Nowadays, the development of the photovoltaic (PV) technology is consolidated as a source of renewable energy. The research in the topic of maximum improvement on the energy efficiency of the PV plants is today a major challenge. The main requirement for this purpose is to know the performance of each of the PV modules that integrate the PV field in real time. In this respect, a PLC communications based Smart Monitoring and Communications Module, which is able to monitor at PV level their operating parameters, has been developed at the University of Malaga. With this device you can check if any of the panels is suffering any type of overriding performance, due to a malfunction or partial shadowing of its surface. Since these fluctuations in electricity production from a single panel affect the overall sum of all panels that conform a string, it is necessary to isolate the problem and modify the routes of energy through alternative paths in case of PV panels array configuration.

Expected damages of environmental risks depend both on their intensities and probabilities. There is very little control over probabilities of climate related disasters such as hurricanes. Therefore, researchers of social science are interested identifying preparation and mitigation measures that build human resilience to disasters and avoid serious loss. Conversely, environmental degradation, which is a process through which the natural environment is compromised in some way, has been accelerated by human activities. As scientists are finding effective ways on how to prevent and reduce pollution, the society often fails to adopt these effective preventive methods. Researchers of psychological and contextual characterization offer specific lessons for policy interventions that encourage human efforts to reduce pollution. This dissertation addresses four discussions of effective policy regimes encouraging pro-environmental preference in consumption and production, and promoting risk mitigation behavior in the face of natural hazards. The first essay describes how the speed of adoption of environment friendly technologies is driven largely by consumers’ preferences and their learning dynamics rather than producers’ choice. The second essay is an empirical analysis of a choice experiment to understand preferences for energy efficient investments. The empirical analysis suggests that subjects tend to increase energy efficient investment when they pay a pollution tax proportional to the total expenditure on energy consumption. However, investments in energy efficiency seem to be crowded out when subjects have the option to buy health insurance to cover pollution related health risks. In context of hurricane risk mitigation and in evidence of recently adopted My Safe Florida Home (MSFH) program by the State of Florida, the third essay shows that households with home insurance, prior experience with damages, and with a higher sense of vulnerability to be affected by hurricanes are more likely to allow home inspection to seek mitigation information. The fourth essay evaluates the impact of utility disruption on household well being based on the responses of a household-level phone survey in the wake of hurricane Wilma. Findings highlight the need for significant investment to enhance the capacity of rapid utility restoration after a hurricane event in the context of South Florida.

Greenhouse production is a very important activity in the West region of Portugal, with an area of approximately 800 ha where the regular production consists in two crops per year, one in winter-spring and the other in summer-autumn. Many growers are now prepared to better exploit market opportunities, since they know that the big export window opportunity is from June to September, when the production is difficult in other regions of south due to high temperatures. Grower’s use new and more productive varieties, either in soil or hydroponic systems, mostly in unheated greenhouses, naturally ventilated, and equipped with modern fertigation systems. Greenhouse production causes some environmental impacts due to the high use of inputs. Several improvements in technologies and crop practices may contribute to increase the use efficiency of resources, decreasing the negative environmental impacts. Greenhouse vegetable production in Northern EU countries is based on the supply of heating and differs significantly from the production system in the Southern EU countries. In the Northern countries, direct energy inputs, mostly for heating, are predominant while in the South the indirect energy input is also important, mainly associated with fertilizers, plastic cover materials and other auxiliary materials. The main objective of this work was to characterise the greenhouse production systems in the West region of Portugal, in order to evaluate the energetic consumptions (direct and indirect), the GHH emissions, the production costs and the farmer’s income. With this work the mostly important inputs were identified, allowing proposing alternative measures to improve efficiency and sustainability. All the data was obtained by surveys performed directly with growers, previously selected to be representative of the crop practices and greenhouse type of the region. However, more research should be performed in order to develop and to test technologies capable to improve resources use efficiency in greenhouse production.

Stirling engines with parabolic dish for thermal to electric conversion of solar energy is one of the most promising solutions of renewable energy technologies in order to reduce the dependency from fossil fuels in electricity generation. This paper addresses the modelling and simulation of a solar powered Stirling engine system with parabolic dish and electric generator aiming to determine its energy production and efficiency. The model includes the solar radiation concentration system, the heat transfer in the ther- mal receiver, the thermal cycle and the mechanical and electric energy conversion. The thermodynamic and energy transfer processes in the engine are modelled in detail, including all the main processes occur- ring in the compression, expansion and regenerator spaces. Starting from a particular configuration, an optimization of the concentration factor is also carried out and the results for both the transient and steady state regimes are presented. It was found that using a directly illuminated thermal receiver with- out cavity the engine efficiency is close to 23.8% corresponding to a global efficiency of 10.4%. The com- ponents to be optimized are identified in order to increase the global efficiency of the system and the trade-off between system complexity and efficiency is discussed.

Nowadays, the spreading of the air pollution crisis enhanced by greenhouse gases emission is leading to the worsening of the global warming. In this context, the transportation sector plays a vital role, since it is responsible for a large part of carbon dioxide production. In order to address these issues, the present thesis deals with the development of advanced control strategies for the energy efficiency optimization of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), supported by the prediction of future working conditions of the powertrain. In particular, a Dynamic Programming algorithm has been developed for the combined optimization of vehicle energy and battery thermal management. At this aim, the battery temperature and the battery cooling circuit control signal have been considered as an additional state and control variables, respectively. Moreover, an adaptive equivalent consumption minimization strategy (A-ECMS) has been modified to handle zero-emission zones, where engine propulsion is not allowed. Navigation data represent an essential element in the achievement of these tasks. With this aim, a novel simulation and testing environment has been developed during the PhD research activity, as an effective tool to retrieve routing information from map service providers via vehicle-to-everything connectivity. Comparisons between the developed and the reference strategies are made, as well, in order to assess their impact on the vehicle energy consumption. All the activities presented in this doctoral dissertation have been carried out at the Green Mobility Research Lab} (GMRL), a research center resulting from the partnership between the University of Bologna and FEV Italia s.r.l., which represents the industrial partner of the research project.

High Energy efficiency and high performance are the key regiments for Internet of Things (IoT) end-nodes. Exploiting cluster of multiple programmable processors has recently emerged as a suitable solution to address this challenge. However, one of the main bottlenecks for multi-core architectures is the instruction cache. While private caches fall into data replication and wasting area, fully shared caches lack scalability and form a bottleneck for the operating frequency. Hence we propose a hybrid solution where a larger shared cache (L1.5) is shared by multiple cores connected through a low-latency interconnect to small private caches (L1). However, it is still limited by large capacity miss with a small L1. Thus, we propose a sequential prefetch from L1 to L1.5 to improve the performance with little area overhead. Moreover, to cut the critical path for better timing, we optimized the core instruction fetch stage with non-blocking transfer by adopting a 4 x 32-bit ring buffer FIFO and adding a pipeline for the conditional branch. We present a detailed comparison of different instruction cache architectures' performance and energy efficiency recently proposed for Parallel Ultra-Low-Power clusters. On average, when executing a set of real-life IoT applications, our two-level cache improves the performance by up to 20% and loses 7% energy efficiency with respect to the private cache. Compared to a shared cache system, it improves performance by up to 17% and keeps the same energy efficiency. In the end, up to 20% timing (maximum frequency) improvement and software control enable the two-level instruction cache with prefetch adapt to various battery-powered usage cases to balance high performance and energy efficiency.

Energy transition is the response of humankind to the concerning effects of fossil fuels depletion, climate change and energy insecurity, and calls for a deep penetration of renewable energy sources (RESs) in power systems and industrial processes. Despite the high potentials, low impacts and long-term availability, RESs present some limits which need to be overcome, such as the strong variability and difficult predictability, which result in scarce reliability and difficult applicability in steady-state processes. Some technological solutions relate to energy storage systems, equipment electrification and hybrid systems deployment, thus accomplishing distributed generation even in remote sites as offshore. However, all of these actions cannot disregard sustainability, which represents a founding principle for any project, bringing together economics, reliability and environmental protection. To entail sustainability in RESs-based innovative projects, previous knowledge and tools are often not tailored or miss the novel objectives. This research proposes three methodological approaches, bridging the gaps. The first contribute adapts literature-based indicators of inherent safety and energy efficiency to capture the specificities of novel process plants and hybrid systems. Minor case studies dealing with novel P2X processes exemplify the application of these novel indicators. The second method guides the conceptual design of hybrid systems for the valorisation of a RES in a site, by considering the sustainability performances of alternative design options. Its application is demonstrated through the comparison of two offshore sites where wave energy can be valorised. Finally, “OHRES”, a comprehensive tool for the sustainable optimisation of hybrid renewable energy systems is proposed. “OHRES” hinges on the exploitation of multiple RESs, by converting ex-post sustainability indicators into discrimination markers screening a large number of possible system configurations, according to the location features. Five case studies demonstrate “OHRES” versatility in the sustainable valorisation of multiple RESs.

The design process of any electric vehicle system has to be oriented towards the best energy efficiency, together with the constraint of maintaining comfort in the vehicle cabin. Main aim of this study is to research the best thermal management solution in terms of HVAC efficiency without compromising occupant’s comfort and internal air quality. An Arduino controlled Low Cost System of Sensors was developed and compared against reference instrumentation (average R-squared of 0.92) and then used to characterise the vehicle cabin in real parking and driving conditions trials. Data on the energy use of the HVAC was retrieved from the car On-Board Diagnostic port. Energy savings using recirculation can reach 30 %, but pollutants concentration in the cabin builds up in this operating mode. Moreover, the temperature profile appeared strongly nonuniform with air temperature differences up to 10° C. Optimisation methods often require a high number of runs to find the optimal configuration of the system. Fast models proved to be beneficial for these task, while CFD-1D model are usually slower despite the higher level of detail provided. In this work, the collected dataset was used to train a fast ML model of both cabin and HVAC using linear regression. Average scaled RMSE over all trials is 0.4 %, while computation time is 0.0077 ms for each second of simulated time on a laptop computer. Finally, a reinforcement learning environment was built in OpenAI and Stable-Baselines3 using the built-in Proximal Policy Optimisation algorithm to update the policy and seek for the best compromise between comfort, air quality and energy reward terms. The learning curves show an oscillating behaviour overall, with only 2 experiments behaving as expected even if too slow. This result leaves large room for improvement, ranging from the reward function engineering to the expansion of the ML model.

Este trabalho foi realizado com o objetivo de avaliar os efeitos do uso de leucena e levedura em dietas para bovinos sobre o metabolismo ruminal, incluindo o pH e as produções de ácido graxos voláteis (AGV), amônia e gás metano. Quatro bovinos machos com 800 kg e fistulados no rúmen foram mantidos em quadrado latino 4 × 4, em arranjo fatorial 2 × 2, composto de dois níveis de leucena (20 e 50% MS) e feno de capim coast-cross na presença ou ausência de levedura. Não houve influência das dietas nos valores médios de pH (média 6,82) e nas concentrações de amônia no rúmen, que variaram de 18 a 21 mg/100 mL. Houve interação entre níveis de leucena e levedura na concentração total de AGV. As dietas não diferiram quanto à concentração de ácido acético, mas os animais alimentados com a dieta com 50% de leucena e contendo levedura apresentaram maiores concentrações médias de ácido propiônico (média 19,14 mM). A emissão de metano reduziu em12,3% em relação à mesma dieta sem levedura e em 17,2% quando os animais foram alimentados com 20% de leucena com levedura. Verificou-se efeito associativo de leucena, quando fornecida em alto nível na dieta (50% MS), e levedura na redução da emissão de metano e na melhoria no padrão de fermentação no rúmen, o que pode reduzir as perdas de energia e melhorar eficiência energética do animal.

A recente crise financeira global traz consigo efeitos como a redução da atividade econômica e, consequentemente, do consumo de energia. Essa pode ser uma importante oportunidade para reorganizar o sistema energético em bases mais sólidas e sustentáveis: a eficiência, a maior participação das fontes renováveis e a descentralização da produção de energia. O Brasil e outros países em desenvolvimento podem aproveitar a experiência dos países desenvolvidos em eficiência energética, complementando com um programa vigoroso em energias renováveis, particularmente as "modernas" (eólica, solar, biomassa e pequenas hidrelétricas). Entretanto, preocupa o cenário inercial nacional, baseado num aumento da participação das fontes fósseis de energia na matriz, na priorização dos recursos à exploração de petróleo e gás natural e na manutenção de padrões insustentáveis de produção e consumo.

This study evaluates the impacts of Brazilian highway conditions on fuel consumption and, consequently, on carbon dioxide (COO emissions. For the purpose of this study, highway conditions refer to the level of highway maintenance: the incidence of large potholes, large surface cracks, uneven sections, and debris. Primary computer collected data related to the fuel consumption of three types of trucks were analyzed. The data were derived from 88 trips taken over six routes, each route representative of one of two highway conditions: better or worse. Study results are initially presented for each type of truck being monitored. The results are then aggregated to approximate the entire Brazilian highway network. In all cases, results confirmed environmental benefits resulting from travel over the better routes. There was found to be an increase in energy efficiency from traveling better roads, which resulted in lower fuel consumption and lower CO(2) emissions. Statistical analysis of the results suggests that, in general, fuel consumption data were significant at *P < 0.05, rejecting the null hypothesis that average fuel consumption from traveling the better routes is statistically equal to average fuel consumption from traveling the worse routes. Improved Brazilian road conditions would generate economic benefits, reduce dependency on and consumption of fossil fuels (due to the increase in energy efficiency), and reduce CO(2) emissions. These findings may have additional relevancy if Brazil needs to reduce carbon dioxide emissions to reach future Kyoto Protocol`s emissions targets, which should take effect in January 2013. The study on the thermal performance of the air-conditioned buildings of the new research centre of the Brazilian Petroleum Company, in the tropical climate of Rio de Janeiro, was part of a bigger research and consultancy, project involving environmental issues. The architectural design was the subject of a national competition in 2004, encompassing over 100,000 m(2). According to the design brief, out of the 10 buildings of the new research centre, 7 have to be either completely or partially air-conditioned, due to specific occupation requirements. The challenge for better thermal performance was related to systems` energy efficiency, to the introduction of natural ventilation and to the notion of adaptive comfort, which were verified with the support of thermal dynamic simulations. At the early stages of the assessments, the potential for natural ventilation in the working spaces considering the mixed-mode strategy achieved 30% of occupation hours. However, the development of the design project led to fully air-conditioned working spaces, due to users` references regarding the conventional culture of the office environment. Nevertheless, the overall architectural approach in accordance to the climatic conditions still showed a contribution to the buildings` energy efficiency. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Passive techniques as an alternative to artificial cooling can bring important energy, environmental, financial, operational and qualitative benefits. However, regions such as the wet tropics can reach high levels of thermal stress in which passive means alone are unable to provide appropriate thermal comfort standards for some parts of the year. Despite a great accumulation of empirical information on the passive performance of houses for either free-running or conditioned modes, very little work has been done on the thermal performance of buildings that can operate with a mixed-running strategy in warm-humid climates. Buildings with such design features are able to balance the needs for comfort, privacy, and energy efficiency during different periods of the year. As free-running and conditioned modes are believed by many to be 'opposite' approaches, and have been presented as separate strategies, this paper demonstrates that not all parameters are directly opposite and a possible dual-mode integrated operation can be used for warm-humid locations for maximum comfort and minimum energy requirements. For this purpose, simulation runs using ESP-R (University of Strathclyde, ESRU, UK) were based on the climate data of Darwin (Australia) and on the ventilation styles of the house: free running and conditioned. Design features applicable to both, i.e. for a dual mode operation could be identified and the differences between conditioned and free running were demonstrated and proved not to be totally conflicting and therefore suitable for a dual mode operation. Different daily usage profiles (five use patterns were defined), and zoning of sleeping and living areas are presented. The dual mode use patterns compared to the base case house, for all the user possibilities, had improved performances of 17-52%, when compared to the free-running mode and 66-98% when compared to the conditioned mode. Simulation runs using other warm-humid climates (Miami, USA; Sao Luis, Brazil; Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia) were also conducted and compared to the results found for Darwin. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd. O presente trabalho incide sobre a análise da eficiência energética dos elevadores. Para se poder entender esta questão, são apresentadas diversas informações que permitem conhecer os factores associados aos consumos de energia activa, procurando-se perceber qual o rendimento destes equipamentos. Inicialmente são analisados os diversos componentes, que fazem parte de um elevador e os locais em que esses componentes são instalados. Abordam-se as diferentes soluções de accionamento, os diversos tipos de utilização e as diferentes tecnologias que podem ser aplicadas. O estudo dos consumos de energia eléctrica dos elevadores, foi efectuado com base na metodologia desenvolvida pelo grupo E4, do programa Utilização Eficiente da Energia, da Comunidade Europeia, cujo suporte foi o DRAFT ISSO/DIS 25745 - 1 Energy Performance of Lifts and Escalators - Part 1: Energy Measurement and Conformance. Os consumos de energia eléctrica serão caracterizados com os elevadores a serem monitorizados individualmente e sem carga na cabina. A apresentação de resultados obtidos terá em linha de conta: a energia eléctrica consumida com o equipamento em modo de funcionamento, ou seja, com este a realizar ciclos completos, e a potência eléctrica consumida com a instalação em modo de standby, ou seja em não operação. No presente trabalho, são divulgados estudos do grupo E4, em que foram monitorizados elevadores em quatro países da Europa: Portugal, Alemanha, Itália e Polónia. Estes estudos permitem estimar os consumos anuais de energia eléctrica, a nível de funcionamento e a nível de standby e estimar o consumo total, seguindo como base a metodologia anteriormente referida. Para se caracterizar o parque Europeu de elevadores, o grupo E4 recorreu à ELA, Associação Europeia de Elevadores, tendo assim sido possível estimar o consumo anual numa Europa a 27, acrescido do parque da Suíça e da Noruega. Pretende-se com isso poder estimar o potencial de redução no consumo energético no parque analisado, com a aplicação das Melhores Tecnologias Disponíveis (MTD) e com a aplicação de tecnologias que ainda estão em fase de desenvolvimento. (MTND). Paralelamente o autor irá apresentar as monitorizações que efectuou a três elevadores, para os quais procurou validar as leituras efectuadas, comparando os consumos obtidos, com os consumos registados pelas monitorizações do grupo E4 e respectivas estimativas de consumos anuais de energia. As monitorizações do autor, serão utilizadas na catalogação desses três equipamentos a nível de classes de eficiência energética, tendo por base a VDI 4707/Part 1 - Lifts - Energy Efficiency - VDI manual Building Services - Volume 5: Transportation Systems. Procura-se, também, criar um método de apoio na tomada de decisão nas diversas fases de um ciclo do elevador, nomeadamente: desde a especificação, a selecção do sistema de accionamento, a selecção dos sistemas auxiliares, a instalação e a operação do elevador, com vista à melhoria da eficiência energética, e á instalação futura ou à modernização dos equipamentos existentes. Abordam-se as barreiras existentes que inibem a mudança no sector de elevação, para a implementação das MTD no parque de elevadores existente ou no desenvolvimento de novas tecnologias que possibilitem a melhoria da eficiência energética, MTND. Por ultimo, aborda-se de forma simples a temática da supervisão técnica nos elevadores, através da monitorização e supervisão dos diversos componentes, com vista à optimização da gestão da manutenção e procurando interligar esta gestão à melhoria da eficiência energética. Consegue-se concluir que apenas com a aplicação das MTD, podem ser obtidos ganhos de eficiência energética, e também que este tema não tem tido a importância que merece, pois, na análise da eficiência energética de um edifício, a eficiência dos elevadores não é tida em consideração. A ausência de legislação específica, que torne a análise da eficiência energética dos elevadores obrigatória, será um dos problemas referidos. Reforça-se que, a potencialidade de poupança energética na Europa não deve ser desprezada.

Introdução – Os componentes protésicos têm um papel fundamental na eficiência energética da marcha dos indivíduos amputados. Esta é uma área de conhecimento ainda em desenvolvimento, onde a investigação desempenha um papel central. Objectivos – Comparar e analisar o efeito de dois joelhos protésicos, 3R34, monocêntrico modular, de fricção constante, com auxiliar de extensão incorporado (A) e 3R92, monocêntrico modular, com travão de fricção e controlo pneumático da fase de balanço (B) no consumo energético e eficiência da marcha. Metodologia – Um indivíduo do sexo masculino de 27 anos, com amputação transfemural longa, foi sujeito a um protocolo submáximo de avaliação da resposta ao exercício em passadeira rolante (H/P/Cosmos(R) Mercury), através de um sistema de análise de gases breath‑by‑breath (Cosmed Quark PFT Ergo). Foi efetuado o mesmo protocolo com intervalo de dois dias, primeiro utilizando o joelho A e depois o B. As variáveis analisadas foram o consumo de O2 (VO2), o equivalente metabólico (MET) e a eficiência energética da marcha (Quociente de VO2 esperado de um individuo saudável e o VO2 do individuo em estudo). O esforço percecionado foi medido com a escala RPE de Borg. Resultados – O consumo energético com o joelho A (24,2 ml O2/kg/min; 6,9 MET) foi inferior ao obtido com o joelho B (28,68 ml O2/kg/min; 8,2 MET). A eficiência energética da marcha foi mais elevada para o joelho A (43%) do que para o joelho B (39%). Conclusão – A utilização do joelho A na prótese do indivíduo em estudo resulta numa marcha de menor consumo energético e maior eficiência. No entanto, este valor poderá estar influenciado pelo curto período de adaptação ao joelho B, sendo necessários mais estudos para confirmar os resultados do estudo e a influência deste fator. ABSTRACT - Background – Prosthetic components have a crucial role in the energy efficiency of amputee’s gait. This is an area of knowledge still in development, where research plays a central role. Objective – The purpose of this case study is to compare the impact in energy consumption of two prosthetic knees, titanium single‑axis constant friction knee joint with internal extension assist, 3R34 (A) and a single‑axis pneumatic swing phase control, 3R92 (B). Methodology – The participant was a transtibial amputee, male, with 27 years old, with no other clinical or functional impairments. To measure the energy expenditure a submaximal treadmill (H/P/Cosmos(R) Mercury) exercise stress test combined with a breath‑by‑breath analysis system (Cosmed Quark PFT Ergo) was used. The same test was applied to both knees, separated by two days. The analyzed variables were O2 consumption (VO2), metabolic equivalent (MET) and gait efficiency (VO2 ratio expected from a healthy individual and the studied individual). A rate of perceived exertion (Borg’s Scale) was used. Results – The results were favorable to knee A (24.2 ml O2/kg/min; 6.9 MET, 43% efficiency) compared with knee B (28.68 ml O2/kg/min; 8.2 MET, 39% efficiency). Conclusion – In this case, a less energy consumption gait corresponds to the prosthesis with knee A. These values may be influenced by the short adaptation period with knee B, so it’s necessary to perform more studies to confirm the previous results and to understand the truly impact of correct adaptation factor to the best prosthetics components for different patients.
