The properties of the nickel(II)/2-hydroxy-5-nonylacetophenone oxime (HNAPO), an active ingredient in LIX 84, extraction system were characterised in a micellar system. The extinction coefficient, λmax of HNAPO (316 nm) and the Ni2+ complex (387 nm) in a neutral micellar system, poly dispersed octa-ethyleneglycol mono-n-dodecyl ether (G12A8) were determined as 3100 and 3500 M−1 cm−1, respectively. HNAPO was found to have a neutral micellar phase and bulk aqueous phase pKa of 11.5 and 12.5, respectively. The extraction equilibrium constant, Kex, was determined to be 10−8.0, and the deviation from theory observed at high pH can be accounted for by consideration of the competition for nickel(II) ions by hydroxide ions and HNAPO. A micellar phase of octa-ethyleneglycol mono-n-dodecyl ether (C12E8) was determined to be an appropriate model of the free oil/water interface from the solubilised location of HNAPO. Utilising the interfacial probe, 4-heptadecyl-7-hydroxy coumarin (HHC) allowed the determination of the electrostatic surface potential of mixed micelles of G12A8 and sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) or dodecyl trimethyl ammonium chloride (DTAC). The electrostatic surface potential was a linear function of the number of additional surfactant monomers within the G12A8 micelle, for the concentration range studied. For G12A8/DTAC mixed micelles, the surface potential was given by +1.1 mV per DTAC molecule per micelle, and for G12A8/SDS mixed micelles the relationship was −1.4 mV per SDS molecule per micelle.

The self-assembling behavior of a single-chain quaternary ammonium amphiphile bearing azobenzene (C12AzoC6N+) on freshly cleaved mica sheet has been investigated by atomic force microscopy (AFM) method. Confocal microscopic Raman spectra confirm the adsorption of the self-assembled monolayer structure. Ex-situ AFM reveals that C12AzoC6N+ forms branch-like stripes indicating the fusion and reorganization of the micelles during drying in air as the in-situ AFM has revealed that surfactant forms spherical micelles on the mica surface. The nano-sized surface structure is strongly dependent on the change of molecular structure, which resulted from photo-induced isomerization. The nano-sized stripe is quite stable even being annealed at 90 °C for 4 h.

Blends of poly(2-vinyl pyridine)-block-poly(methyl methacrylate) (P2VP-b-PMMA) and poly(hydroxyether of bisphenol A) (phenoxy) were prepared by solvent casting from chloroform solution. The specific interactions, phase behavior and nanostructure morphologies of these blends were investigated by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), dynamic light scattering (DLS), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). In this block copolymer/homopolymer blend system, it is established that competitive hydrogen bonding exists as both blocks of the P2VP-b-PMMA are capable of forming intermolecular hydrogen bonds with phenoxy. It was observed that the interaction between phenoxy and P2VP is stronger than that between phenoxy and PMMA. This imbalance in the intermolecular interactions and the repulsions between the two blocks of the diblock copolymer lead to a variety of phase morphologies. At low phenoxy concentration, spherical micelles are observed. As the concentration increases, PMMA begins to interact with phenoxy, leading to the changes of morphology from spherical to wormlike micelles and finally forms a homogenous system. A model is proposed to describe the self-assembled nanostructures of the P2VP-b-PMMA/phenoxy blends, and the competitive hydrogen bonding is responsible for the morphological changes.

Practical lithium-metal batteries are the ultimate goal of battery researchers. The addition of a zwitterionic compound (see Figure) to an ionic liquid electrolyte doped with a lithium salt results in a 100% enhancement of the current densities achieved in the cycling of a lithium-metal cell. This phenomenon arises due to increased lithium-ion mobility or a reduced solid electrolyte interphase layer resistance.

The polymerization of lithium 2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propane sulphonic acid with N,N′-dimethylacrylamide has yielded polyelectrolyte gels which have the favourable property of being single ion conductors. The use of single ion conductors ensures that the transport number of lithium is close to unity. The mobility of the lithium ion is still quite low in these systems, resulting in low ionic conductivity. To increase ionic conductivity more charge carriers can be added however competing effects arise between increasing the number of charge carriers and decreasing the mobility of these charge carriers. In this paper the monomer ratio of the copolymer polyelectrolyte is varied to investigate the effect increasing the number of charge carriers has on the ionic conductivity and lithium ion and solvent diffusivity using pfg-NMR. Ion dissociators such as TiO2 nano-particles and a zwitterionic compound based on 1-butylimidazolium-3-(N-butanesulfonate) have been added in an attempt to further increase the ionic conductivity of the system. It was found that the system with the highest ionic conductivity had the lowest solvent mobility in the presence of zwitterion. Without zwitterion the mobility of the solvent appears to determine the maximum ionic conductivity achievable.

To realise the battery potential of gel polyelectrolytes greater ion dissociation, ultimately leading to higher conductivities, must be achieved. Higher conductivities will result through increasing the ion-dissociating properties of the gel polyelectrolyte. The poor degree of ion dissociation arises as the active ion tends to remain in close proximity to the backbone charge. Nano-particle inorganic oxides, and zwitterionic compounds have been shown to act as dissociation enhancers in certain polyelectrolyte systems. In an attempt to further increase ion dissociation the addition of both TiO2 nano-particles and a zwitterionic compound based on 1-butylimidazolium-3-N-(butanesulphonate) were added to the gel polyelectrolyte system poly (Li-2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propane sulphonate-co-N,N′-dimethylacrylamide), poly(Li-AMPS-co-DMAA) to determine if a synergistic effect occurs. Two different solvents were used to determine the breadth of applicability of the additive effect. The use of both dissociators resulted in the maximum ionic conductivity being achieved at lower nano-particle concentrations when compared to an identical system without zwitterion.

Zwitterionic compounds such as those based on 1-butylimidazolium-3-(n-butanesulfonate) have previously been shown to have positive effects on the transport properties of polyelectrolytes. The addition of the zwitterion has been found to, in some cases, increase the dissociation of the lithium ion and enhance the conductivity by almost an order of magnitude. In this work, we report the effects of adding the above-mentioned zwitterion into the polyelectrolyte gel system poly(lithium methacrylate-co-N,N-dimethyl acrylamide); the anionic group being a stronger base leads to different behaviour for this copolymer compared to previous work. Polyelectrolyte gels based on dimethyl sulfoxide and polyether solvents were investigated to determine the breadth of applicability of the zwitterion in improving lithium ion transport. Impedance spectroscopy and pulse field gradient-NMR diffusion indicate an increase in the number of available charge carriers with zwitterion addition in some gel systems, however, the effect is not universal.

The solubilization of three major components, viz., palmitic, oleic, and linoleic acids, in palm oil by ethoxylated surfactants was investigated. The results were analyzed in terms of the molecular properties of surfactants and free fatty acids (FFAs). It was found that the solubilities of these FFAs in various micellar solutions depend not only on their octanol−water partition coefficients (Kow), but also on their physicochemical properties. The study on the solubilization kinetics was conducted by choosing palmitic acid as a model solubilizate and Tergitol 15-S-7 as the model surfactant. A first-order film diffusion model, which accounts for the direct uptake of organic molecules at a solid surface into surfactant micelles, was adopted to analyze the effect of surfactant on dissolution of palmitic acid. It was observed that the presence of surfactant reduced the mass-transfer coefficient. Instead, the overall mass-transfer rate was enhanced because of the much higher driving force from the increased solubilization capacity.

Colistin is an amphiphilic antibiotic that has re-emerged into clinical use due to the increasing prevalence of difficult-to-treat Gram-negative infections. The existence of self-assembling colloids in solutions of colistin and its derivative prodrug, colistin methanesulfonate (CMS), was investigated. Colistin and CMS reduced the air−water interfacial tension, and dynamic light scattering (DLS) studies showed the existence of 2.07 ± 0.3 nm aggregates above 1.5 mM for colistin and of 1.98 ± 0.36 nm aggregates for CMS above 3.5 mM (mean ± SD). Above the respective critical micelle concentrations (CMC) the solubility of azithromycin, a hydrophobic antibiotic, increased approximately linearly with increasing surfactant concentration (5:1 mol ratio colistin:azithromycin), suggestive of hydrophobic domains within the micellar cores. Rapid conversion of CMS to colistin occurred below the CMC (60% over 48 h), while conversion above the CMC was less than 1%. The formation of colistin and CMS micelles demonstrated in this study is the proposed mechanism for solubilization of azithromycin and the concentration-dependent stability of CMS.

A direct force-measuring technique has been used to study the interaction forces between adsorbed CTAB (cetyltrimethylammonium bromide) bilayers at concentrations well above the CMC (critical micelle concentration). An analysis of these results based on the Poisson-Boltzmann equations leads to the conclusion that CTAB micelles and adsorbed bilayers are about 22(±4)% dissociated. The apparent agreement of bilayer and micellar ion binding parameters raises an important challenge for theories of double-layer interactions. In addition, the double-layer decay lengths observed in these micellar solutions appear to be due entirely to the dissociated bromide and free CTA+ ions, with no apparent contribution from charged micelles.

A simple and effective method is introduced to synthesize a series of polystyrene-b-poly(oligo(ethylene oxide) monomethyl ether methacrylate)-b- polystyrene (PSt-b-POEOMA-b-PSt) triblock copolymers. The structures of PSt-b-POEOMA-b-PSt copolymers were characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR) spectroscopy. The molecular weight and molecular weight distribution of the copolymer were measured by gel permeation chromatography (GPC). Furthermore£ the self-assembling and drug-loaded behaviours of three different ratios of PSt-b-POEOMA-b-PSt were studied. These copolymers could readily self-assemble into micelles in aqueous solution. The vitamin E-loaded copolymer micelles were produced by the dialysis method. The micelle size and core-shell structure of the block copolymer micelles and the drug-loaded micelles were confirmed by dynamic light scattering (DLS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The thermal properties of the copolymer micelles before and after drug-loaded were investigated by different scanning calorimetry (DSC). The results show that the micelle size is slightly increased with increasing the content of hydrophobic segments and the micelles are still core-shell spherical structures after drug-loaded. Moreover, the glass transition temperature (Tg) of polystyrene is reduced after the drug loaded. The drug loading content (DLC) of the copolymer micelles is 70%-80% by ultraviolet (UV) photolithography analysis. These properties indicate the micelles self-assembled from PSt-b- POEOMA-b- PSt copolymers would have potential as carriers for the encapsulation of hydrophobic drugs.

A simple and general patterning technique for inorganic nanoparticles (NPs, e.g., gold NPs) is demonstrated, consisting of the selective lift-off of metal precursor loaded block copolymer micelles. The procedure works as follows: first, a topographically micropatterned polystyrene (PS) stamp is placed in contact with a substrate covered with hexagonally arranged micelles. Then the assembly is heated above the glass transition temperature (Tg) of PS, and finally, the PS stamp is peeled off, removing from the substrate the micelles that were in contact with the protrusions of the stamp. As a result, patterns of micelles either exactly identical to the original or with much smaller features down to submicrometer were obtained. In a subsequent step, the organic material can be removed and the metal precursor reduced by plasma treatment, resulting in patterns of NPs. This technique, denoted as “μ-contact deprinting”, provides a fast and inexpensive way to obtain hierarchical patterns of NPs on a wide range of substrates. It is demonstrated that it can even be applied on curved surfaces because of the softness of the PS stamp above its T

A range of norbornane based amphiphiles, which possess a rigid 'kink' in the centre of amphiphiles, were accessed via a concise four step synthesis. The self-assembly properties of these novel compounds were then investigated and the critical aggregation concentration (CAC), hydrodynamic diameter (DH) by dynamic light scattering (DLS) and their morphology by cryogenic transmission electron microscopy (cryoTEM) and negatively stained transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were determined. These compounds while possessing similar CAC values (50-70 μM) exhibited a wide variety of particle size (60-140 nm) and morphologies, including vesicles, cigar-shaped aggregates and rod-like micelles. Considering the similarities in molecular structure we have proposed that the unique nature of the molecular 'kink' is affecting molecular assembly in which subtle changes in molecular structure have large ramifications on aggregate size and morphology.

Hollow mesoporous silica nanoparticles (HMSNs) are one of the most promising carriers for effective drug delivery due to their large surface area, high volume for drug loading and excellent biocompatibility. However, the non-ionic surfactant templated HMSNs often have a broad size distribution and a defective mesoporous structure because of the difficulties involved in controlling the formation and organization of micelles for the growth of silica framework. In this paper, a novel "Eudragit assisted" strategy has been developed to fabricate HMSNs by utilising the Eudragit nanoparticles as cores and to assist in the self-assembly of micelle organisation. Highly dispersed mesoporous silica spheres with intact hollow interiors and through pores on the shell were fabricated. The HMSNs have a high surface area (670m(2)/g), small diameter (120nm) and uniform pore size (2.5nm) that facilitated the effective encapsulation of 5-fluorouracil within HMSNs, achieving a high loading capacity of 194.5mg(5-FU)/g(HMSNs). The HMSNs were non-cytotoxic to colorectal cancer cells SW480 and can be bioconjugated with Epidermal Growth Factor (EGF) for efficient and specific cell internalization. The high specificity and excellent targeting performance of EGF grafted HMSNs have demonstrated that they can become potential intracellular drug delivery vehicles for colorectal cancers via EGF-EGFR interaction.

A viable method of encapsulating block copolymer micelles inside vesicles using a conjugated polymer is reported in this study. Self-assembly and complexation between an amphiphilic block copolymer poly(methyl methacrylate)-b-poly(acrylic acid) (PMMA-b-PAA) and a rod-like conjugated polymer polyaniline (PANI) in aqueous solution were studied using transmission electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy and dynamic light scattering. The complexation and morphology transformation were driven by electrostatic interaction between PANI and the PAA block of the block copolymer. Addition of PANI to PMMA-b-PAA induced the morphology transformation from micelles to irregular vesicles through vesicles, thick-walled vesicles (TWVs) and multimicellar vesicles (MMVs). Among the observed morphologies, MMVs were observed for the first time. Morphology transformation was studied as a function of aniline/acrylic acid molar ratio ([ANI]/[AA]). Micelles were observed for the pure block copolymer, while vesicles and TWVs were observed at [ANI]/[AA] = 0.1 and 0.3, respectively. MMVs were observed at [ANI]/[AA] = 0.5 and irregular vesicles were observed for molar ratios at 0.7 and above. Clearly, a conjugated polymer like polyaniline can induce a morphology transformation even at its lower concentrations and produce complex morphologies.
