Within the framework of Switzerland’s international NCCR North-South research programme, Partnership Actions for Mitigating Syndromes (PAMS) are a practice-oriented component with a transdisciplinary approach. By linking research and development practice, they bring together researchers, practitioners and local communities in a common effort to test and evaluate research findings in concrete development contexts. They provide unique insights into innovative approaches and opportunities for promoting sustainable development in countries of the South and East. After an initial four-year phase, the PAMS projects implemented to date were evaluated in order to learn about their potentials and limits, as well as to decide on the direction of the component for the next phase of the programme. The present publication presents the results of this evaluation.

Choking under pressure describes the phenomenon of people performing well below their expected standard under circumstances where optimal performance is crucial. One of the prevailing explanations for choking is that pressure increases the conscious attention to the underlying processes of the performer's task execution, thereby disrupting what would normally be a relatively automatic process. However, research on choking has focused mainly on the influence of pressure on motor performance, typically overlooking how it might alter the way that vision is controlled when performing these motor actions. In this article we ask whether the visual component of expert motor-skill execution is susceptible to choking much like the motor component is thought to be. To do so, we draw heavily on empirical findings from studies of sporting expertise, in particular focussing on the role of gaze in three types of visually-guided actions: interceptive actions, aiming tasks, and anticipatory skill. For each of these skills we evaluate the nature of the expert advantage, discuss the role of consciousness in their control, examine the potential impact of pressure on task performance, and consider interventions designed to reduce the likelihood of choking when performing these tasks

In a multi-level stakeholder approach the international level is of primordial importance not only in terms of legal frameworks, but also in terms of scientific analysis of the needs, options and constraints, as well as related to monitoring and evaluation systems. The Working Group on 'International Actions for the Sustainable Use of Soils' (IASUS) of the International Union of Soil Science (IUSS) identified a number of issues and measures in preparation of the 17thWorld Congress of Soil Science held in Bangkok, Thailand, in August 2002, and prepared a resolution in support of a 'global agenda for the sustainable use of soils', which was adopted on 21st August 2002 on the closing day of the congress.

Nogo-A is a myelin associated protein and one of the most potent neurite growth inhibitors in the central nervous system. Interference with Nogo-A signaling has thus been investigated as therapeutic target to promote functional recovery in CNS injuries. Still, the finding that Nogo-A presents a fairly ubiquitous expression in many types of neurons in different brain regions, in the eye and even in the inner ear suggests for further functions besides the neurite growth repression. Indeed, a growing number of studies identified a variety of functions including regulation of neuronal stem cells, modulation of microglial activity, inhibition of angiogenesis and interference with memory formation. Aim of the present commentary is to draw attention on these less well-known and sometimes controversial roles of Nogo-A. Furthermore, we are addressing the role of Nogo-A in neuropathological conditions such as ischemic stroke, schizophrenia and neurodegenerative diseases.

Approximately 6,600 people die from acute myelogenous leukemia (AML) on an annual basis. During the past 10 to 15 years, there has been gradual overall improvements in the therapy of this disease, yet the majority of patients with AML succumb to this disease. In an attempt to improve current therapeutic strategies for AML, we became interested in a commercially available drug, dexrazoxane, which protects against anthracycline-induced cardiotoxicity. We have investigated dexrazoxane's (DEX) effects on different tissue types in an effort to determine its unique mechanism of action. Colony forming assays were used to evaluate stem-cell renewal of myeloid cells in vitro and median effect analysis was used to evaluate antagonism, synergism, or additivity. The anthracyclines, doxorubicin, daunorubicin, and idarubicin were individually combined with DEX in leukemic myeloid models to determine if the combination of the two drugs resulted in a synergistic, additive or antagonistic effect. Etoposide and cytosine arabinoside were also evaluated in combination with DEX using the same in vitro model and evaluated similarly. ^ Dexrazoxane in combination with any of the anthracyclines was schedule dependent. The combination of DEX and anthracycline resulted in a greater antitumor effect than anthracycline alone except for DEX administered 24 hours before doxorubicin or daunorubicin. These data were corroborated through median effect analysis. Etoposide in combination with dexrazoxane was synergistic for all combinations, and the combination of cytosine arabinoside and DEX was schedule dependent. In contrast, using an in vivo gastrointestinal model, DEX in combination with doxorubicin was antagonistic for almost all of the ratios used, except for the highest. A Withers' assay was used to evaluate toxicity on jejunal crypt cells. No effect was apparent for the combination of idarubicin and DEX, however, as seen with RZ, DEX in addition to radiation greatly potentiated the cytotoxic effects of radiation on crypts. These paradoxical effects of dexrazoxane were initially enigmatic, but after additional investigation, we propose a model that explains our findings. We conclude that DEX in combination with anthracyclines produces an additive to synergistic antileukemic response and may have therapeutic potential clinically. Additionally, DEX protects the gastrointestinal tract from doxorubicin toxicity, which could have clinical implications for the administration of greater doses of doxorubicin. ^

This paper examines the magnitude and timing of the effects of changes in the monetary base on the aggregate and regional changes in bank loans within the United States. We consider both Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) regions, and individual states and the District of Columbia for our regional analysis. The empirical analysis provides some insight on the bank-lending channel of monetary policy. We find strong evidence of a 4-quarter lag in the effect of changes in the monetary base on bank loans. That finding proves robust across all regions and nearly all states.
