A aterosclerose é uma doença caracterizada pela perda de elasticidade e espessamento da parede arterial, sendo iniciada pelo acúmulo de lípides, células inflamatórias e elementos fibrosos na parede das artérias. Esses elementos, ao longo do tempo, darão origem a placas ateroscleróticas ou ateromas que podem por ventura se romper, ocasionando no extravasamento de seu conteúdo lipídico central. Tal situação promoverá a adesão e a agregação plaquetária com conseqüente formação de trombo. As doenças cardiovasculares (DCVs) são a principal causa de morte no mundo, sendo por isso bastante estudadas. Entre os recursos terapêuticos disponíveis se podem citar os antiagregantes plaquetários. A terapia com antiagregantes plaquetários apresenta alguns inconvenientes, que vão desde a ineficácia terapêutica em alguns indivíduos até efeitos adversos deletérios, como hemorragia e transtornos gastrointestinais. É devido a esses fatores, acrescidos à elevada prevalência dessas doenças, que se busca a síntese de novos antiagregantes plaquetários, mais efetivos e menos tóxicos para a prevenção e o tratamento das DCVs, sendo o ácido acetilsalicílico (AAS) um dos fármacos de primeira escolha para tratamento. Nesse projeto, usando a hibridação como estratégia de modificação molecular, planejou-se compostos derivados do AAS espaçados pela subunidade N-acilhidrazona contendo ainda uma subunidade doadora de óxido nítrico representado pelos furoxanos e benzofuroxanos. Esses híbridos constituem uma alternativa à “resistência” ao AAS por atuarem em diferentes vias bioquímicas potenciais para inibição da agregação plaquetária

As formigas cortadeiras são consideradas pragas por causarem diversos prejuízos em áreas agrícolas e, por este motivo, há um crescente interesse em métodos variados de controle destes insetos. Atualmente, existem diversos métodos de controle conhecidos, mas o mais utilizado é o controle químico, que apresenta diferentes estratégias de formulação e modos de aplicação. O principal método químico utilizado são as iscas tóxicas, que tem a melhor eficiência e já são utilizadas em escala comercial. O presente trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar as alterações que ocorrem na dinâmica de colônias de Atta sexdens rubropilosa Forel, 1906 (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) submetidas ao tratamento com iscas tóxicas contendo os ingredientes ativos sulfluramida e hidrametilnona, as quais serão comparadas com uma colônia controle, que receberá isca sem ingrediente ativo. Para isso, foram utilizadas três colônias de A. s. rubropilosa, mantidas em laboratório, com aproximadamente 1000 mL de jardim de fungo cada. Elas foram dispostas em vitrais, interligados a dois potes plásticos, um para a câmara de forrageamento e outro para o lixo. Um dia antes de iniciar o experimento, todo o lixo foi retirado e as colônias foram deixadas sem o fornecimento de alimento. Após 24 horas sem alimentação, as iscas foram oferecidas na câmara de forrageamento de cada colônia. A colônia 1 recebeu 3g de isca sem ingrediente ativo; a colônia 2 recebeu 3g de isca contendo sulfluramida; e a colônia 3 recebeu 3g de isca contendo hidrametilnona. Durante 10 dias, foram avaliados aspectos como carregamento, incorporação e devolução das iscas, alterações comportamentais das operárias classificadas como sintomas de intoxicação, mudanças no aspecto físico dos jardins de fungo, como umidade e aparecimento de fungos contaminantes, e a extinção da colônia. In this work polymeric composites reinforced with cotton fibers, from the textile industry, were developed in order to manufacture printed circuit boards. It was used expanded polystyrene (EPS) as a thermoplastic matrix by melting it. For the obtention of 10% and 15% of fiber volume fraction in cotton fibers composites, it was used wasted cotton fibers as an incentive of recycling and reusing of the domestic and industrial wastes as well as for Expanded Polystyrene(EPS). The mechanical properties of the composites were evaluated by tensile and flexural strength from standardized test methods. Composites were characterized by a Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Thermogravimetry (TG/DTG), Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) and dielectric analysis. s not degraded in the rumen but destroy ureasis. Soybean meal is one of the protein ingredients commonly used in formulations of animal feeds. In the diets of monogastric bran has high protein content provided by a greater separation of soybean hulls. For the ruminant protein value of the meal is lower with the inclusion of soybean hulls to reduce the level of protein. With the increased consumption of meal high protein, due to increases in production of pigs and poultry in recent years, increasing the availability of soybean hulls on the market, this is because soybean hulls is little understood in the feeding of monogastric . In this context, the main objective of this study was to determine the times and temperatures needed to ensure the effective inactivation of ureasis present in the bran and soybean hulls. According to the assessments, to make the determination of temperatures and times required for the inactivation of ureasis present in the bran and soybean hulls are 170 º C and 25 minutes for soybean meal and 140 ° C 10 minutes for soybean hulls, respectively

This paper reports the data on the cuiabana sausage historical aspect, and from the study performed on its technical/sensory characteristics. Four formulations of cuiabana-type sausage were prepared, varying the basic raw material (bovine, chicken and swine meats). For processing these sausages, the raw meats (beef, chicken and pork) were cut into cubes and together with the other ingredients (garlic, cheese, pepper and chives) they were weighed and homogenized. The resulting mixture was refrigerated for 24 hours for intensifying the flavor. Thereafter, it was stuffed into natural casings. These prepared samples were characterized on the physical-chemical profile and on the shelf life under refrigeration for over a seven day-storage in order to assess the microbiological contamination (total coliforms and fecal thermotolerant bacteria), sulphite-reducing clostridium, Salmonella spp., coagulase-positive Staphylococcus), and pH. The sensory evaluation and statistics analysis were carried out on the different types of laboratory- processed cuiabana sausage. Introducing over time changes in the cuiabana sausages formulation are positive factors; therefore, variations in the formulations it is feasible to get a better final product than that original one, and it might be resulted from the market demand.

Many types of food contain ingredients or bioactive compounds that provide health benefits. The collagen is a fibrous protein found in the connective tissue of the body, and it plays a part in the tissues resistance and elasticity. Due to their functional characteristics, this protein has been added into foods in order to achieve therapeutic effects. This paper aimed at showing how the collagen formation occurs, and the beneficial effects of this compound in the organism as well as its characteristics, properties and applications in food.

The consumption of fat related to the incidence of diseases has motivated the development of food with less or even no fat. However, fat is important for the full functioning of the human body and sensory characteristics of food. Therefore, making food with little or no fat and at the same time maintaining the desired quality is a challenge for the industry. Fat substitutes were created to achieve this objective. Fat substitutes can be more effective in their applications when mixtures of different types of them are used. The number and variety of these ingredients are still growing, expanding options of choice when a fat substitute is required in a certain type of food. Considering the importance of fat substitutes nowadays, this paper presents an overview of functions and implications of fats in the human body and food, the terminology used to refer to fat substitutes, the categories of different types of fat substitutes available in the market and their applications in dairy products.

In this work, plasma immersion ion implantation (PIII) treatments of carbon fibers (CFs) were performed in order to induce modifications of chemical and physical properties of the CF surface aimed to improve the performance of thermoplastic composite. The samples to be treated were immersed in nitrogen or air glow discharge plasma and pulsed at −3.0 kV for 2.0, 5.0, 10.0, and 15.0 min. After PIII processing, the specimens were characterized by atomic force microscopy (AFM), scanning electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). After CFs treatments, the CF/Polypropylene (PP) composites were produced by hot pressing method. Surface morphology of as-received CFs exhibited some scratches aligned along the fibers due to the fiber manufacturing process. After both treatments, these features became deeper, and also, a number of small particles nonuniformly distributed on the fiber surface can be observed. These particles are product of CF surface sputtering during the PIII treatment, which removes the epoxy layer that covers as-received samples. AFM analyses of CF samples treated with nitrogen depicted a large increase of the surface roughness (Rrms value approximately six times higher than that of the untreated sample). The increase of the roughness was also observed for samples treated by air PIII. Raman spectra of all samples presented the characteristic D- and G-bands at approximately 1355 and 1582 cm−1, respectively. Analysis of the surface chemical composition provided by the XPS showed that nitrogen and oxygen were incorporated onto the surface. The polar radicals formed on the surface lead to increasing of the CF surface energy. Both the modification of surface roughness and the surface oxidation contributed for the enhancement of CF adhesion to the polymeric matrix. These features were confirmed ...
