This paper makes a proposal for the establishment of therapeutic communities for people with severe and persistent mental illnesses in Ghana. It discusses the history and features of therapeutic communities, as well as the elements that make it compatible with the agenda of the new 2012 Ghana mental health bill. This paper also discusses the present state of mental health care in this West African country and how the establishment of therapeutic communities will promote recovery of people with severe and persistent mental illness, and change the perception of chronic mental illness in Ghana. A discussion of potential modifications of the therapeutic community is offered as well as justifications for maintaining other structural aspects should this establishment materialize in Ghana. The costs of setting up therapeutic communities in this third world country are addressed with the offered conclusion that costs far outweigh the benefits. Finally, given the endeavor of the proposed therapeutic communities to assist in deinstitutionalization of care, cautions are made in this paper to ensure that the trends experienced in the United States with deinstitutionalization are not replicated in Ghana. A proposal is made in the conclusion for Ghana to move past therapeutic communities when developmentally able- to community mental health centers which were in part established to account for some of the fallouts of deinstitutionalization by providing a comprehensive and extensive range of services for people with severe and persistent mental illness.

We present a mechanism for persistent charge current. Quantum spin Hall insulators hold dissipationless spin currents in their edges so that, for a given spin orientation, a net charge current flows which is exactly compensated by the counterflow of the opposite spin. Here we show that ferromagnetic order in the edge upgrades the spin currents into persistent charge currents without applied fields. For that matter, we study the Hubbard model including Haldane-Kane-Mele spin-orbit coupling in a zigzag ribbon and consider the case of graphene. We find three electronic phases with magnetic edges that carry currents reaching 0.4 nA, comparable to persistent currents in metallic rings, for the small spin-orbit coupling in graphene. One of the phases is a valley half metal.

Colonization with Tannerella forsythensis may characterize the conversion of periodontally healthy sites into diseased sites. This three-year study describes the prevalence of T forsythensis and its relationship to clinical loss of attachment (LOA) in a group of adolescents considered at risk of developing early chronic periodontitis. Adolescents with (LOA+) and without (LOA-) loss of attachment were examined at baseline and 1.5 and 3 yrs subsequently. On each occasion, attachment loss was measured on selected teeth, and the presence of T. forsythensis in their subgingival plaque samples was determined by PCR. T. forsythensis prevalence in LOA+ subjects at baseline (64%) increased to 82% and 86% on subsequent examinations. In contrast, prevalence of T. forsythensis in LOA- subjects was always significantly lower (25%, 36%, and 32%, respectively). The odds of loss of attachment were 8.16 times greater in subjects infected with T. forsythensis at each examination. These results suggest that T. forsythensis is strongly associated with loss of attachment in this adolescent population.
