We report the results of electrical resistivity measurements carried out on well-sintered La0.7Ca0.3MnO3 / Mn3O4 composite samples with almost constant composition of the magnetoresistive manganite phase (La0.7Ca0.3MnO3). A percolation threshold (fc) occurs when the La0.7Ca0.3MnO3 volume fraction is ~ 0.19. The dependence of the electrical resistivity as a function of La0.7Ca0.3MnO3 volume fraction (fLCMO) can be described by percolation-like phenomenological equations. Fitting the conducting regime (fLCMO > fc) by the percolation power law returns a critical exponent t value of 2.0 +/- 0.2 at room temperature and 2.6 +/-0.2 at 5 K. The increase of t is ascribed to the influence of the grain boundaries on the electrical conduction process at low temperature.

We show that tubes of melt cast Bi-2212 used as current leads for LTS magnets can also act as efficient magnetic shields. The magnetic screening properties under an axial DC magnetic field are characterized at several temperatures below the liquid nitrogen temperature (77 K). Two main shielding properties are studied and compared with those of Bi-2223, a material that has been considered in the past for bulk magnetic shields. The first property is related to the maximum magnetic flux density that can be screened, Blim; it is defined as the applied magnetic flux density below which the field attenuation measured at the centre of the shield exceeds 1000. For a cylinder of Bi-2212 with a wall thickness of 5 mm and a large ratio of length over radius, Blim is evaluated to 1 T at T = 10 K. This value largely exceeds the Blim value measured at the same temperature on similar tubes of Bi-2223. The second shielding property that is characterized is the dependence of Blim with respect to variations of the sweep rate of the applied field, dBapp/dt. This dependence is interpreted in terms of the power law E = Ec(J/Jc)^n and allows us to determine the exponent n of this E(J) characteristics for Bi-2212. The characterization of the magnetic field relaxation involves very small values of the electric field. This gives us the opportunity to experimentally determine the E(J) law in an unexplored region of small electric fields. Combining these results with transport and AC shielding measurements, we construct a piecewise E(J) law that spans over 8 orders of magnitude of the electric field.

Magnetic shielding efficiency was measured on high- Tc superconducting hollow cylinders subjected to either an axial or a transverse magnetic field in a large range of field sweep rates, dBapp/dt. The behaviour of the superconductor was modelled in order to reproduce the main features of the field penetration curves by using a minimum number of free parameters suitable for both magnetic field orientations. The field penetration measurements were carried out on Pb-doped Bi-2223 tubes at 77K by applying linearly increasing magnetic fields with a constant sweep rate ranging between 10νTs-1 and 10mTs-1 for both directions of the applied magnetic field. The experimental curves of the internal field versus the applied field, Bin(Bapp), show that, at a given sweep rate, the magnetic field for which the penetration occurs, Blim, is lower for the transverse configuration than for the axial configuration. A power law dependence with large exponent, n′, is found between Blim and dBapp/dt. The values of n′ are nearly the same for both configurations. We show that the main features of the curves B in(Bapp) can be reproduced using a simple 2D model, based on the method of Brandt, involving a E(J) power law with an n-exponent and a field-dependent critical current density, Jc(B), (following the Kim model: Jc = Jc0(1+B/B1)-1). In particular, a linear relationship between the measured n′-exponents and the n-exponent of the E(J) power law is suggested by taking into account the field dependence of the critical current density. Differences between the axial and the transverse shielding properties can be simply attributed to demagnetizing fields. © 2009 IOP Publishing Ltd.

The creep rate of polycrystalline Fe3O4 has been measured as a fonction of stress and oxygen partial pressure in the temperature range 480-1100°C. A regime of power law creep is found at high stress, with a stress exponent of ≈- 3.1 and an activation energy of 264 kJ/mol. A regime of diffusional flow is found at lower stresses and is interpreted as Nabarro-Herring creep. The data for the two regimes are combined to deduce an oxygen diffusion coefficient of ≈-10-5 exp(-264 kJ/mol/RT) m2s-1, with oxygen vacancies suggested as the mobile species. © 1990.

Convergence analysis of consensus algorithms is revisited in the light of the Hilbert distance. The Lyapunov function used in the early analysis by Tsitsiklis is shown to be the Hilbert distance to consensus in log coordinates. Birkhoff theorem, which proves contraction of the Hilbert metric for any positive homogeneous monotone map, provides an early yet general convergence result for consensus algorithms. Because Birkhoff theorem holds in arbitrary cones, we extend consensus algorithms to the cone of positive definite matrices. The proposed generalization finds applications in the convergence analysis of quantum stochastic maps, which are a generalization of stochastic maps to non-commutative probability spaces. ©2010 IEEE.

We explore collective behavior in biological systems using a cooperative control framework. In particular, we study a hysteresis phenomenon in which a collective switches from circular to parallel motion under slow variation of the neighborhood size in which individuals tend to align with one another. In the case that the neighborhood radius is less than the circular motion radius, both circular and parallel motion can occur. We provide Lyapunov-based analysis of bistability of circular and parallel motion in a closed-loop system of self-propelled particles with coupled-oscillator dynamics. ©2007 IEEE.

This paper proposes a design methodology to stabilize isolated relative equilibria in a model of all-to-all coupled identical particles moving in the plane at unit speed. Isolated relative equilibria correspond to either parallel motion of all particles with fixed relative spacing or to circular motion of all particles with fixed relative phases. The stabilizing feedbacks derive from Lyapunov functions that prove exponential stability and suggest almost global convergence properties. The results of the paper provide a low-order parametric family of stabilizable collectives that offer a set of primitives for the design of higher-level tasks at the group level. © 2007 IEEE.

This paper presents a Lyapunov design for the stabilization of collective motion in a planar kinematic model of N particles moving at constant speed. We derive a control law that achieves asymptotic stability of the splay state formation, characterized by uniform rotation of N evenly spaced particles on a circle. In designing the control law, the particle headings are treated as a system of coupled phase oscillators. The coupling function which exponentially stabilizes the splay state of particle phases is combined with a decentralized beacon control law that stabilizes circular motion of the particles. © 2005 IEEE.

In this paper, we survey some recent results on stabilization and disturbance attenuation for nonlinear systems using a dissipativity approach. After reviewing the basic dissipativity concept, we stress the connections between Lyapunov designs and the problem of achieving passivity by feedback. Focusing on physical models, we then illustrate how the design of stabilizing feedback can take advantage of the natural energy balance equation of the system. Here stabilization is viewed as the task of shaping the energy of the system to enforce a minimum at the desired equilibrium. Finally, we show the implications of dissipativity theory as an appropriate framework to study the nonlinear H∞ control problem. © 2002 EUCA.

The problem of robust stabilization of nonlinear systems in the presence of input uncertainties is of great importance in practical implementation. Stabilizing control laws may not be robust to this type of uncertainty, especially if cancellation of nonlinearities is used in the design. By exploiting a connection between robustness and optimality, "domination redesign" of the control Lyapunov function (CLF) based Sontag's formula has been shown to possess robustness to static and dynamic input uncertainties. In this paper we provide a sufficient condition for the domination redesign to apply. This condition relies on properties of local homogeneous approximations of the system and of the CLF. We show that an inverse optimal control law may not exist when these conditions are violated and illustrate how these conditions may guide the choice of a CLF which is suitable for domination redesign. © 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. This paper presents some new criteria for uniform and nonuniform asymptotic stability of equilibria for time-variant differential equations and this within a Lyapunov approach. The stability criteria are formulated in terms of certain observability conditions with the output derived from the Lyapunov function. For some classes of systems, this system theoretic interpretation proves to be fruitful since - after establishing the invariance of observability under output injection - this enables us to check the stability criteria on a simpler system. This procedure is illustrated for some classical examples.

In this book several streams of nonlinear control theory are merged and di- rected towards a constructive solution of the feedback stabilization problem. Analytic, geometric and asymptotic concepts are assembled as design tools for a wide variety of nonlinear phenomena and structures. Di®erential-geometric concepts reveal important structural properties of nonlinear systems, but al- low no margin for modeling errors. To overcome this de¯ciency, we combine them with analytic concepts of passivity, optimality and Lyapunov stability. In this way geometry serves as a guide for construction of design procedures, while analysis provides robustness tools which geometry lacks.

This paper considers channel coding for the memoryless multiple-access channel with a given (possibly suboptimal) decoding rule. Non-asymptotic bounds on the error probability are given, and a cost-constrained random-coding ensemble is used to obtain an achievable error exponent. The achievable rate region recovered by the error exponent coincides with that of Lapidoth in the discrete memoryless case, and remains valid for more general alphabets. © 2013 IEEE.

The control of a class of combustion systems, suceptible to damage from self-excited combustion oscillations, is considered. An adaptive stable controller, called Self-Tuning Regulator (STR), has recently been developed, which meets the apparently contradictory challenge of relying as little as possible on a particular combustion model while providing some guarantee that the controller will cause no harm. The controller injects some fuel unsteadily into the burning region, thereby altering the heat release, in response to an input signal detecting the oscillation. This paper focuses on an extension of the STR design, when, due to stringent emission requirements and to the danger of flame extension, the amount of fuel used for control is limited in amplitude. A Lyapunov stability analysis is used to prove the stability of the modified STR when the saturation constraint is imposed. The practical implementation of the modified STR remains straightforward, and simulation results, based on the nonlinear premixed flame model developed by Dowling, show that in the presence of a saturation constraint, the self-excited oscillations are damped more rapidly with the modified STR than with the original STR. © 2001 by S. AIMS: Our aim was to determine whether alterations in biomechanical properties of human diseased compared to normal coronary artery contribute to changes in artery responsiveness to endothelin-1 in atherosclerosis. MAIN METHODS: Concentration-response curves were constructed to endothelin-1 in normal and diseased coronary artery. The passive mechanical properties of arteries were determined using tensile ring tests from which finite element models of passive mechanical properties of both groups were created. Finite element modelling of artery endothelin-1 responses was then performed. KEY FINDINGS: Maximum responses to endothelin-1 were significantly attenuated in diseased (27±3 mN, n=55) compared to normal (38±2 mN, n=68) artery, although this remained over 70% of control. There was no difference in potency (pD2 control=8.03±0.06; pD2 diseased=7.98±0.06). Finite element modelling of tensile ring tests resulted in hyperelastic shear modulus μ=2004±410 Pa and hardening exponent α=22.8±2.2 for normal wall and μ=2464±1075 Pa and α=38.3±6.7 for plaque tissue and distensibility of diseased vessels was decreased. Finite element modelling of active properties of both groups resulted in higher muscle contractile strain (represented by thermal reactivity) of the atherosclerotic artery model than the normal artery model. The models suggest that a change in muscle response to endothelin-1 occurs in atherosclerotic artery to increase its distensibility towards that seen in normal artery. SIGNIFICANCE: Our data suggest that an adaptation occurs in medial smooth muscle of atherosclerotic coronary artery to maintain distensibility of the vessel wall in the presence of endothelin-1. This may contribute to the vasospastic effect of locally increased endothelin-1 production that is reported in this condition.
