Species specific LTR retrotransposons were first cloned in five rare relic species of drug plants located in the Perm’ region. Sequences of LTR retrotransposons were used for PCR analysis based on amplification of repeated sequences from LTR or other sites of retrotransposons (IRAP). Genetic diversity was studied in six populations of rare relic species of plants Adonis vernalis L. by means of the IRAP method; 125 polymorphic IRAP markers were analyzed. Parameters for DNA polymorphism and genetic diversity of A. vernalis populations were determined.

We search for b→sμ+μ- transitions in B meson (B+, B0, or Bs0) decays with 924 pb-1 of pp̅ collisions at √s=1.96 TeV collected with the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. We find excesses with significances of 4.5, 2.9, and 2.4 standard deviations in the B+→μ+μ-K+, B0→μ+μ-K*(892)0, and Bs0→μ+μ-ϕ decay modes, respectively. Using B→J/ψh (h=K+, K*(892)0, ϕ) decays as normalization channels, we report branching fractions for the previously observed B+ and B0 decays, B(B+→μ+μ-K+)=(0.59±0.15±0.04)×10-6, and B(B0→μ+μ-K*(892)0)=(0.81±0.30±0.10)×10-6, where the first uncertainty is statistical, and the second is systematic. We set an upper limit on the relative branching fraction B(Bs0→μ+μ-ϕ)/B(Bs0→J/ψϕ)<2.6(2.3)×10-3 at the 95(90)% confidence level, which is the most stringent to date.

A study of compression waves produced in a viscous heat-conducting gas by the impulsive start of a one-dimensional piston and by the inpulsive change of piston wall temperature is made using Laplace Transform Technique for Prandt1 number unity. Expressions for velocity, temperature and density have also been obtained using small-time expansion procedure in this case. For arbitrary Prandt1 number solutions have been developed using large-time expansion procedure. A number of graphs exhibiting the distribution of the fluid velocity, temperature and density have been drawn.

We have found an exact similarity solution of the point explosion problem in the case when the total energy of the shock wave that is produced is not constant but decreases with time and when the loss due to radiation escape is significant. We have compared the results of our exact solution with those of exact numerical solutions of Elliot and Wang and have explained the cause why our solution differs from theirs in certain aspects.

Noble metal substituted ionic catalysts were synthesized by solution combustion technique. The compounds were characterized by X-ray diffraction, FT-Raman spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Zirconia supported compounds crystallized in tetragonal phase. The solid solutions of ceria with zirconia crystallized in fluorite structure. The noble metals were substituted in ionic form. The water-gas shift reaction was carried out over the catalysts.Negligible conversions were observed with unsubstituted compounds. The substitution of a noble metal ion was found to enhance the reaction rate. Equilibrium conversion was obtained below 250 degrees C in the presence of Pt ion substituted compounds. The formation of Bronsted acid-Bronsted base pairs was proposed to explain the activity of zirconia catalysts. The effect of oxide ion vacancies on the reactions over substituted ceria-zirconia solid solutions was established. (c)2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The study of steady-state flows in radiation-gas-dynamics, when radiation pressure is negligible in comparison with gas pressure, can be reduced to the study of a single first-order ordinary differential equation in particle velocity and radiation pressure. The class of steady flows, determined by the fact that the velocities in two uniform states are real, i.e. the Rankine-Hugoniot points are real, has been discussed in detail in a previous paper by one of us, when the Mach number M of the flow in one of the uniform states (at x=+∞) is greater than one and the flow direction is in the negative direction of the x-axis. In this paper we have discussed the case when M is less than or equal to one and the flow direction is still in the negative direction of the x-axis. We have drawn the various phase planes and the integral curves in each phase plane give various steady flows. We have also discussed the appearance of discontinuities in these flows.

The variation of gas amplification with applied voltage is an important characteristic of a proportional counter. Results of studies on gas amplification for gas fillings of argon quenched with ethane and carbon dioxide are given. The effects of (a) pressure, (b) quenching agent and (c) concentration on A are discussed briefly.

Electronic transport in the high temperature paramagnetic regime of the colossal magnetoresistive oxides, La(1-x)A(x)MnO(3), A=Ca, Sr, Ba, x similar or equal to 0.1-0.3, has been investigated using resistivity measurements. The main motivation for this work is to relook into the actual magnitude of the activation energy for transport in a number of manganites and study its variation as a function of hole doping (x), average A-site cation radius (< r(A)>), cationic disorder (sigma(2)) and strain (epsilon(zz)). We show that contrary to current practice, the description of a single activation energy in this phase is not entirely accurate. Our results clearly reveal a strong dependence of the activation energy on the hole doping as well as disorder. Comparing the results across different substituent species with different < r(A)> reveals the importance of sigma(2) as a metric to qualify any analysis based on (r(A)). (c) 2006 Elsevier Ltd. We examine the stability of hadron resonance gas models by extending them to include undiscovered resonances through the Hagedorn formula. We find that the influence of unknown resonances on thermodynamics is large but bounded. We model the decays of resonances and investigate the ratios of particle yields in heavy-ion collisions. We find that observables such as hydrodynamics and hadron yield ratios change little upon extending the model. As a result, heavy-ion collisions at the RHIC and LHC are insensitive to a possible exponential rise in the hadronic density of states, thus increasing the stability of the predictions of hadron resonance gas models in this context. Hadron resonance gases are internally consistent up to a temperature higher than the crossover temperature in QCD, but by examining quark number susceptibilities we find that their region of applicability ends below the QCD crossover.

Charge-order driven magnetic ferroelectricity is shown to occur in several rare earth manganates of the general formula, Ln(1-x)A(x)MnO(3) (In = rare earth, A = alkaline earth). Charge-ordered manganates exhibit dielectric constant anomalies around the charge-ordering or the antiferromagnetic transition temperature. Magnetic fields have a marked effect on the dielectric properties of these compounds, indicating the presence of coupling between the magnetic and electrical order parameters. Magneto-dielectric properties are retained in small particles of the manganates. The observation of magneto-ferroelectricity in these manganates is in accordance with theoretical predictions.

We present a study of the piezoresistivity in nanostructured. polycrystalline films of La0.67Ca0.33MnO3 and La0.67Sr0.33MnO3 grown on oxidized Si (100) substrates. We have observed that the hole doped rare-earth manganites, which are well known for being colossal magnetoresistive (CMR) show change in its resistance under uniaxial strain even at room temperature. The piezoresistance was measured at room temperature by bending the Si cantilevers (on which the film is grown) in flexural mode both with compressive and tensile strain. The resistance of the film increases with tensile strain and decreases with compressive strain. A large gauge factor of 15-20 is seen in these films at room temperature.

This paper describes the design and development of a thermoelectric gas sensor suitable for the detection of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs). In order to enhance the seebeck coefficient of the sensor, we have deposited chromium metal films on a limited area of the glass substrate. Tin oxide thin film was deposited on top of these metal films. The resulting metal/semiconductor film exhibits a high seebeck coefficient of 400 mu V/ degrees C. Platinum catalyst film deposited on the oxide film to create the necessary temperature gradient resulted in further enhancement in the sensitivity of the sensor to target gases. The sensor shows high sensitivity to ppm-change in the concentration of target hydrocarbons at a relatively low temperature of 120 degrees C.
