An ideal of osmotic equilibrium between an ideal solution and pure solvent separated by a semi-permeable membrane is studied numerically using the method of molecular dynamics. The osmotic flow is observed as the inflow of the solvent across the membrane from the dilute to the concentrated side. The validity of van't Hoff's law for osmotic pressure is confirmed over a wide range of concentrations. It is found that the law is established by a balance between non-uniform partial pressures of solute and solvent. Furthermore, the present model permits an understanding of the mechanism of the osmotic flow in the relaxation process as the liquids evolve from the initial state to the equilibrium state. We focus in particular on the interaction between solute and solvent. ©2008 The Physical Society of Japan.

Lipidome profile of fluids and tissues is a growing field as the role of lipids as signaling molecules is increasingly understood, relying on an effective and representative extraction of the lipids present. A number of solvent systems suitable for lipid extraction are commonly in use, though no comprehensive investigation of their effectiveness across multiple lipid classes has been carried out. To address this, human LDL from normolipidemic volunteers was used to evaluate five different solvent extraction protocols [Folch, Bligh and Dyer, acidified Bligh and Dyer, methanol (MeOH)-tert-butyl methyl ether (TBME), and hexane-isopropanol] and the extracted lipids were analyzed by LC-MS in a high-resolution instrument equipped with polarity switching. Overall, more than 350 different lipid species from 19 lipid subclasses were identified. Solvent composition had a small effect on the extraction of predominant lipid classes (triacylglycerides, cholesterol esters, and phosphatidylcholines). In contrast, extraction of less abundant lipids (phosphatidylinositols, lyso-lipids, ceramides, and cholesterol sulfates) was greatly influenced by the solvent system used. Overall, the Folch method was most effective for the extraction of a broad range of lipid classes in LDL, although the hexane-isopropanol method was best for apolar lipids and the MeOH-TBME method was suitable for lactosyl ceramides. Isotropic scattering Raman spectra of liquid acetonitrile (AN) solutions of LiBF4 and NaI at various temperatures and concentrations have been investigated. For the first time imaginary as well as real parts of the solvent vibrational correlation functions have been extracted from the spectra. Such imaginary parts are currently an important component of modern theories of vibrational relaxation in liquids. This investigation thus provides the first experimental data on imaginary parts of a correlation function in AN solutions. Using the fitting algorithm we recently developed, statistically confident models for the Raman spectra were deduced. The parameters of the band shapes, with an additional correction, of the ν2 AN vibration (CN stretching), together with their confidence intervals are also reported for the first time. It is shown that three distinct species, with lifetimes greater than ∼10−13 s, of the AN molecules can be detected in solutions containing Li+ and Na+. These species are attributed to AN molecules directly solvating cations; the single oriented and polarised molecules interleaving the cation and anion of a Solvent Shared Ion Pair (SShIP); and molecules solvating anions. These last are considered to be equivalent to the next layer of solvent molecules, because the CN end of the molecule is distant from the anion and thus less affected by the ionic charge compared with the anion situation. Calculations showed that at the concentrations employed, 1 and 0.3 M, there were essentially no other solvent molecules remaining that could be considered as bulk solvent. Calculations also showed that the internuclear distance in these solutions supported the proposal that the ionic entity dominating in solution was the SShIP, and other evidence was adduced that confirmed the absence of Contact Ion Pairs at these concentrations. The parameters of the shape of the vibrational correlation functions of all three species are reported. The parameters of intramolecular anharmonic coupling between the potential surfaces in AN and the dynamics of the intermolecular environment fluctuations and intermolecular energy transfer are presented. These results will assist investigations made at higher and lower concentrations, when additional species and interactions with AN molecules will be present.

We consider the effects of salt (sodium iodide) on pristine carbon nanotube (CNT) dispersions in an organic solvent, N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP). We investigate the molecular-scale mechanisms of ion interactions with the nanotube surface and we show how the microscopic ion-surface interactions affect the stability of CNT dispersions in NMP. In our study we use a combination of fully atomistic Molecular Dynamics simulations of sodium and iodide ions at the CNT-NMP interface with direct experiments on the CNT dispersions. In the experiments we analyze the effects of salt on the stability of the dispersions by photoluminescence (PL) and optical absorption spectroscopy of the samples as well as by visual inspection. By fully atomistic Molecular Dynamics simulations we investigate the molecular-scale mechanisms of sodium and iodide ion interactions with the nanotube surface. Our simulations reveal that both ions are depleted from the CNT surface in the CNT-NMP dispersions mainly due to the two reasons: (1) there is a high energy penalty for the ion partial desolvation at the CNT surface; (2) NMP molecules form a dense solvation layer at the CNT surface that prevents ions to come close to the CNT surface. As a result, an increase of the salt concentration increases the "osmotic" stress in the CNT-NMP system and, thus, decreases the stability of the CNT dispersions in NMP. Direct experiments confirm the simulation results: addition of NaI salt into the NMP dispersions of pristine CNTs leads to precipitation of CNTs (bundle formation) even at very small salt concentration (∼10 -3 mol L -1). In line with the simulation predictions, the effect increases with the increase of the salt concentration. Overall, our results show that dissolved salt ions have strong effects on the stability of CNT dispersions. Therefore, it is possible to stimulate the bundle formation in the CNT-NMP dispersions and regulate the overall concentration of nanotubes in the dispersions by changing the NaI concentration in the solvent. © 2012 The Royal Society of Chemistry.

We report an in-fiber laser mode locker based on carbon nanotube with n-methyl-2-pryrrolidone solvent filled in-fiber microchamber. Symmetrically femtosecond laser fabricated in-fiber microchamber with randomly oriented nanotubes assures polarization insensitive oscillation of laser mode locking. The proposed and demonstrated passively mode locked fiber laser shows higher energy soliton output. The laser has an output power of ∼29 mW (corresponding to 11 nJ energy). It shows stable soliton output with a repetition rate of ∼2.3 MHz and pulse width of ∼3.37 ps. © 2012 American Institute of Physics.

This study attempted to determine if an excessive amount of 1,1,1 - Trichloroethane was released into the air, the acute effects of exposure and the cause(s) of excessive use. The types of degreasing equipments which were tested in this study are straight vapor and the vapor spray machines. The instruments utilized to obtain the data for this study are Gastech Haline Detector, Organic Vapor Monitor Badge and Personal Sampling Pump. Readings were taken on three different tanks. The data accumulated by this study were obtained during actual cleaning operation. During testing, increased exposure was detected due to exceeding the rate of removal, downward drafts were blowing right over the top of a degreaser and, in some cases, poor general ventilation caused solvent vapor to be blown out of the tank and into the workers' breathing zone, affecting excessive vapor drag out and solvent loss. The results show that, since the characteristics of solvent 1,1,1 - Trichloroethane are well suited to vapor degreasing requirements, by using proper procedures and maintenance, 1,1,1 - Trichloroethane emission during vapor degreasing can be controlled at levels well below the industrial hygiene standard established by OSHA for safe and healthful conditions.

The nanometer range structure produced by thin films of diblock copolymers makes them a great of interest as templates for the microelectronics industry. We investigated the effect of annealing solvents and/or mixture of the solvents in case of symmetric Poly (styrene-block-4vinylpyridine) (PS-b-P4VP) diblock copolymer to get the desired line patterns. In this paper, we used different molecular weights PS-b-P4VP to demonstrate the scalability of such high χ BCP system which requires precise fine-tuning of interfacial energies achieved by surface treatment and that improves the wetting property, ordering, and minimizes defect densities. Bare Silicon Substrates were also modified with polystyrene brush and ethylene glycol self-assembled monolayer in a simple quick reproducible way. Also, a novel and simple in situ hard mask technique was used to generate sub-7nm Iron oxide nanowires with a high aspect ratio on Silicon substrate, which can be used to develop silicon nanowires post pattern transfer.

Emulsion-based, resonant infrared matrix-assisted pulsed laser evaporation (RIR-MAPLE) has been demonstrated as an alternative technique to deposit conjugated polymer films for photovoltaic applications; yet, a fundamental understanding of how the emulsion target characteristics translate into film properties and solar cell performance is unclear. Such understanding is crucial to enable the rational improvement of organic solar cell (OSC) efficiency and to realize the expected advantages of emulsion-based RIR-MAPLE for OSC fabrication. In this paper, the effect of the primary solvent used in the emulsion target is studied, both experimentally and theoretically, and it is found to determine the conjugated polymer cluster size in the emulsion as well as surface roughness and internal morphology of resulting polymer films. By using a primary solvent with low solubility-in-water and low vapor pressure, the surface roughness of deposited P3HT and PCPDTBT polymer films was reduced to 10 nm, and the efficiency of P3HT:PC61BM OSCs was increased to 3.2% (∼100 times higher compared to the first MAPLE OSC demonstration [ Caricato , A. P. ; Appl. Phys. Lett. 2012 , 100 , 073306 ]). This work unveils the mechanism of polymer film formation using emulsion-based RIR-MAPLE and provides insight and direction to determine the best ways to take advantage of the emulsion target approach to control film properties for different applications.

Fabrication of nanoscale patterns through the bottom-up approach of self-assembly of phase-separated block copolymers (BCP) holds promise for nanoelectronics applications. For lithographic applications, it is useful to vary the morphology of BCPs by monitoring various parameters to make “from lab to fab” a reality. Here I report on the solvent annealing studies of lamellae forming polystyrene-blockpoly( 4-vinylpyridine) (PS-b-P4VP). The high Flory-Huggins parameter (χ = 0.34) of PS-b-P4VP makes it an ideal BCP system for self-assembly and template fabrication in comparison to other BCPs. Different molecular weights of symmetric PS-b-P4VP BCPs forming lamellae patterns were used to produce nanostructured thin films by spin-coating from mixture of toluene and tetrahydrofuran(THF). In particular, the morphology change from micellar structures to well-defined microphase separated arrangements is observed. Solvent annealing provides a better alternative to thermal treatment which often requires long annealing periods. The choice of solvent (single and dual solvent exposure) and the solvent annealing conditions have significant effects on the morphology of films and it was found that a block neutral solvent was required to realize vertically aligned PS and P4VP lamellae. Here, we have followed the formation of microdomain structures with time development at different temperatures by atomic force microscopy (AFM). The highly mobilized chains phase separate quickly due to high Flory-Huggins (χ) parameter. Ultra-small feature size (~10 nm pitch size) nanopatterns were fabricated by using low molecular weight PSb- P4VP (PS and P4VP blocks of 3.3 and 3.1 kg mol-1 respectively). However, due to the low etch contrast between the blocks, pattern transfer of the BCP mask is very challenging. To overcome the etch contrast problem, a novel and simple in-situ hard mask technology is used to fabricate the high aspect ratio silicon nanowires. The lamellar structures formed after self-assembly of phase separated PS-b-P4VP BCPs were used to fabricate iron oxide nanowires which acted as hard mask material to facilitate the pattern transfer into silicon and forming silicon nanostructures. The semiconductor and optical industries have shown significant interest in two dimensional (2D) molybdenum disulphide (MoS2) as a potential device material due to its low band gap and high mobility. However, current methods for its synthesis are not ‘fab’ friendly and require harsh environments and processes. Here, I also report a novel method to prepare MoS2 layered structures via self-assembly of a PS-b-P4VP block copolymer system. The formation of the layered MoS2 was confirmed by XPS, Raman spectroscopy and high resolution transmission electron microscopy.

The Li-O2 battery may theoretically possess practical gravimetric energy densities several times greater than the current state-of-the-art Li-ion batteries.1 This magnitude of development is a requisite for true realization of electric vehicles capable of competing with the traditional combustion engine. However, significant challenges must be addressed before practical application may be considered. These include low efficiencies, low rate capabilities and the parasitic decomposition reactions of electrolyte/electrode materials resulting in very poor rechargeability.2-4 Ionic liquids, ILs, typically display several properties, extremely low vapor pressure and high electrochemical and thermal stability, which make them particularly interesting for Li-O2 battery electrolytes. However, the typically sluggish transport properties generally inhibit rate performance and cells suffer similar inefficiencies during cycling.5,6

In addition to the design of new ILs with tailored properties, formulating blended electrolytes using molecular solvents with ILs has been considered to improve their performance.7,8 In this work, we will discuss the physical properties vs. the electrochemical performance of a range of formulated electrolytes based on tetraglyme, a benchmark Li-O2 battery electrolyte solvent, and several ILs. The selected ILs are based on the bis{(trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl}imide anion and alkyl/ether functionalized cyclic alkylammonium cations, which exhibit very good stability and moderate viscosity.9 O2 electrochemistry will be investigated in these media using macro and microdisk voltammetry and O2 solubility/diffusivity is quantified as a function of the electrolyte formulation. Furthermore, galvanostatic cycling of selected electrolytes in Li-O2 cells will be discussed to probe their practical electrochemical performance. Finally, the physical characterization of the blended electrolytes will be reported in parallel to further determine structure (or formulation) vs. property relationships and to, therefore, assess the importance of certain electrolyte properties (viscosity, O2supply capability, donor number) on their performance.

Preparations of heterogeneous catalysts are usually complex processes that involve several procedures as precipitation, crystallization and hydrothermal treatments. This processes are really dependent by the operative conditions such as temperature, pH, concentration etc. Hence the resulting product is extremely affected by any possible variations in these parameters making this synthesis really fragile. With the aim to improve these operations has been decided to exploit a new possible strong environment-respectful process by mechanochemical treatment, which permits to carry out solvent free-solvent synthesis exploiting the Mixer Mill MM400 (Retsch) in order to have reproducible results. Two different systems have been studied in this kind of synthesis: a tin β -zeolite tested in a H-trasnfer reaction of cyclohexanone and a silver on titania catalyst used in the fluorination of 2,2 dimethyl glucaric acid. Each catalyst has been characterized by different techniques in order to understand the transformations involved in the mechanochemical treatment.
