Purpose - To develop a systems strategy for supply chain management in aerospace maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO). Design/methodology/approach - A standard systems development methodology has been followed to produce a process model (i.e. the AMSCR model); an information model (i.e. business rules) and a computerised information management capability (i.e. automated optimisation). Findings - The proof of concept for this web-based MRO supply chain system has been established through collaboration with a sample of the different types of supply chain members. The proven benefits comprise new potential to minimise the stock holding costs of the whole supply chain whilst also minimising non-flying time of the aircraft that the supply chain supports. Research limitations/implications - The scale of change needed to successfully model and automate the supply chain is vast. This research is a limited-scale experiment intended to show the power of process analysis and automation, coupled with strategic use of management science techniques, to derive tangible business benefit. Practical implications - This type of system is now vital in an industry that has continuously decreasing profit margins; which in turn means pressure to reduce servicing times and increase the mean time between them. Originality/value - Original work has been conducted at several levels: process, information and automation. The proof-of-concept system has been applied to an aircraft MRO supply chain. This is an area of research that has been neglected, and as a result is not well served by current systems solutions. © Emerald Group Publishing Limited.

The automated transfer of flight logbook information from aircrafts into aircraft maintenance systems leads to reduced ground and maintenance time and is thus desirable from an economical point of view. Until recently, flight logbooks have not been managed electronically in aircrafts or at least the data transfer from aircraft to ground maintenance system has been executed manually. Latest aircraft types such as the Airbus A380 or the Boeing 787 do support an electronic logbook and thus make an automated transfer possible. A generic flight logbook transfer system must deal with different data formats on the input side – due to different aircraft makes and models – as well as different, distributed aircraft maintenance systems for different airlines as aircraft operators. This article contributes the concept and top level distributed system architecture of such a generic system for automated flight log data transfer. It has been developed within a joint industry and applied research project. The architecture has already been successfully evaluated in a prototypical implementation.

This article deals with the activity of defining information of hospital systems as fundamental for choosing the type of information systems to be used and also the organizational level to be supported. The use of hospital managing information systems improves the user`s decision -making process by allowing control report generation and following up the procedures made in the hospital as well.

Objective: Right ventricular failure during left ventricular assist device (WAD) support can result in severe hemodynamic compromise with high mortality. This study investigated the acute effects of cavopulmonary anastomosis on right ventricular loading and WAD performance in a model of severe biventricular failure. Methods: LVAD support was performed by means of centrifugal pump implantation in 14 anesthetized dogs (20-30 kg) with severe biventricular failure obtained by ventricular fibrillation induction. Animals were randomized to be submitted to classical cavopulmonary anastomosis (Glenn shunt) or to control group and were maintained under WAD support for 2 h. Left and right atrial, right ventricular and systemic pressures were monitored, white total pulmonary flow was simultaneously recorded by transonic flowmeters located on the superior vena cava and pulmonary trunk. Blood gas and venous lactate determinations were also obtained. Results: Ventricular fibrillation maintenance resulted in acute WAD performance impairment after 90 min in the control group, while animals with Glenn circuit maintained normal WAD pump flow (55 +/- 13 ml kg(-1) min(-1) vs 21 +/- 4 ml kg(-1) min(-1), p < 0.001) and better peripheral perfusion (blood lactate of 29 +/- 10 pg/ml vs 46 +/- 9 pg/ml, p < 0.001). Left and right atrial pressures did not change significantly, while right ventricular pressure was tower in animals with Glenn circuit (13 +/- 3 mmHg vs 22 +/- 8 mmHg, p = 0.005). Right ventricular unloading with Glenn shunt also resulted in superior total pulmonary flow (59 +/- 13 ml kg(-1) min(-1) vs 17 +/- 3 ml kg(-1) min(-1), p < 0.001). Conclusion: The concomitant use of cavopulmonary anastomosis during LVAD support in a model of severe biventricular failure limited right ventricular overloading and resulted in better hemodynamic performance. Due to the socio-economic inhomogeneity of communities in developing countries, the selection of sanitation systems is a complex task. To assist planners and communities in assessing the suitability of alternatives, the decision support system SANEX™ was developed. SANEX™ evaluates alternatives in two steps. First, Conjunctive Elimination, based on 20 mainly technical criteria, is used to screen feasible alternatives. Subsequently, a model derived from Multiattribute Utility Technique (MAUT) uses technical, socio-cultural and institutional criteria to compare the remaining alternatives with regard to their implementability and sustainability. This paper presents the SANEX™ algorithm, examples of its application in practice, and results obtained from field testing.
