The problem of structural system identification when measurements originate from multiple tests and multiple sensors is considered. An offline solution to this problem using bootstrap particle filtering is proposed. The central idea of the proposed method is the introduction of a dummy independent variable that allows for simultaneous assimilation of multiple measurements in a sequential manner. The method can treat linear/nonlinear structural models and allows for measurements on strains and displacements under static/dynamic loads. Illustrative examples consider measurement data from numerical models and also from laboratory experiments. The results from the proposed method are compared with those from a Kalman filter-based approach and the superior performance of the proposed method is demonstrated. The bipolar point spread function (PSF) corresponding to the Wiener filter tor correcting linear-motion-blurred pictures is implemented in a noncoherent optical processor. The following two approaches are taken for this implementation: (1) the PSF is modulated and biased so that the resulting function is non-negative and (2) the PSF is split into its positive and sign-reversed negative parts, and these two parts are dealt with separately. The phase problem associated with arriving at the pupil function from these modified PSFs is solved using both analytical and combined analytical-iterative techniques available in the literature. The designed pupil functions are experimentally implemented, and deblurring in a noncoherent processor is demonstrated. The postprocessing required (i.e., demodulation in the first approach to modulating the PSF and intensity subtraction in the second approach) are carried out either in a coherent processor or with the help of a PC-based vision system. The deblurred outputs are presented.

A new linear algebraic approach for identification of a nonminimum phase FIR system of known order using only higher order (>2) cumulants of the output process is proposed. It is first shown that a matrix formed from a set of cumulants of arbitrary order can be expressed as a product of structured matrices. The subspaces of this matrix are then used to obtain the parameters of the FIR system using a set of linear equations. Theoretical analysis and numerical simulation studies are presented to characterize the performance of the proposed methods.

It has recently been proposed that the broad spectrum of interannual variability in the tropics with a peak around four years results from an interaction between the linear low-frequency oscillatory mode of the coupled system and the nonlinear higher-frequency modes of the system. In this study we determine the bispectrum of the conceptual model consisting of a nonlinear low-order model coupled to a linear oscillator for various values of the coupling constants.

In this paper, the linear dynamics and active control of a string travelling with uniform velocity is presented. Discrete elastic supports are introduced along the length of the string. Finite element formulation is adopted to obtain the governing equations of motion. The velocity of translation introduces gyroscopic terms in the system equations. The effect of translation and the discrete elastic supports on the free vibration solution is studied. The solution is utilized in actively controlling the string vibrations due to an initial disturbance. The control, affected in modal space, is optimal with respect to a quadratic performance index. Numerical results are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the control strategy in regulating the travelling string vibrations.

The effect of the inclusion of ceramic particles in polythene material on the response to erosion due to impingement by sand particles at three angles is investigated. It is seen that erosion resistance varies with ceramic inclusions. The work also considers the limitations posed by the system in adopting weight change measurements as a measure to follow erosive wear owing to the softer nature of the matrix material. Consequently, the investigation looks at two other experimental parameter, that can readily be measured to quantify erosion. Of the two approaches. the advantages of following wear through measuring linear dimension of the resulting crater is stressed in this work. The study also highlights the problems associated in assessing the depth of the crater as a parameter to express the extent of erosion owing to the phenomenon of material flow suggested and schematically illustrated in the work. Corroborative evidence for this flow behaviour through scanning electron microscopic studies is presented. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

We discuss the properties of a one-dimensional lattice model of a driven system with two species of particles in which the mobility of one species depends on the density of the other. This model was introduced by Lahiri and Ramaswamy (Phys. Rev. Lett., 79, 1150 (1997)) in the context of sedimenting colloidal crystals, and its continuum version was shown to exhibit an instability arising from linear gradient couplings. In this paper we review recent progress in understanding the full phase diagram of the model. There are three phases. In the first, the steady state can be determined exactly along a representative locus using the condition of detailed balance. The system shows phase separation of an exceptionally robust sort, termed strong phase separation, which survives at all temperatures. The second phase arises in the threshold case where the first species evolves independently of the second, but the fluctuations of the first influence the evolution of the second, as in the passive scalar problem. The second species then shows phase separation of a delicate sort, in which long-range order coexists with fluctuations which do not damp down in the large-size limit. This fluctuation-dominated phase ordering is associated with power law decays in cluster size distributions and a breakdown of the Porod law. The third phase is one with a uniform overall density, and along a representative locus the steady state is shown to have product measure form. Density fluctuations are transported by two kinematic waves, each involving both species and coupled at the nonlinear level. Their dissipation properties are governed by the symmetries of these couplings, which depend on the overall densities. In the most interesting case,, the dissipation of the two modes is characterized by different critical exponents, despite the nonlinear coupling.

We describe a System-C based framework we are developing, to explore the impact of various architectural and microarchitectural level parameters of the on-chip interconnection network elements on its power and performance. The framework enables one to choose from a variety of architectural options like topology, routing policy, etc., as well as allows experimentation with various microarchitectural options for the individual links like length, wire width, pitch, pipelining, supply voltage and frequency. The framework also supports a flexible traffic generation and communication model. We provide preliminary results of using this framework to study the power, latency and throughput of a 4x4 multi-core processing array using mesh, torus and folded torus, for two different communication patterns of dense and sparse linear algebra. The traffic consists of both Request-Response messages (mimicing cache accesses)and One-Way messages. We find that the average latency can be reduced by increasing the pipeline depth, as it enables higher link frequencies. We also find that there exists an optimum degree of pipelining which minimizes energy-delay product.

A strongly connected decentralized control system may be made single channel controllable and observable with respect to any channel by decentralized feedbacks. It is noted here that the system example considered by Corfmat and Morse to illustrate this fact is already single channel controllable and observable, with respect to one of the channels. An alternate example which fits into the situation is presented in this item.

Fault-tolerance is due to the semiconductor technology development important, not only for safety-critical systems but also for general-purpose (non-safety critical) systems. However, instead of guaranteeing that deadlines always are met, it is for general-purpose systems important to minimize the average execution time (AET) while ensuring fault-tolerance. For a given job and a soft (transient) error probability, we define mathematical formulas for AET that includes bus communication overhead for both voting (active replication) and rollback-recovery with checkpointing (RRC). And, for a given multi-processor system-on-chip (MPSoC), we define integer linear programming (ILP) models that minimize AET including bus communication overhead when: (1) selecting the number of checkpoints when using RRC, (2) finding the number of processors and job-to-processor assignment when using voting, and (3) defining fault-tolerance scheme (voting or RRC) per job and defining its usage for each job. Experiments demonstrate significant savings in AET.

We consider a time varying wireless fading channel, equalized by an LMS linear equalizer in decision directed mode (DD-LMS-LE). We study how well this equalizer tracks the optimal Wiener equalizer. Initially we study a fixed channel. For a fixed channel, we obtain the existence of DD attractors near the Wiener filter at high SNRs using an ODE (Ordinary Differential Equation) approximating the DD-LMS-LE. We also show, via examples, that the DD attractors may not be close to the Wiener filters at low SNRs. Next we study a time varying fading channel modeled by an Auto-regressive (AR) process of order 2. The DD-LMS equalizer and the AR process are jointly approximated by the solution of a system of ODEs. We show via examples that the LMS equalizer ODE show tracks the ODE corresponding to the instantaneous Wiener filter when the SNR is high. This may not happen at low SNRs.

We consider a time varying wireless fading channel, equalized by an LMS linear equalizer. We study how well this equalizer tracks the optimal Wiener equalizer. We model the channel by an Auto-regressive (AR) process. Then the LMS equalizer and the AR process are jointly approximated by the solution of a system of ODEs (ordinary differential equations). Using these ODEs, the error between the LMS equalizer and the instantaneous Wiener filter is shown to decay exponentially/polynomially to zero unless the channel is marginally stable in which case the convergence may not hold.Using the same ODEs, we also show that the corresponding Mean Square Error (MSE) converges towards minimum MSE(MMSE) at the same rate for a stable channel. We further show that the difference between the MSE and the MMSE does not explode with time even when the channel is unstable. Finally we obtain an optimum step size for the linear equalizer in terms of the AR parameters, whenever the error decay is exponential.

An isothermal section of the phase diagram for (silver + rhodium + oxygen) at T = 1173 K has been established by equilibration of samples representing twelve different compositions, and phase identification after quenching by optical and scanning electron microscopy (s.e.m.), X-ray diffraction (x.r.d.), and energy dispersive analysis of X-rays (e.d.x.), Only one ternary oxide, AgRhO2, was found to be stable and a three phase region involving Ag, AgRhO2 and Rh2O3 was identified. The thermodynamic properties of AgRhO2 were measured using a galvanic cell in the temperature range 980 K to 1320 K. Yttria-stabilized zirconia was used as the solid electrolyte and pure oxygen gas at a pressure of 0.1 MPa was used as the reference electrode. The Gibbs free energy of formation of the ternary oxide from the elements, ΔfGo (AgRhO2), can be represented by two linear equations that join at the melting temperature of silver. In the temperature range 980 K to 1235 K, ΔfGo(AgRhO2)/(J . mol-1) = -249080 + 179.08 T/K (±120). Above the melting temperature of silver, in the temperature range 1235 K to 1320 K, ΔfGo(AgRhO2)/(J . mol-1) = -260400 + 188.24 T/K (±95). The thermodynamic properties of AgRhO2 at T = 298.15 K were evaluated from the high temperature data. The chemical potential diagram for (silver + rhodium + oxygen) at T = 1200 K was also computed on the basis of the results of this study.

A unique code (called Hensel's code) is derived for a rational number by truncating its infinite p-adic expansion. The four basic arithmetic algorithms for these codes are described and their application to rational matrix computations is demonstrated by solving a system of linear equations exactly, using the Gaussian elimination procedure.
