcareous sands and shell debris, indicative of strong bottom currents. We speculate that a marked erosional boundary at c. 8.2 cal. ka may have been caused by the Storegga tsunami. Whilst deposition was sparse during the Holocene, Kveithola acted as a sediment trap during the preceding deglaciation. Investigation of the deglacial sediments provides unprecedented details on the dynamics and timing of glacial retreat from Spitsbergenbanken.

Early Triassic oceans were characterized by deposition of a number of "anachronistic facies", including microbialites, seafloor carbonate cement fans, and giant ooids. Giant ooids were particularly prevalent in Lower Triassic sections across South China and exhibit unusual features that may provide insights into marine environmental conditions following the end-Permian mass extinction. The section at Moyang (Guizhou Province) contains abundant giant ooids ranging in size between 2 and 6 mm (maximum 12 mm) and exhibiting various cortical structures, including regular, deformed, compound, regenerated and "domed". Preservation of ooid cortical structure is generally good as indicated by petrographic observations, and trace element and carbon isotope analyses suggest that diagenesis occurred in a closed diagenetic system. All ooids exhibit fine concentric laminae, frequently alternating between light-colored coarsely crystalline and dark-colored finely crystalline layers probably reflecting variation in organic content or original mineralogy. Under scanning electron microscope, biomineralized filaments or biofilms and tiny carbonate fluorapatite (CFA) crystals are commonly found in the finely crystalline layers. We infer that the precipitation of CFA was related to adsorption of P via microbial activity on the surfaces of ooids following episodic incursions of deep waters rich in carbon dioxide, hydrogen sulfide and phosphate into shallow-marine environments. Giant ooid precipitation may have been promoted in shallow ramp settings during these events by increased watermass agitation and supersaturation with respect to calcium carbonate, as well as reduced carbonate removal rates through biotic skeletal formation. Spatio-temporal distribution data reveal that giant ooids were widespread in the Tethyan region during the Early Triassic, and that they were most abundant immediately after the end-Permian crisis and disappeared gradually as metazoans repopulated marine environments.
