OBJETIVO: caracterizar a inserção de egressos do Curso de Fonoaudiologia da Universidade Estadual Paulista (UNESP) - Marília, em Programas de Pós-Graduação (PPG) Stricto Sensu brasileiros. MÉTODO: foram utilizadas listas de graduados e Curriculum Vitae do egresso e do orientador. RESULTADOS: dos 537 formados, 16,57% cursaram/estavam cursando PPG e destes, 98,88% em mestrado e 37,08% também em doutorado. Na grande área de conhecimento, 50% dos egressos de mestrado vincularam-se predominantemente a programas em Ciências da Saúde, 31,80% em Ciências Humanas e 13,64% em Linguística, Letras e Artes. No doutorado, 33, 33% em Ciências Humanas, 30,30% em Ciências da Saúde e em Linguística, Letras e Artes. Quanto à área de conhecimento, predominou a vinculação, no mestrado, de 30,68% em Fonoaudiologia, 28,41% em Educação, 13,64% em Linguística e 9,09% em Medicina I; e, no doutorado, de 33,33% em Educação, 30,30% em Linguística e 9,09% em Fonoaudiologia; 55,68% dissertações e 51,52% teses focalizaram a linguagem. A UNESP predominou com 39,77% no mestrado e 48,48% no doutorado. Predominou a vinculação a Programas com conceito 4 para 52,27% dos egressos do mestrado e 45,45% do doutorado. Quando constou a informação (55,68%), todos receberam fomento. O Teste de Razão de Verossimilhança não indicou diferenças significativas dos percentuais obtidos entre o mestrado e o doutorado. CONCLUSÃO: os resultados superaram os apresentados para o mesmo Estado, mostraram a característica interdisciplinar da Ciência Fonoaudiológica e o predomínio de temática em linguagem.

We demonstrate anisotropic etching of single-layer graphene by thermally activated nickel nanoparticles. Using this technique, we obtain sub-10-nm nanoribbons and other graphene nanostructures with edges aligned along a single crystallographic direction. We observe a new catalytic channeling behavior, whereby etched cuts do not intersect, resulting in continuously connected geometries. Raman spectroscopy and electronic measurements show that the quality of the graphene is resilient under the etching conditions, indicating that this method may serve as a powerful technique to produce graphene nanocircuits with well-defined crystallographic edges.

Minor components (polar components) and the degree of unsaturation of the fatty acids are the main factors responsible for the oxidative stability of bulk oils and emulsions. The isolated effects of these two factors and their interaction were evaluated in oil-in-water emulsions stored at 32 A degrees C. Samples of coconut, olive, soybean, linseed and fish oils, both full and stripped of their polar components, were used to prepare the emulsions (1% w/w). The maximum concentration of hydroperoxide (LOOH(max)) and the rate of formation of hydroperoxides (mu mol L(-1) h(-1)) were used to measure the primary products. Hexanal, propanal and malondialdehyde were used to determine the secondary products of the oxidized emulsions containing polyunsaturated fatty acids. LOOH(max) varied from 0.16 to 12.75 mmol/kg among the samples. The interaction between the polar components and the degree of unsaturation of the fatty acids was significant (p < 0.001) when the hydroperoxides were evaluated. In general, the degree of unsaturation (beta(1)) and the absence of polar components (beta(2)), respectively, represented 30 and 20% of the contribution to increase the mean oxidation, with the interaction (beta(12)) contribution being more sensitive to the rate of formation of hydroperoxides (16%) than to the LOOH(max) (5%). The significance of this interaction suggests that both strategies present synergism and should be applied to improve the oxidative stability of food emulsions.

The effect of increasing the amount of added grain refiner on grain size and morphology has been investigated for a range of hypoeutectic Al-Si alloys. The results show a transition in grain size at a silicon concentration of about 3 wt% in unrefined alloys; the grain size decreasing with silicon content before the transition, and increasing beyond the transition point. A change in morphology also occurs with increased silicon content. The addition of grain refiner leads to greater refinement for silicon contents below the transition point than for those contents above the transition point, while the transition point seems to remain unchanged. The slope of the grain size versus silicon content curve after the transition seems to be unaffected by the degree of grain refinement. The results are related to the competitive processes of nucleation and constitutional effects during growth and their impact on nucleation kinetics. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science S.A. We tested the hypothesis that at the early phase of acute lung injury (ALI) the degree of endothelium injury may predict lung parenchyma remodelling For this purpose, two models of extrapulmonary ALI induced by Escherichia col: lipopolysaccharide (ALI-LPS) or cecal ligation and puncture (ALI-CLP) were developed in mice At day 1, these models had similar degrees of lung mechanical compromise, epithelial damage, and intraperitoneal inflammation, but endothelial lesion was greater in ALI-CLP A time course analysis revealed, at day 7 ALI-CLP had higher degrees of epithelial lesion, denudation of basement membrane, endothelial damage, elastic and collagen fibre content, neutrophils in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF), peritoneal fluid and blood, levels of interleukin-6, KC (murine analogue of IL-8), and transforming growth factor-beta in BALF Conversely, the number of lung apoptotic cells was similar in both groups In conclusion, the intensity of fibroelastogenesis was affected by endothelium injury in addition to the maintenance of epithelial damage and intraperitoneal inflammation. Burke TN, Franc, a FJR, de Meneses SRF, Cardoso VI, Marques AP: Postural control in elderly persons with osteoporosis: Efficacy of an intervention program to improve balance and muscle strength: A randomized controlled trial. Am J Phys Med Rehabil 2010; 89: 549-556. Objective: To assess the efficacy of an exercise program aiming to improve balance and muscular strength, for postural control and muscular strength of women with osteoporosis. Design: Sample consisted of 33 women with osteoporosis, randomized into one of two groups: intervention group, in which exercises for balance and improvement of muscular strength of the inferior members were performed for 8 wks (n = 17, age 72.8 +/- 3.6 yrs); control group, which was women not practicing exercises (n = 16, age 74.4 +/- 3.7 yrs). At baseline and after 8 wks of treatment, postural control was assessed using a force plate (Balance Master, Neurocom), and muscular strength during ankle dorsiflexion, knee extension, and flexion was assessed by dynamometry. Results: Adherence to the program was 82%. When compared with the control group, individuals in the intervention group significantly improved the center of pressure velocity (P = 0.02) in the modified clinical test of sensory interaction for balance test, center of pressure velocity (P < 0.01), and directional control (P < 0.01) in limits of stability test, isometric force during ankle dorsiflexion (P = 0.01), knee extension (P < 0.01), and knee flexion (P < 0.01). Conclusions: Balance and strength exercises are effective in improving postural control and lower-limb strength in elderly women with osteoporosis.

Mutations in PKD1 cause the majority of cases of autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD). Because polycystin 1 modulates cell proliferation, cell differentiation, and apoptosis, its lower biologic activity observed in ADPKD might influence the degree of injury after renal ischemia/reperfusion. We induced renal ischemia/reperfusion in 10- to 12-wk-old male noncystic Pkd1(+/-) and wild-type mice. Compared with wild-type mice, heterozygous mice had higher fractional excretions of sodium and potassium and higher serum creatinine after 48 h. In addition, in heterozygous mice, also cortical damage, rates of apoptosis, and inflammatory infiltration into the interstitium at time points out to 14 d after injury all increased, as well as cell proliferation at 48 h and 7 d. The mRNA and protein expression of p21 was lower in heterozygous mice than wild-type mice at 48 h. After 6 wk, we observed dilated tubules, microcysts, and increased renal fibrosis in heterozygotes. The early mortality of heterozygotes was significantly higher than that of wild-type mice when we extended the duration of ischemia from 32 to 35 min. In conclusion, ischemia/reperfusion induces a more severe injury in kidneys of Pkd1-haploin-sufficient mice, a process that apparently depends on a relative deficiency of p2l activity, tubular dilation, and microcyst formation. These data suggest the possibility that humans with ADPKD from PKD1 mutations may be at greater risk for damage from renal ischemia/reperfusion injury.

Pre-eclampsia (PE) is associated with decreased nitric oxide (NO) formation. However, no previous study has examined whether genetic variations in the endothelial NO synthase (eNOS) affect this alteration. We hypothesized that PE decreases NO formation depending on eNOS polymorphisms. We examined how three eNOS polymorphisms [T-786C, rs2070744; Glu298Asp, rs1799983; 27 bp variable number of tandem repeats (VNTR) in intron 4] affect plasma nitrite concentrations in 205 pregnant women [107 healthy pregnant (HP) and 98 PE]. Genotypes were determined and eNOS haplotypes were inferred using the PHASE 2.1 program. The plasma nitrite concentrations were determined using an ozone-based chemiluminescence assay. The Glu298Asp polymorphism had no effects on the plasma nitrite concentrations. Higher nitrite levels were found in HP women with the CC versus TT genotype for the T-786C polymorphism (277.9 +/- 19.5 versus 140.6 +/- 8.2 nM; P < 0.05). Lower nitrite levels were found in healthy women with the 4a4a versus 4b4b genotype for the VNTR polymorphism (95.1 +/- 3.3 versus 216.1 +/- 16.8 nM; P < 0.05). No effects of genotypes were found in PE women (all P > 0.05). The `C Glu b` haplotype was more frequent in the HP group than in the PE group (20 versus 5; P = 0.0044). This haplotype was associated with higher nitrite concentrations than the other haplotypes in healthy pregnancies (P < 0.05). No differences in nitrite concentrations were found among PE women with different eNOS haplotypes (P > 0.05). These findings indicate that eNOS polymorphisms affect endogenous NO formation in normal pregnancy, but not in PE, and that the `C Glu b` haplotype may protect against the development of PE by increasing endogenous NO formation.

Computational simulations of the title reaction are presented, covering a temperature range from 300 to 2000 K. At lower temperatures we find that initial formation of the cyclopropene complex by addition of methylene to acetylene is irreversible, as is the stabilisation process via collisional energy transfer. Product branching between propargyl and the stable isomers is predicted at 300 K as a function of pressure for the first time. At intermediate temperatures (1200 K), complex temporal evolution involving multiple steady states begins to emerge. At high temperatures (2000 K) the timescale for subsequent unimolecular decay of thermalized intermediates begins to impinge on the timescale for reaction of methylene, such that the rate of formation of propargyl product does not admit a simple analysis in terms of a single time-independent rate constant until the methylene supply becomes depleted. Likewise, at the elevated temperatures the thermalized intermediates cannot be regarded as irreversible product channels. Our solution algorithm involves spectral propagation of a symmetrised version of the discretized master equation matrix, and is implemented in a high precision environment which makes hitherto unachievable low-temperature modelling a reality.

In this paper we propose a second linearly scalable method for solving large master equations arising in the context of gas-phase reactive systems. The new method is based on the well-known shift-invert Lanczos iteration using the GMRES iteration preconditioned using the diffusion approximation to the master equation to provide the inverse of the master equation matrix. In this way we avoid the cubic scaling of traditional master equation solution methods while maintaining the speed of a partial spectral decomposition. The method is tested using a master equation modeling the formation of propargyl from the reaction of singlet methylene with acetylene, proceeding through long-lived isomerizing intermediates. The required solution of a linear system involving the Jacobian matrix is achieved using the GMRES iteration preconditioned using the diffusion approximation to the master equation. The method is tested using a master equation modelling the formation of propargyl from the reaction of singlet methylene with acetylene, proceeding through long lived isomerizing intermediates. An education promoting scientific literacy (SL) that prepares the citizens to a responsible citizenship has persisted as an argument across discussions on curricula design. The ubiquity of science and technology on contemporary societies and the ideological requirement of informed democratic participation led to the identification of relevant categories that drive curriculum reforms towards a humanistic approach of school science. The category ‘Science as culture’ acquires in the current work a major importance: it enlightens the meaning of scientific literacy. Looking closely to the French term, culture scientifique et tecnologique, turns science simultaneously into a cultural object and product that can be both received and worked at different levels and within several approaches by the individuals and the communities. On the other hand, nonformal and informal education spaces gain greater importance. Together with the formal school environment these spaces allow for an enrichment and diversification of learning experiences. Examples of nonformal spaces where animators can develop their work may be science museums or botanical gardens; television and internet can be regarded as informal education spaces. Due to the above mentioned impossibility of setting apart the individual or community-based experiences from Science and Technology (S&T), the work in nonformal and informal spaces sets an additional challenge to the preparation of socio-cultural animators. Socio-scientific issues take, at times, heavily relevance within the communities. Pollution, high tension lines, spreading of diseases, food contamination or natural resources conservation are among the socio-scientific issues that often call upon arguments and emotions. In the context of qualifying programmes on socio-cultural animation (social education and community development) within European Higher Education Area (EHEA) the present study describes the Portuguese framework. The comparison of programmes within Portugal aims to contribute to the discussion on the curriculum design for a socio-cultural animator degree (1st cycle of Bologna process). In particular, this study intends to assess how the formation given complies with enabling animators to work, within multiple scenarios, with communities in situations of socio-scientific relevance. A set of themes, issues and both current and potential fields of action, not described or insufficiently described in literature, is identified and analysed in the perspective of a qualified intervention of animators. One of these examples is thoroughly discussed. Finally, suggestions are made about curriculum reforms in order, if possible, to strongly link the desired qualified intervention with a qualifying formation.
