Fiber-reinforced composite fixed dental prostheses – Studies of the materials used as pontics University of Turku, Faculty of Medicine, Institute of Dentistry, Department of Biomaterials Science, Finnish Doctoral Program in Oral Sciences – FINDOS, Annales Universitatis Turkuensis, Turku, Finland 2015 Fiber-reinforced composites (FRC), a non-metallic biomaterial, represent a suitable alternative in prosthetic dentistry when used as a component of fixed dental prostheses (FDPs). Some drawbacks have been identified in the clinical performance of FRC restorations, such as delamination of the veneering material and fracture of the pontic. Therefore, the current series of studies were performed to investigate the possibilities of enhancing the mechanical and physical properties of FRC FDPs by improving the materials used as pontics, to then heighten their longevity. Four experiments showed the importance of the pontic design and surface treatment in the performance of FRC FDPs. In the first, the load-bearing capacities of inlay-retained FRC FDPs with pontics of various materials and thicknesses were evaluated. Three different pontic materials were assessed with different FRC framework vertical positioning. Thicker pontics showed increased load-bearing capacities, especially ceramic pontics. A second study was completed investigating the influence of the chemical conditioning of the ridge-lap surface of acrylic resin denture teeth on their bonding to a composite resin. Increased shear bond strength demonstrated the positive influence of the pretreatment of the acrylic surfaces, indicating dissolution of the denture surfaces, and suggesting potential penetration of the monomer systems into the surface of denture teeth. A third study analyzed the penetration depth of different monomer systems on the acrylic resin denture teeth surfaces. The possibility of establishing a durable bond between acrylic pontics and FRC frameworks was demonstrated by the ability of monomers to penetrate the surface of acrylic resin denture teeth, measured by a confocal scanning type microscope. A fourth study was designed to evaluate the load-bearing capacities of FRC FDPs using the findings of the previous three studies. In this case, the performance of pre-shaped acrylic resin denture teeth used as pontics with different composite resins as filling materials was evaluated. The filling material influenced the load-bearing capacities, providing more durable FRC FDPs. It can be concluded that the mechanical and physical properties of FRC FDPs can be improved as has been shown in the development of this thesis. The improvements reported then might provide long lasting prosthetic solutions of this kind, positioning them as potentially permanent rehabilitation treatments. Fatias de manga fresca e osmoticamente desidratadas foram acondicionadas em bandejas de poliestireno expandido, recobertas com filme de polietileno de baixa densidade (PEBD) e estocadas à temperatura de 5 °C com o objetivo de verificar o efeito da desidratação osmótica e da embalagem com atmosfera modificada passiva na vida útil das frutas. Amostras de manga fresca, acondicionadas nas condições do ar atmosférico, foram utilizadas como controle. As mangas foram avaliadas periodicamente quanto às suas características físico-químicas e microbiológicas, composição da atmosfera interna das embalagens, perda de peso e aceitação sensorial. O processo de desidratação osmótica e o acondicionamento das frutas com atmosfera modificada influíram positivamente na manutenção das características sensoriais e na qualidade microbiológica das fatias de manga. As fatias de manga fresca acondicionadas nas condições do ar atmosférico (FR AR) e com atmosfera modificada (FR MAP) apresentaram uma vida útil de apenas 8 e 14 dias, respectivamente, sendo limitada principalmente por sua aceitação sensorial e contaminação microbiológica. Já as frutas desidratadas osmoticamente e embaladas com atmosfera modificada (OD MAP) apresentaram uma vida útil de 18 dias com boa aceitação sensorial durante toda a estocagem.

Anthocyanins are the pigments responsible for the color of most red grapes and are easily degraded following various reaction mechanisms affected by oxygen, enzymes, pH, and temperature among other variables. In this study, a jam model system was developed using Merlot and Bordô grape extracts and polysaccharides (xanthan and locust bean gums) and different temperatures (45, 55 and 65 °C). The stability of the anthocyanin pigments and the rheological behavior of the jam model system were studied. For the determination of the stability, the half-life time and first-order reaction rate constants for the anthocyanin pigments were calculated. The rheological behavior was determined through the Power law model. The jam model system produced using a temperature of 45 °C showed the best results for the anthocyanin half-life time. The first-order reaction rate constants for the 45, 55, and 65 °C treatments were not significantly different among each other (p > 0.05). It was observed that with an increase in the jam model system temperature there was an increase in the index of consistency.

Viticultural practices in the State of Santa Catarina, Brazil, have shown economic growth, with the production of grapes used to produce wines and grape juice. Grapes are rich in phenolic compounds which have drawn attention not only because of their important role in the development of products derived from grapes, but also for their potential beneficial health effects. The objective of this study was to evaluate commercial, organic and homemade grape juices produced in Santa Catarina. Grape juices were analyzed for total phenolic content, colour, and antioxidant activity. The commercial juices had the highest average values for total monomeric anthocyanins and total phenolics. There was a strong positive correlation (R = 0.9566) between the antioxidant activity and total phenolic content for the commercial juice. In addition, the Principle Components Analysis showed a strong positive correlation between the red colour and total monomeric anthocyanins. However, the total monomeric anthocyanis and polymeric anthocyanins showed a negative correlation.

Sixteen common bean cultivars were compared concerning the physicochemical characteristics of their raw seeds in the course of two consecutive harvests, as well as the effect of storage conditions on starch and dietary fiber content of cooked beans. Using cluster analysis it was possible to identify groups of cultivars with different nutritional features. Bean cultivars were categorized into four different groups according either to their macronutrient content (crude protein-PROT, total dietary fiber-TDF, insoluble dietary fiber-IDF, soluble dietary fiber-SDF, digestible starch-DS, and resistant starch-RS) or to their micronutrient levels (Fe, Zn, Mn, Cu, Ca, Mg, and P). Guateian 6662 and Rio Tibagi appeared to be the most suitable cultivars to prevent nutritional deficiencies, because they had high PROT, DS, Fe, and Zn content. The high total dietary fiber and RS content of Iraí, Minuano, and TPS Bonito cultivars, and specially the high soluble fiber content of Guateian 6662 and Rio Tibagi cultivars suggests that they could have a beneficial role in controlling blood lipid and glucose levels. Cooked beans had a decrease in DS and an increase in RS content after storage (4 °C or -20 °C), but these changes were more prominent in beans that had low RS content before cooking than in those of high RS content. TDF, IDF, and SDF did not change after storage.

The demand for low-fat beef products has led the food industry to use fat substitutes such as modified starch. About 14% of broken rice is generated during processing. Nevertheless, this by-product contains high levels of starch; being therefore, great raw material for fat substitution. This study evaluated the applicability of chemically and physically modified broken rice starch as fat substitute in sausages. Extruded and phosphorylated broken rice was used in low-fat sausage formulation. All low-fat sausages presented about 55% reduction in the fat content and around 28% reduction in the total caloric value. Fat replacement with phosphorylated and extruded broken rice starch increased the texture acceptability of low-fat sausages, when compared to low-fat sausages with no modified broken rice. Results suggest that modified broken rice can be used as fat substitute in sausage formulations, yielding lower caloric value products with acceptable sensory characteristics.

This study aims to optimize an alternative method of extraction of carrageenan without previous alkaline treatment and ethanol precipitation using Response Surface Methodology (RSM). In order to introduce an innovation in the isolation step, atomization drying was used reducing the time for obtaining dry carrageenan powder. The effects of extraction time and temperature on yield, gel strength, and viscosity were evaluated. Furthermore, the extracted material was submitted to structural analysis, by infrared spectroscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (¹H-NMR), and chemical composition analysis. Results showed that the generated regression models adequately explained the data variation. Carrageenan yield and gel viscosity were influenced only by the extraction temperature. However, gel strength was influenced by both, extraction time and extraction temperature. Optimal extraction conditions were 74 ºC and 4 hours. In these conditions, the carrageenan extract properties determined by the polynomial model were 31.17%, 158.27 g.cm-2, and 29.5 cP for yield, gel strength, and viscosity, respectively, while under the experimental conditions they were 35.8 ± 4.68%, 112.50 ± 4.96 g.cm-2, and 16.01 ± 1.03 cP, respectively. The chemical composition, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, and infrared spectroscopy analyses showed that the crude carrageenan extracted is composed mainly of κ-carrageenan.

INTRODUÇÃO: Este artigo enfoca um dos objetivos de um estudo mais amplo sobre a realização de diálise peritoneal (DP) em crianças e adolescentes no domicílio. Descreve e discute os relatos dos cuidadores sobre as reações e dificuldades vivenciadas pela família e pela criança/adolescente com doença renal crônica (DRC) para a realização da DP. MÉTODO: Realizou-se no período de março de 2004 a maio de 2006 estudo descritivo constituído de um universo de 30 crianças e adolescentes portadores de DRC, assistidos pelo HC/UFMG, abordando questões relativas às dificuldades dos cuidadores quanto à aplicação da técnica de DP e as queixas das crianças/adolescentes quanto à DP por meio de entrevista, acompanhamento de consulta de rotina e visita domiciliar. RESULTADOS: As principais queixas foram: limitações que a diálise traz para a vida do paciente e do cuidador e aquelas relativas à diálise peritoneal em si. CONCLUSÃO: O conhecimento da realidade vivenciada pela criança/adolescente com DRC e pela família pode subsidiar ações e medidas a fim de melhorar a qualidade de vida dos envolvidos e contribuir para o sucesso da técnica dialítica.

INTRODUÇÃO: A partir da vivência no atendimento de crianças/adolescentes portadores de doença renal crônica (DRC) em tratamento dialítico no ambiente hospitalar pensou-se que aspectos seriam relevantes para a aplicação da diálise peritoneal domiciliar. O objetivo deste estudo foi descrever o nível de escolaridade e de informação do cuidador sobre a técnica de diálise peritoneal (DP), a renda familiar e condições gerais do local de realização da diálise e buscar associação com a realização inadequada da técnica. MÉTODO: Trata-se de um estudo descritivo do universo de 30 crianças e adolescentes com DRC assistidos pelo HC/UFMG no período de março de 2004 a maio de 2006. Os dados foram analisados utilizando-se o software SPSS versão 13.0. As seguintes variáveis foram testadas como possíveis fatores de risco para inadequação da técnica de diálise: escolaridade do cuidador, renda familiar, nível de informação do cuidador sobre a técnica de diálise, antissepsia das mãos, ausência de pia no quarto da diálise. RESULTADOS: A qualidade de aplicação da técnica de DP foi considerada inadequada em 18 (60%) pacientes. Todos os valores de Odds Ratio estiveram dentro dos limites dos intervalos de confiança (95%) e foram > 1, indicando a possibilidade de associação positiva entre a variável independente e a variável pesquisada, embora sem diferença estatística significativa. CONCLUSÕES: A análise estatística não mostrou associação entre as variáveis, entretanto acredita-se que elas exercem um papel positivo para o sucesso da aplicação da técnica dialítica.

INTRODUÇÃO: Investigou-se um universo de 30 crianças e adolescentes portadores de doença renal crônica em tratamento dialítico, assistidos pelo Hospital das Clínicas da UFMG, a fim de determinar fatores de risco para a frequência de peritonites e de internações. MÉTODO: Estudo descritivo em que para a obtenção dos resultados utilizou-se o software SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Science) versão 13.0. Testaram-se as variáveis: baixa escolaridade, baixa renda familiar, nível de informação inadequado, inadequação da antissepsia das mãos para a realização da diálise, ausência de pia no quarto da diálise como fator de risco para maior frequência de peritonites e internações. RESULTADOS: Os valores de Odds Ratio estiveram dentro dos limites dos intervalos de confiança (95%) e em alguns casos foram < 1, indicando a possibilidade de associação negativa entre algumas variáveis independentes e as variáveis pesquisadas, embora sem diferença estatística significativa. CONCLUSÃO: Não foi detectada significância estatística para as variáveis testadas, embora haja uma tendência para a sua ocorrência.
