Adaptive recursive control of a soil testing load frame

Recursive Learning Control (RLC) has the potential to significantly reduce the tracking error in many repetitive trajectory applications. This paper presents an application of RLC to a soil testing load frame where non-adaptive techniques struggle with the highly nonlinear nature of soil. The main purpose of the controller is to apply a sinusoidal force reference trajectory on a soil sample with a high degree of accuracy and repeatability. The controller uses a feedforward control structure, recursive least squares adaptation algorithm and RLC to compensate for periodic errors. Tracking error is reduced and stability is maintained across various soil sample responses.

Padé approximants for the acoustical properties of rigid frame porous media with pore size distributions

Expressions for the viscosity correction function, and hence bulk complex impedance, density, compressibility, and propagation constant, are obtained for a rigid frame porous medium whose pores are prismatic with fixed cross-sectional shape, but of variable pore size distribution. The lowand high-frequency behavior of the viscosity correction function is derived for the particular case of a log-normal pore size distribution, in terms of coefficients which can, in general, be computed numerically, and are given here explicitly for the particular cases of pores of equilateral triangular, circular, and slitlike cross-section. Simple approximate formulae, based on two-point Pade´ approximants for the viscosity correction function are obtained, which avoid a requirement for numerical integration or evaluation of special functions, and their accuracy is illustrated and investigated for the three pore shapes already mentioned

Padé approximants for the acoustical characteristics of rigid frame porous media

In this paper it is shown that a number of theoretical models of the acoustical properties of rigid frame porous media, especially those involving ratios of Bessel functions of complex argument, can be accurately approximated and greatly simplified by the use of Padé approximation techniques. In the case of the model of Attenborough [J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 81, 93–102 (1987)] rational approximations are produced for the characteristic impedance, propagation constant, dynamic compressibility, and dynamic density, as a function of frequency and the material parameters. Optimal frame length for keeping normalized goodput with lowest requirement on BER

This paper presents an adaptive frame length mechanism based on a cross-layer analysis of intrinsic relations between the MAC frame length, bit error rate (BER) of the wireless link and normalized goodput. The proposed mechanism selects the optimal frame length that keeps the service normalized goodput at required levels while satisfying the lowest requirement on the BER, thus increasing the transmission reliability. Numerical results are provided and show that an optimal frame length satisfying the lowest BER requirement does indeed exist. The performance of BER requirement as a function of the MAC frame length is evaluated and compared for transmission scenarios with and without automatic repeat request (ARQ). Furthermore, issues related to the MAC overhead length are also discussed to illuminate the functionality and performance of the proposed mechanism.

Ablation of primary afferent neurons by neonatal capsaicin treatment reduces the susceptibility of the portal hypertensive gastric mucosa to ethanol-induced injury in cirrhotic rats

Primary sensory afferent neurons modulate the hyperdynamic circulation in Cirrhotic rats with portal hypertension.The stomach of cirrhotic rats is prone to damage induced by ethanol, a phenomenon associated with reduced gastric hyperemic response to acid-back diffusion. The aim of this study was to examine the impact of ablation of capsaicin-sensitive neurons and the tachykinin NK(1) receptor antagonist A5330 on the susceptibility of the portal hypertensive gastric mucosa, to ethanol-induced injury and its effects on gastric cyclooxygenase (COX) and nitric oxide synthase (NOS) mRNA expression. Capsaicin was administered to neonatal, male, Wistar rats and the animals were allowed to grow. Cirrhosis was then induced by bile duct ligation in adult rats while controls had sham operation. Ethanol-induced gastric damage was assessed using ex vivo gastric chamber experiments. Gastric blood flow was measured as well as COX/NOS mRNA expression. Topical application of ethanol produced significant gastric damage in cirrhotic rats compared to controls, which was reversed in capsaicin- and A5330-treated animals. Mean arterial and portal pressure was normalized in capsaicin-treated cirrhotic rats. Capsaicin and A5330 administration restored gastric blood flow responses to topical application of ethanol followed by acid in cirrhotic rats. Differential COX and NOS mRNA expression was noted in bile duct ligated rats relative to controls. Capsaicin treatment significantly modified gastric eNOS/iNOS/COX-2 mRNA expression in cirrhotic rats. Capsaicin-sensitive neurons modulate the susceptibility of the portal hypertensive gastric mucosa to injury induced by ethanol via tachykinin NK(1) receptors and signalling of prostaglandin and NO production/release. QUANTUM HALL FERROMAGNET IN A DOUBLE WELL WITH VANISHING g-FACTOR.

We have studied the quantum Hall effect in Al(x)Ga(1-x)As-double well structure with vanishing g-factor. We determined the density-magnetic field n(s) - B diagrams for the longitudinal resistance R(xx). In spite of the fact that the n(s) - B diagram for conventional GaAs double wells shows a striking similarity with the theory, we observed the strong difference between these diagrams for double wells with vanishing g-factor. We argue that the electron-electron interaction is responsible for unusual behavior of the Landau levels in such a system.

MAGNETORESISTANCE OSCILLATIONS IN DOUBLE QUANTUM WELLS UNDER MICROWAVE IRRADIATION

We report in detail oscillatory magnetoresistance in double quantum wells under microwave irradiation. The experimental investigation contains measurements of frequency, power and temperature dependence. In theory, the observed interference oscillations are explained in terms of the influence of subband coupling on the frequency-dependent photoinduced part of the electron distribution function. Thus, the magnetoresistance shows the interference of magneto-intersubband and conventional microwave induced resistance oscillations.

VALLEY SPLITTING AND g-FACTOR IN AlAs QUANTUM WELLS

Here we present the results of magneto resistance measurements in tilted magnetic field and compare them with calculations. The comparison between calculated and measured spectra for the case of perpendicular fields enable us to estimate the dependence of the valley splitting as a function of the magnetic field and the total Lande g-factor (which is assumed to be independent of the magnetic field). Since both the exchange contribution to the Zeeman splitting as well as the valley splitting are properties associated with the 2D quantum confinement, they depend only on the perpendicular component of the magnetic field, while the bare Zeeman splitting depends on the total magnetic field. This information aided by the comparison between experimental and calculated gray scale maps permits to obtain separately the values of the exchange and the bare contribution to the g-factor.

Conservation laws and tachyon potentials in the sliver frame

Conservation laws have provided an elegant and efficient tool to evaluate the open string field theory interaction vertex, they have been originally implemented in the case where the string field is expanded in the Virasoro basis. In this work we derive conservation laws in the case where the string field is expanded in the so-called sliver L(0)-basis. As an application of this new set of conservation laws, we compute the open string field action relevant to the tachyon condensation and in order to present not only an illustration but also an additional information, we evaluate the action without imposing a gauge choice.

VSImG: A high frame rate bitmap based display system for neuroscience research

This paper describes a visual stimulus generator (VSImG) capable of displaying a gray-scale, 256 x 256 x 8 bitmap image with a frame rate of 500 Hz using a boustrophedonic scanning technique. It is designed for experiments with motion-sensitive neurons of the fly`s visual system, where the flicker fusion frequency of the photoreceptors can reach up to 500 Hz. Devices with such a high frame rate are not commercially available, but are required, if sensory systems with high flicker fusion frequency are to be studied. The implemented hardware approach gives us complete real-time control of the displacement sequence and provides all the signals needed to drive an electrostatic deflection display. With the use of analog signals, very small high-resolution displacements, not limited by the image`s pixel size can be obtained. Very slow image displacements with visually imperceptible steps can also be generated. This can be of interest for other vision research experiments. Two different stimulus files can be used simultaneously, allowing the system to generate X-Y displacements on one display or independent movements on two displays as long as they share the same bitmap image. Transcriptome analysis of Taenia solium cysticerci using Open Reading Frame ESTs (ORESTES)

Background: Human infection by the pork tapeworm Taenia solium affects more than 50 million people worldwide, particularly in underdeveloped and developing countries. Cysticercosis which arises from larval encystation can be life threatening and difficult to treat. Here, we investigate for the first time the transcriptome of the clinically relevant cysticerci larval form. Results: Using Expressed Sequence Tags (ESTs) produced by the ORESTES method, a total of 1,520 high quality ESTs were generated from 20 ORESTES cDNA mini-libraries and its analysis revealed fragments of genes with promising applications including 51 ESTs matching antigens previously described in other species, as well as 113 sequences representing proteins with potential extracellular localization, with obvious applications for immune-diagnosis or vaccine development. Conclusion: The set of sequences described here will contribute to deciphering the expression profile of this important parasite and will be informative for the genome assembly and annotation, as well as for studies of intra- and inter-specific sequence variability. Genes of interest for developing new diagnostic and therapeutic tools are described and discussed.

GIS-portal - Utredning och design av GIS-portal ochingående tjänst åt Vägverket

Denna rapport presenterar ett examensarbete på D-nivå där uppdragsgivaren har varit WM-data Consulting och kunden Vägverket Produktion.Vägverket har ett antal olika applikationer för geografisk information som ligger utspridda på företagets hemsida . För att samla alla applikationer på ett och samma ställe fick vi i uppdrag att göra en grundläggande utredning av en GIS-portal. Denna portal ska fungera som en enhetlig ingång där kartdata samkörs och visualiseras. Ytterligare en del i uppdraget var att utreda vad som borde förändras och förbättras i den redan existerande tjänsten Beläggning på vägarna. Denna tjänst kommer att fungera som en testapplikation för GIS-portalen.Målen med examensarbetet var att utreda vilka krav som finns på en GIS-portal och applikationen Beläggning på vägarna samt att beskriva de önskemål som finns på dessa. Ett designförslag och en funktionsbeskrivning arbetades fram för både tjänsten Beläggning på vägarna och för GIS-portalen. Utredningen kommer att ligga till grund för utveckling av en GIS-portal samt fortsatt utveckling och förbättringar av tjänsten Beläggning på vägarna.För att komma fram till ett resultat har vi använt oss av ett antal teorier om IT-tjänster, systemarkitektur och användbarhet. Förutom dessa teorier har även de intervjuer som utförts spelat en stor roll för vårt arbete. Vi har lagt en bra grund för Vägverket att fortsätta arbetet med utveckling av en GIS-portal och tjänsten Beläggning på vägarna.

Janet Frame : uma escritora de ficção e a ficção de uma escritora : os múltiplos processos da autobiografia estética

A escritora objeto desta tese, figura proeminente da literatura neozelandesa, voltou-se ao gênero autobiográfico após um longo percurso na área da ficção, para definir-se como uma primeira pessoa, depois de sua vida particular ter sido insistentemente confundida com sua obra por parte da crítica. Uma questão que logo vem à tona é que praticamente toda ficção resulta ser, até um certo grau, fundamentalmente autobiográfica e que a análise crítica da obra de um escritor possibilita o conhecimento de sua vida. Nosso argumento, opondo-se a esse pressuposto, parte da vida para melhor compreender a obra, evidenciando que Janet Frame manteve um grande distanciamento entre os eventos reais e sua ficcionalização, realizando uma tarefa que a coloca lado a lado dos nomes mais ilustres da literatura ocidental do século XX. Numa atitude comparatista, procuramos extrair os diversos processos de transmutação estética realizados pela escritora, buscando sanar algumas distorções que impediram uma análise mais confiável de sua obra, problematizando, entre outros aspectos, a questão do gênero autobiográfico, da mímese e do realismo ficcional. A manipulação artística da vida particular de Janet Frame foi resgatada por um conjunto de processos, entre os quais a antimímese, a poetização do quotidiano, a intertextualidade e a interdiscursividade, que revelam um alcance estético e uma auto-referencialidade deslocada muito além do mero biografismo. Outros aspectos analisados na obra como um todo indicam que novas abordagens da ficção de Janet Frame, a partir de enfoques pós-modernos, pós-coloniais, pós-estruturalistas e feministas podem superar as posturas reducionistas das quais ela foi alvo.

Atributos favoráveis à motivação para visitação de um site : estudo de um portal educacional

Esta pesquisa tem como foco principal os atributos favoráveis à motivação de uso de um site, especificamente um portal educacional. Concentra-se no levantamento de atributos usuais para a construção de sites na Internet, sendo primeiramente levantados em bibliografias e, paralelamente, junto a profissionais responsáveis pela construção de um portal educacional para o mercado brasileiro. Com a definição dos atributos mais importantes, buscou-se a constatação de seu uso em três portais educacionais, dois deles concorrentes ao portal estudado, por meio do uso da ferramenta de benchmarking. Com os dados sobre os atributos, partiu-se para a fase de avaliação de tais atributos com usuários finais de um portal educacional, para a verificação se tais atributos eram relevantes na busca e uso de tal site. A pesquisa concentrou-se em um grupo fechado de respondentes, por serem efetivos usuários do portal educacional e poderem, com suas respostas, colaborar de forma significativa para o avanço da pesquisa. Os resultados obtidos revelam importantes considerações sobre a construção de sites – especificamente portais educacionais – mas por serem atributos gerais podem formar uma base para analise de outros sites em construção.

Controle social: um novo frame nos movimentos sociais

No contexto pós redemocratização, Estado e sociedade civil estão em transformação: discute-se novos modelos de gestão pública, mais descentralizados e gerenciais; enquanto proliferam as organizações sem fins lucrativos abrindo novos espaços também para a participação dos empresários nas decisões sobre os rumos do país. A accountability governamental entra na pauta e o controle social surge nas falas de movimentos sociais que chamam atenção pela diversidade de seus membros e pelas mudanças que vem provocando na institucionalidade vigente. Uma referencia destes movimentos é o Nossa São Paulo, articulador de mais de seiscentas organizações na segunda maior cidade do mundo e modelo organizacional e político para dezenas de iniciativas similares que se disseminam pelo país e pela America Latina. O objetivo desta pesquisa é compreender o lugar do controle social, e mais amplamente, da accountability governamental no processo de framing desenvolvido pelo Movimento Nossa São Paulo. Para tanto, realizou-se um estudo de caso exploratório, incluindo revisão da literatura, análise de documentos, observação em eventos e entrevistas em profundidade, focando nos momentos de gênese e mobilização do Movimento Nossa São Paulo e na articulação para a aprovação de legislação relacionada à accountability governamental. Este trabalho apresenta, assim, o percurso dos grupos que formam o Nossa São Paulo observando o surgimento do controle social como quadro interpretativo composto pela união entre movimentos historicamente vinculados pelo mote da justiça social e outros grupos ligados ao desenvolvimento urbano e à responsabilidade socioambiental, articulados no pleito pela sustentabilidade. Como pano de fundo, estão as discussões sobre o direito à cidade, os dilemas clássicos da representação e os novos caminhos no campo dos modelos democráticos.
