A 30-day experiment was conducted to determine the effects of varying feeding rates on the growth of fry of silver dollar, Metynnis schreitmulleri (Ahl). Silver dollar fry with an average initial body weight of 1.100 ± 0.029 g were collected from a local fish breeder and fed a diet (35% protein and 6% fat) at the rate of 3, 6 and 9% of body weight per day in two equal meals. Per cent weight gain increased from 54.54 to 118.18 with increased feeding rates, which were significantly different (p<0.05) from each other. The highest specific growth rate was obtained in the fry fed at 9% body weight per day. In another study for 30 days, the effects of feeding frequency on growth, feed conversion and protein efficiency of silver dollar fry were evaluated. Groups of silver dollar fry with an initial individual weight of 0.700 ± 0.019 g were offered feed continuously for 24 hours during the day or night at different time intervals with varying meal sizes. The night time feeding with two meals gave the lowest weight and length gains (0.985 g and 0.30 cm). The growth rates of fish fed during day with three equal-sized meals are significantly (p<0.05) higher (4.66%) than the other treatments.

The use of PC-based PD6493:1991 fracture assessment procedures has revealed that, under certain circumstances, flaws of different dimensions may be found as being limiting or critical for identical applied conditions. The main causes for multiple solutions are a steep applied stress gradient, residual stress relaxation and flaw re-characterisation. This work uses several case studies to illustrate some of the circumstances under which multiple solutions occurs.

The peel test is commonly used to determine the strength of adhesive joints. In its simplest form, a thin flexible strip which has been bonded to a rigid surface is peeled from the substrate at a constant rate and the peeling force which is applied to the debonding surfaces by the tension in the tape is measured. Peeling can be carried out with the peel angle, i.e. the angle made by the peel force with the substrate surface, from any value above about 10° although peeling tests at 90 and 180° are most common. If the tape is sufficiently thin for its bending resistance to be negligibly small then as well as the debonding or decohesion energy associated with the adhesive in and around the point of separation, the relation between the peeling force and the peeling angle is influenced both by the mechanical properties of the tape and any pre-strain locked into the tape during its application to the substrate. The analytic solution for a tape material which can be idealised as elastic perfectly-plastic is well established. Here, we present a more general form of analysis, applicable in principle to any constitutive relation between tape load and tape extension. Non-linearity between load and extension is of increasing significance as the peel angle is decreased: the model presented is consistent with existing equations describing the failure of a lap joint between non-linear materials. The analysis also allows for energy losses within the adhesive layer which themselves may be influenced by both peel rate and peel angle. We have experimentally examined the application of this new analysis to several specific peeling cases including tapes of cellophane, poly-vinyl chloride and PTFE. © 2005 Elsevier Ltd. Traditionally tubers of cyperus (Cyperus rotundus) and its extracts have been used for alluring fish during harvesting in India. An experiment was conducted to evaluate its feeding stimulatory activity and effect on the growth of a commercially important freshwater fish, Cirrhinus mrigala. Three isonitrogenous and isocaloric formulated diets viz. plant ingredient based control and control supplemented with cyperus tuber (CS) at 1% and 5% levels were fed to the fingerlings of mrigal, C. mrigala (2.68+0.20 g) for a period of 45 days. The growth performance and the activity of metabolic enzymes, aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT), in liver, gill and muscle tissues of mrigal were studied during every 15 days interval. Highest relative growth (72.28%) was obtained in the mrigal fed with the diet containing 5% cyperus (5% CS), while the relative growths were 66.18% and 43.40% for the fish fed with the 1% CS diet and control respectively. The activities of AST and ALT were significantly higher (p<0.01) in both 1% and 5% CS diets as compared to the control in all the tissues studied. Higher aminotransferase activities were observed in the tissues of 5% CS group than in those of 1% CS group throughout the experimental period. The observed higher enzymatic activity was concomitant with the higher growth rate in fish. The results suggested that cyperus tuber supplementation increased feed palatability and growth.

Experiment was conducted to study the effect of dietary protein level on growth and nutrient utilization by angel fish (Pterophyllum scalare) juveniles. Fifty-four juveniles (average wt. 2-2.5 g) were equally divided in three treatments with each of three replicates. Three formulated diets with graded protein levels, T1 (35% CP), T2 (40% CP) and T3 (45% CP) were fed to juveniles for 45 days. A trend of higher weight gain %, SGR, FER and PER was found with the increased CP level in the feed. Feed intake was similar in all the groups. T3 group fed with 45% CP registered highest weight gain % (43.26 ± 2.07), SGR (0.78 ± 0.04), FER (0.29 ± 0.01), which were significantly higher (P<0.05) than the T1 and T2 groups. Protein digestibility of T2 and T3 groups was significantly higher than the T1 group. Survival was similar in all the experimental groups. Diet with 45% CP with protein energy ratio of 112.62 mg protein/K cal. is ideal for juvenile angel fish for indoor rearing.

The feeding patterns with respect to quality and quantity of food of silver barb, Barbodes gonionotus varied with their size and development. The results indicated that the fish in the size group I (7-25 mm TL) were fairly omnivore with particular liking for rotifera, green and blue-green algae while the size group II (25.1-44 mm TL) and III (44.1-55 mm TL) were omnivore with higher tendency of feeding on debris, aquatic plants, green algae, blue-green algae and rotifera. However, the fish of the size group IV (55.1-80 mm TL) were found to be herbivore with feeding preference for aquatic plants, green and blue-green algae. In all the size groups, debris was the most dominant food item. Feeding preference of the fish showed clear ontogenetic shift. The electivity indices revealed that the fish were selective feeder.

Diel feeding chronology of sandwhiting, Sillago sihama was examined from stomach collections taken during the months of April, July and December'99 in Mulki estuary along Dakshina Kannada coast, India. Significant differences in mean stomach content weight were found between several consecutive 3 hour periods with peak fullness occurring in early morning and evening hours. The rate of gastric evacuation of natural food (crustacea, polychaetes and fish) was measured in the field was best described by an exponential model, with an estimated evacuation time of 8.0 h at a temperature of 28.5 ± 1.2°C. Stomach content analysis indicated that this species is a carnivore on a wide range of benthic, epibenthic and planktonic prey. The principal food items of S. sihama were crustaceans, polychaetes and fish. Fishes less than 100 mm TL preferred mainly crustaceans while larger ones depends on polychaetes, crustaceans and fish. The feeding activity of S. sihama was influenced by tidal cycle.

The fluid dynamic operation of a valveless pulse combustor has been studied experimentally and numerically. Through phase-locked chemiluminescence and pressure measurements it is shown that mechanical energy is created periodically in the flame surface, with an efficiency of 1.6%. This mechanical energy leaves the pulse combustor through unsteady jets at the aerovalve inlet and the tailpipe exit stations. Two thermodynamically distinct flows are identified: a flow that is transported from inlet to exit and participates in combustion along the way, and a flow that is ingested and then ejected from the combustor without undergoing combustion. It is the latter of these two flows which has the greatest quantity of net work done on it. Copyright © 2008 by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Inc.

Population growth and reproductive capacity of brackishwater rotifer, Brachionus plicatilis, were evaluated, for a period of 8 days in a temperature controlled ( =25°C) microalgallaborarory, under three different algal feeding regimens. The algal species that were tested are: (i) Chlorella sp. (T1), Tetraselmis chui (T2), Nannochloropsis oculata (T 3). The feeding density of each algal species was maintained similar as of 4.5xW6 ceHs mi. The rotifer fed on T. chui showed the highest (p<0.05) population growth (131.5 ind./ml), compared to that fed on Chlorella sp (45.67 ind./ml) and N oculata (43.44 ind./ml). The abundance of egg bearing rotifers was also higher (35.77%) with T. chuithan with Chlorella sp (27.76%) and N oculara (24.60%). The results of the present study indicate that T. chui could be the most suitable algal food for the stock culture of locally isolated rotifer B. plicatilis.

A laboratory-feeding trail was conducted for 45 days with fry of common carp Cyprinus carpio L. (0.45±0.03g) in aquaria in a static indoor fish rearing system. The fry were fed on a pelleted diet containing 33% crude protein having fishmeal as major protein source. The fish fry in five treatments A, B, C, D, and E, each with two replicates were fed on 5% daily ration divided into different feeding frequencies of 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 times a day respectively in order to observe the growth performance. Each replicate contained 15 fry having total initial weight of 6.87±0.31g. At the end of the feeding trial, significantly different and higher (p<0.05) growth response was observed in treatment C having a feeding frequencies of 4 times a day. Significantly the highest and the lowest percent growth of 334.30 and 218.91% were observed in fish fed on the diet (Treatment C) with 4 times and (Treatment A) 2 times feeding frequencies per day, respectively. Food conversion ratio (FCR) of 1.78 was significantly higher (pfeeding frequencies whereas, the least value of 1.22 was obtained in fish fed on the diet with 4 times daily feeding. Protein efficiency ratio (PER) ranged from 1.68 in fish in treatment A having a feeding frequencies of 2 times per day to 2.48 in fish in treatment C fed on the diet with 4 times feeding frequencies. Other growth parameters viz, specific growth rate (SGR), apparent protein digestibility (ADP) were also higher in treatment C than the other treatments. The results of the present study demonstrated that the growth performance of C. carpio was the best at 4 times feeding in a day using 33% dietary protein containing fish meal as major protein source.

Abundance of diatom (Bacillariophyceae) in the plankton population and the dietary role of it in chapila (Gudusia chapra) in pond were studied. A total of 25 genera of phytoplankton belonging to Bacillariophyceae (7), Chlorophyceae (11), Cyanophyceae (5) and Euglenophyceae (2) and 9 genera of zooplankton belonging to Crustacea (3) and Rotifera (6) were recorded from the water. Among the phytoplankton, highest abundance of Chlorophyceae was observed, and Bacillariophyceae, Cyanophyceae and Euglenophyceae ranked the second, third and fourth position in the planktonic population, respectively. Among the zooplankton, Rotifera was recorded as the most dominant group and Crustacea as the least one. From the gut content analysis, 4 groups of phytoplankton consisting of 33 genera of plankton were identified and recoded [sic] of which 25 belonging to phytoplankton and 8 belonging to zooplankton. This study reveals that the Chlorophyceae and Cyanophyceae were the most dominant food items of chapila. Bacillariophyceae (diatom) and Euglenophyceae were less important and Crustacea and Rotifera were the least important in the diet of Chapila. The present investigation showed that chapila appeared to be a plankton feeder with a preference for phytoplankton to zooplankton. Electivity analysis showed that the fish avoided zooplankton and strongly selected phytoplankton. In the gut contents of fish, Chlorophyceae was positively and Bacillariophyceae (diatom) was negatively selected throughout the experimental period, in the pond water.

The ability to feed on vertebrate blood has evolved many times in various arthropod clades. Consequently, saliva of blood-feeding arthropods has proven to be a rich source of antihemostatic molecules. A variety of platelet aggregation inhibitors antagonize platelet responses to wound-generated signals, including ADP, thrombin, and collagen. Anticoagulants disrupt elements of both the intrinsic and extrinsic pathways. Vasodilators include nitrophorins (nitric oxide storage and transport heme proteins), a variety of peptides that mimic endogenous vasodilatory neuropeptides, and proteins that catabolize or sequester endogenous vasoconstrictors. Multiple salivary proteins may be directed against each component of hemostasis, resulting in both redundancy and in some cases cooperative interactions between antihemostatic proteins. The complexity and redundancy of saliva ensures an efficient blood meal for the arthropod, but it also provides a diverse array of novel antihemostatic molecules for the pharmacologist.

Horseflies are economically important blood-feeding arthropods and also a nuisance for humans and vectors for filariasis. They rely heavily on the pharmacological properties of their saliva to get a blood meal and suppress immune reactions of hosts. Little information is available on antihemostatic substances in horsefly salivary glands; especially no horsefly immune suppressants have been reported. By proteomics or peptidomics and coupling transcriptome analysis with pharmacological testing, several families of proteins or peptides, which act mainly on the hemostatic system or immune system of the host, were identified and characterized from 30,000 pairs salivary glands of the horsefly Tabanus yao (Diptera, Tabanidae). They are: (i) a novel family of inhibitors of platelet aggregation including two members, which possibly inhibit platelet aggregation by a novel mechanism and act on platelet membrane, (ii) a novel family of immunosuppressant peptides including 12 members, which can inhibit interferon-gamma production and increase interleukin-10 secretion, (iii) a serine protease inhibitor with 56 amino acid residues containing anticoagulant activity, (iv) a serine protease with anticoagulant activity, (v) a protease with fibrinogenolytic activity, (vi) three families of antimicrobial peptides including six members, (vii) a hyaluronidase, (viii) a vasodilator peptide, which is an isoform of vasotab identified from Hybomitra bimaculata, and interestingly (ix) two metallothioneins, which are the first metallothioneins reported from invertebrate salivary glands. The current work will facilitate the understanding of the molecular mechanisms of the ectoparasite-host relationship and help in identifying novel vaccine targets and novel leading pharmacological compounds.
