An accumulation of years brings with it an accumulation of experiences. The revision of such experiences usually becomes more recurrent after retirement, a transition time from one period of life to another and, as such, a time in which we, human beings, have a tendency to take stock of our lives. This is actually one of the main issues present in Julian Barnes's last novel The Sense of an Ending (2011). When the main protagonist, a retired man quite comfortable and contented with his present life, receives an unexpected inheritance from the mother of a girlfriend from his university years, he is forced to track down a part of his life that he had left at the back of his mind a long time ago. As he explains his story, the protagonist and narrator of the novel raises a number of questions related to the quality and function of memory as one gets into old age. He experiments the unreliability of memory and questions to what extent memory is constructed through the remembered emotions that invaded him over that episode of his life rather than through the events as they actually took place. On the other hand, the act of revisiting and revising that specific episode, brings with it feelings of guilt and remorse as the protagonist realises that his past acts were not as noble as he remembered them to be. However, these acts are part of the past and they cannot be changed; thus, another question that the novel raises is how to account for those actions of which one does not feel proud and, more importantly, how to manage those bad memories as one gets older.

BACKGROUND: New generation transcatheter heart valves (THV) may improve clinical outcomes of transcatheter aortic valve implantation. METHODS AND RESULTS: In a nationwide, prospective, multicenter cohort study (Swiss Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation Registry, NCT01368250), outcomes of consecutive transfemoral transcatheter aortic valve implantation patients treated with the Sapien 3 THV (S3) versus the Sapien XT THV (XT) were investigated. An overall of 153 consecutive S3 patients were compared with 445 consecutive XT patients. Postprocedural mean transprosthetic gradient (6.5±3.0 versus 7.8±6.3 mm Hg, P=0.17) did not differ between S3 and XT patients, respectively. The rate of more than mild paravalvular regurgitation (1.3% versus 5.3%, P=0.04) and of vascular (5.3% versus 16.9%, P<0.01) complications were significantly lower in S3 patients. A higher rate of new permanent pacemaker implantations was observed in patients receiving the S3 valve (17.0% versus 11.0%, P=0.01). There were no significant differences for disabling stroke (S3 1.3% versus XT 3.1%, P=0.29) and all-cause mortality (S3 3.3% versus XT 4.5%, P=0.27). CONCLUSIONS: The use of the new generation S3 balloon-expandable THV reduced the risk of more than mild paravalvular regurgitation and vascular complications but was associated with an increased permanent pacemaker rate compared with the XT. Transcatheter aortic valve implantation using the newest generation balloon-expandable THV is associated with a low risk of stroke and favorable clinical outcomes. La littérature sur les transitions, en particulier entre l'école obligatoire et l'école professionnelle ou l'école et la vie professionnelle, attire l'attention sur le fait que les parcours personnels sont aujourd'hui moins linéaires. Les transitions professionnelles sont alors décrites comme des moments de difficultés, de ruptures, de vulnérabilité pour les jeunes (Pagnossin & Armi, 2011 ; Rastoldo, Amos & Davaud, 2009). Dans notre domaine en psychologie « socioculturelle », si ces aspects ne sont pas négligés, l'accent est mis sur l'importance du travail de construction de sens par la personne : indépendamment des zigzags de sa vie, l'important est la mise en cohérence, les liens de sens qu'elle peut reconstruire entre les différentes sphères d'expériences qui constituent son identité. Et pour cela, les ressources sociales et institutionnelles (parents, enseignants, groupes de pairs, dispositifs de formation...) mais aussi matérielles et culturelles (chansons, poèmes, films, romans, récits, etc.) peuvent être très importantes (Masdonati & Zittoun, 2012 ; Zittoun, 2012). L'étude-intervention qui sera présentée dans ce document, réalisée auprès d'une classe d'apprentis de l'Ecole technique de Ste-Croix par un groupe d'étudiants en Master en psychologie (UniL), s'inscrit dans un mouvement plus large qui cherche à rendre compte du point de vue des acteurs (Muller Mirza & Perret-Clermont, 2015) liés à la question des transitions des jeunes : il s'agira ici de celui des apprentis eux-mêmes, de manière à explorer ce qu'ils vivent en termes de difficultés, de ressources utilisées et d'apprentissages réalisés, ainsi que celui des personnes qui les accompagnent dans ces processus, les enseignants. Cette étude visait non seulement à recueillir des informations auprès de ces personnes mais également à réaliser un travail de type réflexif, par la mise en place d'activités en classe destinées aux apprentis, basées sur le « récit de vie » comme outil psychologique.

« Les yeux sont du visage humain la partie la plus noble et la plus importante, les yeux sont composés de corps, d'âme et d'esprit, ou plutôt les yeux sont la fenêtre où l'âme et l'esprit viennent se montrer » (Alphonse Karr, 1853). L'oeil est le regard, mais pour l'ophtalmologue il est aussi une fenêtre ouverte et un regard possible sur le reste du corps. Prolongement du système nerveux central en contact direct avec le monde extérieur dont il est l'un des « senseurs » le plus subtil et le plus complexe, il est sujet à des réactions inflammatoires, allergiques et toxiques chez l'enfant et chez l'adulte. Alors que notre environnement visuel change (modification des systèmes d'éclairage domestique dans les villes, écrans, mode de vie et habitudes de travail), que les polluants se multiplient et se combinent et que les environnements climatisés deviennent la règle, le nombre de patients souffrant de pathologies de la surface oculaire atteint 30 % des motifs de nos consultations et le nombre des patients myopes est en hausse. L'oeil est l'un des « senseurs » le plus subtil et le plus complexe Si la surface oculaire peut aussi être le témoin des pathologies systémiques, c'est la rétine qui en est plus fréquemment le reflet. Les atteintes du lit vasculaire, du nerf optique ou de la rétine peuvent être des manifestations de pathologies générales ou d'effets secondaires ou toxiques de médicaments. L'examen du fond d'oeil et la rétinophotographie restent les examens de dépistage de référence en particulier pour la rétinopathie diabétique, véritable fléau mondial et première cause de cécité dans les pays industrialisés chez les jeunes adultes. Mais ce n'est que par la collaboration entre ophtalmologues, médecins traitants et autres spécialistes que les pathologies rétiniennes peuvent être prises en charge de façon optimale pour qu'à des traitements oculaires spécifiques soit associée la prise en charge globale des maladies causales ou interférentes. Au-delà du fond d'oeil, les progrès technologiques contribuent au développement de multiples méthodes d'exploration des différentes structures de l'oeil offrant ainsi la possibilité d'utiliser l'oeil comme témoin de manifestations précoces de maladies neurologiques périphériques ou centrales. L'imagerie cornéenne semble aujourd'hui capable de révéler et de suivre de façon longitudinale la neuropathie diabétique périphérique et il n'est pas impossible que la rétine devienne le site de détection précoce de la maladie d'Alzheimer. Sur le plan de la prise en charge, l'ophtalmologue ne peut pas se contenter de traiter l'oeil, il doit aussi assurer une prise en charge pluridisciplinaire et accompagner le patient qui, perdant la vision, est sujet à la dépression et à la majoration de tout autre handicap. La perte visuelle est le handicap le plus redouté des populations et la perte d'autonomie qu'il induit limite l'observance et le suivi thérapeutique (comparable en termes de gravité ressentie à un « alitement brutal dans les suites d'un AVC »). La médecine personnalisée et les interactions multidisciplinaires prennent ici tout leur sens. Les développements thérapeutiques ont été majeurs ces dernières années et la cécité n'est plus une fatalité, au moins dans certains cas. Mais la rétine étant un tissu nerveux post-mitotique, les traitements et donc le dépistage doivent être précoces pour prévenir la perte visuelle irréversible. Spécifiquement, les espoirs lointains comme la thérapie génique entrent dans les essais cliniques laissant entrevoir la lumière au bout du tunnel. A portée de vue, la rétine artificielle constitue une avancée concrète, encore perfectible mais accessible dès aujourd'hui. Si les progrès sont manifestes dans le domaine de l'ophtalmologie, il reste encore beaucoup à apprendre et à comprendre en particulier dans les mécanismes pathogéniques multifactoriels des maladies oculaires plus fréquentes. Seule une exploration approfondie des maladies humaines pourra nous permettre de mieux appréhender de nouvelles stratégies thérapeutiques. Comme le disait André Isaac (1893-1975), pour voir loin, il faut regarder de près.

There is increasing evidence to support a significant role for chronic non-bacterial, prostatic inflammation in the development of human voiding dysfunction and prostate cancer. Their increased prevalence with age suggests that the decrease of testosterone concentration and/or the ratio of testosterone-to-estradiol in serum may have a role in their development. The main objective of this study was to explore prostatic inflammation and its relationship with voiding dysfunction and prostate carcinogenesis by developing an experimental model. A novel selective estrogen receptor modulator (SERM), fispemifene, was tested for the prevention and treatment of prostatic inflammation in this model. Combined treatment of adult Noble rats with testosterone and estradiol for 3 to 6 weeks induced gradually developing prostatic inflammation in the dorsolateral prostatic lobes. Inflammatory cells, mainly T-lymphocytes, were first seen around capillaries. Thereafter, the lymphocytes migrated into the stroma and into periglandular space. When the treatment time was extended to 13 weeks, the number of inflamed acini increased. Urodynamical recordings indicated voiding dysfunction. When the animals had an above normal testosterone and estradiol concentrations but still had a decreased testosterone-to-estradiol ratio in serum, they developed obstructive voiding. Furthermore, they developed precancerous lesions and prostate cancers in the ducts of the dorsolateral prostatic lobes. Interestingly, inflammatory infiltrates were observed adjacent to precancerous lesions but not in the adjacency of adenocarcinomas suggesting that inflammation has a role in the early stages of prostate carcinogenesis. Fispemifene, a novel SERM tested in this experimental model, showed anti-inflammatory action by attenuating the number of inflamed acini in the dorsolateral prostate. Fispemifene exhibited also antiestrogenic properties by decreasing expression of estrogen-induced biomarkers in the acinar epithelium. These findings suggest that SERMs could be considered as a new therapeutic possibility in the prevention and in the treatment of chronic prostatic inflammation

This paper describes in detail a technique employed to grow quasi-spherical single crystals of noble metals for electrochemical applications, using platinum as an example. The metal beads were formed by melting the extremity of a wire in an oxygen / butane flame. X-ray techniques were used to check the crystallization and to determine the orientation of the crystals. Treatment with a pure hydrogen flame followed by a cooling procedure in a hydrogen / argon atmosphere were used for conditioning the well-defined platinum single crystal surfaces. Finally, electrochemical characterization of the Pt(111), Pt(110) and Pt(100) surfaces was done in diluted sulfuric acid solution in the hydrogen adsorption / desorption potential region.

This work gives a reader basic knowledge about mineralogy and mineral processing. Main focus of this work was on flotation process and pulp electrochemistry on flotation. Three different sulphide poor ores are examined on experimental part. Platinum and palladium were the noble metals, which were contained into studied ores. Electrochemistry of flotation of PGE minerals on sulphide poor ores has been examined only slightly. Bench scale flotation test was used in this study. Chalcopyrite, nickel-pentlandite, pyrite, platinum and pH electrodes were used to investigation of pulp electrochemistry during flotation tests. Effects of grinding media, carbon dioxide atmosphere in grinding and mixture of carbon dioxide and air as flotation gas to PGE flotation and electrochemistry of flotation were studied. Stainless steel grinding media created more oxidising pulp environment to flotation than mild steel grinding media. Concentrate quality improved also with stainless steel grinding media, but the recovery was remarkably poorer, than with mild steel grinding media. Carbon dioxide atmosphere in grinding created very reducing pulp environment, which caused very good concentrate quality. But the recovery was again poorer than with normal mild steel grinding media. Mixture of carbon dioxide and air as flotation gas improved PGE recovery with some ores, but not always. Effect of carbon dioxide to pulp electrochemistry was detected mainly via pH-value.

The combination of cyclic voltammetry and on line mass spectrometry, called differential electrochemical mass spectrometry (DEMS), is already a well established method for on line identification and quantitative detection of the products and intermediates of electrochemical reactions. This article aims to show the principles of the method and how this technique have been used to study electrochemical problems such the electrocatalytic oxidation of organic molecules, as methanol and ethanol, at noble metal electrodes.

Nickel, palladium and platinum micro-crystals were dispersed in films covering a vitreous carbon plate electrode by ion exchange followed by electroreduction of their ions. These modified electrodes were used in the electrocatalytic hydrogenation of several substrates of different classes and their efficiency is reported. A comparison among them was performed based on the structural characteristics of the metals. A modified electrode containing platinum showed to be more efficient than a palladium modified electrode and the one of nickel was the less efficient.

The present manuscript shows the synthesis of nickel hydroxide supported in carbon (Ni(OH)2/C) as a alternative material for catalytic alcohol oxidation in alkaline medium. The Ni(OH)2/C was synthesized in different percentage using a sonic bath. No current densities variation during successive cyclic voltammetry experiments was observed. The Ni(OH)2/C electrodes exhibit a potent and persistent electrocatalytic activity towards the oxidation of different alcohols. In addition, alcohols electooxidation occurs in less positive potential compared with noble metal catalyst.

Automotive catalyst, using in Brazil since 1992, is a essential technology for vehicular emissions control. Noble metals are the active phase of these catalysts, and cerium zirconium mixed oxides (CZ), responsibles for the oxygen storage capacity (OSC), one of the most important aspect for the operational performance of the catalyst. In this context, the oxireduction properties analysis of CZ and Pd/CZ (palladium supported in CZ) system are the objective of this study, as well as, the impact of the thermal aging in the OSC. Aging consisted of treatments at 900 or 1200 °C, for 12 or 36 h, in oxidizing condition.

A hydrometallurgical process applicable to printed circuit boards of small electrical and electronic devices was developed. This involved three leaching steps (60 ºC, 2 h): 6 mol L-1 NaOH, 6 mol L-1 HCl and aqua regia. NaOH removed the resin and flame retardant that covered the circuit boards. HCl dissolved the most electropositive metals and a small amount of copper (~0.3 wt%). Aqua regia dissolved the noble metals. Silver precipitated as AgCl. Gold and platinum were quantitatively extracted with pure methyl-isobutylketone and Alamine 336 (10 % vol. in kerosene), respectively. Slow evaporation of the raffinate crystallized CuCl2.4H2O (89% yield).

É proposto nesse trabalho a utilização do substrato phytagel para a germinação de sementes bacterizadas e visualização de colônias bacterianas. Sementes de limoeiro cravo (Citrus limonia Osbeck) foram inoculadas e monitoradas com rizobactérias utilizando-se tubos de ensaio contendo diferentes substratos para germinação de sementes, quais sejam: Ágar-Ágar, Ágar Noble e Phytagel, onde foram avaliados sete isolados rizobacterianos além de um isolado de Escherichia coli DH5a como controle negativo. Verificou-se que o Phytagel permitiu uma visualização nítida da colonização ao longo das raízes, pelas bactérias, como também proporcionou ser uma boa ferramenta para estudar a colonização via microscopia de varredura. As rizobactérias que melhor colonizaram as raízes e que apresentaram turbidez no ágar, ao seu redor, mostraram-se aderidas à superfície radicular, com colonização eficiente em diferentes sítios ao longo das raízes, quando observadas em alta magnificação.
