FT-IR data of six terminally blocked tripeptides containing Acp (epsilon-aminocaproic acid) reveals that all of them form supramolecular beta-sheets in the solid state. Single crystal X-ray diffraction studies of two peptides not only support this data but also disclose the fact that the supramolecular beta-sheet formation is initiated via dimer formation. The Scanning Electron Microscopic images of all peptides exhibit amyloid-like fibrils that show green birefringence after binding with Congo red, which is a characteristic feature of many neurodegenerative disease causing amyloid fibrils. Three new polynuclear copper(II) complexes of singly deprotonated L-glutamic acid (L-glu), {[Cu(bipy)(2)][Cu(bipy)(L-glu)H2O](2)(BF4)(4)center dot(H2O)(3)}(n) (1), {[Cu(bipy)(L-glu)H2O][Cu(bipy)(L-glu)(ClO4)]( ClO4)center dot(H2O)(2)}(n) ((2)) and [Cu(phen)(L-glu)H2O](2)(NO3)(2)center dot(H2O)(4) (3) (bipy = 2,2-bipyridine, phen = 1,10-phenanthroline), were synthesized in acidic pH (ca. 2.5) and characterized structurally. In all the complexes, L-glutamic acid acts as a bidentate chelating ligand, leaving the protonated carboxylic acid free. Both in 1 and 2, two different types of species [Cu(bipy)(2)](BF4)(2) and [Cu(bipy)(L-glu)H2O] BF4 for 1 and [Cu(bipy)(L-glu)H2O]ClO4 and [Cu(bipy)(L-glu)(ClO4)] for 2 coexist in the solid state. In complex 1, the [C( bipy)(L-glu)H2O]+ units are joined together by syn-anti carboxylate bridges to form an enantiopure (M) helical chain and the [Cu(bipy)(2)](2+) presents a very rare example of the four-coordinate distorted tetrahedral geometry of Cu(II). In complex 2, the [Cu(bipy)(L gluClO(4))] units are joined together by weakly coordinating perchlorate ions to form a 1D polymeric chain while the [Cu(bipy)(L-glu)H2O]+ units remain as mononuclear species. The different coordinating ability of the two counter anions along with their involvement in the H-bonding network seems likely to be responsible for the difference in the final polymeric structures in the two compounds. Variable-temperature (2-300 K) magnetic susceptibility measurements show negligible coupling for both the complexes. The structure of 3 consists of two independent monomeric [Cu(phen)(L-glu)H2O]+ cations, two nitrate anions and four water molecules. The copper atom occupies a five-coordinate square pyramidal environment with a water molecule in the axial position.

A novel supramolecular polymer system, in which the terminal pyrenyl groups of a polyamide intercalate into the chain-folds of a polyimide via electronically-complementary pi-pi stacking, shows both enhanced mechanical properties relative to those of its individual components and facile healing characteristics as a result of the thermoreversibility of non-covalent interactions.

Utilising supramolecular pi-pi stacking interactions to drive miscibility in two-component polymer blends offers a novel approach to producing materials with unique properties. We report in this paper the preparation of a supramolecular polymer network that exploits this principle. A low molecular weight polydiimide which contains multiple pi-electron-poor receptor sites along its backbone forms homogeneous films with a siloxane polymer that features pi-electron-rich pyrenyl end-groups. Compatibility results from a complexation process that involves chain-folding of the polydiimide to create an optimum binding site for the pi-electron-rich chain ends of the polysiloxane. These complementary pi-electron-rich and -poor receptors exhibit rapid and reversible complexation behaviour in solution, and healable characteristics in the solid state in response to temperature. A mechanism is proposed for this thermoreversible healing behaviour that involves disruption of the intermolecular pi-pi stacking cross-links as the temperature of the supramolecular film is increased. The low T-g siloxane component can then flow and as the temperature of the blend is decreased, pi-pi stacking interactions drive formation of a new network and so lead to good damage-recovery characteristics of the two-component blend.

We study the effects of hydrostatic pressure (P) on aqueous solutions and gels of the block copolymer B20E610 (E, oxyethylene; B, oxybutylene; subscripts, number of repeats), by performing simultaneous small angle neutron scattering/pressure experiments. Micellar cubic gels were studied for 9.5 and 4.5 wt% B20E610 at T = 20-80 and 35-55 degrees C, respectively, while micellar isotropic solutions where Studied for 4.5 wt% B20E610 at T > 55 degrees C. We observed that the interplanar distance d(110) (cubic unit cell parameter a = root 2d(110)) decreases while the correlation length of the Cubic order (delta) increases, upon increasing P at a fixed T for 9.5 wt% B20E610. The construction of master Curves for d(110) and delta corresponding to 9.5 wt% B20E610 proved the correlation between changes in T and P. Neither d(110) and delta nor the cubic-isotropic phase transition temperature was affected by the applied pressure for 4.5 wt% B20E610. The dramatic contrast between the pressure-induced behavior observed for 9.5 and 4.5 wt% B20E610 suggests that pressure induced effects might be more effectively transmitted through samples that present wider domains of cubic structure order (9.5 wt% compared to 4.5 wt% B20E610).

The self-assembly into wormlike micelles of a poly(ethylene oxide)-b-poly(propylene oxide)-b-poly(ethylene oxide) triblock copolymer Pluronic P84 in aqueous salt solution (2 M NaCl) has been studied by rheology, small-angle X-ray and neutron scattering (SAXS/SANS), and light scattering. Measurements of the flow curves by controlled stress rheometry indicated phase separation under flow. SAXS on solutions subjected to capillary flow showed alignment of micelles at intermediate shear rates, although loss of alignment was observed for high shear rates. For dilute solutions, SAXS and static light scattering data on unaligned samples could be superposed over three decades in scattering vector, providing unique information on the wormlike micelle structure over several length scales. SANS data provided information on even shorter length scales, in particular, concerning "blob" scattering from the micelle corona. The data could be modeled based on a system of semiflexible self-avoiding cylinders with a circular cross-section, as described by the wormlike chain model with excluded volume interactions. The micelle structure was compared at two temperatures close to the cloud point (47 degrees C). The micellar radius was found not to vary with temperature in this region, although the contour length increased with increasing temperature, whereas the Kuhn length decreased. These variations result in an increase of the low-concentration radius of gyration with increasing temperature. This was consistent with dynamic light scattering results, and, applying theoretical results from the literature, this is in agreement with an increase in endcap energy due to changes in hydration of the poly(ethylene oxide) blocks as the temperature is increased.

The confined crystallization of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) in predominantly spherical microdomains formed by several diblock copolymers was studied and compared. Two polybutadiene-b-poly(ethylene oxide) diblock copolymers were prepared by sequential anionic polymerization (with approximately 90 and 80 wt % polybutadiene (PB)). These were compared to equivalent samples after catalytic hydrogenation that produced double crystalline polyethylene-b-poly(ethylene oxide) diblock copolymers. Both systems are segregated into microdomains as indicated by small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) experiments performed in the melt and at lower temperatures. However, the PB-b-PEO systems exhibited a higher degree of order in the melt. A predominantly spherical morphology of PEO in a PB or a PE matrix was observed by both SAXS and transmission electron microscopy, although a possibly mixed morphology (spheres and cylinders) was formed when the PEO composition was close to the cylinder-sphere domain transitional composition as indicated by SAXS. Differential scanning calorimetry experiments showed that a fractionated crystallization process for the PEO occurred in all samples, indicating that the PE cannot nucleate PEO in these diblock copolymers. A novel result was the observation of a subsequent fractionated melting that reflected the crystallization process. Sequential isothermal crystallization experiments allowed us to thermally separate at least three different crystallization and melting peaks for the PEO microdomains. The lowest melting point fraction was the most important in terms of quantity and corresponded to the crystallization of isolated PEO spheres (or cylinders) that were either superficially or homogeneously nucleated. This was confirmed by Avrami index values of approximately 1. The isothermal crystallization results indicate that the PE matrix restricts the crystallization of the covalently bonded PEO to a higher degree compared to PB.

Gel diagrams based on tube inversion and oscillatory rheometry are reported for Pluronic copolymers F127 (E98P67E98) and P123 (E21P67E21) in mixtures with anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS). Total concentrations (e, SDS+copolymer) were as high as 50 wt% with mole ratios SDS/copolymer (mr) in the ranges 1-5 (F127) a lid 1-7 (PI 23). Temperatures were its high as 90 degrees C. Determination of the temperature dependences of the dynamic moduli served to confirm the gel boundaries from tube inversion and to reveal the high elastic moduli of the gels, e.g., compared at corn parable positions in the gel phase, a 50 wt% SDS/P123 wit h mr = 7 had G' three times that of a corresponding gel of P123 alone. Sin all-angle X-ray scattering (SAX S) was used to show that the structures of all the SDS/F127 gels were bee and that the structures of the SDS/P123 gels with mr = I were either fcc(c = 30 wt%) or hex (c = 40 wt%). Assignment of structures to SDS/P123 gels with values of mr in the range 3-7 was more difficult, as high-order scattering peaks Could be very weak, and at the higher values of c and mr, the SAXS peaks included multiple reflections.

The 28-membered octaazamacrocycle Me-2[28]py(2)N(6) was used as a receptor for the molecular recognition of aromatic and aliphatic carboxylate substrates. The receptor-substrate binding behaviour of (H6Me2[28]py(2)N(6))(6+) with an aliphatic (-O2C(CH2)(n)CO2-, n=0 to 4) and an aromatic (phthalate, isophthalate, terephthalate, 4,4'-dibenzoate, benzoate, 3- and 4-nitrobenzoate) series of carboxylate anions was evaluated by H-1 NMR spectroscopy (carried out in DMSO-d(6) at 300 K). Two association constants were found for most of the studied cases, except for 3- and 4-nitrobenzoate for which only K-1 was determined. For oxalate, malonate, benzoate and dibenzoate anions only the beta(2) constants could be obtained. The values of the first association constant cover a range from 2.86 to 3.69 (log units), and the second stepwise constant from 2.15 to 2.89 (also in log units). No special selectivity was found but the highest values were determined for adipate and the lowest for the monoprotic 3- and 4-nitrobenzoates. Single crystal X-ray structures of H6Me2[28]py(2)N(6)(6+) with terephthalate, 1, and 4,4'-dibenzoate (2) were determined showing supramolecular entities with general formula (H6Me2[28]py(2)N(6)).(substrate)(2)(PF6)(2).4H(2)O. These anions are the building blocks of an extensive 3-D network of hydrogen bonds.

The terminally protected tripeptide Boc-Ala(1)-Leu(2)-Ala(3)-OMe 1 forms antiparallel hydrogen-bonded dimers of two different conformers in the asymmetric unit and the individual dimers then self-associate to form supramolecular beta-sheet structures in crystals and amyloid-like fibrils in the solid state.

Helices and sheets are ubiquitous in nature. However, there are also some examples of self-assembling molecules forming supramolecular helices and sheets in unnatural systems. Unlike supramolecular sheets there are a very few examples of peptide sub-units that can be used to construct supramolecular helical architectures using the backbone hydrogen bonding functionalities of peptides. In this report we describe the design and synthesis of two single turn/bend forming peptides (Boc-Phe-Aib-Ile-OMe 1 and Boc-Ala-Leu-Aib-OMe 2) (Aib: alpha-aminoisobutyric acid) and a series of double-turn forming peptides (Boc-Phe-Aib-IIe-Aib-OMe 3, Boc-Leu-Aib-Gly-Aib-OMe 4 and Boc-gamma-Abu-Aib-Leu-Aib-OMe 5) (gamma-Abu: gamma-aminobutyric acid). It has been found that, in crystals, on self-assembly, single turn/bend forming peptides form either a supramolecular sheet (peptide 1) or a supramolecular helix (peptide 2). unlike self-associating double turn forming peptides, which have only the option of forming supramolecular helical assemblages. it has been established that triazinyl bipyridines (hemi-BTPs) and bis-triazinyl pyridines (BTPs), ligands which are currently being investigated as possible ligands for the separation of actinides from lanthanides in nuclear waste, are able to form homoleptic complexes with first row transition metals such as cobalt(IT), copper(II), iron(II), manganese(II), nickel(II) and zinc(II). The metal complexes exhibit six-co-ordinate octahedral structures and redox states largely analogous to those of the related terpyridine complexes. The reactivity of the different redox states of cobalt bis-hemi-BTP complex in aqueous environments has been studied with two-phase electrochemistry by immobilisation of the essentially water-insoluble metal complexes on graphite electrodes and the immersion of this modified electrode in an aqueous electrolyte. It was found that redox potentials for the metal-centred reactions were pH-independent whereas the potentials for the ligand-centred reactions were strongly pH-dependent. The reductive degradation of these complexes has been investigated by computational methods. Solvent extraction experiments have been carried out for a range of metals and these show that cobalt(II) and nickel(II) as well as palladium(II), cadmium(II) and lead(II) were all extracted with the ligands 1e and 2c with higher distribution ratios that was observed for americium(III) under the same conditions. The implications of this result for the use of these ligands to separate actinides from nuclear waste are discussed. (c) 2005 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Single crystal X-ray diffraction studies show that the beta-turn structure of tetrapeptide I, Boc-Gly-Phe-Aib-Leu-OMe (Aib: alpha-amino isobutyric acid) self-assembles to a supramolecular helix through intermolecular hydrogen bonding along the crystallographic a axis. By contrast the beta-turn structure of an isomeric tetrapeptide II, Boc-Gly-Leu-Aib-Phe-OMe self-assembles to a supramolecular beta-sheet-like structure via a two-dimensional (a, b axis) intermolecular hydrogen bonding network and pi-pi interactions. FT-IR studies of the peptides revealed that both of them form intermolecularly hydrogen bonded supramolecular structures in the solid state. Field emission scanning electron micrographs (FE-SEM) of the dried fibrous materials of the peptides show different morphologies, non-twisted filaments in case of peptide I and non-twisted filaments and ribbon-like structures in case of peptide II.

The tetradentate ligand (C-5-BTBP) was able to extract americium(III) selectively from nitric acid. In octanol/kerosene the distribution ratios suggest that stripping will be possible. C-5-BTBP has unusual properties and potentially offers a means of separating metals, which otherwise are difficult to separate. For example C-5-BTBP has the potential to separate paliadium(II) from a mixture containing rhodium(III) and ruthenium(H) nitrosyl. In addition, C-5-BTBP has the potential to remove traces of cadmium from effluent or from solutions of other metals contaminated with cadmium. C-5-BTBP has potential as a reagent for the separation of americium(III) from solutions contaminated with iron(III) and nickel(II), hence offering a means of concentrating americium(III) for analytical purposes from nitric acid solutions containing high concentrations of iron(III) or nickel(II).

Several novel compounds with the non-linear optical chromophore 2-amino-5-nitropyridine (2A5NP) and Keggin polyoxoanions (alpha-isomers), having the general formula (2A5NP)(m)H-n[XM12O40]center dot xH(2)O, M = Mo, W, were synthesised. Compounds were obtained with X = P, n = 3, m = 3 and 4 and X = Si, n = m = 4 ( x = 2 - 6). Thus, for each of the anions [PMo12O40](3-) and [PW12O40](3-) two different compounds were obtained, with the same anion and organic counterpart but with a different stoichiometric ratio. These presented different charge transfer properties and thermal stability. All compounds were characterised by spectroscopic and analytical techniques. The single crystal X-ray diffraction structure of (2A5NP)(4)H-3[PMo12O40]center dot 2.5H(2)O center dot 0.5C(2)H(5)OH showed that the water solvent molecules and the organic chromophores are assembled via infinite one-dimensional chains of hydrogen bonds with formation of open channels, which accommodate [ PMo12O40] 3- and ethanol solvent molecules.
