Due to the low workability of slipform concrete mixtures, the science of rheology is not strictly applicable for such concrete. However, the concept of rheological behavior may still be considered useful. A novel workability test method (Vibrating Kelly Ball or VKelly test) that would quantitatively assess the responsiveness of a dry concrete mixture to vibration, as is desired of a mixture suitable for slipform paving, was developed and evaluated. The objectives of this test method are for it to be cost-effective, portable, and repeatable while reporting the suitability of a mixture for use in slipform paving. The work to evaluate and refine the test was conducted in three phases: 1. Assess whether the VKelly test can signal variations in laboratory mixtures with a range of materials and proportions 2. Run the VKelly test in the field at a number of construction sites 3. Validate the VKelly test results using the Box Test developed at Oklahoma State University for slipform paving concrete The data collected to date indicate that the VKelly test appears to be suitable for assessing a mixture’s response to vibration (workability) with a low multiple operator variability. A unique parameter, VKelly Index, is introduced and defined that seems to indicate that a mixture is suitable for slipform paving when it falls in the range of 0.8 to 1.2 in./√s.

Aortic stenosis mostly occurs among old-old patients. Once symptoms appear, prognosis is guarded, with 2-year mortality as high as 50%. Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI) is a new therapeutic option in patients at very high surgical risk, who are mostly older persons. However, TAVI is associated with some complications, and patient selection remains a challenge. Comprehensive geriatric assessment (CGA) identifies patients with medical and functional problems likely to affect the TAVI post-operative course. Collaboration between cardiologists and geriatricians will likely become a standard approach to enhance the assessment of these frail patients and identify those most likely to benefit from TAVI.

The effects resulting from the introduction of an oxime group in place of the distal aromatic ring of the diphenyl moiety of LT175, previously reported as a PPARα/γ dual agonist, have been investigated. This modification allowed the identification of new bioisosteric ligands with fairly good activity on PPARα and fine-tuned moderate activity on PPARγ. For the most interesting compound (S)-3, docking studies in PPARα and PPARγ provided a molecular explanation for its different behavior as full and partial agonist of the two receptor isotypes, respectively. A further investigation of this compound was carried out performing gene expression studies on HepaRG cells. The results obtained allowed to hypothesize a possible mechanism through which this ligand could be useful in the treatment of metabolic disorders. The higher induction of the expression of some genes, compared to selective agonists, seems to confirm the importance of a dual PPARα/γ activity which probably involves a synergistic effect on both receptor subtypes.

The Iowa Department of Transportation (Iowa DOT) UTW Project (HR-559) initiated Ultra-Thin Whitetopping in Iowa. The project is located on Iowa Highway 21 between Iowa Highway 212 and U.S. Highway 6 in Iowa County, near Belle Plaine, Iowa. The above listed research project lasted for five years, and then was extended for another five year period. The new phase of the project (TR 432) was initiated by removing cracked panels existing in the 2-inch thick PCC sections and replacing them with three inches of PCC. The project extension provides an increased understanding of slab bonding conditions over a longer period, as well as knowledge regarding the behavior of the newly rehabilitated areas. This report documents the rehabilitation of the PCC patching of all fractured panels and several cracked panels, taking place in September of 2001.

Pavements are subjected to different stresses during their design lives. A properly designed pavement will perform adequately during its design life, and the distresses will not exceed the allowable limits; however, there are several factors that can lead to premature pavement failure. One such factor is moisture sensitivity. AASHTO T 283 is the standard test used in the moisture susceptibility evaluation of asphalt mixtures, but the results of the test are not very representative of the expected behavior of asphalt mixtures. The dynamic modulus test measures a fundamental property of the mixture. The results of the dynamic modulus test can be used directly in the Mechanistic-Empirical Pavement Design Guide (MEPDG) and are considered a very good representation of the expected field performance of the mixture. Further research is still needed to study how the dynamic modulus results are affected by moisture. The flow number test was studied in previous research as a candidate test for moisture-susceptibility evaluation, but the results of that research were not favorable. This research has four main objectives. The first objective of this research is to evaluate the usefulness of the dynamic modulus and flow number tests in moisture-susceptibility evaluation. The second objective is to compare the results to those achieved using the AASHTO T 283 test. The third objective is to study the effect of different methods of sample conditioning and testing conditions. The fourth objective of the research is to study the variability in the test results.

Large Dynamic Message Signs (DMSs) have been increasingly used on freeways, expressways and major arterials to better manage the traffic flow by providing accurate and timely information to drivers. Overhead truss structures are typically employed to support those DMSs allowing them to provide wider display to more lanes. In recent years, there is increasing evidence that the truss structures supporting these large and heavy signs are subjected to much more complex loadings than are typically accounted for in the codified design procedures. Consequently, some of these structures have required frequent inspections, retrofitting, and even premature replacement. Two manufacturing processes are primarily utilized on truss structures - welding and bolting. Recently, cracks at welding toes were reported for the structures employed in some states. Extremely large loads (e.g., due to high winds) could cause brittle fractures, and cyclic vibration (e.g., due to diurnal variation in temperature or due to oscillations in the wind force induced by vortex shedding behind the DMS) may lead to fatigue damage, as these are two major failures for the metallic material. Wind and strain resulting from temperature changes are the main loads that affect the structures during their lifetime. The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) Specification defines the limit loads in dead load, wind load, ice load, and fatigue design for natural wind gust and truck-induced gust. The objectives of this study are to investigate wind and thermal effects in the bridge type overhead DMS truss structures and improve the current design specifications (e.g., for thermal design). In order to accomplish the objective, it is necessary to study structural behavior and detailed strain-stress of the truss structures caused by wind load on the DMS cabinet and thermal load on the truss supporting the DMS cabinet. The study is divided into two parts. The Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) component and part of the structural analysis component of the study were conducted at the University of Iowa while the field study and related structural analysis computations were conducted at the Iowa State University. The CFD simulations were used to determine the air-induced forces (wind loads) on the DMS cabinets and the finite element analysis was used to determine the response of the supporting trusses to these pressure forces. The field observation portion consisted of short-term monitoring of several DMS Cabinet/Trusses and long-term monitoring of one DMS Cabinet/Truss. The short-term monitoring was a single (or two) day event in which several message sign panel/trusses were tested. The long-term monitoring field study extended over several months. Analysis of the data focused on trying to identify important behaviors under both ambient and truck induced winds and the effect of daily temperature changes. Results of the CFD investigation, field experiments and structural analysis of the wind induced forces on the DMS cabinets and their effect on the supporting trusses showed that the passage of trucks cannot be responsible for the problems observed to develop at trusses supporting DMS cabinets. Rather the data pointed toward the important effect of the thermal load induced by cyclic (diurnal) variations of the temperature. Thermal influence is not discussed in the specification, either in limit load or fatigue design. Although the frequency of the thermal load is low, results showed that when temperature range is large the restress range would be significant to the structure, especially near welding areas where stress concentrations may occur. Moreover stress amplitude and range are the primary parameters for brittle fracture and fatigue life estimation. Long-term field monitoring of one of the overhead truss structures in Iowa was used as the research baseline to estimate the effects of diurnal temperature changes to fatigue damage. The evaluation of the collected data is an important approach for understanding the structural behavior and for the advancement of future code provisions. Finite element modeling was developed to estimate the strain and stress magnitudes, which were compared with the field monitoring data. Fatigue life of the truss structures was also estimated based on AASHTO specifications and the numerical modeling. The main conclusion of the study is that thermal induced fatigue damage of the truss structures supporting DMS cabinets is likely a significant contributing cause for the cracks observed to develop at such structures. Other probable causes for fatigue damage not investigated in this study are the cyclic oscillations of the total wind load associated with the vortex shedding behind the DMS cabinet at high wind conditions and fabrication tolerances and induced stresses due to fitting of tube to tube connections.

Efforts to improve safety and traffic flow through merge areas on high volume/high speed roadways have included early merge and late merge concepts and several studies of the effectiveness of these concepts, many using Intelligent Transportation Systems for implementation. The Iowa Department of Transportation (Iowa DOT) planned to employ a system of dynamic message signs (DMS) to enhance standard temporary traffic control for lane closures and traffic merges at two bridge construction projects in western Iowa (Adair County and Cass County counties) on I-80 during the 2008 construction season. To evaluate the DMS system’s effectiveness for impacting driver merging actions, the Iowa DOT contracted with Iowa State University’s Center for Transportation Research and Education to perform the evaluation and make recommendations for future use of this system based on the results. Data were collected over four weekends, beginning August 1–4 and ending October 16–20, 2008. Two weekends yielded sufficient data for evaluation, one of transition traffic flow and the other with a period of congestion. For both of these periods, a statistical review of collected data did not indicate a significant impact on driver merging actions when the DMS messaging was activated as compared to free flow conditions with no messaging. Collection of relevant project data proved to be problematic for several reasons. In addition to personnel safety issues associated with the placement and retrieval of counting devices on a high speed roadway, unsatisfactory equipment performance and insufficient congestion to activate the DMS messaging hampered efforts. A review of the data that was collected revealed different results taken by the tube counters compared to the older model plate counters. Although variations were not significant from a practical standpoint, a statistical evaluation showed that the data, including volumes, speeds, and classifications from the two sources were not comparable at a 95% level of confidence. Comparison of data from the Iowa DOT’s automated traffic recorders (ATRs) in the area also suggested variations in results from these data collection systems. Additional comparison studies were recommended.

Many state, county, and local agencies are faced with deteriorating bridge infrastructure composed of a large percentage of relatively short to medium span bridges. In many cases, these older structures are rolled or welded longitudinal steel stringers acting compositely with a reinforced concrete deck. Most of these bridges, although still in service, need some level of strengthening due to increases in legal live loads or loss of capacity due to deterioration. Although these bridges are overstressed in most instances, they do not warrant replacement; thus, structurally efficient but cost-effective means of strengthening needs to be employed. In the past, the use of bolted steel cover plates or angles was a common retrofit option for strengthening such bridges. However, the time and labor involved to attach such a strengthening system can sometimes be prohibitive. This project was funded through the Federal Highway Administration’s Innovative Bridge Research and Construction program. The goal is to retrofit an existing structurally deficient, three-span continuous steel stringer bridge using an innovative technique that involves the application of post-tensioning forces; the post-tensioning forces were applied using fiber reinforced polymer post-tensioning bars. When compared to other strengthening methods, the use of carbon fiber reinforced polymer composite materials is very appealing in that they are highly resistant to corrosion, have a low weight, and have a high tensile strength. Before the post-tensioning system was installed, a diagnostic load test was conducted on the subject bridge to establish a baseline behavior of the unstrengthened bridge. During the process of installing the post-tensioning hardware and stressing the system, both the bridge and the post-tensioning system were monitored. The installation of the hardware was followed by a follow-up diagnostic load test to assess the effectiveness of the post-tensioning strengthening system. Additional load tests were performed over a period of two years to identify any changes in the strengthening system with time. Laboratory testing of several typical carbon fiber reinforced polymer bar specimens was also conducted to more thoroughly understand their behavior. This report documents the design, installation, and field testing of the strengthening system and bridge.

This report addresses the field testing and analysis of those results to establish the behavior of the original Clive Road Bridge that carried highway traffic over Interstate 80 (I-80) in the northwest region of Des Moines, Iowa. The bridge was load tested in 1959, shortly after its construction and in 1993, just prior to its demolition. This report presents some of the results from both field tests, finite element predictions of the behavior of aluminum bridge girders, and load distribution studies.

Understanding the basis on which recruiters form hirability impressions for a job applicant is a key issue in organizational psychology and can be addressed as a social computing problem. We approach the problem from a face-to-face, nonverbal perspective where behavioral feature extraction and inference are automated. This paper presents a computational framework for the automatic prediction of hirability. To this end, we collected an audio-visual dataset of real job interviews where candidates were applying for a marketing job. We automatically extracted audio and visual behavioral cues related to both the applicant and the interviewer. We then evaluated several regression methods for the prediction of hirability scores and showed the feasibility of conducting such a task, with ridge regression explaining 36.2% of the variance. Feature groups were analyzed, and two main groups of behavioral cues were predictive of hirability: applicant audio features and interviewer visual cues, showing the predictive validity of cues related not only to the applicant, but also to the interviewer. As a last step, we analyzed the predictive validity of psychometric questionnaires often used in the personnel selection process, and found that these questionnaires were unable to predict hirability, suggesting that hirability impressions were formed based on the interaction during the interview rather than on questionnaire data.

De nombreuses études ont mis en évidence le fait que les individus étaient prêts à commettre des actes discriminatoires pour autant qu'ils puissent les justifier (Crandall & Eshleman, 2003). Nous proposons de contribuer à la compréhension de ce phénomène grâce au concept de désengagement moral pour des actes discriminatoires (DMD). Nous définissons le désengagement moral comme le fait de justifier ses propres actes immoraux de manière à les rendre acceptable. Ce concept trouve ses origines dans les travaux de Bandura et al. (1996) portant sur les comportements agressifs chez des enfants. Il se compose de huit mécanismes (p.ex. le déplacement de responsabilité). Notre recherche dépasse le cadre théorique développé par Bandura et al. pour inscrire le désengagement moral dans le champ de la discrimination intergroupe. De plus, en conceptualisant le désengagement moral comme une différence individuelle, nous proposons également de présenter les premières étapes du développement d'une échelle permettant de mesurer le DMD. L'échelle de DMD a été développée en trois étapes en suivant la procédure proposée par Hinkin (1998). Tout d'abord, une liste de 72 items a été générée suivant une méthode déductive. Puis, suite à une étude (n = 13) portant sur la cohérence des items vis-à-vis du concept et de ses mécanismes, cette liste a été réduite à 40 items (5 par mécanisme). Enfin, 118 étudiants universitaires ont participé à une étude dans le but de mener des analyses factorielles (exploratoire et confirmatoire), ainsi que de tester les validités convergente, divergente et prédictive de l'échelle. La première partie de cette étude se composait de différentes échelles (p.ex. mesure de personnalité, préjugés anti-immigrés, etc.). La seconde partie de l'étude était une expérience portant sur l'évaluation d'idées de méthodes de sélection (discriminatoire versus méritocratique) des étudiants suisses et étrangers à l'université, ayant pour but de réduire la surpopulation dans les salles de cours. Les résultats obtenus sont prometteurs pour le développement de l'échelle, autant du point de vue de sa structure (p.ex. α = .82) que de sa validité. Par exemple, plus le niveau de DMD des participants était élevé, plus ils étaient favorables à une méthode de sélection discriminatoire des étudiants à l'université. L'ensemble des résultats sera présenté durant la conférence. Nous discuterons également des potentielles contributions de cette échelle pour de futurs projets de recherche. In 1998, three different research groups simultaneously reported increased anxiety-related behavior in tests of conflict in their serotonin 1a (5-HT1a) receptor knockout (KO) line with male mice being more severely affected by 5-HT1a receptor deletion than female KO. Similarly, in the hippocampus, we observed increased dendritic complexity in the stratum radiatum of CA1 pyramidal neurons in male but not in female 5-HT1a receptor KO mice. These observations prompted us to investigate gender- dependent differences of 5-HT1a receptor deletion in hippocampal-related behavioral tasks. Testing our mice in anxiety-related paradigms, we reproduced the original studies showing increased anxiety- related behavior in male 5-HT1a receptor KO mice when compared to male WT mice, but no difference between female 5-HT1a receptor KO and WT mice. Similarly, male 5-HT1a receptor KO mice were impaired in association of aversive stimuli fear conditioning paradigms. We argue that increased dendritic complexity and increased synaptic strength of CA3-CA1 synapses in the stratum radiatum impaired proper signal propagation attributed to overactivation of CA1 pyramidal neurons leading to impaired fear memory of male 5-HT1a receptor KO mice. Similar mechanisms in the ventral hippocampus are likely to have contributed to gender-dependent differences in anxiety-related behavior in our and the original studies from 1998. In this study, we started to shed light on the 5-HT1a receptor downstream signaling pathways involved in dendritogenesis of pyramidal neurons during early postnatal development. We could show that NR2B-containing NMDA receptor during development acts downstream of 5-HT1a receptor and is responsible for increased amount of branching in male 5-HT1a receptor KO mice. Conversely, protein and NR2B mRNA expression was increased in 5-HT1a receptor KO mice at P15. Although the exact signaling cascade of 5-HT1a receptor regulating NR2B-containing NMDA receptor has not been determined, CaMKII is a potential downstream effector to influence transportation and removal of NR2B-containing NMDA receptors to and from the synapse. In contrast, Erk1/2 likely acts downstream of NR2B-containing NMDA receptors and was shown to be sufficient to regulate dendritic branching. Moreover, increased NR2B-containing NMDA receptor mediated cell death via excitotoxicity during development and is likely to be involved in reduced survival of adult born neurons in the hippocampus of 5-HT1a receptor KO male. The convergence of 5-HT1a receptor signaling onto NR2B-containing NMDA receptor signaling enables estrogen to interfere with its downstream pathway via G-protein coupled estrogen receptor 1 activation resulting in normalization of branching and behavior in female 5-HT1a receptor mice. In conclusion, our data strongly suggests a hormone- regulated mechanism that by converging on NR2B-containing NMDA receptor signaling is able to normalize morphology of pyramidal neurons and behavior of female 5-HT1a receptor KO mice. Our findings provide a possible explanation for gender-dependent differences in the occurrence of mental disorders with 5-HT1a receptor abnormalities as a strong predisposing factor. -- En 1998, trois équipes de recherche ont décrit un comportement de type anxieux dans des tests de conflit pour leur souris transgéniques avec une délétion du gène pour le récepteur 5-HT1a de la sérotonine. De plus, les trois groupes rapportent un phénotype plus sévère pour le comportement anxieux chez les souris transgéniques mâles que femelles. Dans l'hippocampe, la région avec la densité de récepteur 5-HT1a la plus élevée dans le télencéphale, nous avons observé dans le stratum radiatum une complexité accrue des arborisations dendritiques des neurones pyramidaux du secteur CA1 chez les souris transgénique mâles mais pas chez les femelles. Cette observation nous a encouragés à initier cette étude sur les différences en fonction du genre utilisant les tests comportementaux en rapport avec les fonctions de l'hippocampe chez les souris déficientes pour le récepteur 5-HT1a.Testant nos souris avec des paradigmes associés à l'anxiété, nous avons reproduit les données originales montrant que les souris transgéniques mâles ont un phénotype plus sévère que les souris mâles sauvages, mais qu'aucune différence n'est observée entre les femelles sauvages et transgéniques. De même, les souris mâles déficientes pour le récepteur 5-HT1a sont handicapées dans les tests de conditionnement au stress avec des stimuli aversifs. Nous faisons l'hypothèse que l'augmentation de la complexité de l'arborisation dendritique et l'augmentation de la force du signal synaptique entres les régions CA3 et CA1 de l'hippocampe dans le stratum radiatum perturbe la propagation du signal nerveux qui conduit à l'hyperactivation des neurones du secteur CA1. Ceci conduit à une mémoire de stress altérée chez les souris mâles déficientes pour le récepteur 5-HT1a. Un mécanisme similaire dans l'hippocampe ventral contribue probablement aux différences en fonction du genre dans les tests pour le comportement de type anxieux qui ont été rapportés dans les études originales de 1998. Les mesures de protéine et de mRNA ont mis en évidence une augmentation de l'expression du récepteur NMDA contenant la sous- unité NR2B dans les souris déficientes pour le récepteur 5-HT1a à P15. Dans les cultures organotypiques d'hippocampe, nous avons commencé à disséquer les messagers secondaires à l'activation du récepteur 5-HT1a qui sont impliqués dans la régulation de la croissance dendritique des neurones pyramidaux pendant la période postnatale précoce. Nous avons démontré que les récepteurs NR2B sont en aval de l'activation du récepteur 5-HT1a et qu'ils sont impliqués dans l'accroissement du nombre de dendrites chez la souris mâle déficiente pour le récepteur 5-HT1a. Bien que la cascade de signalisation du récepteur 5-HT1a pour réguler les récepteurs NMDA contenant le NR2B ne soit pas établie, CaMKII est identifié comme un effecteur potentiel pour altérer le transport du récepteur NMDA à la synapse. D'autre part, Erk1/2 est probablement un messager en aval du NR2B du récepteur NMDA, et a été documenté comme suffisant pour réguler l'arborisation dendritique. L'augmentation de NR2B à la synapse des souris déficientes pour le récepteur 5-HT1a peut conduire à une augmentation de l'excitotoxicité dans les cellules. Nous avons observé une augmentation chez la souris déficiente pour le récepteur 5-HT1a de la mort cellulaire dans des tranches d'hippocampe stimulées, ce qui peut être en relation avec la réduction de la survie des neurones générés dans l'hippocampe de la souris mâle transgénique adulte par rapport à la souris mâle sauvage. De plus, la convergence de la signalisation du récepteur 5-HT1a sur la signalisation de la sous-unité NR2B du récepteur NMDA permet à l'oestrogène d'interférer avec sa voie de signalisation du récepteur de l'oestrogène couplé à une protéine G (GPER-1), ceci permettant à l'oestrogène de réduire la taille de l'arborisation des neurones pyramidaux de CA1 chez la femelle de la souris déficiente pour le récepteur 5-HT1a. En conclusion, nos observations suggèrent fortement qu'un mécanisme hormonal convergeant sur la voie de signalisation de la sous-unité NR2B du récepteur NMDA permet la normalisation de l'exubérance des dendrites des neurones CA1 de l'hippocampe et du comportement des souris femelles déficientes pour le récepteur 5-HT1a. Ceci donne une explication possible pour la différence en fonction du genre dans l'apparition de troubles mentaux avec les variations du récepteur 5-HT1a comme facteur de prédisposition important.

Objective To evaluate the accuracy of computed tomography for local and lymph node staging of Wilms' tumor. Materials and Methods Each case of Wilms' tumor was evaluated for the presence of abdominal lymph nodes by a radiologist. Signs of capsule and adjacent organ invasion were analyzed. Surgical and histopathological results were taken as the gold standard. Results Sensitivity was 100% for both mesenteric and retroperitoneal lymph nodes detection, and specificity was, respectively, 12% and 33%, with positive predictive value of 8% and 11% and negative predictive value of 100%. Signs of capsular invasion presented sensitivity of 87%, specificity of 77%, positive predictive value of 63% and negative predictive value of 93%. Signs of adjacent organ invasion presented sensitivity of 100%, specificity of 78%, positive predictive value of 37% and negative predictive value of 100%. Conclusion Computed tomography tumor showed low specificity and low positive predictive value in the detection of lymph node dissemination. The absence of detectable lymph nodes makes their presence unlikely, and likewise regarding the evaluation of local behavior of tumors.

Virtual learning environments are online spaces where learners interact with other learners, teachers, resources and the environment in itself. Although technology is meant to enhance the learning process, there are important issues regarding pedagogical and organizational aspects that must be addressed. In this paper we review the barriers detected in a virtual university which exclusively uses Internet as the main channel of communication, with no face-to-face requirements exceptthose related to final evaluation.
