A lacustrine sediment core from Store Koldewey, northeast Greenland, was biogeochemically, biologically and sedimentologically investigated in order to reconstruct long- and short-term climatic and environmental variability. The chronology of the uppermost 189 cm of the record is based on ten 14C AMS age determinations of aquatic mosses. The record covers almost the entire Holocene and revealed changes on multidecadal to centennial scales. Dating of the oldest mosses shows that lacustrine biogenic productivity already began at around 11 cal. kyr BP. This age pre-dates the onset of biogenic productivity in other lakes on Store Koldewey by about 2 kyr. In spite of the early onset of biogenic production organic matter accumulation remained low and minerogenic sedimentation dominated. At about 9.5 cal. kyr BP moss, sulphur, organic carbon and biogenic silica content started to increase, indicating that the environment stabilized and the biogenic production in the lake adjusted to more preferable conditions. Subsequently, the biogenic productivity experienced repeated changes and varied both on long- and short-term scales. The long-term trend shows a maximum during the early Holocene thus responding to increased temperatures during the Holocene Thermal Maximum. Superimposed on the long-term trend, biogenic productivity also experienced repeated short-term fluctuations that match partly the NGRIP temperatures. The most pronounced decrease of biogenic productivity occurred at around 8.2 cal. kyr BP. Perennial lake ice coverage resulting from low temperatures is supposed to have caused decreased lacustrine biogenic productivity. From the middle Holocene to the present repeated decreases of productivity occurred that could be related to periods with severe sea-ice conditions of the East Greenland Current. Besides the dependence on air temperature it therefore demonstrates the sensitivity of lacustrine biogenic productivity in coastal high arctic areas to short-term cold spells that are mediated by the currents emanating from the Arctic Ocean. However, the data also emphasize the difficulties associated with the interpretation of lacustrine records.

Previous pollen analytical studies on sediments from the pleistocene lake basin at Samerberg, situated on the northern edge of the Bavarian Alps (47°45' N, 12°12' E, 607 m a.s.l.) had been performed on samples taken from cores and exposures close to the southern shore of the former lake. After geoelectric and refraction-seismic measurements had shown that the lake basin had been much deeper in its northern part, another core was taken where maximum depth could be expected. The corer penetrated three moraines, two of them lying above pollen-bearing sediments, and one below them, and reached the hard rock (Kössener Kalk) at a depth of 93 m. Two forest phases could be identified by pollen analysis. The pollen record begins abruptly in a forest phase at the end of a spruce-dominated period when fir started to spread (DA 1, DA = pollen zone). Following this, Abies (fir) was the main tree species at Samerberg, Picea being second, and deciduous trees were almost non-existent. First box (Buxus) was of major importance in the fir forests (DA 2), but later on beech (Fagus) and wing-nut (Pterocarya) spread (DA 3). Finally this forest gave way to a spruce forest with pine (DA 4). The beginning and the end of this interglacial cycle are not recorded. Its vegetational development is different from the eemian one known from earlier studies at Samerberg. It is characterized by the occurrence of Abies together with Buxus, Pterocarya and Fagus. A similar association of woody species is known only from the Holsteinian age deposits in an area ranging from England to Poland, though at no other place these species were such important constituents of the vegetation as at Samerberg. Therefore zone 1 to 4 are attributed to the Holsteinian interglacial period. The younger forest phase, separated from the interglacial by a stadial with open vegetation (DA 5), seems to be completely represented, though its sediments are disturbed, apparently by sliding which caused repetition of same-age-sediments in the core (DA 7a, b, c) The vegetational development is simple. A juniper phase (DA 6) was followed by reforestation with spruce, accompanied by some fir (DA 7, 9). Finally pine became the dominant species (DA 9). The simple vegetational development of this younger forest phase does not allow a safe correlation with one of the known pre-eemian interstadials, but for stratigraphical reasons it can be related best to the Dömnitz-interglacial, which among others is also known as Wacken- or Holstein-II-interglacial. Possibly another phase of reforestation is indicated at the end of the following stadial (DA 10). But due to an erosional unconformity nothing than the rise of the juniper curve can be stated. It was only after this sequence of forest phases and periods with open vegetation that glaciers reached the Samerberg area again.

Twenty-three core catcher samples from Site 1166 (Hole 1166A) in Prydz Bay were analyzed for their palynomorph content, with the aims of determining the ages of the sequence penetrated, providing information on the vegetation of the Antarctic continent at this time, and determining the environments under which deposition occurred. Dinocysts, pollen and spores, and foraminiferal test linings were recovered from most samples in the interval from 142.5 to 362.03 meters below seafloor (mbsf). The interval from 142.5 to 258.72 mbsf yielded palynomorphs indicative of a middle-late Eocene age, equivalent to the lower-middle Nothofagidites asperus Zone of the Gippsland Basin of southeastern Australia. The Prydz Bay sequence represents the first well-dated section of this age from East Antarctica. Dinocysts belonging to the widespread "Transantarctic Flora" give a more confident late Eocene age for the interval 142.5-220.5 mbsf. The uppermost two cores within this interval, namely, those from 142.5 and 148.36 mbsf, show significantly higher frequencies of dinocysts than the cores below and suggest that an open marine environment prevailed at the time of deposition. The spore and pollen component may reflect a vegetation akin to the modern rainforest scrubs of Tasmania and New Zealand. Below 267 mbsf, sparse microfloras, mainly of spores and pollen, are equated with the Phyllocladidites mawsonii Zone of southeastern Australia, which is of Turonian to possibly Santonian age. Fluvial to marginal marine environments of deposition are suggested. The parent vegetation from this interval is here described as "Austral Conifer Woodland." The same Late Cretaceous microflora occurs in two of the cores above the postulated unconformity at 267 mbsf. In the core at 249.42 mbsf, the Late Cretaceous spores and pollen are uncontaminated by any Tertiary forms, suggesting that a clast of this older material has been sampled; such a clast may reflect transport by ice during the Eocene. At 258.72 mbsf, Late Cretaceous spores and pollen appear to have been recycled into the Eocene sediments.

Bulk carbon isotope records are an effective chemostratigraphic tool for the middle Miocene because of the large and systematic variation in first-order d13C signals. Bulk d13C measurements support the presence of a hiatus at 305 mbsf in Hole 805B (latest middle Miocene), provisionally located while on board ship using biostratigraphic and magnetostratigraphic events. Records at Holes 805B and 806B show the middle Miocene Monterey carbon isotope excursion although the record at Hole 806B is apparently more stratigraphically continuous. Detailed analysis of multispecies foraminiferal carbon isotope records during the middle Miocene ("Monterey excursion") segment at Hole 806B support the assertion that this carbon isotope excursion comprises mainly between-reservoir effects. The benthic d18O data increase after 15.3 Ma, which we suggest corresponds to the mid-Miocene cooling step/ice volume increase of other authors. Planktonic foraminiferal d18O evidence exists for steepening of the thermocline at 17.4 Ma. A second-order d13C excursion superimposed at 13.8 Ma on the first-order Monterey excursion is associated with a second-order negative d18O excursion.

New K-Ar datings of Meso-Cenozoic volcanites from the Sea of Japan and the Sea of Okhotsk were obtained. They enabled to reason age of different volcanic complexes. Basalts from volcanic edifices of the Sea of Japan Basin were determined as Middle Miocene - Pliocene (13.1-4.5 Ma) in age, which correlates well with geological evolution of the Sea of Japan. New datings for basalts from the continental slope of the South Primorye (11.1 Ma) confirm their age being similar to volcanites from Neogene basalt plateaus of the South Primorye; they are very similar not only in age but also in mineral and chemical compositions. Datings for rocks from the andesite series of the Northern Yamato Rise (24.7, 21.5 Ma) show that they are coeval with volcanites of the trachyandesite complex; this allows to combine them into one Oligocene - Early Miocene complex. In the Sea of Okhotsk datings of volcanite samples from three complexes were obtained: Cretaceous, Paleogene, and Pliocene-Pleistocene. Cretaceous magmatic rocks make part of basements of large rises in the Sea of Okhotsk, and Paleogene and Pliocene - Pleistocene complexes illustrate stages of Cenozoic tectono-magmatic activation of the region.

AMS-14C dated sediment cores from the Ob and Yenisei estuaries and the adjacent inner Kara Sea were investigated to determine the siliclastic and organic carbon fluxes and their relationship to paleoenvironmental changes. The variability of sediment fluxes during Holocene times is related to the post-glacial sea-level rise and changes in river discharge and coastal erosion input. Whereas during the late/middle Holocene most of the terrigenous sediments were deposited in the estuaries and the areas directly off the estuaries, huge amounts of sediments accumulated on the Kara Sea shelf farther north during the early Holocene before about 9 Cal. kyrs. BP. The maximum accumulation at that time is related to the lowered sea level, increased coastal erosion, and increased river discharge due to the final stage of mountain deglaciation of the Putoran Massif. Increased supply of Yenisei-derived material indicated by peak magnetic susceptibility values probably occurred in climate-related pulses culminating near 11, 10, and 9 Cal. kyrs. BP. As sea level rose, the main Holocene depocenter migrated southward. Based on hydrogen index values and n-alkanes, the organic matter is predominantly of terrigenous origin. Maximum accumulation rates of 1.5 to more than 6 g/cm2/y occurred in the early Holocene sediments, suggesting more humid climatic conditions with an increased vegetation cover in the source area at that time. In general, high organic carbon accumulation rates characterize the estuaries and the inner Kara Sea as important sink for terrigenous organic carbon. A high-resolution record of Holocene variability of magnetic susceptibility (MS) in an AMS14C-dated sediment core from the northern Yenisei estuary may indicate natural variability of Arctic climate change and river discharge on a centennial to millenial time scale. Short-term maxima in MS probably related to warmer climate, enhanced precipitation, intensified weathering/erosion and increased river discharge, display a frequency of about 300 to 700 years.

Results of a complex study of the sedimentary cover (continuous seismic profiling and diatom analysis) in the northeastern Sea of Japan including the Bogorov Rise an adjacent part of the Japan Basin and the continental slope, are presented. Two varied-age complexes were distinguished in the sedimentary cover of the continental slope of Primorye: Middle Miocene and Late Miocene - Pleistocene. These complexes formed in a stable tectonic setting with no significant vertical movements. A depression in the acoustic basement is located along the continental slope and it is divided from the Japan Basin by a group of volcanic structures, the most uplifted part of which forms the Bogorov Rise. The depression probably formed before Middle Miocene. In Middle Miocene the Bogorov Rise was already at depths close to modern ones. In the sedimentary cover near the Bogorov Rise buried zones were found. Probably they were channels for gas transportation in pre-Pleistocene. Deformations of sediments that occurred in the beginning of Pleistocene are established in the basin.

Qualitative petrographic study of selected clastic horizons within the Eocene section of Hole 516F has revealed the presence of abundant fine-grained lithic fragments, probably volcanic, along with coarser fragments of quartz and feldspar apparently derived from a nearby plutonic terrain. In detail, poor sorting, presence of graded bedding, and an abundance of clay suggest these are turbidite horizons locally derived from a mixed volcanic/plutonic terrain, possibly with some direct contribution from contemporary volcanic ash falls. A progressive increase in plutonic versus volcanic components with time is, however, more consistent with an erosional origin for most of this material. Unusual euhedral dark biotite is abundant in several of the lower clastic horizons; it is most easily interpreted as microphenocrysts weathered in situ out of alkalic volcanic ash. Biotite separated from Sample 516F-76-4,107-115 cm, has been dated by the K-Ar method at about 46 Ma. Alkaline volcanoes active on the Rio Grande Rise in the middle Eocene would be the most probable source of this ash and would be consistent with other evidence for potassic, alkaline volcanism along the Rio Grande Rise and at the Tristan da Cunha hot spot.

Cores HU82-034-057 and HU84-035-008, Resolution Basin, SE Baffin Shelf, contain 200 and 450 cm, respectively, of sediment that spans the Younger Dryas chron. In both cores the interval is bracketed by 14C dates on foraminifera or molluscs. These sites were close to the margin of the late Wisconsin (Foxe) ice sheet as it flowed toward the Labrador Sea. Prior to 11 ka, both cores record moderate to high accumulations of foraminifera, relatively high del 18O values in planktonic foraminifera, and low values of detrital carbonate. The diatom and percent opal records imply occasional seasonally open water conditions. During part of the Younger Dryas chron both the diatom and opal analyses imply a shutoff of biogenic silica production, suggesting surface water conditions affected by increased sea ice and/or reduced nutrients. In addition, the Younger Dryas interval is marked by an increase in coarse sand and detrital carbonate, a decrease in total organic carbon and foraminifera, and high rates of sediment accumulation. The inferred environment during the Younger Dryas is ice-proximal. In HU82-034-057, the foraminifera and other data suggest a change in conditions during the middle part of the Younger Dryas chron.

During the middle Miocene, Earth's climate transitioned from a relatively warm phase (Miocene climatic optimum) into a colder mode with re-establishment of permanent ice sheets on Antarctica, thus marking a fundamental step in Cenozoic cooling. Carbon sequestration and atmospheric CO2 drawdown through increased terrestrial and/or marine productivity have been proposed as the main drivers of this fundamental transition. We integrate high-resolution (1-3 k.y.) benthic stable isotope data with XRF-scanner derived biogenic silica and carbonate accumulation estimates in an exceptionally well-preserved sedimentary archive, recovered at Integrated Ocean Drilling Program Site U1338, to reconstruct eastern equatorial Pacific productivity variations and to investigate temporal linkages between high- and low-latitude climate change over the interval 16-13 Ma. Our records show that the climatic optimum (16.8-14.7 Ma) was characterized by high amplitude climate variations, marked by intense perturbations of the carbon cycle. Episodes of peak warmth at (southern hemisphere) insolation maxima coincided with transient shoaling of the carbonate compensation depth and enhanced carbonate dissolution in the deep ocean. A switch to obliquity-paced climate variability after 14.7 Ma concurred with a general improvement in carbonate preservation and the onset of stepwise global cooling, culminating with extensive ice growth over Antarctica at ~13.8 Ma. We find that two massive increases in opal accumulation at ~14.0 and ~13.8 Ma occurred just before and during the final and most prominent cooling step, supporting the hypothesis that enhanced siliceous productivity in the eastern equatorial Pacific contributed to CO2 drawdown.

At Sites 689 and 690, drilled during ODP (Ocean Drilling Program) Leg 113 on the Maud Rise (southeast Weddell Sea), moderately to well preserved radiolarian assemblages were obtained from continuously recovered upper Oligocene and Neogene sequences. Based on radiolarian investigations, a biostratigraphic zonation for a time interval covering the late Oligocene to the middle Miocene is proposed. The radiolarian zonation comprises 10 zones. Five zones are new, and five zones previously defined by Chen (1975) were modified. The zones and the ranges of the nominate species are directly calibrated with a geomagnetic polarity record. This is the first attempt at a direct correlation of late Oligocene to middle Miocene radiolarian zones with the geomagnetic time scale. Six hiatuses were delineated in the studied upper Oligocene to middle Miocene sections. One major hiatus, spanning ca. 6 m.y., is between the upper Oligocene and the lower Miocene sequences. Another important hiatus separates the lower and middle Miocene sediments. As a base for the biostratigraphic investigations, a detailed taxonomic study of the recovered radiolarian taxa is achieved. Three new radiolarian species that occur in upper Oligocene and lower Miocene sediments are described (Cycladophora antiqua, Cyrtocapsella robusta, and Velicucullus altus).
