Tradesperson or artist? A critical exploration of chefs' job satisfaction and turnover

The interest in experiential and embodied aspects of brand and other product usage is under-represented in tourism orientated research, which generally falls to develop a contextualised understanding of the relationships between products and consumers, and within this in particular, considerations of individuality and self, embodiment, emotion and sensation. Aiming to `reverse the causality' (Lannon and Cooper 1983:201) of consumption focused tourism research, in this paper, I draw on the tourism experiences of Audrey, a participant in a larger study to reveal how, rather than just `consuming', tourism consumers interpret the meaning and values in a wide range of products and objects, weaving individual, rich, sensory, embodied experiences which are informed by the interactions and relationships with activities and products, and by their own personalities, past experiences and aspirations. Audrey is highly conscious of her self and of elsewhereness, hers are fragile, self-indulgent, tactile experiences which offer the freedom to step out of everyday life roles into other time and situational spheres where environment, objects and sensory stimulation are paramount. "Crack down on the celebrity junkies": does media coverage of celebrity drug use pose a risk to young people?

This study analysed news media content to examine the role played by celebrity drug use in young people's perceptions of drug use. We know that young people have access to discourses of drug use through music and other media which may emphasise short term gains (of pleasure or sexual success) over longer term health and social problems. This study goes beyond a simple modelling approach by using Media Framing Analysis (MFA) to take an in-depth look at the messages themselves and how they are 'framed'. New stories about Amy Winehouse's drug use were used and we conducted focus groups with young people asking them questions about drugs, celebrity and the media. Frames identified include: 'troubled genius', 'losing patience' and 'glamorization or gritty realism'. Initially, the press championed Winehouse's musical talent but soon began to tire of her recklessness; the participants tended to be unimpressed with Winehouse's drug use, characterising her as a promising artist who had 'gone off the rails'. Young people were far more critical of Winehouse than might be expected, demonstrating that concerns about the influence of celebrity drug use and its impact on future health risk behaviour among young people may have been over-simplified and exaggerated. This study illustrates the need to understand young people and their frames of reference within popular culture when designing drug awareness information relevant to them. Furthermore, it indicates that critical media skills analysis may contribute to health risk education programmes related to drug use.

Wayside Trees of Tropical Florida : a guide to the native and exotic trees and palms of Miami and tropical south Florida

Wayside Trees is an beautifully illustrated guide to Florida trees growing south of Lake Okeechobee. It covers both native and exotic species in the areas of Miami to Palm Beach on the east coast, and Naples to Fort Meyers on the west. The introduction describes environmental, cultural and economic importance of trees, while a non-technical key provides a means for even non-specialists to identify the 167 most common species. The bulk of the book consists of illustrated descriptions of the trees, arranged by plant family, and includes ecological and cultural information on each species. Lavishly illustrated with over 1200 color photographs and diagrams, the book is designed to serve homeowners, gardeners, teachers and students, as well as environmental professionals. It is also a useful guide to urban tropical trees growing outside south Florida. The authors, a botanist and a graphic artist, have 70 collective years of experience living, working, and loving the trees of south Florida.

Calle Ocho revived : artists studios commemorate the role of Cuban exiles (1960-1973) in the development of Calle Ocho

The purpose of this study was to learn about the historical development of Eight Street in order to use this information in the revitalization of this area with the new migration of artists. This study demonstrated a cyclical pattern prompted by the economical success of the immigrant group. The 1960 Cuban migration brought an era of life to Eight Street. As the Cubans became successful they left the area causing a decline. Presently the area is witnessing a migration of artists that may bring it new life. The thesis retrofits buildings in this area to create a series of artist studios. These studios are designed using elements of 1960 Cuban urbanity, an era of robust urban life for this street.
