The performance of La(2-x)Ce(x)Cu(1-y)Zn(y)O(4) perovskites as catalysts for the high temperature water-gas shift reaction (H T-W G S R) was investigated. The catalysts were characterized by EDS, XRD, BET surface area, TPR, and XANES. The results showed that all the perovskites exhibited the La(2)CuO(4) orthorhombic structure, so the Pechini method is suitable for the preparation of pure perovskite. However, the La(1.90)Ce(0.10)CuO(4) perovskite alone, when calcined at 350/700 degrees C, also showed a (La(0.935)Ce(0.065))(2)CuO(4) perovskite with tetragonal structure, which produced a surface area higher than the other perovskites. The perovskites that exhibited the best catalytic performance were those calcined at 350/700 degrees C and, among these, La(1.90)Ce(0.10)CuO(4) was outstanding, probably because of the high surface area associated with the presence of the (La(0.935)Ce(0.065))(2)CuO(4) perovskite with tetragonal structure and orthorhombic La(2)CuO(4) phase.

Nickel catalysts with a load of 5 wt% Ni, supported on pure ZrO(2) and ZrO(2) stabilized with 4, 8 and 14 mol% CaO, were prepared by the polymerization method. The samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), temperature-programmed reduction with hydrogen (TPR-H(2)), specific surface area (BET) and impedance spectroscopy (IS) and tested in the carbon dioxide reforming of methane. The XRD patterns showed the presence of the oxide precursor (NiO) and the tetragonal phase of CaO-ZrO(2) solid solutions. According to the TPR-H(2) analysis, the reduction of various NiO species was influenced by the support composition. The electrical properties of the support have a proportional effect on the catalytic activities. Catalytic tests were done at 800 degrees C for 6 h and the composition of the gaseous products and the catalytic conversion depended on the CaO-ZrO(2) solid solution composition and its influence on supported NiO species. A direct relation was found between the variation in the electrical conductivity of the support, the nickel species supported on it and the performance in the catalytic tests. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. Nickel catalysts with a load of 5 wt.% Ni, supported on pure ZrO(2) and ZrO(2) stabilized with 4 mol%, 8 mol% and 12 mol% of Y(2)O(3), were prepared by the polymerization method. The samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), temperature-programmed reduction with hydrogen (TPR-H(2)), specific surface area (BET) and electronic paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and tested as catalysts for carbon dioxide reforming of methane. The XRD patterns showed the presence of the oxide precursor (NiO) and the tetragonal phase of a Y(2)O(3)-ZrO(2) solid solution. According to the TPR-H(2) analysis, the reduction of various NiO species was influenced by the composition of the support. Catalytic tests were conducted at 800 degrees C for 6 h, and the composition of the gaseous products and the catalytic conversion rate depended on the composition of the Y(2)O(3)-ZrO(2) solid solution and its influence on the supported NiO species. A direct relation was observed between the variation in the support, the nickel species supported on it and the performance in the catalytic tests. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The synthesis and self-assembly of tetragonal phase-containing L1(0)-Fe(55)Pt(45) nanorods with high coercive field is described. The experimental procedure resulted in a tetragonal/cubic phase ratio close to 1:1 for the as-synthesized nanoparticles. Using different surfactant/solvent proportions in the process allowed control of particle morphology from nanospheres to nanowires. Monodisperse nanorods with lengths of 60 +/- 5 nm and diameters of 2-3 nm were self-assembled in a perpendicular oriented array onto a substrate surface using hexadecylamine as organic spacer. Magnetic alignment and properties assigned, respectively, to the shape anisotropy and the tetragonal phase suggest that the self-assembled materials are a strong candidate to solve the problem of random magnetic alignment observed in FePt nanospheres leading to applications in ultrahigh magnetic recording (UHMR) systems capable of achieving a performance of the order of terabits/in(2).

Single-phase perovskite structure Pb(1-x)Ba(x)TiO(3) thin films (x = 0.30, 0.50 and 0.70) were deposited on Pt/Ti/SiO(2)/Si substrates by the spin-coating technique. The dielectric study reveals that the thin films undergo a diffuse type ferroelectric phase transition, which shows a broad peak. An increase of the diffusivity degree with the increasing Barium contents was observed, and it was associated to a grain decrease in the studied composition range. The temperature dependence of the phonon frequencies was used to characterize the phase transition temperatures. Raman modes persist above tetragonal to cubic phase transition temperature, although all optical modes should be Raman inactive. The origin of these modes was interpreted in terms of breakdown of the local cubic symmetry by chemical disorder. The absence of a well-defined transition temperature and the presence of broad bands in some interval temperature above FE-PE phase transition temperature Suggested a diffuse type phase transition. This result corroborates the dielectric constant versus temperature data, which showed a broad ferroelectric phase transition in these thin films. The leakage Current density of the PBT thin films was studied at different temperatures and the data follow the Schottky emission model. Through this analysis the Schottky barrier height values 0.75, 0.53 and 0.34 eV were obtained to the PBT70, PBT50 and PBT30 thin films, respectively. (C) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Recent studies are investigating a new class of inorganic materials which arise as a promising option for high performance applications in the field of photoluminescence. Highlight for rare earth (TR +3 ) doped, which have a high luminous efficiency, long decay time and being able to emit radiation in the visible range, specific to each element. In this study, we synthesized ZrO2: Tb +3 , Eu +3 , Tm +3 nanoparticles complex polymerization method (CPM). We investigated the influences caused by the heat treatment temperature and the content of dopants in zirconia photoluminescent behavior. The particles were calcined at temperature of 400, 500 and 600 ° C for two hours and ranged in concentration of dopants 1, 2, 4 and 8 mol% TR +3 . The samples were characterized by thermal analysis, X-ray diffraction, photoluminescence of measurements and uv-visible of spectroscopies. The results of X-ray diffraction confirmed the formation of the tetragonal and cubic phases in accordance with the content of dopants. The photoluminescence spectra show emission in the region corresponding simultaneous to blue (450 nm), green (550 nm) and red (615 nm). According to the results, ZrO2 particles co-doped with rare earth ions is a promising material white emission with a potential application in the field of photoluminescence

In the work described by this paper, we studied the development of a selective potassium ion sensor constituted of a carbon paste electrode modified (CPEM) with a novel KSr(2)Nb(2)O(15). The material KSr(2)Nb(2)O(15) is an oxide with the tetragonal tungsten bronze structure (TTB) type are in forefront both in the area of research as well as in industrial applications. The sensor response to potassium ions was linear in the concentration range 1.26 x 10(-5) at 1.62 x 10(-3) mol L(-1) (E (mV) = 32.7 + 51.1 log [K(+)]). The sensor based KSr(2)Nb(2)O(15), of the TTB-type presented very good potentiometric response, with a slope of 51.1 mV/dec (at 25 degrees C) and detection limit for the potassium ions of 7.27 x 10(-5) mol.L(-1)

The FePt alloy undergoes the cubic to tetragonal lattice transformation in the ferromagnetic state. We calculated the electronic structure for both cubic and tetragonal structures using the FPLAPW method with APW + lo. Comparing the density of states of the cubic and tetragonal structures, it is expected that the lattice transformation is caused by the band Jahn-Teller effect. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V.
