Four new oxo-centered Mn-III-salicylaldoximate triangle-based extended complexes (Mn6O2)-O-III(salox)(6)(EtOH)(4)(phda)](n)(saloxH(2))(n)(2H(2)O)(n) (1), (Mn6O2)-O-III(salox)(6)(MeOH)(5)(5-I-isoph)](n)(3MeOH)(n) (2), (Mn6O2)-O-III(salox)(6)(MeOH)(4)(H2O) (5-N-3-isoph)](n)(4MeOH)(n) (3) and (Mn3NaO)-Na-III(salox)(3)(MeOH)(4)(5-NO2-isoph)](n)(MeOH)(n) (H2O)(n) (4) salox=salicylaldoximate, phda=1,3-phenylenediacetate, isoph=isophthalate] have been synthesized under similar reaction conditions. Single crystal X-ray structures show that in 1, only one type of Mn-6 cluster is arranged in 1D, whereas in 2 and 3 there are two types of clusters, differing in the way the triangle units are joined and assembled. In complex4, however, the basic building structure is heteronuclear and based on Mn-3 units extended in 2D. Susceptibility measurements (dc and ac) over a wide range of temperatures and fields show that the complexes1, 2, and 3 behave as single molecule magnets (SMMs) with S=4ground state, while 4 is dominantly antiferromagnetic with a ground spin state S=2. Density functional theory calculations have been performed on model complexes to provide a qualitative theoretical interpretation for their overall magnetic behavior.

The last enzyme in the arginine-biosynthesis pathway, argininosuccinate lyase, from Mycobacterium tuberculosis has been cloned, expressed, purified and crystallized, and preliminary X-ray studies have been carried out on the crystals. The His-tagged tetrameric enzyme with a subunit molecular weight of 50.9 kDa crystallized with two tetramers in the asymmetric unit of the orthorhombic unit cell, space group P2(1)2(1)2(1). Molecular-replacement calculations and self-rotation calculations confirmed the space group and the tetrameric nature of the molecule.

In this article we present the syntheses, characterizations, magnetic and luminescence properties of five 3d-metal complexes, Co(tib)(1,2-phda)](n)center dot(H2O)(n) (1), Co-3(tib)(2)(1,3-phda)(3)(H2O)](n)center dot(H2O)(2n) (2), Co-5(tib)(3)(1,4-phda)(5)(H2O)(3)](n)center dot(H2O)(7n) (3), Zn-3(tib)(2)(1,3-phda)(3)](n)center dot(H2O)(4n) (4), and Mn(tib)(2)(H2O)(2)](n)center dot(1,4-phdaH)(2n)center dot(H2O)(4n) (5), obtained from the use of isomeric phenylenediacetates (phda) and the neutral 1,3,5-tris(1-imidazolyl)benzene (tib) ligand. Single crystal X-ray structures showed that 1 constitutes 3,5-connected 2-nodal nets with a double-layered two-dimensional (2D) structure, while 2 forms an interpenetrated 2D network (3,4-connected 3-nodal net). Complex 3 has a complicated three-dimensional structure with 10-nodal 3,4,5-connected nets. Complex 4, although it resembles 2 in stoichiometry and basic building structures, forms a very different overall 2D assembly. In complex 5 the dicarboxylic acid, upon losing only one of the acidic protons, does not take part in coordination; instead it forms a complicated hydrogen bonding network with water molecules. Magnetic susceptibility measurements over a wide range of temperatures revealed that the metal ions exchange very poorly through the tib ligand, but for the Co(II) complexes the effects of nonquenched orbital contributions are prominent. The 3d(10) metal complex 4 showed strong luminescence with lambda(max) = 415 nm (lambda(ex) = 360 nm).

Cementite dissolution in cold-drawn pearlitic steel (0.8 wt.% carbon) wires has been studied by quantitative X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Mossbauer spectroscopy up to drawing strain 1.4. Quantification of cementite-phase fraction by Rietveld analysis has confirmed more than 50% dissolution of cementite phase at drawing strain 1.4. It is found that the lattice parameter of the ferrite phase determined by Rietveld refinement procedure remains nearly unchanged even after cementite dissolution. This confirms that the carbon atoms released after cementite dissolution do not dissolve in the ferrite lattice as Fe-C interstitial solid solution. Detailed analysis of broadening of XRD line profiles for the ferrite phase shows high density of dislocations (approximate to 10(15)/m(2)) in the ferrite matrix at drawing strain 1.4. The results suggest a dominant role of 111 screw dislocations in the cementite dissolution process. Post-deformation heat treatment leads to partial annihilation of dislocations and restoration of cementite phase. Based on these experimental observations, further supplemented by TEM studies, we have suggested an alternative thermodynamic mechanism of the dissolution process.

We here report what we believe to be an important method for studying hydrogen bonding in systems containing a paramagnetic centre. The technique of electron-nuclear double resonance ( ENDOR) has been applied to study the hydrogen-bond network around the AsO44-. centre in X-ray irradiated KH2AsO4. ENDOR transitions from several sets of hydrogen nuclei surrounding the centre were observed at 4.2 degrees K and the spectra for two sets of neighbouring nuclei are identified. The angular dependences for these spectra are fitted with a spin-Hamiltonian to obtain the isotropic and anisotropic magnetic hyperfine constants. The results are discussed in terms of the available spectroscopic and crystallographic data on KH2AsO4 and the order-disorder model of ferroelectrictricity in this class of crystals.

We present a detailed timing and spectral analysis of the Be X-ray binary SW J2000.6+3210 discovered by the Burst Alert Telescope Galactic plane survey. Two Suzaku observations of the source made at six months interval, reveal pulsations at similar to 890 s for both observations with a much weaker pulse fraction in the second one. Pulsations are clearly seen in the energy band of 0.3-10 keV of X-ray Imaging Spectrometer for both observations and at high energies up to 40 keV for the second observation. The broad-band X-ray spectrum is consistent with a power-law and high-energy cut-off model along with a hot blackbody component. No change in spectral parameters is detected between the observations. We have also analysed several short observations of the source with Swift/XRT and detected only a few per cent variation in flux around a mean value of 3.5 x 10(-11) erg cm(-2) s(-1). The results indicate that SW J2000.6+3210 is a member of persistent Be X-ray binaries which have the same broad characteristics as this source.

Three copper-azido complexes Cu-4(N-3)(8)(L-1)(2)(MeOH)(2)](n) (1), Cu-4(N-3)(8)(L-1)(2)] (2), and Cu-5(N-3)(10)(L-1)(2)](n) (3) L-1 is the imine resulting from the condensation of pyridine-2-carboxaldehyde with 2-(2-pyridyl)ethylamine] have been synthesized using lower molar equivalents of the Schiff base ligand with Cu(NO3)(2)center dot 3H(2)O and an excess of NaN3. Single crystal X-ray structures show that the basic unit of the complexes 1 and 2 contains Cu-4(II) building blocks; however, they have distinct basic and overall structures due to a small change in the bridging mode of the peripheral pair of copper atoms in the linear tetranudear structures. Interestingly, these changes are the result of changing the solvent system (MeOH/H2O to EtOH/H2O) used for the synthesis, without changing the proportions of the components (metal to ligand ratio 2:1). Using even lower proportions of the ligand, another unique complex was isolated with Cu-5(II) building units, forming a two-dimensional complex (3). Magnetic susceptibility measurements over a wide range of temperature exhibit the presence of both antiferromagnetic (very weak) and ferromagnetic exchanges within the tetranuclear unit structures. Density functional theory calculations (using B3LYP functional, and two different basis sets) have been performed on the complexes 1 and 2 to provide a qualitative theoretical interpretation of their overall magnetic behavior.

We report on Raman and Ni K-edge x-ray absorption investigations of a NiS2-xSex (with x = 0.00, 0.50/0.55, 0.60, and 1.20) pyrite family. The Ni K-edge absorption edge shows a systematic shift going from an insulating phase (x = 0.00 and 0.50) to a metallic phase (x = 0.60 and 1.20). The near-edge absorption features show a clear evolution with Se doping. The extended x-ray absorption fine structure data reveal the evolution of the local structure with Se doping which mainly governs the local disorder. We also describe the decomposition of the NiS2-xSex Raman spectra and investigate the weights of various phonon modes using Gaussian and Lorentzian profiles. The effectiveness of the fitting models in describing the data is evaluated by means of Bayes factor estimation. The Raman analysis clearly demonstrates the disorder effects due to Se alloying in describing the phonon spectra of NiS2-xSex pyrites.

Dispersion of nanoparticles in polymer nanocomposite films determines the application potential of these systems as novel materials with unique physical properties. Grafting polymers to, mostly inorganic, nanoparticles has been suggested as an effective strategy to enhance dispersion and hence the efficacy of materials. In this review, we discuss the various parameters which control dispersion of polymer grafted nanoparticles in polymer nanocomposite films. We discuss how surface x-ray scattering and microscopy can provide complementary and unique information in thin polymer nanocomposite films to unravel the subtle interplay of entropic and surface interactions, mediated by confinement, that leads to enhanced dispersion of the nanoparticles in these films. By using high-resolution observations of nearly co-temporal and co-spatial Solar Optical Telescope spectropolarimeter and X-Ray Telescope coronal X-ray data onboard Hinode, we revisit the problematic relationship between global magnetic quantities and coronal X-ray brightness. Co-aligned vector magnetogram and X-ray data were used for this study. The total X-ray brightness over active regions is well correlated with integrated magnetic quantities such as the total unsigned magnetic flux, the total unsigned vertical current, and the area-integrated square of the vertical and horizontal magnetic fields. On accounting for the inter-dependence of the magnetic quantities, we inferred that the total magnetic flux is the primary determinant of the observed integrated X-ray brightness. Our observations indicate that a stronger coronal X-ray flux is not related to a higher non-potentiality of active-region magnetic fields. The data even suggest a slightly negative correlation between X-ray brightness and a proxy of active-region non-potentiality. Although there are small numerical differences in the established correlations, the main conclusions are qualitatively consistent over two different X-ray filters, the Al-poly and Ti-poly filters, which confirms the strength of our conclusions and validate and extend earlier studies that used low-resolution data. We discuss the implications of our results and the constraints they set on theories of solar coronal heating.

Pure alpha-Al2O3 exhibits a very high degree of thermodynamical stability among all metal oxides and forms an inert oxide scale in a range of structural alloys at high temperatures. We report that amorphous Al2O3 thin films sputter deposited over crystalline Si instead show a surprisingly active interface. On annealing, crystallization begins with nuclei of a phase closely resembling gamma-Alumina forming almost randomly in an amorphous matrix, and with increasing frequency near the substrate/film interface. This nucleation is marked by the signature appearance of sharp (400) and (440) reflections and the formation of a diffuse diffraction halo with an outer maximal radius of approximate to 0.23 nm enveloping the direct beam. The microstructure then evolves by a cluster-coalescence growth mechanism suggestive of swift nucleation and sluggish diffusional kinetics, while locally the Al ions redistribute slowly from chemisorbed and tetrahedral sites to higher anion coordinated sites. Chemical state plots constructed from XPS data and simple calculations of the diffraction patterns from hypothetically distorted lattices suggest that the true origins of the diffuse diffraction halo are probably related to a complex change in the electronic structure spurred by the a-gamma transformation rather than pure structural disorder. Concurrent to crystallization within the film, a substantially thick interfacial reaction zone also builds up at the film/substrate interface with the excess Al acting as a cationic source. Determination of band offsets at the Al:ZnO/Cu2SnS3 interface using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy
Resumo:
The Al:ZnO/Cu2SnS3 semiconductor heterojunction was fabricated. The structural and optical properties of the semiconductor materials were studied. The band offset at the Al:ZnO/Cu2SnS3 heterojunction was studied using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy technique. From the measurement of the core level energies and valence band maximum of the constituent elements, the valence band offset was calculated to be -1.1 +/- 0.24 eV and the conduction band offset was 0.9 +/- 0.34 eV. The band alignment at the heterojunction was found to be of type-I. The study of Al:ZnO/Cu2SnS3 heterojunction is useful for solar cell applications. (C) 2015 Author(s). Experimental charge density analysis combined with the quantum crystallographic technique of X-ray wavefunction refinement (XWR) provides quantitative insights into the intra-and intermolecular interactions formed by acetazolamide, a diuretic drug. Firstly, the analysis of charge density topology at the intermolecular level shows the presence of exceptionally strong interaction motifs such as a DDAA-AADD (D-donor, A-acceptor) type quadruple hydrogen bond motif and a sulfonamide dimer synthon. The nature and strength of intra-molecular S center dot center dot center dot O chalcogen bonding have been characterized using descriptors from the multipole model (MM) and XWR. Although pure geometrical criteria suggest the possibility of two intra-molecular S center dot center dot center dot O chalcogen bonded ring motifs, only one of them satisfies the ``orbital geometry'' so as to exhibit an interaction in terms of an electron density bond path and a bond critical point. The presence of `s-holes' on the sulfur atom leading to the S center dot center dot center dot O chalcogen bond has been visualized on the electrostatic potential surface and Laplacian isosurfaces close to the `reactive surface'. The electron localizability indicator (ELI) and Roby bond orders derived from the `experimental wave function' provide insights into the nature of S center dot center dot center dot O chalcogen bonding.

Mesophase organization of molecules built with thiophene at the center and linked via flexible spacers to rigid side arm core units and terminal alkoxy chains has been investigated. Thirty homologues realized by varying the span of the spacers as well as the length of the terminal chains have been studied. In addition to the enantiotropic nematic phase observed for all the mesogens, the increase of the spacer as well as the terminal chain lengths resulted in the smectic C phase. The molecular organization in the smectic phase as investigated by temperature dependent X-ray diffraction measurements revealed an interesting behavior that depended on the length of the spacer vis-a-vis the length of the terminal chain. Thus, a tilted interdigitated partial bilayer organization was observed for molecules with a shorter spacer length, while a tilted monolayer arrangement was observed for those with a longer spacer length. High-resolution solid state C-13 NMR studies carried out for representative mesogens indicated a U-shape for all the molecules, indicating that intermolecular interactions and molecular dynamics rather than molecular shape are responsible for the observed behavior. Models for the mesophase organization have been considered and the results understood in terms of segregation of incompatible parts of the mesogens combined with steric frustration leading to the observed lamellar order.

Detailed investigation of the chemical states and local atomic environment of Ni and Zn in the two-phase composites of Zn1-xNixO/NiO was reported. The X-ray photoelectron spectra of both Ni-2p and Zn-2p revealed the existence of a doublet with spin-orbit splitting approximate to 17.9 and 23.2eV, respectively confirming the divalent oxidation state of both Ni and Zn. However, the samples fabricated under oxygen-rich conditions exhibit significant difference in the binding energy approximate to 18.75eV between the 2p3/2 and 2p1/2 states of Ni. The shift in the satellite peaks of Ni-2p with increasing the Ni composition x within the Zn1-xNixO/NiO matrix signifies the attenuation of nonlocal screening because of reduced site occupancy of two adjacent Zn ions. The temperature dependence of X-ray diffraction analysis reveals a large distortion in the axial-rhombohedral angle for oxygen-rich NiO. Conversely, no significant distortion was noticed in the NiO system present as a secondary phase within Zn1-xNixO. Nevertheless, the unit-cell volume of both wurtzite h.c.p. Zn1-xNixO and f.c.c. NiO exhibits an anomalous behavior between 150 and 300 degrees C. The origin of such unusual change in the unit-cell volume was discussed in terms of oxygen stoichiometry.
