This paper describes the implementation of a TMR (Triple Modular Redundant) microprocessor system on a FPGA. The system exhibits true redundancy in that three instances of the same processor system (both software and hardware) are executed in parallel. The described system uses software to control external peripherals and a voter is used to output correct results. An error indication is asserted whenever two of the three outputs match or all three outputs disagree. The software has been implemented to conform to a particular safety critical coding guideline/standard which is popular in industry. The system was verified by injecting various faults into it.

The typical behavior of the relay-without-delay channel under low-density parity-check coding and its multiple-unit generalization, termed the relay array, is studied using methods of statistical mechanics. A demodulate-and- forward strategy is analytically solved using the replica symmetric ansatz which is exact in the system studied at Nishimori's temperature. In particular, the typical level of improvement in communication performance by relaying messages is shown in the case of a small and a large number of relay units. © 2007 The American Physical Society.

The integration of a microprocessor and a medium power stepper motor in one control system brings together two quite different disciplines. Various methods of interfacing are examined and the problems involved in both hardware and software manipulation are investigated. Microprocessor open-loop control of the stepper motor is considered. The possible advantages of microprocessor closed-loop control are examined and the development of a system is detailed. The system uses position feedback to initiate each motor step. Results of the dynamic response of the system are presented and its performance discussed. Applications of the static torque characteristic of the stepper motor are considered followed by a review of methods of predicting the characteristic. This shows that accurate results are possible only when the effects of magnetic saturation are avoided or when the machine is available for magnetic circuit tests to be carried out. A new method of predicting the static torque characteristic is explained in detail. The method described uses the machine geometry and the magnetic characteristics of the iron types used in the machine. From this information the permeance of each iron component of the machine is calculated and by using the equivalent magnetic circuit of the machine, the total torque produced is predicted. It is shown how this new method is implemented on a digital computer and how the model may be used to investigate further aspects of the stepper motor in addition to the static torque.

The matched filter detector is well known as the optimum detector for use in communication, as well as in radar systems for signals corrupted by Additive White Gaussian Noise (A.W.G.N.). Non-coherent F.S.K. and differentially coherent P.S.K. (D.P.S.K.) detection schemes, which employ a new approach in realizing the matched filter processor, are investigated. The new approach utilizes pulse compression techniques, well known in radar systems, to facilitate the implementation of the matched filter in the form of the Pulse Compressor Matched Filter (P.C.M.F.). Both detection schemes feature a mixer- P.C.M.F. Compound as their predetector processor. The Compound is utilized to convert F.S.K. modulation into pulse position modulation, and P.S.K. modulation into pulse polarity modulation. The mechanisms of both detection schemes are studied through examining the properties of the Autocorrelation function (A.C.F.) at the output of the P.C.M.F.. The effects produced by time delay, and carrier interference on the output A.C.F. are determined. Work related to the F.S.K. detection scheme is mostly confined to verifying its validity, whereas the D.P.S.K. detection scheme has not been reported before. Consequently, an experimental system was constructed, which utilized combined hardware and software, and operated under the supervision of a microprocessor system. The experimental system was used to develop error-rate models for both detection schemes under investigation. Performances of both F. S. K. and D.P. S. K. detection schemes were established in the presence of A. W. G. N. , practical imperfections, time delay, and carrier interference. The results highlight the candidacy of both detection schemes for use in the field of digital data communication and, in particular, the D.P.S.K. detection scheme, which performed very close to optimum in a background of A.W.G.N.

Computer programs have been developed to enable the coordination of fuses and overcurrent relays for radial power systems under estimated fault current conditions. The grading curves for these protection devices can be produced on a graphics terminal and a hard copy can be obtained. Additional programs have also been developed which could be used to assess the validity of relay settings (obtained under the above conditions) when the transient effect is included. Modelling of a current transformer is included because transformer saturation may occur if the fault current is high, and hence the secondary current is distorted. Experiments were carried out to confirm that distorted currents will affect the relay operating time, and it is shown that if the relay current contains only a small percentage of harmonic distortion, the relay operating time is increased. System equations were arranged to enable the model to predict fault currents with a generator transformer incorporated in the system, and also to include the effect of circuit breaker opening, arcing resistance, and earthing resistance. A fictitious field winding was included to enable more accurate prediction of fault currents when the system is operating at both lagging and leading power factors prior to the occurrence of the fault.

Residual current-operated circuit-breakers (RCCBs) have proved useful devices for the protection of both human beings against ventricular fibrillation and installations against fire. Although they work well with sinusoidal waveforms, there is little published information on their characteristics. Due to shunt connected non-linear devices, not the least of which is the use of power electronic equipment, the supply is distorted. Consequently, RCCBs as well as other protection relays are subject to non-sinusoidal current waveforms. Recent studies showed that RCCBs are greatly affected by harmonics, however the reasons for this are not clear. A literature search has also shown that there are inconsistencies in the analysis of the effect of harmonics on protection relays. In this work, the way RCCBs operate is examined, then a model is built with the aim of assessing the effect of non-sinusoidal current on RCCBs. Tests are then carried out on a number of RCCBs and these, when compared with the results from the model showed good correlation. In addition, the model also enables us to explain the RCCBs characteristics for pure sinusoidal current. In the model developed, various parameters are evaluated but special attention is paid to the instantaneous value of the current and the tripping mechanism movement. A similar assessment method is then used to assess the effect of harmonics on two types of protection relay, the electromechanical instantaneous relay and time overcurrent relay. A model is built for each of them which is then simulated on the computer. Tests results compare well with the simulation results, and thus the model developed can be used to explain the relays behaviour in a harmonics environment. The author's models, analysis and tests show that RCCBs and protection relays are affected by harmonics in a way determined by the waveform and the relay constants. The method developed provides a useful tool and the basic methodology to analyse the behaviour of RCCBs and protection relays in a harmonics environment. These results have many implications, especially the way RCCBs and relays should be tested if harmonics are taken into account.

Traditional high speed machinery actuators are powered and coordinated by mechanical linkages driven from a central drive, but these linkages may be replaced by independently synchronised electric drives. Problems associated with utilising such electric drives for this form of machinery were investigated. The research concentrated on a high speed rod-making machine, which required control of high inertias (0.01-0.5kgm2), at continuous high speed (2500 r/min), with low relative phase errors between two drives (0.0025 radians). Traditional minimum energy drive selection techniques for incremental motions were not applicable to continuous applications which require negligible energy dissipation. New selection techniques were developed. A brushless configuration constant enabled the comparison between seven different servo systems; the rate earth brushless drives had the best power rates which is a performance measure. Simulation was used to review control strategies, such that a microprocessor controller with a proportional velocity loop within a proportional position loop with velocity feedforward was designed. Local control schemes were investigated as means of reducing relative errors between drives: the slave of a master/slave scheme compensates for the master's errors: the matched scheme has drives with similar absolute errors so the relative error is minimised, and the feedforward scheme minimises error by adding compensation from previous knowledge. Simulation gave an approximate velocity loop bandwidth and position loop gain required to meet the specification. Theoretical limits for these parameters were defined in terms of digital sampling delays, quantisation, and system phase shifts. Performance degradation due to mechanical backlash was evaluated. Thus any drive could be checked to ensure that the performance specification could be realised. A two drive demonstrator was commissioned with 0.01kgm2 loads. By use of simulation the performance of one drive was improved by increasing the velocity loop bandwidth fourfold. With the master/slave scheme relative errors were within 0.0024 radians at a constant 2500 r/min for two 0.01 kgm^2 loads.

The explosive growth in microprocessor technology and the increasing use of computers to store information has increased the demand for data communication channels. Because of this, data communication to mobile vehicles is increasing rapidly. In addition, data communication is seen as a method of relieving the current congestion of mobile radio telephone bands in the U.K. Highly reliable data communication over mobile radio channels is particularly difficult to achieve, primarily due to fading caused by multipath interference. In this thesis a data communication system is described for use over radio channels impaired by multipath interference. The thesis first describes radio communication in general, and multipath interference In particular. The practical aspects of fading channels are stressed because of their importance in the development of the system. The current U.K. land mobile radio scene is then reviewed, with particular emphasis on the use of existing mobile radio equipment for data communication purposes. The development of the data communication system is then described. This system is microprocessor based and uses an advanced form of automatic request repeat (ARQ) operation. It can be configured to use either existing radio-telephone equipment, totally new equipment specifically designed for data communication, or any combination of the two. Due to its adaptability, the system can automatically optimise itself for use over any channel, even if the channel parameters are changing rapidly. Results obtained from a particular implementation of the system, which is described in full, are presented. These show how the operation of the system has to change to accomodate changes in the channel. Comparisons are made between the practical results and the theoretical limits of the system.

Spread spectrum systems make use of radio frequency bandwidths which far exceed the minimum bandwidth necessary to transmit the basic message information. These systems are designed to provide satisfactory communication of the message information under difficult transmission conditions. Frequency-hopped multilevel frequency shift keying (FH-MFSK) is one of the many techniques used in spread spectrum systems. It is a combination of frequency hopping and time hopping. In this system many users share a common frequency band using code division multiplexing. Each user is assigned an address and the message is modulated into the address. The receiver, knowing the address, decodes the received signal and extracts the message. This technique is suggested for digital mobile telephony. This thesis is concerned with an investigation of the possibility of utilising FH-MFSK for data transmission corrupted by additive white gaussian noise (A.W.G.N.). Work related to FH-MFSK has so far been mostly confined to its validity, and its performance in the presence of A.W.G.N. has not been reported before. An experimental system was therefore constructed which utilised combined hardware and software and operated under the supervision of a microprocessor system. The experimental system was used to develop an error-rate model for the system under investigation. The performance of FH-MFSK for data transmission was established in the presence of A.W.G.N. and with deleted and delayed sample effects. Its capability for multiuser applications was determined theoretically. The results show that FH-MFSK is a suitable technique for data transmission in the presence of A.W.G.N.

This project has been undertaken for Hamworthy Hydraulics Limited. Its objective was to design and develop a controller package for a variable displacement, hydraulic pump for use mainly on mobile earth moving machinery. A survey was undertaken of control options used in practice and from this a design specification was formulated, the successful implementation of which would give Hamworthy an advantage over its competitors. Two different modes for the controller were envisaged. One consisted of using conventional hydro-mechanics and the other was based upon a microprocessor. To meet short term customer prototype requirements the first section of work was the realisation of the hydro-mechanical system. Mathematical models were made to evaluate controller stability and hence aid their design. The final package met the requirements of the specification and a single version could operate all sizes of variable displacement pumps in the Hamworthy range. The choice of controller options and combinations totalled twenty-four. The hydro-mechanical controller was complex and it was realised that a micro-processor system would allow all options to be implemented with just one design of hardware, thus greatly simplifying production. The final section of this project was to determine whether such a design was feasible. This entailed finding cheap, reliable transducers, using mathematical models to predict electro-hydraulic interface stability, testing such interfaces and finally incorporating a micro-processor in an interactive control loop. The study revealed that such a system was technically possible but it would cost 60% more than its hydro-mechanical counterpart. It was therefore concluded that, in the short term, for the markets considered, the hydro-mechanical design was the better solution. Regarding the micro-processor system the final conclusion was that, because the relative costs of the two systems are decreasing, the electro-hydraulic controller will gradually become more attractive and therefore Hamworthy should continue with its development.

A navigation and positioning system for an electric automatic guided vehicle has been designed and implemented on an industrial pallet truck. The system includes an optical sensor mounted on the vehicle, capable of recognizing special markers at a distance of 0.3m. Software implemented in a z-80 microprocessor controls the sensor, performs all data processing and contains the decision making processes necessary for the vehicle to navigate its way to its task location. A second microprocessor is used to control the vehicle's drive motors under instruction from the navigation unit, to accurately position the vehicle at its destination. The sensor reliably recognises markers at vehicle speeds up to 1ms- 1, and the system has been integrated into a multiprocessor controlled wire-guidance system and applied to a prototype vehicle.

This thesis is based upon a case study of the adoption of digital, electronic, microprocessor-based control systems by Albright & Wilson Limited - a UK chemical producer. It offers an explanation of the company's changing technology policy between 1978 and 1981, by examining its past development, internal features and industrial environment. Part One of the thesis gives an industry-level analysis which relates the development of process control technology to changes in the economic requirements of production . The rapid diffusion of microcomputers and other microelectronic equipment in the chemical industry is found to be a response to general need to raise the efficiency of all processes, imposed by the economic recession following 1973. Part Two examines the impaot of these technical and eoonomic ohanges upon Albright & Wilson Limited. The company's slowness in adopting new control technology is explained by its long history in which trends are identified whlich produced theconservatism of the 1970s. By contrast, a study of Tenneco Incorporated, a much more successful adoptor of automating technology, is offered with an analysis of the new technology policy of adoption of such equipment which it imposed upon Albright & Wilson, following the latter's takeover by Tenneco in 1978. Some indications of the consequences by this new policy of widespread adoptions of microprocessor-based control equipment are derived from a study of the first Albright & Wilson plant to use such equipment. The thesis concludes that companies which fail to adopt rapidly the new control technology may not survive in the recessionary environment, the long- established British companies may lack the flexibility to make such necessary changes and that multi-national companies may have an important role jn the planned transfer and adoption of new production technology through their subsidiaries in the UK.

Motivated by the increasing demand and challenges of video streaming in this thesis, we investigate methods by which the quality of the video can be improved. We utilise overlay networks that have been created by implemented relay nodes to produce path diversity, and show through analytical and simulation models for which environments path diversity can improve the packet loss probability. We take the simulation and analytical models further by implementing a real overlay network on top of Planetlab, and show that when the network conditions remain constant the video quality received by the client can be improved. In addition, we show that in the environments where path diversity improves the video quality forward error correction can be used to further enhance the quality. We then investigate the effect of IEEE 802.11e Wireless LAN standard with quality of service enabled on the video quality received by a wireless client. We find that assigning all the video to a single class outperforms a cross class assignment scheme proposed by other researchers. The issue of virtual contention at the access point is also examined. We increase the intelligence of our relay nodes and enable them to cache video, in order to maximise the usefulness of these caches. For this purpose, we introduce a measure, called the PSNR profit, and present an optimal caching method for achieving the maximum PSNR profit at the relay nodes where partitioned video contents are stored and provide an enhanced quality for the client. We also show that the optimised cache the degradation in the video quality received by the client becomes more graceful than the non-optimised system when the network experiences packet loss or is congested.

The performance of wireless networks is limited by multiple access interference (MAI) in the traditional communication approach where the interfered signals of the concurrent transmissions are treated as noise. In this paper, we treat the interfered signals from a new perspective on the basis of additive electromagnetic (EM) waves and propose a network coding based interference cancelation (NCIC) scheme. In the proposed scheme, adjacent nodes can transmit simultaneously with careful scheduling; therefore, network performance will not be limited by the MAI. Additionally we design a space segmentation method for general wireless ad hoc networks, which organizes network into clusters with regular shapes (e.g., square and hexagon) to reduce the number of relay nodes. The segmentation methodworks with the scheduling scheme and can help achieve better scalability and reduced complexity. We derive accurate analytic models for the probability of connectivity between two adjacent cluster heads which is important for successful information relay. We proved that with the proposed NCIC scheme, the transmission efficiency can be improved by at least 50% for general wireless networks as compared to the traditional interference avoidance schemes. Numeric results also show the space segmentation is feasible and effective. Finally we propose and discuss a method to implement the NCIC scheme in a practical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) communications networks. We introduce a general matrix formulation for multiuser channels and analyse the special cases of Multiple-Input Multiple-Output channels, channels with interference and relay arrays under LDPC coding using methods developed for the statistical mechanics of disordered systems. We use the replica method to provide results for the typical overlaps of the original and recovered messages and discuss their implications. The results obtained are consistent with belief propagation and density evolution results but also complement them giving additional insights into the information dynamics of these channels with unexpected effects in some cases.
