The assessment of organic matter (OM) sources in sediments and soils is a key to better understand the biogeochemical cycling of carbon in aquatic environments. While traditional molecular marker-based methods have provided such information for typical two end member (allochthonous/terrestrial vs. autochthonous/microbial)-dominated systems, more detailed, biomass-specific assessments are needed for ecosystems with complex OM inputs such as tropical and sub-tropical wetlands and estuaries where aquatic macrophytes and macroalgae may play an important role as OM sources. The aim of this study was to assess the utility of a combined approach using compound specific stable carbon isotope analysis and an n-alkane based proxy (Paq) to differentiate submerged and emergent/terrestrial vegetation OM inputs to soils/sediments from a sub-tropical wetland and estuarine system, the Florida Coastal Everglades. Results show that Paq values (0.13–0.51) for the emergent/terrestrial plants were generally lower than those for freshwater/marine submerged vegetation (0.45–1.00) and that compound specific δ13C values for the n-alkanes (C23 to C31) were distinctively different for terrestrial/emergent and freshwater/marine submerged plants. While crossplots of the Paq and n-alkane stable isotope values for the C23n-alkane suggest that OM inputs are controlled by vegetation changes along the freshwater to marine transect, further resolution regarding OM input changes along this landscape was obtained through principal component analysis (PCA), successfully grouping the study sites according to the OM source strengths. The data show the potential for this n-alkane based multi-proxy approach as a means of assessing OM inputs to complex ecosystems.

Located at a subtropical latitude, the expansive Florida Everglades contains a mixture of tropical and temperate diatom taxa, as well as a unique flora adapted to the calcareous, often excessively hot, seasonally flooded wetland conditions. This flora has been poorly documented taxonomically, although diatoms are recognized as important indicators of environmental change in this threatened ecosystem. Gomphonema is a dominant genus in the freshwater marsh, and is represented by highly variable species complexes, including Gomphonema gracile Ehrenberg, Gomphonema intricatum var. vibrio Ehrenberg sensu Fricke, Gomphonema vibrioides Reichardt & Lange-Bertalot and Gomphonema parvulum (Kützing) Grunow. These taxa have been shown to exhibit wide morphological variation in other regions, resulting in considerable nomenclatural confusion. We collected Gomphonema from 237 sites distributed throughout the freshwater Everglades and used qualitative and quantitative morphological data to identify 20 distinguishable populations. Taxonomie assignments were based on descriptions and/or observations of type material of relevant taxa when possible, but deviations from original morphological range descriptions were common. We then compared morphological variation in Everglades Gomphonema taxa to that reported for the same taxa in other regions and suggest revisions of taxonomie concepts when necessary.

Zooplankton was studied on eight stations in the marginal ice zone (MIZ) of the Barents Sea, in May 1999, along two transects across the ice edge. On each station, physical background measurements and zooplankton samples were taken every 6 h over a 24 h period at five discrete depth intervals. Cluster analysis revealed separation of open water stations from all ice stations as well as high similarity level among replicates belonging to particular station. Based on five replicates per station, analysis of variance (ANOVA) confirmed significant differences (P < 0.05) in abundances of the main mesozooplankton taxa among stations. Relations between the zooplankton community and environmental parameters were established using redundancy analysis (CANOCO). In total, 55% of mesozooplankton variability within studied area was explained by eight variables with significant conditional effects: depth stratum, fluorescence, temperature, salinity, bottom depth, latitude, bloom situation, and ice concentration. GLM models supported supposition about clear and negative relationship between concentration of Oithona similis, and overall mesozooplankton diversity The analyses showed a dynamic relationship between mesozooplankton distribution and hydrological conditions on short-term scale. Furthermore, our study demonstrated that variability in the physical environment of dynamic MIZ of the Barents Sea has measurable effect on the Arctic pelagic ecosystem.

With the aim of analyzing the complex physical and biogeochemical interactions at high temporal and spatial resolution in the complex estuarine waters of Alfacs Bay, a beam attenuation-based approach was used as optical proxy of different biogeochemical variables. Thus, the dataset contains the attenuation proxies as well as laboratory results from the analysis of water samples, which were used to validate our approach. In addition, the major physical forcing in the Bay was also measured.

Clay mineral assemblages in sediments from ANDRILL drill core AND-2A were used to reconstruct the Neogene palaeoenvironment. For the first time a clay mineral data set can be presented for southern McMurdo Sound, Ross Sea, Antarctica, that covers an expanded and fairly continuous Lower and Middle Miocene section. Although the occurrence of some authigenic smectites, zeolites and opal-CT documents diagenetic processes, the clay mineral assemblages allow a subdivision of the core into three intervals that reflect changes in provenance and volcanic activity. Interval I (1000-440 mbsf, 20.0-16.5 Ma) is characterised by a dominant sediment source in the Transantarctic Mountains. Frequent and short-term changes in the illite and smectite concentrations were caused by the influx of volcanic sediment components from southern McMurdo Sound and by diagenesis. Interval II (440-225 mbsf, 16.5-15.0 Ma) has much more uniform illite and smectite contents. The assemblage is derived from the Transantarctic Mountains. Interval III (225-0 mbsf, 15.0-0 Ma, containing major hiatuses) shows a distinctly enhanced volcanic influence and sediment components that come from the south of McMurdo Sound. The AND-2A clay mineral assemblages indicate persistent physical weathering conditions and do not mirror the Mid-Miocene Climatic Optimum. They indicate that the climatic changes were probably not strong enough to cause a modification in the weathering regime on the Antarctic continent.

The dynamical evolution of dislocations in plastically deformed metals is controlled by both deterministic factors arising out of applied loads and stochastic effects appearing due to fluctuations of internal stress. Such type of stochastic dislocation processes and the associated spatially inhomogeneous modes lead to randomness in the observed deformation structure. Previous studies have analyzed the role of randomness in such textural evolution but none of these models have considered the impact of a finite decay time (all previous models assumed instantaneous relaxation which is "unphysical") of the stochastic perturbations in the overall dynamics of the system. The present article bridges this knowledge gap by introducing a colored noise in the form of an Ornstein-Uhlenbeck noise in the analysis of a class of linear and nonlinear Wiener and Ornstein-Uhlenbeck processes that these structural dislocation dynamics could be mapped on to. Based on an analysis of the relevant Fokker-Planck model, our results show that linear Wiener processes remain unaffected by the second time scale in the problem but all nonlinear processes, both Wiener type and Ornstein-Uhlenbeck type, scale as a function of the noise decay time τ. The results are expected to ramify existing experimental observations and inspire new numerical and laboratory tests to gain further insight into the competition between deterministic and random effects in modeling plastically deformed samples.

Nodule samples obtained were described and studied on board for 1) observation of occurrence and morphology in and outside samplers, size classification, measurement of weight and calculation of population density (kg/m2); 2) photographing whole nodules on the plate marked with the frames of unit areas of both 0cean-70 (0.50 m2) and freefall grab (0.13 m2), and that of typical samples on the plate with a 5 cm grid scale: 3) observation of internal structures of the nodules on cut section; and 4) determination of mineral composition by X-ray diffractometer. The relation between nodule types and geological environment or chemical composition was examined by referring to other data of related studies, such as sedimentology. acoustic survey, and chemical analysis.

Sea ice models contain many different parameterizations of which one of the most commonly used is a subgrid-scale ice thickness distribution (ITD). The effect of this model component and the associated ice strength formulation on the reproduction of observed Arctic sea ice is assessed. To this end the model's performance in reproducing satellite observations of sea ice concentration, thickness and drift is evaluated. For an unbiased comparison, different model configurations with and without an ITD are tuned with an automated parameter optimization. The original combination of ITD and ice strength parameterization does not lead to better results than a simple single category model. Yet changing to a simpler ice strength formulation, which depends linearly on the mean ice thickness across all thickness categories, allows to clearly improve the model-data misfit when using an ITD. In the original formulation, the ice strength depends strongly on the number of thickness categories, so that introducing more categories can lead to thicker albeit weaker ice on average.
