Weed biocontrol relies on host specificity testing, usually carried out under quarantine conditions to predict the future host range of candidate control agents. The predictive power of host testing can be scrutinised directly with Aconophora compressa, previously released against the weed Lantana camara L. (lantana) because its ecology in its new range (Australia) is known and includes the unanticipated use of several host species. Glasshouse based predictions of field host use from experiments designed a posteriori can therefore be compared against known field host use. Adult survival, reproductive output and egg maturation were quantified. Adult survival did not differ statistically across the four verbenaceous hosts used in Australia. Oviposition was significantly highest on fiddlewood (Citharexylum spinosum L.), followed by lantana, on which oviposition was significantly higher than on two varieties of Duranta erecta (‘‘geisha girl’’ and ‘‘Sheena’s gold’’; all Verbenaceae). Oviposition rates across Duranta varieties were not significantly different from each other but were significantly higher than on the two non-verbenaceous hosts (Jacaranda mimosifolia D. Don: Bignoneaceae (jacaranda) and Myoporum acuminatum R. Br.: Myoporaceae (Myoporum)). Production of adult A. compressa was modelled across the hosts tested. The only major discrepancy between model output and their relative abundance across hosts in the field was that densities on lantana in the field were much lower than predicted by the model. The adults may, therefore, not locate lantana under field conditions and/or adults may find lantana but leave after laying relatively few eggs. Fiddlewood is the only primary host plant of A. compressa in Australia, whereas lantana and the others are used secondarily or incidentally. The distinction between primary, secondary and incidental hosts of a herbivore species helps to predict the intensity and regularity of host use by that herbivore. Populations of the primary host plants of a released biological control agent are most likely to be consistently impacted by the herbivore, whereas secondary and incidental host plant species are unlikely to be impacted consistently. As a consequence, potential biocontrol agents should be released only against hosts to which they have been shown to be primarily adapted.

Contains approximately 6800 manuscripts arranged chronologically by year for years 1752-1794. Approximately 100 are letters received or written by Lopez, his partner and father-in-law, Jacob Rodriguez Rivera, members of his family and company, and commercial agents pertaining to business activities and sailing orders for the captains of various ships. Several also refer to personal matters and acquaintances, including a series of six letters from Silas Cooke of White Hall (Middletown), R.I., to Aaron Lopez, asking his aid in returning a run-away slave (1776). The great majority of the collection consists of account records, bills of sale, orders, shipping agreements, lists of sailors on the various ships, repair records and cargo invoices. Of particular interest are a receipt for payment of a half-year's subscription to the "tzedakah" of Congregation Nefutzei Israel, Newport (1755) and several documents that reveal Lopez as a supplier of kosher meat and other religious articles to people in various parts of the colonies, Surinam, and Jamaica. Also included in this group are copies of sailing lists, documents pertaining to Lopez's naturalization which shed light upon the status of a Jew applying for citizenship in Massachusetts and a check to Lopez from the United States government for a loan made during the Revolutionary War (1779).

Detailed high-temperature compression creep experiments on a pure 3 mol% yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia (3YTZ) and 3YTZ doped with 4.8 wt% TiO2 revealed that both materials exhibit a similar transition in stress exponents from n similar to 1 to n similar to 2 with a decrease in stress. The stress exponent of 1 and the inverse grain size dependence p of similar to 3 are consistent with the Coble diffusion creep at high stresses; the increase in stress exponent at low stresses is attributed to an interface-controlled diffusion creep process. Measurements revealed that grain-boundary sliding contributes to >similar to 50% of the total strain in both regions with n similar to 1 and n similar to 2, indicating the operation of the same fundamental deformation process in both regions. The creep data indicate that doping with TiO2 leads to an increase in the grain-boundary diffusion coefficients. The increase observed in the dihedral angle with doping is also consistent with the increase in grain boundary diffusion coefficient and the reported enhanced ductility in such materials.

Incremental diffusion couple experiments are conducted to determine the average interdiffusion coefficient and the intrinsic diffusion coefficients of the species in the Ni6Nb7 (mu phase) in the Ni-Nb system. Further, the tracer diffusion coefficients are calculated from the knowledge of thermodynamic parameters. The diffusion rate of Ni is found to be higher than that of Nb, which indicates higher defect concentration in the Ni sublattice.

In todays era of energy crisis and global warming, hydrogen has been projected as a sustainable alternative to depleting CO2-emitting fossil fuels. However, its deployment as an energy source is impeded by many issues, one of the most important being storage. Chemical hydrogen storage materials, in particular B?N compounds such as ammonia borane, with a potential storage capacity of 19.6 wt?% H2 and 0.145 kg?H?2?L-1, have been intensively studied from the standpoint of addressing the storage issues. Ammonia borane undergoes dehydrogenation through hydrolysis at room temperature in the presence of a catalyst, but its practical implementation is hindered by several problems affecting all of the chemical compounds in the reaction scheme, including ammonia borane, water, borate byproducts, and hydrogen. In this Minireview, we exhaustively survey the state of the art, discuss the fundamental problems, and, where applicable, propose solutions with the prospect of technological applications.

Orthogonal frequency-division multiple access (OFDMA) systems divide the available bandwidth into orthogonal subchannels and exploit multiuser diversity and frequency selectivity to achieve high spectral efficiencies. However, they require a significant amount of channel state feedback for scheduling and rate adaptation and are sensitive to feedback delays. We develop a comprehensive analysis for OFDMA system throughput in the presence of feedback delays as a function of the feedback scheme, frequency-domain scheduler, and rate adaptation rule. Also derived are expressions for the outage probability, which captures the inability of a subchannel to successfully carry data due to the feedback scheme or feedback delays. Our model encompasses the popular best-n and threshold-based feedback schemes and the greedy, proportional fair, and round-robin schedulers that cover a wide range of throughput versus fairness tradeoff. It helps quantify the different robustness of the schedulers to feedback overhead and delays. Even at low vehicular speeds, it shows that small feedback delays markedly degrade the throughput and increase the outage probability. Further, given the feedback delay, the throughput degradation depends primarily on the feedback overhead and not on the feedback scheme itself. We also show how to optimize the rate adaptation thresholds as a function of feedback delay.

Northeast India is one of the most highly seismically active regions in the world with more than seven earthquakes on an average per year of magnitude 5.0 and above. Reliable seismic hazard assessment could provide the necessary design inputs for earthquake resistant design of structures in this' region. In this study, deterministic as well as probabilistic methods have been attempted for seismic hazard assessment of Tripura and Mizoram states at bedrock level condition. An updated earthquake catalogue was collected from various national and international seismological agencies for the period from 1731 to 2011. The homogenization, declustering and data completeness analysis of events have been carried out before hazard evaluation. Seismicity parameters have been estimated using G R relationship for each source zone. Based on the seismicity, tectonic features and fault rupture mechanism, this region was divided into six major subzones. Region specific correlations were used for magnitude conversion for homogenization of earthquake size. Ground motion equations (Atkinson and Boore 2003; Gupta 2010) were validated with the observed PGA (peak ground acceleration) values before use in the hazard evaluation. In this study, the hazard is estimated using linear sources, identified in and around the study area. Results are presented in the form of PGA using both DSHA (deterministic seismic hazard analysis) and PSHA (probabilistic seismic hazard analysis) with 2 and 10% probability of exceedance in 50 years, and spectral acceleration (T = 0. 2 s, 1.0 s) for both the states (2% probability of exceedance in 50 years). The results are important to provide inputs for planning risk reduction strategies, for developing risk acceptance criteria and financial analysis for possible damages in the study area with a comprehensive analysis and higher resolution hazard mapping.

An enantiospecific and diversity oriented approach to a range of functionalized eudesmane, nor-, iso-, and dihydroagarofuran frameworks from (-)-carvone is delineated. The cornerstone of this approach is the installation of the quaternary carbon center through reductive opening of the carvone epoxide and setting-up of RCM reaction to generate the bicyclic eudesmane framework. Various options like carbocation mediated oxycyclization and intramolecular hydroxy directed epoxide opening have been explored for the construction of the bridged tetrahydrofuran moiety. Among the several eudesmane and dihydroagarofurans accessed during the present study, one has been previously elaborated to iso-celorbicol, thus constituting its formal synthesis. Roll waves are frequently observed in overland flow, especially in rill flow, which has an important effect on the development of soil erosion. Using one-dimensional St. Venant equations, this paper investigates the dynamics of periodic roll waves based on Dressler’s and Brock’s work. Under the assumption that the average flow depth equals the uniform flow depth, expressions of the roll-wave speed and roll-wave profile were obtained. Testing with the results observed by Brock (1970) for wave properties shows that these expressions can approximately describe the characteristics of periodic permanent roll waves. Numerical solutions of roll waves under specific conditions are found, which show that when a roll wave appears, the shear stress of flow increases, and the soil erosion accelerates.
