Research Strategy for Nursing and Midwifery in Ireland 2003-2008. Review of Attainments

The Research Strategy for Nursing and Midwifery in Ireland (Department of Health and Children, 2003) was a response to the Commission on Nursing’s (Government of Ireland, 1998: p114) suggestion that a national strategy be developed to guide and support the emerging need for the professions of nursing and midwifery to develop a research base as a fundamental to practice. The Commission itself had found a dearth of published Irish nursing and midwifery research (Government of Ireland, 1998; Condell, 1998) due to a lack of policy direction and funding availability. Turnover in Nursing and Midwifery

The Report of the Commission on Nursing (1998) identified a need to strengthen the workforce planning functions. The Nursing Policy Division of the Department of Health and Children acted on the recommendation by establishing a Study of the Nursing and Midwifery Resource (December 1998). The main objective of the study was to forecast future nursing and midwifery needs which included estimating the turnover rate among registered nurses and midwives employed in the health services. Report of the Working Group on Bacterial Meningitis and Related Conditions

Meningococcal disease is a serious condition with high morbidity and significant mortality. The Department of Health and Children’s Working Group on Bacterial Meningitis and Related Conditions has monitored the epidemiology of Meningococcal disease and in 1997, in its first report, proposed strategies to prevent this infection and its complications. This report has been reviewed and updated and a second report issued in July 1999. This Report describes the epidemiology of Meningococcal disease and includes practical guidance in relation to the management of clusters and chemoprophylaxis. The Report also includes guidelines in relation to the hospital based management of suspected Meningococcal Sepsis/Meningitis and which can be adapted depending on local circumstances Download the Report here

National Health and Lifestyle Survey 1998

Two baseline surveys of health related behaviours among adults and school-going young people were carried out across the Republic of Ireland in 1998. The main aims of the surveys were to: Produce reliable baseline data for a representative cross-section of the Irish  population which will inform the Department of Health and Childrenâ?Ts future policy and programme planning Establish a survey protocol which will enable lifestyle factors to be re-measured so that trends can be identified and changes monitored to assist national and regional setting of priorities in health promotion activities. Statutory Registration for Health and Social Professionals

The Department of Health and Children has committed itself to introducing legislation to provide for the statutory registration of certain health and social care professionals. Against this background, the Department held a series of workshops with the professional bodies to try to reach a consensus on how a system of statutory registration might operate in practice. The workshops were facilitated by the Institute of Public Administration. This document is the culmination of these workshops and it is now being circulated widely to the members of each profession involved for their consideration. Download the Report here

Survey Of Views And Perceptions Of Women Who Attended Symptomatic Breast Clinics

The Department of Health and Children, through the National Cancer Forum, requested the Women's Health Council to conduct research on the views and perceptions of women who attended symptomatic breast care clinics. The aim of this research was to identify how well the current service meets the needs of women, and whether it could be improved. Download the Report here

Report of Working Group set up by the Tanaiste in March 2006 to examine the nature and extent of Haemochromatosis in Ireland and to advise her on the action necessary to address the problems caused by Haemochromatosis

It was agreed at a meeting on 15th February, 2006, between Ms Mary Harney, TD, Tanaiste and Minister for Health and Children and Dr Maurice Manning that a Working Group would be set up to examine all of the issues relating to haemochromatosis in Ireland and to advise her on the actions necessary to address these issues. Dental Treatment Services Scheme (DTSS) - Service Utilisation and Treatment Need (Lot 9)

Dental Treatment Services Scheme (DTSS) – Service Utilisation and Treatment Need (Lot 9) Since 2002, following agreement between the Department of Health and Children and the GMS Payments Board, data from the DTSS payments database has been transferred routinely to the Oral Health Services Research Centre (OHSRC), in University College, Cork for analysis. Queries have been developed in the OHSRC to provide individual level data on the treatments provided to patients, such as examinations, extractions, fillings, scale and polish, removal/amputation of roots, root treatment (upper and lower anterior teeth), radiographs, partial dentures and full dentures, and also data on the characteristics of the dentist providing services. Violence Against Women and Health

Violence Against Women and Health The problem of Violence Against Women (VAW) continues to plague our society causing appalling damage to the lives of thousands of women and children. The immense negative repercussions of being exposed to physical, sexual, or psychological abuse have been well documented worldwide, and are well accepted by both professionals working in this field and society at large. Significant government funding has been directed to this area in order to provide support to women who experience abuse. However, rates of violence remain unacceptably high and services are still inadequate given the magnitude and the complexity of the problem. Click here to download PDF 478kb

National Council on Ageing and Older People - Annual Report 2008

National Council on Ageing and Older People РAnnual Report 2008 2008 was a year of change for the National Council on Ageing and Older People. In January the Government announced the establishment of the Office for Older People at the Department of Health and Children and that the Office would have a key role in progressing the Government̢?Ts agenda for older people. The decision provided that Council staff would be transferred to the Office and that the Council would be replaced by an Advisory Council. Although a sad day for the Council itself, we regard this as a significant step forward in bringing older people̢?Ts issues right to the centre of Government policy-making. Alcohol Marketing, Communications and Sponsorship Codes of Practice

In 2002 the Minister for Health and Children met with representative organisations from the Advertising Industry, the Association of Advertisers in Ireland (AAI), representing advertisers, the Institute of Advertising Practitioners in Ireland (IAPI), representing the advertising agencies and Drinks Industry Group Ireland (DIGI) representing the Alcohol Drinks Industry. The discussions centred on the Ministerâ?Ts concerns about some of the content, weight of exposure and placement of alcohol advertising. In addition, issues were discussed on activities involved in the sponsorship of, and activities surrounding, music and sports events. Download document here

Dept of Health & Children Annual Output Statement 2009 for Health Group of Votes

The overall aim of this Vote Group is to provide health and personal social services to improve the health and well being of the people of Ireland in a manner that promotes better health for every one, fair access, responsive and appropriate care delivery and high performance. The money voted goes to the Department of Health and Children (Vote 39), the Health Service Executive (Vote 40), and the Office of the Minister for Children and Youth Affairs (Vote 41). The Department of Health and Children has responsibility for the overall organisational, legislative, policy and financial accountability framework for the health sector. The Health Service Executive is responsible for the management and delivery of health and personal social services within available resources. The Office of the Minister for Children and Youth Affairs brings together functions relating to children and their well being, along with policy functions on Youth Justice and Early Years Education. This Output Statement is the third of its kind attempting to match outputs and strategic impacts to financial and staffing resources for the financial year. The Irish Study of Sexual Health and Relationships

This study was commissioned by the Department of Health and Children and the Crisis Pregnancy Agency (CPA) in response to a recommendation of the National AIDS Strategy Committee. The findings of this report will be considered by various organisations and will inform the future development and strategic direction of the Crisis Pregnancy Agency’s work in reducing the number of crisis pregnancies.
