One of the most controversial issues in the history of Phonetics is the discussion about the typology of speech rhythm. Out of the Greek and Latin tradition on poetry versification, the notion of rhythm has been misunderstood as speech rate. In the early years of the 20th century, a dichotomy merged classifying the speech rhythm into stress-timed and syllable-timed languages, inspired by the old theory of poetic versification. Following the same old pattern, later on, a third type of language were proposed: the moraic languages, initially attributed only to Japanese. With the facilities to carry on acoustic research, in the second half of the 20th century, the typology of language rhythm came to a dead end. Different types of language were set out. This paper discusses these ideas, showing a great misunderstanding among researchers in relation to the characterization of a syllable-timed language. The notion of mora is revisited and its role in the study of speech rhythm is better defined.

This article intends to study sandhi phenomena in Archaic Portuguese (13th century), in order to obtain clues about the prosodic status of clitics. Analyzing the texts of the reminiscent religious medieval cantigas (420 Cantigas de Santa Maria, compiled by Alfonso X, the Wise) this study intends to determine the cliticization direction, in order to find clues to the formation of superior prosodic constituents, based on the consideration of the syntactic structure of the sentence and the direction of the syntactic cliticization.

The jurist Clovis Bevilaqua (1859-1944) was a privileged member of a political and intellectual elite in the context of the transition from the nineteenth to the early decades of the twentieth century in this country, having been a professor at the Faculdade de Direito de Recife, author of the Civil Code of 1917, consultant for the Ministério das Relações Exteriores and jurist of international prestige, and literary critic and author of law, philosophy and history.Their biographies emphasize the breadth of his legal knowledge, the merits of civil codification which was author and lifestyle humble and generous earning him the nickname "secular saint". However, the lawyer had the habit of collecting photos of himself and of his family and this behavior is characterized as a single vanity for his biographers. From four biographies of Clovis Bevilaqua, written by Lauro Romero (1956), Raimundo de Menezes and Ubaldino de Azevedo (1959), Noemia Paes Barreto Brandão (1989) and Silvio Meira (1990), we intend to discuss how these images are used to illustrate the trajectory of the jurist and corroborate the distinct narratives models.

The narratives of Decameron, composed by Giovanni Boccacio in the 14th century, possess a popular content carefully tied together by a formal structure capable of concentrating sophisticated techniques. The present paper revisits some relation possibilities between Decameron and Novellino, an anonymous work from the 13th century, composed on the basis of fables and stories gathered mainly from the oral tradition. Our aim is not to demonstrate a genealogy of the prose and of its freedom to recover narrative situations but to reflect, by means of examples of great reverberation, on the strategies developed to make elements from the ancient tradition highly functional in the literary tradition, according to the formal resources available in each period.

There will be a review on the collaboration of Eça de Queirós in Gazeta de Notícias (Rio de Janeiro-1880-1897), written directly to the Brazilian public. In some of these texts Eça makes reflections on the mediation that the newspaper plays in society, particularly in southern Europe. We believe that in these texts there are manifestations and traits of doctrinal-programmatic nature, metalitterary aspects and also a kind of history of occidental press. These press texts are now gathered in Textos de Imprensa IV – da Gazeta de Notícias, which includes the volume critical edition of the works of Eça de Queirós, coordinated by Carlos Reis. The study of these texts will contribute to the analysis and interpretation of his fiction and journalistic works.
