So far, the majority of reports on on-line measurement considered soil properties with direct spectral responses in near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS). This work reports on the results of on-line measurement of soil properties with indirect spectral responses, e.g. pH, cation exchange capacity (CEC), exchangeable calcium (Caex) and exchangeable magnesium (Mgex) in one field in Bedfordshire in the UK. The on-line sensor consisted of a subsoiler coupled with an AgroSpec mobile, fibre type, visible and near infrared (vis–NIR) spectrophotometer (tec5 Technology for Spectroscopy, Germany), with a measurement range 305–2200 nm to acquire soil spectra in diffuse reflectance mode. General calibration models for the studied soil properties were developed with a partial least squares regression (PLSR) with one-leave-out cross validation, using spectra measured under non-mobile laboratory conditions of 160 soil samples collected from different fields in four farms in Europe, namely, Czech Republic, Denmark, Netherland and UK. A group of 25 samples independent from the calibration set was used as independent validation set. Higher accuracy was obtained for laboratory scanning as compared to on-line scanning of the 25 independent samples. The prediction accuracy for the laboratory and on-line measurements was classified as excellent/very good for pH (RPD = 2.69 and 2.14 and r2 = 0.86 and 0.78, respectively), and moderately good for CEC (RPD = 1.77 and 1.61 and r2 = 0.68 and 0.62, respectively) and Mgex (RPD = 1.72 and 1.49 and r2 = 0.66 and 0.67, respectively). For Caex, very good accuracy was calculated for laboratory method (RPD = 2.19 and r2 = 0.86), as compared to the poor accuracy reported for the on-line method (RPD = 1.30 and r2 = 0.61). The ability of collecting large number of data points per field area (about 12,800 point per 21 ha) and the simultaneous analysis of several soil properties without direct spectral response in the NIR range at relatively high operational speed and appreciable accuracy, encourage the recommendation of the on-line measurement system for site specific fertilisation.

ABTRACT This document presents a study about the operation and applications of PEM fuel cells (Proton exchange membrane fuel cells), fed with pure hydrogen and oxygen obtained from compressed air. Having evaluated the process of these cells and the variables involved on it, such as pressure, humidity and temperature, there is a variety of methods for implementing their control and to set up them around optimal values for greater efficiency in the process. Taking as primary process variable the temperature, and exposing its correct values around 80 degrees centigrade, between which must be placed, is carried out a model of the heating process and the temperature evolution related with the resistive heater power on the complex frequency domain, and is implemented a measuring system with thermocouple sensor type K performing a almost linear response. The differential signal measured by the sensor is amplified through INA2126 instrumentation amplifiers, and is developed a cold junction error correction algorithm (error produced by the inclusion of additional metals of connectors on the thermocouple effect). Data from the test concerning the temperature measurement system are included , including deviations or error regarding the ideal values of measurement. For data acquisition and implementation of control algorithms, is used a PC with LabVIEW software from National Instruments, which makes programming intuitive, versatile, visual, and useful to perform simple user interfaces. The connection between the instrumentation and control hardware of the cell and the PC interface is via a USB data acquisition NI 6800 that has a large number of analog inputs and outputs. Once stored the samples of the measured signal, and correct the error noted above junction, is implemented a software controller PID (proportional-integral-derivative), which is presented as one of the best methods for their programming simplicity and effectiveness for the control of such variables. To evaluate the performance of the system are presented simulations using Matlab and Simulink software thereby determining the best strategies to develop PID control, and possible outcomes of the process. As fluid heating system, is employed a heater resistor element whose power is controlled by an electronic circuit comprising a zero crossing detector of the AC power wave and a system consisting of a Triac and its drive circuit. As made with temperature variable it is developed an instrumentation system for gas pressure in the circuit, variable ranging in values around 3 atmospheres, it is employed a pressure sensor with a current output via 4-20 mA loop, and a single current to voltage converter to adequate the input to the data acquisition system. Consequently is developed the scheme and components needed for circulation, heating and humidification of the gases used in the process as well as the location of sensors and actuators. Finally the document presents the list of algorithms and an appendix with information about Labview software.

Sound pressure measurement is an extremely important process in the field of acoustic engineering, with applications in numerous subfields, like for instance building acoustics and noise control, where it is necessary to be able to accurately measure sound pressure in very diverse (and sometimes adverse) conditions. On the other hand, the growing ubiquity of mobile devices such as smartphones or tablets, which combine processing power, connectivity, interactivity and an intuitive interface in a small size, makes it possible to use these devices as quality low-cost measurement systems. This Project aims to use the input-output capabilities of iOS-based mobile devices, in particular the iPhone, together with their processing power, wireless connectivity and geolocation features, to implement an acoustic measurement system that rivals the performance of existing devices. SonoPhone allows, with the addition of an adequate measurement microphone, to carry out measurements that comply with current technical regulations, as well as programming, configuring, storing and transmitting the results of the measurement. These measurements will be geolocated using the integrated GPS, and can be transmitted effortlessly to a remote cloud storage. The application is structured in modular fashion. A data acquisition module reads the signal from the microphone, while a back-end module carries out the necessary processing. Other modules permit the device to be calibrated, or control the configuration of the measurement and its storage or transmission. A Graphical User Interface (GUI) allows visual feedback on the measurement in progress, and provides the user with real-time control over the measurement parameters. Not only an application has been developed; a laboratory test was carried out with the goal of determining if the hardware of the iPhone permits the whole system to comply with international regulations regarding sound level meters.

This paper proposes a method for the identification of different partial discharges (PDs) sources through the analysis of a collection of PD signals acquired with a PD measurement system. This method, robust and sensitive enough to cope with noisy data and external interferences, combines the characterization of each signal from the collection, with a clustering procedure, the CLARA algorithm. Several features are proposed for the characterization of the signals, being the wavelet variances, the frequency estimated with the Prony method, and the energy, the most relevant for the performance of the clustering procedure. The result of the unsupervised classification is a set of clusters each containing those signals which are more similar to each other than to those in other clusters. The analysis of the classification results permits both the identification of different PD sources and the discrimination between original PD signals, reflections, noise and external interferences. The methods and graphical tools detailed in this paper have been coded and published as a contributed package of the R environment under a GNU/GPL license.

Through the present research, the feasibility of Automatic Gamma-Radiation Spectral Decomposition by Linear Algebraic Equation-Solving Algorithms using Pseudo-Inverse Techniques is explored. The design of the before mentioned algorithms has been done having into account their possible implementation on Specific-Purpose Processors of Low Complexity. In the first chapter, the techniques for the detection and measurement of gamma radiation employed to construct the spectra being used throughout the research are reviewed. Similarly, the basic concepts related with the nature and properties of the hard electromagnetic radiation are also re-examined, together with the physic and electronic processes involved in the detection of such kind of radiation, with special emphasis in the intrinsic statistical nature of the spectrum build-up process, which is considered as a classification of the number of individual photon-detections as a function of the energy associated to each individual photon. Fbr such, a brief description of the most important matter-energy interaction phenomena conditioning the detection and spectrum formation processes is given. The radiation detector is considered as the most critical element in the measurement system, as this device strongly conditions the detection process. Fbr this reason, the characteristics of the most frequent detectors are re-examined, with special emphasis on those of semiconductor nature, as these are the most frequently employed ones nowadays. Finally, the fundamental electronic subsystems for preaconditioning and treating of the signal delivered by the detector, classically addresed as Nuclear Electronics, is described. As far as Spectroscopy is concerned, the subsystem most interesting for the scope covered by the present research is the so-called Multichannel Analyzer, which is devoted to the cualitative treatment of the signal, building-up a hystogram of radiation intensity in the range of energies in which the detector is sensitive. The resulting N-dimensional vector is generally known with the ñame of Radiation Spectrum. The different radio-nuclides contributing to the spectrum of a composite source will leave their fingerprint in the resulting spectrum. Through the second chapter, an exhaustive review of the mathematical methods devised to the present moment to identify the radio-nuclides present in the composite spectrum and to quantify their relative contributions, is reviewed. One of the more popular ones is the so-known Múltiple Linear Regression, which is proposed as the best suited approach according to the constraints and restrictions present in the formulation of the problem, i.e., the need to treat low-resolution spectra, the absence of control by a human operator (un-supervision), and the possibility of being implemented as low-complexity algorithms amenable of being supported by VLSI Specific Processors. The analysis problem is formally stated through the third chapter, following the hints established in this context, and it is shown that the addressed problem may be satisfactorily solved under the point of view of Linear Associative Memories. An operator based on this kind of structures may provide the solution to the spectral decomposition problem posed. In the same context, a pair of complementary adaptive algorithms useful for the construction of the solving operator are proposed, which share certain special arithmetic characteristics that render them specially suitable for their implementation on VLSI Processors. The adaptive nature of the associative memory provides a high flexibility to this operator, in what refers to the progressive inclusión of new information to the knowledge base. Through the fourth chapter, this fact is treated together with a new problem to be considered, of a high interest but quite complex nature, as is the treatment of the deformations appearing in the spectrum when instrumental drifts in both the detecting device and the pre-acconditioning electronics are to be taken into account. These deformations render the Linear Regression Model proposed almost unuseful to describe the resulting spectrum. A new model including the drifts is derived as an extensión of the individual contributions to the composite spectrum, which implies a simple extensión of the Associative Memory, which renders this suitable to accept the drifts in the composite spectrum, thus producing a robust analysis of contributions. The extensión method is based on the Low-Amplitude Perturbation Hypothesis. Experimental practice shows that in certain cases the instrumental drifts may provoke severe distortions in the resulting spectrum, which can not be treated with the before-mentioned hypothesis. To cover also these less-frequent cases, through the fifth chapter, the problem involving strong drifts is treated under the point of view of Non-Linear Optimization Techniques. This reformulation carries the study to the consideration of recursive algorithms based on the Gauss-Newton methods, which allow the introduction of Feed-Back Memories, computing elements with a sensibly improved capability to decompose spectra affected by strong drifts. The research concludes with a discussion of the results obtained in the three main levéis of study considerad, which are presented in chapters third, fourth and fifth, toghether with the review of the main conclusions derived from the study and the outline of the main research lines opened by the present work.

ABSTRACT. This Project consists on the development of an acoustic research of the movie theater 8 of the Kinepolis complex in Ciudad de la Imagen, Madrid. This room has 408 spots. Kinepolis is one of the biggest multiplex complexes in Europe. It has 9,200 locations disposed in 25 rooms. There are two large corridors which give access to all of theaters. In the middle of the structure, there is the main hall that connects these corridors. In 1998, at the time when the complex was open, it was awarded with the Record Guinness for the biggest theater in the world, which has 996 locations. The target of this project is to successfully characterize the acoustics of a movie theater through reverberation time and a virtual model. In order to reach this goal, in the first place, we are going to perform both, an acoustic and a geometric measurement of the room using DIRAC measurement system. The results of these measures will allow us to build and validate a virtual model of the room, using the simulation software EASE. We are going to use the DIRAC system in order to accomplish the acoustic measure. This operation gives us a huge variety of acoustic parameters. Not all of these are going to be used for this research, only the most significant ones. These are described in the theoretical introduction. The geometric measure is essential to help us to build the virtual model, because the model has to be exactly equal as the real room. This measurement will be performed with an electronic distance meter and a measuring tape. Once the virtual model is finished, it will be proved. This validation process will be realized by adjusting the reverberation time in the model. We will change the walls materials, therefore, the overall absorption of the room will change. We want the model reverberation time resemble to the real one. This practice is going to ensure that the model acoustic performance is close to the real one. In addition, it has to be successfully validate of we want the future comparisons to be reliable. Finally, after the model virtual simulation, we will compare the simulated results with the measure in the room. In this process, we will compare not only the reverberation time, but others parameters that keep relation with the reverberation time. We will verify this way, if the reverberation time is or is not an appropriate acoustic parameter to validate a virtual model of a movie theater. There have been done others similar acoustic researches in different theaters with different sizes. The aim of performing similar researches in different rooms is to determine if the size of the room infers in the validation process.

The Optical, Spectroscopic, and Infrared Remote Imaging System OSIRIS is the scientific camera system onboard the Rosetta spacecraft (Figure 1). The advanced high performance imaging system will be pivotal for the success of the Rosetta mission. OSIRIS will detect 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko from a distance of more than 106 km, characterise the comet shape and volume, its rotational state and find a suitable landing spot for Philae, the Rosetta lander. OSIRIS will observe the nucleus, its activity and surroundings down to a scale of ~2 cm px−1. The observations will begin well before the onset of cometary activity and will extend over months until the comet reaches perihelion. During the rendezvous episode of the Rosetta mission, OSIRIS will provide key information about the nature of cometary nuclei and reveal the physics of cometary activity that leads to the gas and dust coma. OSIRIS comprises a high resolution Narrow Angle Camera (NAC) unit and a Wide Angle Camera (WAC) unit accompanied by three electronics boxes. The NAC is designed to obtain high resolution images of the surface of comet 7P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko through 12 discrete filters over the wavelength range 250–1000 nm at an angular resolution of 18.6 μrad px−1. The WAC is optimised to provide images of the near-nucleus environment in 14 discrete filters at an angular resolution of 101 μrad px−1. The two units use identical shutter, filter wheel, front door, and detector systems. They are operated by a common Data Processing Unit. The OSIRIS instrument has a total mass of 35 kg and is provided by institutes from six European countries

This paper presents a new methodology for measurement of the instantaneous average exhaust mass flow rate in reciprocating internal combustion engines to be used to determinate real driving emissions on light duty vehicles, as part of a Portable Emission Measurement System (PEMS). Firstly a flow meter, named MIVECO flow meter, was designed based on a Pitot tube adapted to exhaust gases which are characterized by moisture and particle content, rapid changes in flow rate and chemical composition, pulsating and reverse flow at very low engine speed. Then, an off-line methodology was developed to calculate the instantaneous average flow, considering the ?square root error? phenomenon. The paper includes the theoretical fundamentals, the developed flow meter specifications, the calibration tests, the description of the proposed off-line methodology and the results of the validation test carried out in a chassis dynamometer, where the validity of the mass flow meter and the methodology developed are demonstrated.

ACTIVITY is a database on DNA/RNA site sequences with known activity magnitudes, measurement systems, sequence-activity relationships under fixed experimental conditions and procedures to adapt these relationships from one measurement system to another. This database deposits information on DNA/RNA affinities to proteins and cell nuclear extracts, cutting efficiencies, gene transcription activity, mRNA translation efficiencies, mutability and other biological activities of natural sites occurring within promoters, mRNA leaders, and other regulatory regions in pro- and eukaryotic genomes, their mutant forms and synthetic analogues. Since activity magnitudes are heavily system-dependent, the current version of ACTIVITY is supplemented by three novel sub-databases: (i) SYSTEM, measurement systems; (ii) KNOWLEDGE, sequence-activity relationships under fixed experimental conditions; and (iii) CROSS_TEST, procedures adapting a relationship from one measurement system to another. These databases are useful in molecular biology, pharmacogenetics, metabolic engineering, drug design and biotechnology. The databases can be queried using SRS and are available through the Web, http://wwwmgs.bionet.nsc.ru/systems/Activity/.

The Rorschach Performance Assessment System (R-PAS) was developed in 2011 as analternative to the previous Comprehensive System. The goal was to improve the psychometrics, and particularly the validity, of this assessment method. The norms for children werequestionable in the Comprehensive system (e.g., outdated, low numbers of subjects) and validitystudies for children were sparse. One of the indicators included in the R-PAS system, theaggressive content indicator (AgC), is intended to reflect aggressive behavior, but few studieshave examined the validity of this indicator. This study examined the validity of AgC in asample of 32 children and adolescents receiving services at a residential treatment center.Subjects' AgC scores were analyzed in relation to demographics and diagnosis, as well as ratingsof aggression and conduct problems from the Behavioral Assessment System for Children-2(BASC-2) Parent and Teacher Reports. Correlations between the AgC score and BASC-2aggression and conduct problems scores were not statistically significant. None of thecorrelations between AgC score and a diagnosis of Conduct Disorder, Oppositional DefiantDisorder, Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, or Mood Disorders were significant either. Given thesmall sample size, null results may be a result of power concerns. The lack of significantcorrelations may however, indicate that operational definitions of aggression used in variousforms of measurement reflect different constructs.

As the population of Colorado continues to grow, the impacts from individual sewage disposal systems, or onsite wastewater systems (OWS), are becoming more apparent. Increased use of OWS impacts not only water quality but land use and development as well. These impacts have led to the need for a new generation of wastewater regulations in the state, a transition from the historic prescriptive requirements to a more progressive, performance-based system. A performance-based system will allow smarter growth, improved water quality, and cost savings for both the regulatory agencies and the OWS industry in Colorado. This project outlines the challenges and essential elements required to make this transition, and provides guidance on how to meet the challenges and overcome barriers to implementing a performance code in Colorado.

Data collected from hospital records and general practice heart-check forms were used to calculate process and outcome indicators for each condition. Our indicators were reliable (kappa scores 0.7-1.0) and widely accepted by clinicians as having face validity. Independent review of indicator-failed, in-hospital cases revealed that, for 27 of 28 process indicators, clinically legitimate reasons for withholding specific interventions were found in

The in situ real time measurement of the regression rate of a melting interface (RRMI) is performed by the ultrasonic measurement system reported here. The RRMI is the rate at which a solid/liquid interface (SLI) moves along a metallic rod while burning in an oxygen-enriched atmosphere and is an important flatnmability indicator. The ultrasonic transducer and associated equipment used to drive the transducer and record the echo signal is described, along with the process that transforms the acquired signals into a RRMI value. Test rods of various metals and geometric shapes were burned at several test conditions in different test facilities. The RRMI results with quantified errors are presented and reviewed. The effect of reduced gravity on burning metals is important to space-applications and RRMI results obtained in a reduced gravity environment are also presented.
