Myocardial perfusion quantification by means of Contrast-Enhanced Cardiac Magnetic Resonance images relies on time consuming frame-by-frame manual tracing of regions of interest. In this Thesis, a novel automated technique for myocardial segmentation and non-rigid registration as a basis for perfusion quantification is presented. The proposed technique is based on three steps: reference frame selection, myocardial segmentation and non-rigid registration. In the first step, the reference frame in which both endo- and epicardial segmentation will be performed is chosen. Endocardial segmentation is achieved by means of a statistical region-based level-set technique followed by a curvature-based regularization motion. Epicardial segmentation is achieved by means of an edge-based level-set technique followed again by a regularization motion. To take into account the changes in position, size and shape of myocardium throughout the sequence due to out of plane respiratory motion, a non-rigid registration algorithm is required. The proposed non-rigid registration scheme consists in a novel multiscale extension of the normalized cross-correlation algorithm in combination with level-set methods. The myocardium is then divided into standard segments. Contrast enhancement curves are computed measuring the mean pixel intensity of each segment over time, and perfusion indices are extracted from each curve. The overall approach has been tested on synthetic and real datasets. For validation purposes, the sequences have been manually traced by an experienced interpreter, and contrast enhancement curves as well as perfusion indices have been computed. Comparisons between automatically extracted and manually obtained contours and enhancement curves showed high inter-technique agreement. Comparisons of perfusion indices computed using both approaches against quantitative coronary angiography and visual interpretation demonstrated that the two technique have similar diagnostic accuracy. In conclusion, the proposed technique allows fast, automated and accurate measurement of intra-myocardial contrast dynamics, and may thus address the strong clinical need for quantitative evaluation of myocardial perfusion.

We present a coarse grained model for computer simulations of lipid mixtures, which we use to study generic mechanisms for the formation of nanoscale membrane structures (lipid rafts). We observe that even a two component system can separate into rafts of finite size, and we study these rafts and other membrane structures in detail. We look at the characteristics of our model that enable these phenomena and how they may relate to lipid-cholesterol or lipid-lipid mixtures. We propose an explanation for our findings using elastic theory to describe a possible mechanism of raft stabilization via curvature differences between coexisting lipid phases and we investigate whether this theory can be used to explain the results of our computer simulations.

Computing the weighted geometric mean of large sparse matrices is an operation that tends to become rapidly intractable, when the size of the matrices involved grows. However, if we are not interested in the computation of the matrix function itself, but just in that of its product times a vector, the problem turns simpler and there is a chance to solve it even when the matrix mean would actually be impossible to compute. Our interest is motivated by the fact that this calculation has some practical applications, related to the preconditioning of some operators arising in domain decomposition of elliptic problems. In this thesis, we explore how such a computation can be efficiently performed. First, we exploit the properties of the weighted geometric mean and find several equivalent ways to express it through real powers of a matrix. Hence, we focus our attention on matrix powers and examine how well-known techniques can be adapted to the solution of the problem at hand. In particular, we consider two broad families of approaches for the computation of f(A) v, namely quadrature formulae and Krylov subspace methods, and generalize them to the pencil case f(A\B) v. Finally, we provide an extensive experimental evaluation of the proposed algorithms and also try to assess how convergence speed and execution time are influenced by some characteristics of the input matrices. Our results suggest that a few elements have some bearing on the performance and that, although there is no best choice in general, knowing the conditioning and the sparsity of the arguments beforehand can considerably help in choosing the best strategy to tackle the problem.

The Curie-Weiss model is defined by ah Hamiltonian according to spins interact. For some particular values of the parameters, the sum of the spins normalized with square-root normalization converges or not toward Gaussian distribution. In the thesis we investigate some correlations between the behaviour of the sum and the central limit for interacting random variables.

To assess the 5-year survival of implant-supported single crowns (SCs) and to describe the incidence of biological, technical, and aesthetic complications. The focused question was: What is the survival rate of implants supporting single crowns and implant-supported crowns with a mean follow-up of 5 years and to which extent do biological, technical, and aesthetic complications occur?
