Endostatin (ES) is a potent inhibitor of angiogenesis and tumor growth. Continuous ES delivery of ES improves the efficacy and potency of the antitumoral therapy. The TheraCyte (R) system is a polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) semipermeable membrane macroencapsulation system for implantation of genetically engineered cells specially designed for the in vivo delivery of therapeutic proteins, such as ES, which circumvents the problem of limited half-life and variation in circulating levels. In order to enable neovascularization at the tissues adjacent to the devices prior to ES secretion by the cells inside them, we designed a scheme in which empty TheraCyte (R) devices were preimplanted SC into immunodeficient mice. Only after healing (17 days later) were Chinese hamster ovary cells expressing ES injected into the preimplanted devices. In another model for device implantation, the cells expressing ES where loaded into the immunoisolation devices prior to implantation into the animals, and the TheraCyte (R) were then immediately implanted SC into the mice. Throughout the 2-month study, constant high ES levels of up to 3.7 mu g/ml were detected in the plasma of the mice preimplanted with the devices, while lower but also constant levels of ES (up to 2.1 mu g/ml plasma) were detected in the mice that had received devices preloaded with the ES-expressing cells. Immunohistochemistry using anti-ES antibody showed reaction within the device and outside it, demonstrating that ES, secreted by the confined recombinant cells, permeated through the membrane and reached the surrounding tissues.

High-resolution X-ray diffractometry is used to probe the nature of a diffraction-peak broadening previously noticed in quantum dots (QDs) systems with freestanding InAs islands on top of GaAs (001) substrates [Freitas et al., Phys. Status Solidi (A) 204, 2548 (2007)]. The procedure is hence extended to further investigate the capping process of InAs/GaAs QDs. A direct correlation is established between QDs growth rates and misorientation of lattice-planes at the samples surfaces. This effect provides an alternative too] for studying average strain fields on QDs systems in standard triple axis diffractometers running on X-ray tube sources, which are much more common than synchrotron facilities. In this work, we report on the magnetic properties of nickel nanoparticles (NP) in a SiO(2)-C thin film matrix, prepared by a polymeric precursor method, with Ni content x in the 0-10 wt% range. Microstructural analyses of the films showed that the Ni NP are homogenously distributed in the SiO(2)-C matrix and have spherical shape with average diameter of similar to 10 nm. The magnetic properties reveal features of superparamagnetism with blocking temperatures T (B) similar to 10 K. The average diameter of the Ni NP, estimated from magnetization measurements, was found to be similar to 4 nm for the x = 3 wt% Ni sample, in excellent agreement with X-ray diffraction data. M versus H hysteresis loops indicated that the Ni NP are free from a surrounding oxide layer. We have also observed that coercivity (H (C)) develops appreciably below T (B), and follows the H (C) ae [1 - (T/T (B))(0.5)] relationship, a feature expected for randomly oriented and non-interacting nanoparticles. The extrapolation of H (C) to 0 K indicates that coercivity decreases with increasing x, suggesting that dipolar interactions may be relevant in films with x > 3 wt% Ni.

Defects are usually present in organic polymer films and are commonly invoked to explain the low efficiency obtained in organic-based optoelectronic devices. We propose that controlled insertion of substitutional impurities may, on the contrary, tune the optoelectronic properties of the underivatized organic material and, in the case studied here, maximize the efficiency of a solar cell. We investigate a specific oxygen-impurity substitution, the keto-defect -(CH(2)-C=O)- in underivatized crystalline poly(p-phenylenevinylene) (PPV), and its impact on the electronic structure of the bulk film, through a combined classical (force-field) and quantum mechanical (DFT) approach. We find defect states which suggest a spontaneous electron hole separation typical of a donor acceptor interface, optimal for photovoltaic devices. Furthermore, the inclusion of oxygen impurities does not introduce defect states in the gap and thus, contrary to standard donor-acceptor systems, should preserve the intrinsic high open circuit voltage (V(oc)) that may be extracted from PPV-based devices.

The control of molecular architecture provided by the layer-by-layer (LbL) technique has led to enhanced biosensors, in which advantageous features of distinct materials can be combined. Full optimization of biosensing performance, however, is only reached if the film morphology is suitable for the principle of detection of a specific biosensor. In this paper, we report a detailed morphology analysis of LbL films made with alternating layers of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) and polyamidoamine (PAMAM) dendrimers, which were then covered with a layer of penicillinase (PEN). An optimized performance to detect penicillin G was obtained with 6-bilayer SWNT/PAMAM LbL films deposited on p-Si-SiO(2)-Ta(2)O(5) chips, used in biosensors based on a capacitive electrolyte-insulator-semiconductor (EIS) and a light-addressable potentiometric sensor (LAPS) structure, respectively. Field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) images indicated that the LbL films were porous, with a large surface area due to interconnection of SWNT into PAMAM layers. This morphology was instrumental for the adsorption of a larger quantity of PEN, with the resulting LbL film being highly stable. The experiments to detect penicillin were performed with constant-capacitance (Con Cap) and constant-current (CC) measurements for EIS and LAPS sensors, respectively, which revealed an enhanced detection signal and sensitivity of ca. 100 mV/decade for the field-effect sensors modified with the PAMAM/SWNT LbL film. It is concluded that controlling film morphology is essential for an enhanced performance of biosensors, not only in terms of sensitivity but also stability and response time. This paper presents the characterization of single-mode waveguides for 980 and 1550 nm wavelengths. High quality planar waveguide structure was fabricated from Y(1-x)Er(x)Al(3)(BO(3))(4) multilayer thin films with x = 0.02, 0.05, 0.1, 0.3, and 0.5, prepared through the polymeric precursor and sol-gel methods using spin-coating. The propagation losses of the planar waveguides varying from 0.63 to 0.88 dB/cm were measured at 632.8 and 1550 nm. The photoluminescence spectra and radiative lifetimes of the Er(3+) (4)I(13/2) energy level were measured in waveguiding geometry. For most samples the photoluminescence decay was single exponential with lifetimes in between 640 mu s and 200 mu s, depending on the erbium concentration and synthesis method. These results indicate that Er doped YAl(3)(BO(3))(4) compounds are promising for low loss waveguides. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All fights reserved.

The phase formation kinetics of YAP (YAlO(3)) synthesized through the polymeric precursor method was investigated by thermal analysis, X-ray diffraction and FT-IR spectroscopy. We demonstrated that the YAP synthesis is highly dependent on the heat and mass transport during all stages of the synthesis route. In the first stages, during the preparation of amorphous precursor, ""hot spots"" need to be suppressed to avoid the occurrence of chemical inhomogeneities. Very high heating rates combined with small amorphous particles are advantageous in the last stage during the formation of crystalline phase. We were able to synthesize nanosized particles of YAP single phase at temperatures around 1100 A degrees C for future preparation of phosphors or ceramics for optics.

The synthesis of Y(0.9)Er(0.1)Al(3)(BO(3))(4) crystalline powders and vitreous thin films were studied. Precursor solutions were obtained using a modified polymeric precursor method using D-sorbitol as complexant agent. The chemical reactions were described. Y(0.)9Er(0.1)Al(3)(BO(3))(4) composition presents good thermal stability with regard to crystallization. The Y(0.9)Er(0.1)Al(3)(BO(3))(4) crystallized phase can be obtained at 1,150 degrees C, in agreement with other authors. Crack- and porosity-free films were obtained with very small grain size and low RMS roughness. The films thickness revealed to be linearly dependent on precursor solution viscosity, being the value of 25 mPa s useful to prepare high-quality amorphous multi-layers (up to similar to 800 nm) at 740 degrees C during 2 h onto silica substrates by spin coating with a gyrset technology.

In this paper we show the fabrication of hydrophobic polymeric surfaces through laser microstructuring. By using 70-ps pulses from a Q-switched and mode-locked Nd:YAG laser at 532 nm, we were able to produce grooves with different width and separation, resulting in square-shaped pillar patterns. We investigate the dependence of the morphology on the surface static contact angle for water, showing that it is in agreement with the Cassie-Baxter model. We demonstrate the fabrication of a superhydrophobic polymeric surface, presenting a water contact angle of 157 degrees. The surface structuring method presented here seems to be an interesting option to control the wetting properties of polymeric surfaces. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Low-frequency noise in an electrolyte-insulator- semiconductor (EIS) structure functionalized with multilayers of polyamidoamine (PAMAM) dendrimer and single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNT) is studied. The noise spectral density exhibits 1/f(gamma) dependence with the power factor of gamma approximate to 0.8 and gamma = 0.8-1.8 for the bare and functionalized EIS sensor, respectively. The gate-voltage noise spectral density is practically independent of the pH value of the solution and increases with increasing gate voltage or gate-leakage current. It has been revealed that functionalization of an EIS structure with a PAMAM/SWNTs multilayer leads to an essential reduction of the 1/f noise. To interpret the noise behavior in bare and functionalized EIS devices, a gate-current noise model for capacitive EIS structures based on an equivalent flatband-voltage fluctuation concept has been developed.

The use of melanin in bioinspired applications is mostly limited by its poor stability in solid films. This problem has been addressed here by incorporating melanin into dipalmitoyl phosphatidyl glycerol (DPPG) liposomes, which were then immobilized onto a solid substrate as an LbL film. Results from steady-state and time-resolved fluorescence indicated an increased stability for melanin incorporated into DPPG liposomes. If not protected by liposomes, melanin looses completely its fluorescence properties in LbL films. The thickness of the liposome-melanin layer obtained from neutron reflectivity data was 4.1 +/- 0.2 nm, consistent with the value estimated for the phospholipid bilayer of the liposomes, an evidence of the collapse of most liposomes. On the other hand, the final roughness indicated that some of the liposomes had their structure preserved. In summary, liposomes were proven excellent for encapsulation, thus providing a suitable environment, closer to the physiological conditions without using organic solvents or high pHs. A new polymeric zinc(II) complex with thiophene-2-carboxylic acid (-tpc) of composition [Zn2(C20H12O8S4)]n was obtained and structurally characterized by X-ray diffraction, thermal analysis, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), and infrared spectroscopies. Upfield shift in the 1H-NMR spectrum is explained by the crystalline structure, which shows the thiophene rings overlapping each other in parallel pairs. The compound crystallizes in the monoclinic system, space group P21/c, with a = 9.7074(4) angstrom, b = 13.5227(3) angstrom, c = 18.9735(7) angstrom, = 95.797(10)degrees, and Z = 4. Three -tpc groups bridge between two Zn(II) ions through oxygens and the fourth one bridges between one of these ions and the third one, symmetry related by a twofold screw axis. This arrangement gives rise to infinite chains along the crystallographic a direction. The metal atoms display an approximate tetrahedral configuration. The complex is insoluble in water, ethanol, and acetone, but soluble in dimethyl sulfoxide.

Cerium doped yttrium aluminate perovskite YAlO(3) (YAP) powders are pursued as interesting alternatives to bulk crystals for application in scintillating devices. The emissions of these materials in the near-UV and visible spectral regions originate from electric dipole transitions between 4f and 5d energy levels of Ce(3+) and largely depend on the environment occupied by the ion. In search for improved synthesis conditions that can lead to phase pure powders with optimized structural and spectroscopic characteristics, in this work we have employed the polymeric precursor (Pechini) method to prepare crystalline and amorphous YAP:Ce powders doped with 1-10 mol% Ce(3+). Interesting composite materials were also obtained by dispersing some of the YAP:Ce powders in silica xerogels. A comparative structural and spectroscopic study of all the samples was done by XRD, FT-IR, emission, excitation and excited state lifetime measurements. In agreement with previous reports, excitation at 296 nm results in intense emission in the range 315-425 nm with an average decay time of 30 ns. (c) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A forum is a valuable tool to foster reflection in an in-depth discussion; however, it forces the course mediator to continually pay close attention in order to coordinate learners` activities. Moreover, monitoring a forum is time consuming given that it is impossible to know in advance when new messages are going to be posted. Additionally, a forum may be inactive for a long period and suddenly receive a burst of messages forcing forum mediators to frequently log on in order to know how the discussion is unfolding to intervene whenever it is necessary. Mediators also need to deal with a large amount of messages to identify off-pattern situations. This work presents a piece of action research that investigates how to improve coordination support in a forum using mobile devices for mitigating mediator`s difficulties in following the status of a forum. Based on summarized information extracted from message meta-data, mediators consult visual information summaries on PDAs and receive textual notifications in their mobile phone. This investigation revealed that mediators used the mobile-based coordination support to keep informed on what is taking place within the forum without the need to log on their desktop computer. Fabrication and electroluminescent properties of devices containing europium complexes of general formula [Eu(ACIND)(3)(TPPO)(2)], where ACIND, 2-acyl-1,3-indandionate ligands: and TPPO, triphenylphosphine oxide. as emitter layers are discussed. The double-layer devices based on these complexes present the following configurations: device 1: ITO/TPD/[Eu(AlND)(3)(TPPO)(2)]/Al: device 2: ITO/TPD/[Eu(ISOV-IND)(3)(TPPO)(2)]/Al and device 3: ITO/TPD/[Eu(BIND)(3)(TPPO)(2)]/Al, where AlND, 2-acetyl-1,3-indandionate; ISOVIND, 2-isovaleryl-1,3-indandionate; and BIND, 2-benzoyl-1,3-indandionate, respectively. These devices exhibited photo and electroluminescent emissions. An important characteristic presented by devices is that their electroluminescent (EL) spectra, in the region of (5)D(0) -> (7)F(J) (J = 0, 1, 2, 3 and 4) transitions of Eu(3+) ion, show profiles that are different from photoluminescent (PL) ones. In addition to narrow bands arising from intraconfigurational-4f(6) transitions, devices 1 and 2 also exhibited a broad band with maximum at around 500 nm which is assigned to electrophosphorescence from the indandionate ligands. On the other hand, EL spectra of device 3 present only narrow bands from (5)D(0) -> (7)F(J) transitions. [Eu(ACIND)(3)(TPPO)(2)] complexes are promising candidates to prepare efficient organic light-emitting devices (OLEDs) when compared with those containing Eu(3+)-complexes of aliphatic beta-diketonate anions.
