Structural monitoring and dynamic identification of the manmade and natural hazard objects is under consideration. Math model of testing object by set of weak stationary dynamic actions is offered. The response of structures to the set of signals is under processing for getting important information about object condition in high frequency band. Making decision procedure into active monitoring system is discussed as well. As an example the monitoring outcome of pillar-type monument is given.

Commemorations are a critical window for exploring the social, political, and cultural trends of a specific time period. Over the past two centuries, the commemorative landscape of Ontario reaffirmed the inclusion/exclusion of particular racial groups. Intended as static markers to the past, monuments in particular visually demonstrated the boundaries of a community and acted as ongoing memorials to existing social structures. Using a specific type of iconography and visual language, the creators of monuments imbued the physical markers of stone and bronze with racialized meanings. As builders were connected with their own time periods and social contexts, the ideas behind these commemorations shifted. Nonetheless, creators were intent on producing a memorial that educated present and future generations on the boundaries of their imagined communities. This dissertation considers the carefully chosen iconographies of Ontarios monuments and how visual symbolism was attached to historical memory. Through the examination of five case studies, this dissertation examines the shifting commemorative landscape of Ontario and how memorials were used to mark the boundaries of communities. By integrating the visual analysis of monuments and related images, it bridges a methodological and theoretical gap between history and art history. This dissertation opens an important dialogue between these fields of study and demonstrates how monuments themselves are critical documents of the past.

As final markers of identity and memory, the tombs of Roman women carried ritual, ideological, and emotional significance. By surveying the funerary monuments of four distinct Roman women, it is possible to reconstruct, at least in part, the exhibited identities of Eumachia, Naevoleia Tyche, Faustina the Elder, Claudia, Amymone, and Postumia Matronilla. Drawing in the viewer to participate in the creation of identity through narrative and contextual relationships, each of the sepulchers solidifies the memories of the deceased women, thereby granting them an immortality of sorts. Engaging with issues of gender, status, the politics of self, propaganda, and regional variation, this paper seeks to explore the nuances of life, death, and identity in the Roman world, with an emphasis on understanding the monuments in their original contexts.

Monuments in our society commemorate historical events, acts or heroes, and educate people about them. Monuments are landmarks that stand out from other buildings to give the city identity and order. This thesis asks how a monument can be designed to project a clear image at a distance and articulate a spatial experience at close range. Two important monuments that form part of the life of America serve as examples: (1) The Statue of Liberty, in the New York Harbor, that has become the visual icon of New York if not the nation and (2) The Holocaust Memorial in Miami Beach, Florida, that leads the visitor through a poignant experience at close range. The second part of the thesis is the design of a monument and museum for The Port of Miami, as part of the Port Boulevard Enhancement Project, sponsored by the Florida Foreign Trade Association, to celebrate the trade pioneers who helped Miami-Dade County achieve its prominence. The site for the monument is located at Biscayne Boulevard and Fifth Street, between Bayside Market Place and The American Airlines Arena in downtown Miami, at the Biscayne Bay.

The objective of this article is to examine the presence of cinema in World Fairs between the 1893 World`s Columbian Exposition in Chicago and 1939 (the New York World`s Fair). As an integral part of a visual culture constructed by these spaces to celebrate capitalism, the trajectory of cinema is identified with these world fairs due to its ability to entertain and, at the same time, to educate. Cinema was established as a means of mass communication during the First World War and afterwards would participate more actively in the symbolic disputes of a world about to enter the second global conflict. It would reach a broader public, becoming the main `showcase` in which nations projected virtues to be celebrated. The new striking visual spectacle assumed, within this context, greater emphasis through films idealized as true cinematographic monuments.

Due to rain events historical monuments exposed to the atmosphere are frequently submitted to wet and dry cycles. During drying periods wetness is maintained in some confined regions and the corrosion product layer, generally denominated patinas, builds up and gets thicker. The aim of this study is to use electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) to investigate the electrochemical behaviour of pure copper coated with two artificial patina layers and submitted either to continuous or to intermittent immersion tests, this latter aiming to simulate wet and dry cycles. The experiments were performed in 0.1 mol dm(-3) NaCl solution and in artificial rainwater containing the most significant pollutants of the city of Sao Paulo. The results of the continuous immersion tests in the NaCl solution have shown that the coated samples behave like a porous electrode with finite pore length. On the other hand, in the intermittent tests a porous electrode response with semi-infinite pore length can be developed. The results were interpreted based on the model of de Levie and a critical comparison with previous interpretations reported in the literature for similar systems is presented. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. Este estudo analisa os processos de circulao e apropriao das representaes sobre os saberes da educao escolarizada difundidos pela Revista de Educao do Esprito Santo, entre os anos de 1934 e 1937. Como referencial terico baseamo- nos em Chartier (1990) acerca do conceito de representao, em Balandier (1982) em relao ao conceito de encenao de poder institudo que assume visibilidade quando circula na Revista, concedendo publicizao aos feitos polticos realizados por dado grupo social, e em Julia (2001), junto ao conceito de cultura escolar. A partir desse arcabouo terico, empreendemos metodologia de pesquisa a partir da anlise histrica da fonte, dialogando, para tanto, com diferentes documentos e registros que configuram uma srie de dados que constituem nossa fonte. Trata-se da anlise das representaes travadas no debate sobre a formao, divulgao e apropriao do conjunto de prticas e saberes pedaggicos dirigido aos professores, por parte de um grupo de intelectuais locais que se apresentava como portador do projeto de modernizao do Esprito Santo inserido no contexto nacional. A Revista de Educao/ES tinha entre seus principais objetivos o de (in)formar os professores, ou seja, enquadrar suas prticas s novas demandas educacionais. Deste modo, a Revista esteve atrelada a um projeto educacional em que os intelectuais corroboravam a ampla circulao de um conjunto de representaes sobre a modernidade, utilizando a Revista como suporte, visto que, desde as capas, so expostos monumentos de modernizao, como os prdios escolares e todo um complexo arranjo de artefatos simblicos, traduzidos muitas vezes em festas e rituais escolares que evocavam um novo tempo para a Educao do Estado, ou seja, fazendo da educao escolarizada um espetculo.

O presente trabalho aborda, sob a perspectiva da geografia cultural renovada, a temtica das formas simblicas no espao urbano, tento como problematizao o estudo de caso das formas simblicas espaciais mais representativas da centralidade na rea Central de Vitria (ES). O interesse sobre o tema est associado o quadro relativamente recente no qual a rea Central de Vitria, sobretudo nas ltimas duas dcadas do sculo XX, passa a sofrer com um intenso processo de descentralizao apresentando como alguns efeitos dessa dinmica no s aparecimento de ncleos secundrios de comrcio e servios afastados da rea Central, quanto tambm exerce um papel fundamental no que se ficou consagrado como crise da rea central. Entretanto, se o quadro acima descrito muito recente, por outro lado, durante o amplo perodo da produo do espao urbano da capital capixaba em que a organizao interna da cidade foi tributria, fundamentalmente, do processo de centralizao, o Centro de Vitria foi o lcus privilegiado de materializao de formas simblicas espaciais tipicamente associadas centralidade intra-urbana tais como edificaes que so smbolos dos poderes poltico, jurdico e econmico; igrejas; os monumentos, dentre outras formas simblicas espaciais. Deste modo, a dissertao pretende investigar o advento da descentralizao sobre as formas simblicas espaciais tipicamente associadas rea Central da capital capixaba, questionando em que medida essas formas permanecem enquanto signos de resistncia simblica a importncia da rea, bem como a natureza da eventual requalificao de significado ao qual foram, eventualmente, submetidas.

Guimares is a world heritage site (UNESCO) since December 2001, and is hosting the European Capital of Culture (ECOC) in 2012. This paper examines the profile, destination image and motivations of tourists visiting Guimares before the cultural event. Based on survey responses from 276 tourists, this study found that tourists arrived to Guimares came from the two most important cities in the northern part of Portugal (Porto and Braga). They are relatively young and well educated compared with the average tourists that visited Portugal. The results suggest that many tourists are aware of the city status as a world heritage site encompassing a historic centre, monuments, and architectural buildings. Further, these perceptions shape the image of Guimares, as the factor analysis indicates that historical background and functionality is the most reliable and valid factor behind the choice of visiting the city. Finally, the main tourists motivation to choose Guimares as theirs destination is educational, rather than recreational as they want to live a learning experience.
