In this article we consider a control chart based on the sample variances of two quality characteristics. The points plotted on the chart correspond to the maximum value of these two statistics. The main reason to consider the proposed chart instead of the generalized variance |S| chart is its better diagnostic feature, that is, with the new chart it is easier to relate an out-of-control signal to the variables whose parameters have moved away from their in-control values. We study the control chart efficiency considering different shifts in the covariance matrix. In this way, we obtain the average run length (ARL) that measures the effectiveness of a control chart in detecting process shifts. The proposed chart always detects process disturbances faster than the generalized variance |S| chart. The same is observed when the size of the samples is variable, except in a few cases in which the size of the samples switches between small size and very large size.

In this article, we propose new control charts for monitoring the mean vector and the covariance matrix of bivariate processes. The traditional tools used for this purpose are the T (2) and the |S| charts. However, these charts have two drawbacks: (1) the T (2) and the |S| statistics are not easy to compute, and (2) after a signal, they do not distinguish the variable affected by the assignable cause. As an alternative to (1), we propose the MVMAX chart, which only requires the computation of sample means and sample variances. As an alternative to (2), we propose the joint use of two charts based on the non-central chi-square statistic (NCS statistic), named as the NCS charts. Once the NCS charts signal, the user can immediately identify the out-of-control variable. In general, the synthetic MVMAX chart is faster than the NCS charts and the joint T (2) and |S| charts in signaling processes disturbances.

The code STATFLUX, implementing a new and simple statistical procedure for the calculation of transfer coefficients in radionuclide transport to animals and plants, is proposed. The method is based on the general multiple-compartment model, which uses a system of linear equations involving geometrical volume considerations. Flow parameters were estimated by employing two different least-squares procedures: Derivative and Gauss-Marquardt methods, with the available experimental data of radionuclide concentrations as the input functions of time. One such pathway, associated with the food chain, is the grass-animal-man sequence. From the pathways of entry of radionuclides in the human (or animal) body, ingestion is the most important because it is closely related to life-long alimentary (or dietary) habits. Those radionuclides which are able to enter the living cells by either metabolic or other processes give rise to localized doses which can be very high. The evaluation of these internally localized doses is of paramount importance for the assessment of radiobiological risks and radiological protection. The time behavior of trace concentration in organs is the principal input for prediction of internal doses after acute or chronic exposure. The General Multiple-Compartment Model (GMCM) is the powerful and more accepted method for biokinetical studies, which allows the calculation of concentration of trace elements in organs as a function of time, when the flow parameters of the model are known. However, few biokinetics data exist in the literature, and the determination of flow and transfer parameters by statistical fitting for each system is an open problem.Restriction on the complexity of the problem: This version of the code works with the constant volume approximation, which is valid for many situations where the biological half-live of a trace is lower than the volume rise time. Another restriction is related to the central flux model. The model considered in the code assumes that exist one central compartment (e.g., blood), that connect the flow with all compartments, and the flow between other compartments is not included.Typical running time: Depends on the choice for calculations. Using the Derivative Method the time is very short (a few minutes) for any number of compartments considered. Recent studies have shown that adaptive X control charts are quicker than traditional X charts in detecting small to moderate shifts in a process. In this article, we propose a joint statistical design of adaptive X and R charts having all design parameters varying adaptively. The process is subjected to two independent assignable causes. One cause changes the process mean and the other changes the process variance. However, the occurrence of one kind of assignable cause does not preclude the occurrence of the other. It is assumed that the quality characteristic is normally distributed and the time that the process remains in control has exponential distribution. Performance measures of these adaptive control charts are obtained through a Markov chain approach. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The paper describes a novel neural model to estimate electrical losses in transformer during the manufacturing phase. The network acts as an identifier of structural features on electrical loss process, so that output parameters can be estimated and generalized from an input parameter set. The model was trained and assessed through experimental data taking into account core losses, copper losses, resistance, current and temperature. The results obtained in the simulations have shown that the developed technique can be used as an alternative tool to make the analysis of electrical losses on distribution transformer more appropriate regarding to manufacturing process. Thus, this research has led to an improvement on the rational use of energy.

The buffaloes dairy milk production (BDMP) has increased in the last 20 years, mainly for the manufacturing of mozzarella cheese, which is recognized by its high nutritional quality. However, this quality can be affected by several factors i. e. high somatic cells count (SCC) provokes changes in the milk's constituents. As in bovine dairy milk, the SCC is used as diagnostic tool for milk quality; because it enables the diagnosis of sub-clinic mastitis and also allows the selection of individuals genetically resistant to that disease. Based on it, we collected information about SCC and BDMP along the lactation in Murrah breed buffaloes, during the period between 1997 and 2005. Curves were designed to estimate genetic parameters. These parameters were estimated by ordinary test-day models. There were observed variations in the estimated heritability for both characteristics the lowest score for somatic cells count (SSCC) was seen at first month (0.01) and the highest at sixth months (0.29 the genetic correlation between these traits varied from -1 at the 1 and 9(th) months to 0.31 and 0.30 in the2 and 4(th) month of lactation. Phenotypic correlations were all negative (-0.07 in the second month and up to -0.35 in the eighth month of lactation). These results showed that environmental factors are more important than genetics in explain SCC, for this reason, selection for genetic resistance to mastitis in buffalos based in SCC should not be done. In the other hand, negative phenotypic correlations demonstrated that as the SCC increased, the milk production decreased.

High density poly(ethylene) has been submitted to thermal degradation alone, and in the presence of silicoaluminophosphate SAPO-37. The processes were carried out in a reactor connected on line to a gas chromatograph/mass spectrometer in order to analyze the evolved products. Polymer degradation was also evaluated by thermogravimetry, from room temperature until 800 degreesC, under nitrogen dynamic atmosphere, with multiple heating rates. From TG curves, the activation energy related to degradation process was calculated using the Flynn and Wall multiple heating rate kinetic model for pure polymer (PE) and for polymer in the presence of catalyst (PE/S37). SAPO-37 showed good selectivity for low molecular mass hydrocarbons in PE catalytic degradation.

The conditions for the existence of autosolitons were considered in trapped Bose-Einstein condensates with attractive atomic interactions. The expression for the parameters of the autosoliton was derived using the time-dependent variational approach for the nonconservative 3-dimensional Gross-pitaevskii equation and their stability was checked. The results were in agreement with the exact numerical calculations. It was shown that the transition from unstable to stable point solely depends on the magnitude of the parameters.
