A large number of newly published and unpublished hectare plots in Amazonia and the Guiana Shield area allow an analysis of family composition and testing of hypotheses concerning alpha-diversity in the south American rain forest. Using data from 94 plots the family-level floristic patterns in wet tropical South America are described. To test diversity patterns, 268 plots are used in this large area. Contrary to a widely held belief, western Amazonian plots are not necessarily the most diverse. Several central Amazonian plots have equal or even higher tree diversity. Annual rainfall is not a good estimator for tree diversity in the Amazonia area and Guiana shield. Plots in the Guiana Shield area (and eastern Amazonia) usually have lower diversity than those in central or western Amazonia. It is argued that this is not because of low rainfall or low nutrient status of the soil but because of the small area of the relatively isolated rain forest area in eastern Amazonia and the Guiana Shield. The low diversity on nutrient-poor white sand soils in the Amazon basin is not necessarily due to their Low nutrient status but is, at least partly, caused by their small extent and fragmented nature.

In an area of tropical seasonal semideciduous forest, the soil characteristics, floristic composition, physiognomic structure, and the distribution of three regeneration and three dispersal guilds were studied for four stands within the forest that had documented histories of varying degrees of human disturbance. The aim was to study forest regeneration in areas of preserved forest and secondary forest, with parts of both types of forest experiencing either 'intensive' or 'occasional' cattle trampling. The study was carried out in the Sebastiao Aleixo da Silva Ecological Station, Bauru, São Paulo State, Brazil. Two stands were called 'secondary' because they corresponded to forest tracts that were felled and occupied by crops and pastures in the past and then abandoned to forest regeneration ca. 40 years before this study. The other two stands, called 'preserved', corresponded to areas of the fragment where the forest has been maintained with only minor human impacts. The arboreal component of the tree community (diameter at breast height or dbh greater than or equal to 5 cm) was sampled in 20 plots of 40 m x 40 m, and the subarboreal component (diameter at the base of the stem or dbs < 5 cm and height greater than or equal to 0.5 m) in subplots of 40 m x 2 m. Physiognomic features, such as canopy height and density of climbing plants, were registered all over a 5 m x 5 m gridline laid on the sample plots. Soil bulk samples were collected for chemical and textural analyses. Most detected differences contrasted the secondary to the preserved forest stands. The soils of the secondary stands showed higher proportions of sand and lower levels of mineral nutrients and organic matter than those of the preserved stands, probably due to higher losses by leaching and erosion. Compared to the secondary stands, the preserved ones had higher proportions of tall trees, higher mean canopy height, lower species diversity, higher abundance of autochorous and shade-tolerant climax species, and lower abundance of pioneer and light-demanding climax species. Despite the high proportion of species shared by the preserved and secondary stands (108 out of 139), they differed consistently in terms of density of the most abundant species. on the other hand, the secondary and preserved stands held similar values for tree density and basal area, suggesting that 40 years were enough to restore these features. Effects of cattle trampling on the vegetation were detected for the frequency of trees of anemochorous and zoochorous species, which were higher in the stands under occasional and intensive cattle trampling, respectively. The density of thin climbers was lower in the stands with intensive trampling. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) from solids has proven to be technically feasible for almost any system; nonetheless, its economical viability has been proven for a restricted number of systems. A common practice is to compare the cost of manufacturing of vegetable extracts by a variety of techniques without deeply considering the huge differences in composition and functional properties among the various types of extracts obtained; under this circumstance, the cost of manufacturing do not favor SFE. Additionally, the influence of external parameters such as the agronomic conditions and the SFE system geometry are not considered. In the present work, these factors were studied for the system fennel seeds + CO2. The effects of the harvesting season and the degree of maturation on the global yields for the system fennel seeds + CO2 were analyzed at 300 bar and 40 degrees C. The effects of the pressure on the global yields were determined for the temperatures of 30 and 40 degrees C. Kinetics experiments were done for various ratios of bed height to bed diameter. Fennel extracts were also obtained by hydrodistillation and low-pressure solvent extraction. The chemical composition of the fennel extracts were determined by gas chromatography. The SFE maximum global yield (12.5%, dry basis) was obtained with dry harvested fennel seeds. Anethole and fenchone were the major constituents of the extract; the following fat acids palmitic (C16H32O2), palmitoleic stearic (C18H36O2), oleic (C18H34O2), linoleic (C18H32O2) and linolenic (C18H30O2) were also detected in the extracts. A relation between amounts of feed and solvent, bed height and diameter, and solvent flow rate was proposed. The models of Sovova, Goto et al. and Tan and Lion were capable of describing the mass transfer kinetics. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Flotation is a process of cell separation based on the affinity of cells to air bubbles. In the present work, flotability and hydrophobicity were determined using cells from different yeasts (Hansenulla polymorpha, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Candida albicans), which were propagated in different media and at different temperatures. Alterations to the supernatant of the cells were also carried out before the flotation assays. The results described here indicate that supernatants of the yeast cells can play a more important role on flotation than cell-wall hydrophobicity. For example, wall-hydrophobicity of strain FLT-01 of S. cerevisiae was high but flotation did not occur when their washed cells were resuspended in water. Additions of neopeptone to cultures of S. cerevisiae and H. polymorpha repressed flotation and increased the volume of foam. An additional task of the present work was to show that the relationship between cell-wall hydrophobicity and flotation performance was dependent on the method used for the measurement of hydrophobicity. Based on the assay procedure, two types of hydrophobicity were distinguished: (a) the apparent hydrophobicity for cells suspended in the medium and expressed by the degree of cell affinity to the organic solvent in the two-phase system supernatant/hexane; (b) the standard hydrophobicity, which was determined for cells suspended in a standard solution (acetate buffer, in the present work) within the acetate buffer/hexane system. Flotation of cells of S. cerevisiae and C albicans were best related to the degree of apparent hydrophobicity (varying with the supernatant composition at the cell/medium interface) rather than to the degree of standard hydrophobicity (varying with the alterations in the wall components, since the liquid phase was constant in the assay). However, depending on the yeast unpredictable results can be obtained. For example, cells of H. polymorpha exhibited good flotation associated to a high degree of standard hydrophobicity while having a lower degree of apparent hydrophobicity. Concerning growth temperature, flotation of cells of C albicans was strongly repressed when the temperature was raised from 30 to 38 degreesC while a similar effect was not observed in cultures of S. cerevisiae and H. polymorpha. It is difficult to understand and predict flotation of yeast cells but simple modifications made to the supernatant of cultures can activate or repress flotation. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. B.V. Aiming at evaluating the use of those byproducts on ruminant feeding an experiment has been carried out in the Forage Research department (www.npf.ufc.br), in order to evaluate the effects of addition of increasing levels of mango processing byproducts (MB) in Elephant grass silages. Twenty experimental silos made of PVC pipe (100 x 340 mm), in a completely randomized design with 5 levels of addition (0; 5; 10; 15; and 20%) of MB and 4 replications. Upon 32 days of ensilage, samples were collected for determination of levels of dry Matter (DM), crude protein (CP), ethereal extract (EE), neutral detergent fiber (NDF), acid detergent fiber (ADF), hemicelluloses (HC), ammonia nitrogen (N-NH3), and pH values. Data were evaluated by analyses of variance and regression analyses using the F test at the 5% level. The levels of DM and CP increased of 0.50 and 0.03 percentage units, respectively, for every 1% of MB added. The levels of NDF and ADF decreased of 0.51 and 0.24 percentage units, respectively, for every 1% of MB added. The levels of N-NH3 decreased from 4 to 23 percentage units while pH values remained constant (p>0.05), with average values of 3.29. Addition of 20% of MB improved silages chemical composition by promoting an increase in the levels of MS and reduction in the levels of fiber.

Polymer films were grown in rf discharges containing different proportions of C2H2 and SF6. Quantitative optical emission spectrometry (actinometry) was used to follow the trends in the plasma concentrations of the species H and F, and more tentatively, of CH, CF, and CF2, as a function of the feed composition. Infrared spectroscopy revealed the density of CH and CF bonds in the deposited material. As the partial pressure of SF6 in the feed was increased, the degree of fluorination of the polymer also rose. The form of the dependency of the deposition rate on the proportion of SF6 in the feed was in good qualitative agreement with the activated growth model. From transmission ultraviolet visible spectroscopy data the refractive index and the absorption coefficient of the polymers were calculated as a function of the deposition parameters. Since the optical gap depended to some extent upon the degree of fluorination, it could, within limits, be determined by a suitable choice of the proportion of SF6 in the feed. A qualitative explanation of this relationship is given.

Buffalo meat production has been arising interest breeder and emerges as alternative to consumer, more and more demanding of the quality products. Thus, this research was conducted to study the chemical composition and tenderness of Longissimus dorsi muscle from 10 non-castrated Murrah buffaloes slaughtered at different weights. The research was carried in feedlot of School of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science of the São Paulo State University, Botucatu, São Paulo, Brazil. Animals were divided in two groups, received diet ad libitum and slaughtered when reached 450 and 500 kg of live weight. The experiment design was completely randomized, with five repetitions to each treatment. Meat sample from Longissimus dorsi muscle, taken between 12(th) and 13(th) ribs, were carried analysis of moisture, crude protein, fat, ash, Longissimus muscle area (LMA), fat thickness (FT), marbling, calorie and tenderness. It did not have significant difference between the groups. Average values at of 76.0; 20.7; 2.1 and 1.2 of moisture, crude protein, fat and ash respectively, were obtained. Calorie, tenderness, LMA, FT and marbling were obtained at average values of 132 kca1/100g; 3.94 kgf; 34.2 cm(2); 5.9 mm and 2 points, respectively. Values obtained for tenderness are similar in the literature and has been proving that buffalo meat is tender (< 5kgf). Positive correlation was observed between the protein percentage and the shear force of the meat. The buffalo meat is excellent alternative source of red protein of high biological value to feeding of Brazilian consumers.

The relation between the composition and electronic structure of the perfectly inverse spinel compound Zn7-xMxSb2O12 (M = Ni and Co) has been studied by powder X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Changes in the site occupancy are associated with shifts in the core levels as observed in the core level spectral analyses. The configuration of the density of states in the valence band due to the Co and Ni states can be observed in the valence band spectra. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
