The selective oxidation of ethylene to acetic acid was investigated on Pd-acid/support catalyst system. The catalytic activity is influenced strongly by the acidity of the catalyst. The stronger the catalyst acidity the higher the catalytic activity. The nature of the support also influences the activity of the catalyst substantially. The catalyst has highest activity when it exhibits highest acidity on silica.

Cobalt boride precursors were synthesized via chemical reaction of aqueous sodium borohydride with cobalt chloride, and followed by heat-treating at various temperatures. The as-prepared Co-B catalysts were characterized and analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), nitrogen adsorption-desorption and catalytic activity test; and were adopted to help accelerating hydrolysis reaction of NaBH4 alkaline solution. The Co-B catalyst treated at 500 degrees C exhibits the best catalytic activity, and achieves an average H, generation rate of 2970 ml/min/g, which may give a successive H, supply for a 481 W proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) at 100% H-2 utilization. A toxicity model on dividing the computational domain into two parts, a control region (CR) and a transport region (TR), for species calculation was recently developed. The model can be incorporated with either the heat source approach or the eddy dissipation model (EDM). The work described in this paper is a further application of the toxicity model with modifications of the EDM for vitiated fires. In the modified EDM, chemical reaction only occurs within the CR. This is consistent with the approach used in the species concentration calculations within the toxicity model in which yields of combustion products only change within the CR. A vitiated large room-corridor fire, in which the carbon monoxide (CM) concentrations are very high and the temperatures are relatively low at locations distant from the original fire source, is simulated using the modified EDM coupled with the toxicity model. Compared with the EDM, the modified EDM provide significant improvements in the predictions of temperatures at remote locations. Predictions of species concentrations at various locations follow the measured trends. Good agreements between the measured and predicted species concentrations are obtained at the vitiated fire stage.

This paper describes a model of a 1.8-litre four-cylinder four-stroke gasoline engine fitted with a close-coupled three-way catalyst (TWC). Designed to meet EURO 3 emissions standards, the engine includes some advanced emission control features in addition to the TWC, namely: variable valve timing (VVT), swirl control plates, and exhaust gas recirculation (EGR). Gas flow is treated as one-dimensional (1D) and unsteady in the engine ducting and in the catalyst. Reflection and transmission of pressure waves at the boundaries of the catalyst monolith are modelled. In-cylinder combustion is represented by a two-zone burn model with dissociation and reaction kinetics. A single Wiebe analysis of measured in-cylinder pressure data is used to determine the mass fraction burned as a function of crank angle (CA) at each engine speed. Measured data from steady-state dynamometer tests are presented for operation at wide open throttle (WOT) over a range of engine speeds. These results include CA-resolved traces of pressure at various locations throughout the engine together with cycle-averaged traces of gas composition entering the catalyst as indicated by a fast-response emissions analyser. Simulated engine performance and pressure wave action throughout the engine are well validated by the measured data.

Three plasma diagnostic methods, tunable infrared diode laser absorption spectroscopy, optical emission spectroscopy and microwave interferometry have been used to monitor concentrations of transient and stable molecules, CH3, CH4, C2H2, C2H6, and of electrons in capacitively coupled CH4-H-2-Ar radiofrequency (RF) plasmas (f(RF) = 13.56 MHz, p = 100 Pa, phi (total)= 66 sccm) for various discharge power values (P = 10-100 W) and gas mixtures. The degree of dissociation of the methane precursor varied between 3% and 60%. The methyl radical concentration was found to be in the order of 10(12) molecules cm(-3) and the electron concentration in the order of loll cm(-3). The methyl radical concentration and the concentrations of the stable C-2 hydrocarbons, C2H2 and C2H6, produced in the plasma, increased with discharge power. The fragmentation rates of the methane precursor and conversion rates to the measured C-2 hydrocarbons were estimated in dependence on discharge power. Radial distributions of the electron and methyl radical concentrations, and of the gas temperature were measured for the first time simultaneously in the plasma region between the discharge electrodes. The measurements allow us to draw qualitative conclusions on the main chemical processes and the plasma chemical reaction paths.

The reduction of guanine was studied by microelectrode voltammetry in the room temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) N-hexyltriethylammonium his (trifluoromethanesulfonyl) imide [N-6.2.2.2][N(Tf)(2)], 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorosphosphate [C(4)mim] [PF6], N-butyl-N-methyl-pyrrolidinium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide [C(4)mpyrr][N(Tf)(2)], 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide [C-4mim][N(TF)(2)], N-butyl-N-methyl-pyrrolidinium dicyanamide [C(4)mpyrr][N(NC)(2)] and tris(P-hexyl)-tetradecylphosphonium trifluorotris(pentafluoroethyl)phosphate [P-14,P-6,(6,6)][FAP] on a platinum microelectrode. In [N-6,N-2,N-2,N-2][NTf2] and [P-14,P-6,P-6.6][FAP], but not in the other ionic liquids studied, guanine reduction involves a one-electron, diffusion-controlled process at very negative potential to produce an unstable radical anion. which is thought to undergo a dimerization reaction, probably after proton abstraction from the cation of the ionic liquid. The rate of this subsequent reaction depends on the nature of the ionic liquid, and it is faster in the ionic liquid [P-14,P-6,P-6.6[FAP], in which the formation of the resulting dimer can be voltammetrically monitored at less negative potentials than required for the reduction of the parent molecule. Adenine showed similar behaviour to guanine but the pyrimidines thymine and cytosine did not; thymine was not reduced at potentials less negative than required for solvent (RTIL) decomposition while only a poorly defined wave was seen for cytosine. The possibility for proton abstraction from the cation in [N-6,N-2,N-2,N-2],[NTF2] and [P-14,P-6,P-6.6][FAP] is noted and this is thought to aid the electrochemical dimerization process. The resulting rapid reaction is thought to shift the reduction potentials for guanine and adenine to lower values than observed in RTILs where the scope for proton abstraction is not present. Such shifts are characteristic of so-called EC processes where reversible electron transfer is followed by a chemical reaction. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Nano- and meso-scale simulation of chemical ordering kinetics in nano-layered L1(0)-AB binary intermetallics was performed. In the nano- (atomistic) scale Monte Carlo (MC) technique with vacancy mechanism of atomic migration implemented with diverse models for the system energetics was used. The meso-scale microstructure evolution was, in turn, simulated by means of a MC procedure applied to a system built of meso-scale voxels ordered in particular L1(0) variants. The voxels were free to change the L1(0) variant and interacted with antiphase-boundary energies evaluated within the nano-scale simulations. The study addressed FePt thin layers considered as a material for ultra-high-density magnetic storage media and revealed metastability of the L1(0) c-variant superstructure with monoatomic planes parallel to the (001)-oriented layer surface and off-plane easy magnetization. The layers, originally perfectly ordered in the c-variant, showed discontinuous precipitation of a- and b-L1(0)-variant domains running in parallel with homogeneous disordering (i.e. generation of antisite defects). The domains nucleated heterogeneously on the free monoatomic Fe surface of the layer, grew inwards its volume and relaxed towards an equilibrium microstructure of the system. Two

Monte Carlo simulation of chemical ordering kinetics in nano-layered L10 AB binary intermetallics was performed. The study addressed FePt thin layers considered as a material for ultra-high-density magnetic storage media and revealed metastability of the L10 c-variant superstructure with monoatomic planes parallel to the surface and off-plane easy magnetization. The layers, originally perfectly ordered in a c-variant of the L10 superstructure, showed homogeneous disordering running in parallel with a spontaneous re-orientation of the monoatomic planes leading to a mosaic microstructure composed of a- and b-L10-variant domains. The domains nucleated heterogeneously on the surface of the layer and grew discontinuously inwards its volume. Finally, the domains relaxed towards an equilibrium microstructure of the system. Two “atomistic-scale” processes: (i) homogeneous disordering and (ii) nucleation of the a- and b-L10-variant domains showed characteristic time scales. The same was observed for the domain microstructure relaxation. The discontinuous domain growth showed no definite driving force and proceeded due to thermal fluctuations. The above complex structural evolution has recently been observed experimentally in epitaxially deposited thin films of FePt.

Indicator inks, previously shown to be capable of rapidly assessing photocatalytic activity via a novel photo-reductive mechanism, were simply applied via an aerosol spray onto commercially available pieces of Activ (TM) self-cleaning glass. Ink layers could be applied with high evenness of spread, with as little deviation as 5% upon UV-visible spectroscopic assessment of 25 equally distributed positions over a 10 cm x 10 cm glass cut. The inks were comprised of either a resazurin (Rz) or dichloroindophenol (DCIP) redox dye with a glycerol sacrificial electron donor in an aqueous hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC) polymer media. The photo-reduction reaction under UVA light of a single spot was monitored by UV-vis spectroscopy and digital images attained from a flat-bed scanner in tandem for both inks. The photo-reduction of Rz ink underwent a two-step kinetic process, whereby the blue redox dye was initially reduced to a pink intermediate resorufin (Rf) and subsequently reduced to a bleached form of the dye. In contrast, a simple one-step kinetic process was observed for the reduction of the light blue redox dye DCIP to its bleached intermediates. Changes in red-green-blue colour extracted from digital images of the inks were inversely proportional to the changes seen at corresponding wavelengths via UV-visible absorption spectroscopy and wholly indicative of the reaction kinetics. The photocatalytic activity areas of cuts of Activ (TM) glass, 10 cm x 10 cm in size, were assessed using both Rz and DCIP indicator inks evenly sprayed over the films: firstly using UVA lamp light to activate the underlying Activ (TM) film (1.75 mW cm(-2)) and secondly under solar conditions (2.06 +/- 0.14 mW cm(-2)). The photo-reduction reactions were monitored solely by flat-bed digital scanning. Red-green-blue values of a generated 14 x 14 grid (196 positions) that covered the entire area of each film image were extracted using a Custom-built program entitled RGB Extractor(C). A homogenous degradation over the 196 positions analysed for both Rz (Red colour deviation = 19% UVA, 8% Solar: Green colour deviation = 17% UVA, 12% Solar) and DCIP (Red colour deviation = 22% UVA, 16% Solar) inks was seen in both UVA and solar experiments, demonstrating the consistency of the self-cleaning titania layer on Activ (TM). The method presented provides a good solution for the high-throughput photocatalytic screening of a number of homogenous photocatalytically active materials simultaneously or numerous positions on a single film; both useful in assessing the homogeneity of a film or determining the best combination of reaction components to produce the optimum performance photocatalytic film. For Variable Stiffness (VS) composites with steered curvilinear tow paths, the fiber orientation angle varies continuously throughout the laminate, and is not required to be straight, parallel and uniform within each ply as in conventional composite laminates. Hence, the thermal properties (conduction), as well as the structural stiffness and strength, vary as functions of location in the laminate, and the associated composite structure is often called a “variable stiffness” composite structure. The steered fibers lead not only to the alteration of mechanical load paths, but also to the alteration of thermal paths that may
result in favorable temperature distributions within the laminate and improve the laminate performance. Evaluation of VS laminate performance under thermal loading is the focus of this chapter. Thermal performance evaluations require experimental and numerical analysis of VS laminates under different processing and loading conditions. One of the advantages of using composite materials in many applications is the tailoring capability of the laminate,
not only during the design phase but also for manufacturing. Heat transfer through variable conduction and chemical reaction (degree of cure) occurring during manufacturing (curing) plays an important role in the final thermal and mechanical performance, and shape of composite structures.
