Carbon-rich, conjugated organic scaffolding is a popular basis for functional materials, especially for electronic and photonic applications. However, synthetic methods for generating these types of materials lack diversity and, in many cases, efficiency; the insistence of investigators focusing on the properties of the end product, rather than the process in which it was created, has led to the current state of the relatively homogeneous synthetic chemistry of functional organic materials. Because of this, there is plenty of room for improvement at the most basic level. Problems endemic to the preparation of carbon-rich scaffolding can, in many cases, be solved with modern advances in synthetic methodology. We seek to apply this synthesis-focused paradigm to solve problems in the preparation of carbon-rich scaffolds. Herein, the development and utilization of three methodologies: iridium-catalyzed arene C-H borylation; zinc- mediated alkynylations; and Lewis acid promoted Mo nitride-alkyne metathesis, are presented as improvements for the preparation of carbon-rich architectures. In addition, X-ray crystallographic analysis of two classes of compounds are presented. First, an analysis of carbazole-containing arylene ethynylene macrocycles showcases the significance of alkyl chain identity on solid-state morphology. Second, a class of rigid zwitterionic metal-organic compounds display an unusual propensity to crystallize in the absence of inversion symmetry. Hirshfeld surface analysis of these crystalline materials demonstrates that subtle intermolecular interactions are responsible for the overall packing motifs in this class of compounds.

[EN] 3D microfluidic device fabrication methods are normally quite expensive and tedious. In this paper, we present an easy and cheap alternative wherein thin cyclic olefin polymer (COP) sheets and pressure sensitive adhesive(PSA) were used to fabricate hybrid 3D microfluidic structures, by the Origami technique, which enables the fabrication of microfluidic devices without the need of any alignment tool. The COP and PSA layers were both cut simultaneously using a portable, low-cost plotter allowing for rapid prototyping of a large variety of designs in a single production step. The devices were then manually assembled using the Origami technique by simply combining COP and PSA layers and mild pressure. This fast fabrication method was applied, as proof of concept, to the generation of a micromixer with a 3D-stepped serpentine design made of ten layers in less than 8 min. Moreover, the micromixer was characterized as a function of its pressure failure, achieving pressures of up to 1000 mbar. This fabrication method is readily accessible across a large range of potential end users, such as educational agencies (schools,universities), low-income/developing world research and industry or any laboratory without access to clean room facilities, enabling the fabrication of robust, reproducible microfluidic devices.

[EN] This paper describes, for the first time, the use of alginate hydrogels as miniaturised microvalves within microfluidic devices. These biocompatible and biodegradable microvalves are generated in situ and on demand, allowing for microfluidic flow control. The microfluidic devices were fabricated using an origami inspired technique of folding several layers of cyclic olefin polymer followed by thermocompression bonding. The hydrogels can be dehydrated at mild temperatures, 37◦C, to slightly open the microvalve and chemically erased using an ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt (EDTA) solution, to completely open the channel, ensuring the reusability of the whole device and removal of damaged or defective valves for subsequent regeneration.

Nickel-containing catalysts are developed to oligomerize light olefins. Two nickel-containing zincosilicates (Ni-CIT-6 and Ni-Zn-MCM-41) and two nickel-containing aluminosilicates (Ni-HiAl-BEA and Ni-USY) are synthesized as catalysts to oligomerize propylene into C3n (C6 and C9) products. All catalysts oligomerize propylene, with the zincosilicates demonstrating higher average selectivities to C3n products, likely due to the reduced acidity of the Zn heteroatom.

To test whether light alkanes can be incorporated into this oligomerization reaction, a supported homogeneous catalyst is combined with Ni-containing zincosilicates. The homogeneous catalyst is included to provide dehydrogenation/hydrogenation functions. When this tandem catalyst system is evaluated using a propylene/n-butane feed, no significant integration of alkanes are observed.

Ni-containing zincosilicates are reacted with 1-butene and an equimolar propylene/1-butene mixture to study other olefinic feeds. Further, other divalent metal cations such as Mn2+, Co2+, Cu2+, and Zn2+ are exchanged onto CIT-6 samples to investigate stability and potential use for other reactions. Co-CIT-6 oligomerizes propylene, albeit less effectively than Ni-CIT-6. The other M-CIT-6 samples, while not able to oligomerize light olefins, may be useful for other reactions, such as deNOx.

Molecular sieves are synthesized, characterized, and used to catalyze the methanol-to-olefins (MTO) reaction. The Al concentration in SSZ-13 samples is varied to investigate the effect of Al number on MTO reactivity when compared to a SAPO-34 sample with only isolated Si Brønsted acid sites. These SSZ-13 samples display reduced transient selectivity behavior and extended reaction lifetimes as Si/Al increases; attributable to fewer paired Al sites. MTO reactivity for the higher Si/Al SSZ-13s resembles the SAPO-34 sample, suggesting that both catalysts owe their stable reaction behavior to isolated Brønsted acid sites.

Zeolites CHA and RHO are prepared without the use of organic structure-directing agents (OSDAs), dealuminated by steam treatments (500°C-800°C), and evaluated as catalysts for the MTO reaction. The effects of temperature and steam partial pressure during steaming are investigated. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Ar physisorption show that steaming causes partial structural collapse of the zeolite, with degradation increasing with steaming temperature. 27Al MAS NMR spectra of steamed materials reveal the presence of tetrahedral, pentacoordinate, and hexacoordinate aluminum.

Proton forms of as-synthesized CHA (Si/Al=2.4) and RHO (Si/Al=2.8) rapidly deactivate under MTO testing conditions (400°C, atmospheric pressure). CHA samples steamed at 600°C performed best among samples tested, showing increased olefin selectivities and catalyst lifetime. Acid washing these steamed samples further improved activity. Reaction results for RHO were similar to CHA, with the RHO sample steamed at 800°C producing the highest light olefin selectivities. Catalyst lifetime and C2-C3 olefin selectivities increase with increasing reaction temperature for both CHA-type and RHO-type steamed samples.

Ce mémoire décrit les travaux qui ont été réalisés sur la synthèse de l’hodgsonox, un sesquiterpène tricyclique comportant un éther diallylique dans un cycle tétrahydropyranique. Les approches envisagées sont la formation du cycle à cinq puis la formation du tétrahydropyrane et une autre plus convergente qui implique la synthèse des deux cycles en une seule étape. La première partie du mémoire discute de la synthèse d’un précurseur acyclique du cycle à cinq membres, afin de réaliser une réaction de métathèse de fermeture de cycle. Toutefois, les essais n’ont pas été concluants et cette voie a été abandonnée. Dans la deuxième partie, une nouvelle approche impliquant la synthèse d’un bicycle par une réaction de Pauson-Khand a été étudiée. Le précurseur de la réaction de Pauson- Khand a été préparé en 9 étapes (30% de rendement global) à partir du diéthyle tartrate. Le produit de cyclisation a été également obtenu mais il n’a pas été possible par la suite d’introduire le groupement isopropyle. Dans la dernière partie de ce mémoire, les travaux de Lise Brethous sur la synthèse de l’hodgsonox ont été repris. Celle-ci avait montré que le cycle à 5 membres pouvait être obtenu à partir de l’a-acétyl g-butyrolactone et que la formation du bicycle pouvait être réalisée par une réaction catalytique d’insertion d’un composé diazoïque dans un lien O-H. Certaines de ces étapes ont été optimisées et différents tests ont été effectués pour réaliser les dernières étapes de la synthèse de l’hodgosonox, mais sans succès.

A new titanium catalyst easily synthesized from ethylmaltol bidentate chelator ligand was studied in homogeneous and heterogeneous ethylene polymerization. The dichlorobis(3-hydroxy-2-ethyl-4-pyrone)titanium(IV) complex was characterized by 1H and 13C NMR (nuclear magnetic resonance), UV-Vis and elemental analysis. Theoretical study by density functional theory (DFT) showed that the complex chlorines exhibit cis configuration, which is important for the activity in olefin polymerization. The complex was supported by two methods, direct impregnation or methylaluminoxane (MAO) pre-treatment, in five mesoporous supports: MCM-41 (micro and nano), SBA-15 and also the corresponding modified Al species. All the catalytic systems were active in ethylene polymerization and the catalytic activity was strongly influenced by the method of immobilization of the catalyst and the type of support.

In the first chapter of this thesis, published works found in the literature about hexacyclinic acid and FR182877 are reported and commented. A quick summary of the previous work done in the Prunet group is also described. In the second and third chapter, a more detailed account of the work undertaken during this PhD was given. Firstly, syntheses of two ABC tricycles incorporating tert-butyl and (trimethylsilyl)ethyl esters were undertaken. These syntheses include two key steps previously developed in the group, a diastereoselective Michael addition and a Snider cyclisation. Multiple conditions for the hydrolysis of the esters were attempted but none of them gave the desired product. The main part of this work is focused on the synthesis of a CDEF model and in particular about the development of the key step, the formation of a nine-membered ring. Several DEF fragments were synthesised in short synthetic sequences and as single isomers. Six different synthetic pathways were developed in total and a novel method, a Michael/elimination reaction, was found to be a very efficient way to close the desired medium-size ring. From the nine-membered ring, regioselective reduction and palladiumcatalysed allylic substitution led to the formation of the CDF tricycle. Final steps of the synthesis were fruitless and led only to decomposition. A synthesis of a chiral C-ring was also developed during this PhD. II Finally, another project was undertaken, not related to hexacyclinic acid. Methodology developed in the group for the diastereoselective formation of trisubstituted alkenes employing a temporary silicon-tethered ring-closing metathesis was extended to homoallylic alcohols. The first steps of the method were similar to the previous methodology but the end-game had to be modified in favour of an oxidation/reduction sequence to successfully obtain the desired products with the correct geometry. In the fourth chapter, procedures and analytical data for the synthesised compounds previously described are reported.

Este trabalho descreve a síntese de novos derivados de coumarinas 3-substituídas por grupos arilo, etenilarilo e etenil-organometálicos, através de novas metodologias via reacções de Heck e de metátese (Grubbs), com controlo da regioquímica e com significativos rendimentos reaccionais. A aplicação destas metodologias permitiu a síntese dos derivados, 3-fenilcoumarina (131), 3-(4-bromofenil)coumarina, (132), 3-(4-iodofenil)­coumarina (134), 3-(4-nitrofenil)coumarina (136), 3-(4-etilfenil)coumarina (133), 4-(coumarin-3-il)benzaldeído (135), 3-(4-metoxifenil)coumarina (137), (E)-3-acrilato-[4-(coumarin-3-il)fenil] de metilo (138), 6,7-metileno­dioxi-[3-(E)-2'-feniletenil]coumarina (145), 6,7-dimetoxi-[-(E)-2'-fenil­etenil]coumarina (146), 6,7-dimetoxi-[3-(E)-2'-(6'-nitrofenil)etenil]coumarina (147), 4-[2-(E)-(6,7-dimetoxicoumarin-3-il)etenil]benzaldeído (148) e 6,7-dimetoxi-[3-(E)-2'-ferroceniletenil]coumarina (149), dos quais os últimos nove, são compostos novos, identificados e caracterizados pela primeira vez. A deslocalização do sistema de electrões  conjugados, induzida pelos diversos substituintes das coumarinas, foi igualmente avaliada através da espectroscopia de UV/Vis.
