Salivary gland cells of Drosophila mulleri/D. arizonensis aneuploid male hybrids carrying 3 microchromosomes exhibited morphological features which indicate heterochromatinization of one of the small polytene chromosomes. The process apparently changes the chromosome surface producing a coating with a net-like structure and a strong affinity for lacto-acetic orcein. The possibility of a dosage compensatory mechanism operating to counteract the effect of the extra chromosome is discussed on the basis of previous data which indicated that the microchromosomes of these species have ribosomal cistrons and are controlled by regulatory mechanisms especially evident in hybrids. © 1981 Dr W. Morphological and ultrastructural features of the paracloacal glands of Metachirus nudicaudatus are described. Two pairs of glands, one on the right and the other on the left of the anal canal, are formed, each consisting of a major and a minor portion. Their wall is made up of three layers: a mucosal, a muscular and an external capsule. The inner one is a mucosa the epithelium of which contains holocrine cells characterized by lipid droplets and intermediate filaments. The surrounding vascular lamina propria contains flattened tubular apocrine glands whose epithelial cells contain abundant endoplasmic reticulum, prominent Golgi complexes and numerous secretory granules. The middle layer is formed by skeletal striated muscle and the outer (third layer) consists of dense connective tissue. Each gland originates from a single duct. Transverse sections show that each duct, except in the female major gland, is in fact formed by a duct system. One of these ducts comes from the central cavity, lined by holocrine epithelium, and the others result from the branched tubular glands of the lamina propria.

Constrictotermes rupestris, new species, is described from central Brazil, with illustrations of the imago, soldier, worker head, worker mandibles, worker mandibular gland, and nest. The new species lives in a dry forest, on rocky terrain, building its nest always on rocks. In the colonies examined, all castes showed a striking reddish coloration due to something accumulated in the fat tissues. Inquilinitermes microcerus was present in most examined nests. The worker of C. rupestris has an enlarged mandibular gland. Workers also show an aggressive behavior, which suggests that the mandibular glands may produce defensive secretions.

The present study reports the localization of acid phosphatase in the hypopharyngeal gland cells from workers (newly-emerged, nurse and forager), queens (newly-emerged and laying) and males (newly-emerged and mature for mating) of the Brazilian stingless bee, Scaptotrigona postica. The phosphatase activity varied in intensity and localization depending on the individual class, physiological age and the substrate used. In newly-emerged workers, the phosphatase-positive sites suggest the involvement of the enzyme with cellular differentiation that occurs in the presecretory phase, in nurse workers with protein synthesis and in forager workers with changes in cellular activity or glandular regression. In males mature for mating and laying queens, the positive sites are related to secretory activity, showing that the gland maintains some activity in spite of the regressive aspect. Of the substrates used, β-glycerophosphate gave the least specific localization.

Experiments on the effect of topical application of the synthetic juvenile hormone (JH-III) and of the solvent used to dissolve the hormone on the development of the wax glands of workers of Apis mellifera, were made. The results show that it was impossible to determine the effect of the juvenile hormone (JH) apart from its solvent (acetone), which also alters the developmental pattern of the gland. Most of the experiments reported in scientific literature do not consider the effect of the solvent, analyzing the results by only comparing the treatment with the hormone plus solvent to a control without any treatment. The data presented suggests that this kind of procedure compromises the evaluation of the real JH effect.

In the present investigation we analyzed both histology and area of secretory cells from workers, virgin and physogastric queen mandibular glands of Melipona bicolor bicolor Lepeletier. The histological differences observed include the number of vacuoles present in the cell cytoplasm and the quantity and distribution of the secretion. The morphometry results demonstrated the occurrence of significative differences in the cell area values that were related to the secretory cell activity level, which is higher in the physogastric queens. Worker and queen glands have histological patterns quite similar, but the morphometric data indicated cast-specific differences, as well as differences between the queens, which were related to the posture activity.

The urethra is the main place of entry for sexually transmitted pathogens. However, there is little literature on the morphology of the urogenital system, principally the urethra and ducts of the sex accessory glands. The Mongolian gerbil is an insectivorous, herbivorous and monogamous rodent with nocturnal habits; it has been used successfully as a laboratory animal since the 1960s. Therefore, the objective of the present paper was to describe the structure and ultrastructure of the urethra and its relations to the ducts of the accessory sex glands of the Mongolian gerbil (Meriones unguiculatus), contributing to the understanding of the reproductive biology of the rodent and aiming to provide data for future experimental studies. Conventional techniques of light and scanning electron microscopy were utilized. The urethra and ducts of the accessory sex glands are similar to those of the albino rat and the mouse. However, there is variation in drainage type among accessory sex glands for the inner urethra. The ducts of the seminal vesicle, the ductus deferens, drain their contents independently into the ampullary duct that opens in the urethra. The ducts of the prostate, coagulating and bulbourethral glands drain their contents independently into the urethra.

Twelve-day-old and 25-day-old Apis mellifera workers were treated or not treated with juvenile hormone at the moment of emergence and reared in the colony without brood. Having the brood interference apart, the hormone effect on the hypopharyngeal glands protein expression was determined through the electrophoretical protein profiles of the both groups of bees. In those conditions, the hormone induced changes that were different from the control. Protein bands of 66 and 48 kDa were intensified in the 12-day-old bees, whereas band of 42 kDa was reduced in the 25-day-old bees. That indicated a different effect of the juvenile hormone in the function of bee aging, which promoted a glandular protein activation in the young bees and, in contrast, an inhibitory action in the 25-day-old bees workers.

The venom glands of worker ants of the species Ectatomma quadridens morphologically resemble an elongated sac or reservoir ending in a narrower portion that has the function of releasing the secretion to the exterior. Two external secretory filaments are individually inserted into the proximal portion of the gland and end inside the convoluted gland. The venom gland of workers of E. quadridens is, therefore, morphologically subdivided into four distinct portions: a) sac-shaped reservoir measuring approximately 1mm in length; b) excretory duct, proximal portion of the reservoir that joins the gland to the sting apparatus; c) convoluted gland, final portion of the external secretory filaments located inside the reservoir; and d) two secretory filaments measuring about 2 mm in length; their free extremities end blindly and are individually inserted into the reservoir wall at the proximal region of the venom gland. The histological data showed that the filaments and the convoluted gland are composed of cubic cells of secretory function. The reservoir consists of a simple cubical epithelium externally surrounded by muscle fibers. A thick cuticle internally coats the epithelium of the reservoir. The application of histochemical tests allowed us to establish that the final secretion of the venom gland of Ectatomma quadridens is of glycoproteic nature. This secretion undergoes several modifications at the secretory filaments, at the convoluted gland, and in the reservoir before reaching the excretory duct, the point at which the secretion is released in its final composition, namely the venom. Based on the differences among various Ponerinae species we propose a hypothesis suggesting a probable evolutionary process that the venom glands of members of this subfamily might have undergone.

Background: Cyclosporin (CsA) and tacrolimus (FK-506) are immunosuppressive drugs that specifically inhibit T-cell activation via calcineurin inhibition. Gingival overgrowth is a common side effect following the administration of CsA. The severity of gingival overgrowth seen in patients taking FK-506 is less than that observed with CsA. Little is known about the involvement of saliva in drug-induced gingival overgrowth. The purpose of this study was to investigate the salivary contents of tumor growth factor β1 (TGF-β1), epidermal growth factor (EGF), and interleukin-6 (IL-6) as well as the hystometry of gingival tissue obtained from rats treated with either FK-506 or CsA. Methods: For 30 or 60 days rats received daily subcutaneous injection doses of either CsA or FK-506 (10 mg/kg). The concentrations of TGF-β1, EGF, and IL-6 in saliva were determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, and after histological processing, the oral epithelium and connective tissue were assessed at the region of the lower first molars. Results: The levels of TGF-β1, EGF, and IL-6 in saliva were not significantly altered by any of the treatments after 30 days. After 60 days of treatment with CsA, gingival overgrowth and significant increase in salivary TGF-β1, EGF, and IL-6 concentrations were observed; no statistically significant changes were induced by FK-506. Conclusion: Within the limits of this experimental study, it can be concluded that CsA, but not FK-506, induced gingival overgrowth associated with an increase of the salivary levels of the cytokines TGF-β1, EGF, and IL-6.
