Hypertension is a known risk factor for cardiovascular disease in adults. Essential hypertension in children and adolescents is increasing in prevalence in the United States, and hypertension in children may track into adulthood. This increasing prevalence is attributed to the trends of increasing overweight and obese children and adolescents. Family history and being of African-American/black descent may predispose youth to elevated blood pressure. Interventions targeted to reduce and treat hypertension in youth include non-pharmaceutical interventions such as weight reduction, increased physical activity, and dietary changes and pharmaceutical treatment when indicated. The effectiveness of non-pharmaceutical interventions is well documented in adults, but there are limited studies with regards to children and adolescents, specifically in the arena of dietary interventions. Lifestyle modifications such as dietary interventions are the mainstay of recommended treatment for those children and adolescents with prehypertension or stage 1 hypertension. Given the association of being overweight and hypertension, efficacy of dietary interventions are of interest because of reduced cost, easy implementation and potential for multiple beneficial outcomes such as reduced weight and reduction of other metabolic or cardiovascular derangements. Barriers to dietary interventions often include socioeconomic status, ethnicity, personal, and external factors. The goal of this systematic review of the literature is to identify interventions targeted to children and adolescents that focus on recommended dietary changes related to blood pressure. Dietary interventions found for this review mostly focused on a particular nutrient or food group with the one notable exception that focused on the DASH pattern of eating. The effects of the interventions on blood pressure varied, but overall dietary modifications can be achieved in youth and can serve a role in producing positive outcomes on blood pressure. Increasing potassium and following a DASH diet seemed to provide the most clinically significant results. Further studies are still needed to evaluate long-term effectiveness and to contribute more supporting evidence for particular modifications in these age cohorts.^

Understanding a population's dietary behavior is important to promote behaviors which have the most beneficial impact on health. The most recent Dietary Guidelines for Americans (2005) identifies carotenoids as a key nutrient to be consumed through increased intake of fruits and vegetables (FV). While some studies have included or focused on the Hispanic population, few have focused only on Mexican-American populations and staged its intake of FV. Stage of change behavior theory has been used to understand the adoption and promotion of healthy behaviors such as increased intake of FV. It has been shown to effectively aid interventionists' understanding of dietary behavior. Intake patterns of FV of older women, rural residents, and adolescents of Mexican American descent have been conducted but not by stages of change. This study aimed to determine the relationship between stages of change for fruits and vegetables (SOC-FV) and total carotene intake to assess the quality of SOC-FV as a surrogate measure of total carotene. ^ Data from the 2000 Qué Sabrosa Vida Community Nutrition Survey (QSV-CNS) were analyzed to identify the SOC-FV and sources of carotenes in a Mexican American population 18-60 yrs. of the Paso del Norte region. A 107 item interviewer administered food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) specifically calibrated for a Mexican American population was used to collect usual intake of total carotene. The QSV survey study population included 963 participants, 590 (61.3%) women and 373 (38.7%) men. A statistically significant mean difference in caloric intake between men and women was found (p-value = <0.01). When total carotene intake was adjusted for energy, there were significant differences between men and women (p-value = <0.0001) with women consuming a higher amount of total carotene (406 RE/kcal 1,000) than men (332 RE/kcal 1000). The food sources of total carotene for both genders included many items found in a traditional Mexican American diet. Chile, after carrots, was the highest contributor of dietary carotene. Total carotene intake was not associated with stages of change among women or men and their distributions were not linear. Mean differences of total carotene by stages of change were significant for women for pre-contemplation/contemplation (p-value = 0.04) and preparation (p-value = 0.0004) but not for men. ^ SOC-FV may serve as a surrogate measure for dietary carotene intake. This study's Mexican American population had a high carotene quality diet derived from traditional food items irrespective of their stage of change for fruits and vegetables. To better understand this population's dietary intake a measure for acculturation should be included. Interventions aimed at Mexican American populations should aim to promote traditional diets consistent with cultural practices.^ ^

In developing countries, infection and malnutrition, and their interaction effects, account for the majority of childhood deaths and chronic deficits in growth and development. To promote child health, the causal determinants of infection and malnutrition and cost-effective interventions must be identified. To this end, medical examinations of 988 children (age two weeks to 14 years) living at three altitudes (coastal < 300m; sierra (TURN) 3,000m; and altiplano > 4,000m) in Chile's northermost Department of Arica revealed that 393 (40%) of the youngsters harbored one or more infections. When sorted by region and ethnicity, indigenous children of the highlands had infection rates 50% higher than children of Spanish descent living near the coast.^ An ecological model was developed and used to examine the causal path of infection and measure the effect of single and combined environmental variables. Family variables significantly linked to child health included maternal health, age and education. Significant child determinants of infection included the child's nutrient intake and medical history. When compared to children well and free of disease, infected youngsters reported a higher incidence of recent illness and a lower intake of basic foodstuffs. Traditional measures of child health, e.g. birth condition, weaning history, maternal fertility, and family wealth, did not differentiate between well and infected children.^ When height, weight, arm circumference, and subcapular skinfold measurements were compared, infected children, regardless of age, had smaller arm circumferences, the statistical difference being the greatest for males, age nine to eleven. Height and weight, the traditional growth indices, did not differentiate between well and infected groups.^ Infection is not determined by a single environmental factor or even a series of variables. Child health is ecological in nature and cannot be improved independent of changes in the environment that surrounds the child. To focus on selected child health needs, such as feeding programs or immunization campaigns, without simultaneously attending to the environment from which the needs arose is an inappropriate use of time, personnel, and money. ^

Introduction. Distant metastasis remains the leading cause of death among prostate cancer patients. Several genetic susceptibility loci associated with Prostate cancer have been identified by the Genome Wide Association Studies (GWAS). To date, few studies have explored the ability of these SNPs to identify metastatic prostate cancer. Based on the identification of genetic variants as predictors of aggressive disease, a case comparison study of prostate cancer patients was designed to explore the association of 96 GWAS single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) with metastatic disease. ^ Method. 1242 histologically confirmed prostate cancer patients, with and without metastatic disease, were enrolled into the study. Data were collected from personal interviews, hospital database and abstraction of medical records. Ninety six SNPs identified from GWAS studies based on their associations with prostate cancer risk were genotyped in the study population. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were used to explore the relationships of the variants with metastatic prostate cancer in Whites and African American men. ^ Results. Four SNPs showed independent associations with metastatic prostate cancer (rs721048 in EHBP1 (2p15), rs3025039 in VEGF (6p12), rs11228565 in Intergenic(11q13.2) and rs2735839 in KLK3(19q13.33)) in the White population. For SNP rs2735839 in KLK3, genotype GA was 1.71 times as likely to be associated with metastatic prostate cancer diagnosis as genotype AA after adjusting for other significant SNPs and covariates (95% CI, 1.12-2.60; p=0.012). In men of African descent, three SNPs: rs1512268 in NKX3-1(8p21.2), rs12155172 in intergenic (7p15.3) & rs10486567 in JAZF1 (7p15.2) were positively associated with metastatic disease in the multivariate analysis. The strongest SNP was rs1512268 heterozygous genotype AG in NKX3-1(8p21.2) which was associated with 3.97-fold increased risk of metastatic prostate cancer diagnosis (95% CI, 1.69-9.34; p =0.002). ^ Conclusion. Genetic variants associated with metastatic prostate cancer were different in Whites and African American men. Given the high mortality rate recorded in men diagnosed with metastatic prostate tumor, further studies are needed to validate associations and establish their clinical application.^

The ventricular system is a critical component of the central nervous system (CNS) that is formed early in the developmental stages and remains functional through the lifetime. Changes in the ventricular system can be easily discerned via neuroimaging procedures and most of the time it reflects changes in the physiology of the CNS. In this study we attempted to identify specific genes associated with variation in ventricular volume in humans. Methods. We conducted a genome wide association (GWA) analysis of the volume of the lateral ventricles among 1605 individuals of European ancestry from two community based cohorts, the Genetics of Microangiopathic Brain Injury (GMBI; N=814) and Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC; N=791). Significant findings from the analysis were tested for replication in both the cohorts and then meta-analyzed to get an estimate of overall significance. Results. In our GWA analyses, no single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) reached a genome-wide significance of p<10−8. There were 25 SNPs in GMBI and 9 SNPs in ARIC that reached a threshold of p<10 −5. However, none of the top SNPs from each cohort were replicated in the other. In the meta-analysis, no SNP reached the genome-wide threshold of 5×10−8, but we identified five novel SNPs associated with variation in ventricular volume at the p<10 −5 level. Strongest association was for rs2112536 in an intergenic region on chromosome 5q33 (Pmeta= 8.46×10−7 ). The remaining four SNPs were located on chromosome 3q23 encompassing the gene for Calsyntenin-2 (CLSTN2). The SNPs with strongest association in this region were rs17338555 (Pmeta= 5.28×10 −6), rs9812091 (Pmeta= 5.89×10−6 ), rs9812283 (Pmeta= 5.97×10−6) and rs9833213 (Pmeta= 6.96×10−6). Conclusions. This GWA study of ventricular volumes in the community-based cohorts of European descent identifies potential locus on chromosomes 3 and 5. Further characterization of these loci may provide insights into pathophysiology of ventricular involvement in various neurological diseases.^

The flows and sills drilled at Sites 794 and 797 in the Yamato Basin of the Japan Sea are subalkalic, olivine, and/or plagioclase phyric basalts. Compositionally, the rocks can be divided into a depleted, low-K type and an enriched, relatively high-K type. In addition, two contrasting evolution trends are reflected in the rock compositions, which allow four different magmatic suites to be identified. It is suggested that the depleted or enriched nature of these suites represent primary characteristics, while the different evolution trends are related to fractionation processes in crustal magma chambers. A tholeiitic evolution trend, with increasing FeO and TiO2 and decreasing Al2O3, can be modelled by fractional crystallization of 40%-50% plagioclase, olivine, and augite. A mildly calc-alkalic evolution trend, with decreasing FeO, increasing Al2O3, and nearly constant TiO2, can be modelled by 8%-12% olivine fractionation. Mineralogical evidence suggests that these differences may be related to the effect of small amounts of water during crystallization of the calc-alkalic suites. The tholeiitic suites occur in the lower parts of the drill cores, while the calc-alkalic suites occur in the upper parts. This suggests a complex tectonic and magmatic evolution, perhaps reflecting a transition between calc-alkalic magmatism related to subduction zone activity and tholeiitic magmatism related to back-arc spreading. Furthermore, any magmatic model must be able to account for the range in parental magmas from depleted to enriched throughout the tectonic history of the Yamato Basin.

Ocean Drilling Program Hole 923A, located on the western flank of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge south of the Kane Fracture Zone, recovered primitive gabbros that have mineral trace element compositions inconsistent with growth from a single parental melt. Plagioclase crystals commonly show embayed anorthitic cores overgrown by more albitic rims. Ion probe analyses of plagioclase cores and rims show consistent differences in trace element ratios, indicating variation in the trace element characteristics of their respective parental melts. This requires the existence of at least two distinct melt compositions within the crust during the generation of these gabbros. Melt compositions calculated to be parental to plagioclase cores are depleted in light rare earth elements, but enriched in yttrium, compared to basalts from this region of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, which are normal mid-ocean ridge basalt (N-MORB). Clinopyroxene trace element compositions are similar to those predicted to be in equilibrium with N-MORB. However, primitive clinopyroxene crystals are much more magnesian than those produced in one-atmosphere experiments on N-MORB, suggesting that the major element composition of the melt was unlike N-MORB. These data require that the diverse array of melt compositions generated within the mantle beneath mid-ocean ridges are not always fully homogenised during melt extraction from the mantle and that the final stage of mixing can occur efficiently within crustal magma chambers. This has implications for the process of melt extraction from the mantle and the liquid line of descent of MORB

reduce costs and labor associated with predicting the genotypic mean (GM) of a synthetic variety (SV) of maize (Zea mays L.), breeders can develop SVs from L lines and s single crosses (SynL,SC) instead of L+2s lines (SynL). The objective of this work was to derive and study formulae for the inbreeding coefficient (IC) and GM of SynL,SC, SynL, and the SV derived from (L+2s)/2 single crosses (SynSC). All SVs were derived from the same L+2s unrelated lines whose IC is FL, and each parent of a SV was represented by m plants. An a priori probability equation for the IC was used. Important results were: 1) the largest and smallest GMs correspond to SynL and SynL,SC, respectively; 2) the GM predictors with the largest and intermediate precision are those for SynL and SynL,SC, respectively; 3) only when FL=1, or m is large, SynL and SynSC are the same population, but only with SynSC prediction costs and labor undergo the maximum decrease, although its prediction precision is the lowest. To determine the SV to be developed, breeders should also consider the availability of lines, single crosses, manpower and land area; besides budget, target farmers, target environments, etc.

Hole 1105A penetrated 158 m of gabbros at a site offset 1.3 km east-northeast from Hole 735B on the Atlantis Bank near the Atlantis II Fracture Zone. A total of 118 m of dominantly medium- to coarse-grained intercalated Fe-Ti oxide gabbro and olivine gabbro was recovered from Hole 1105A that shows many petrographic features similar to those recovered from the upper part of Hole 735B. The main rock types are distinguished based on the constituent cumulus phases, with the most primitive gabbros consisting of olivine, plagioclase, and clinopyroxene. The inferred crystallization order is subsequently Fe-Ti oxides (ilmenite and titanomagnetite), followed by orthopyroxene, then apatite, and finally biotite. Orthopyroxene appears to replace olivine in a narrow middle interval. The magmatic evolution is likewise reflected in the mineral compositions. Plagioclase varies from An66 to An28. Olivine varies from Fo78 to Fo35. The gap in olivine crystallization occurs between Fo46 and Fo40 and coincides approximately with the appearance of orthopyroxene (~En50). The clinopyroxenes show large compositional variation in Mg/(Mg + Fe total) from 0.84 to 0.51. The nonquadrilateral cations of clinopyroxene similarly show large variations with Ti increasing for the olivine gabbros and decreasing for the Fe-Ti oxide gabbros with the decrease in Mg/(Mg + Fe total). The apatites are mainly flourapatites. The compositional variation in the gabbros is interpreted as a comagmatic suite resulting from fractional crystallization. Pyroxene geothermometry suggests equilibration temperatures from 1100°C and below. The coexisting Fe-Ti oxide minerals indicate subsolidus equilibration temperatures from 900°C for olivine gabbros to 700°C for the most evolved apatite-bearing gabbros. The cryptic variation in the olivine gabbros defines two or three lenses, 40 to 60 m thick, each characterized by a distinct convex zoning with a lower segment indicating upward reverse fractionation, a central maximum, and an upper segment showing normal fractionation. The Fe-Ti oxide gabbros show cryptic variations independent of the host olivine gabbros and reveal a systematic upward normal fractionation trend transgressing host olivine gabbro boundaries. Forward fractional crystallization modeling, using a likely parental magma composition from the Atlantis II Fracture Zone (MgO = 7.2 wt%; Mg/[Mg + Fe2+] = 0.62), closely matches the compositions of coexisting olivine, plagioclase, and clinopyroxene. This modeling suggests cosaturation of olivine, plagioclase, and clinopyroxene from 1155°C and the addition of Fe-Ti oxides from 1100°C. The liquid line of descent initially shows increasing FeO with moderately increasing SiO2. After saturation of Fe-Ti oxides, the liquid strongly decreases in FeO and TiO2 and increases in SiO2, reaching dacitic compositions at ~10% liquid remaining. The calculations indicate that formation of olivine gabbros can be accounted for by <65% fractionation and that only the residual 35% liquid was saturated in Fe-Ti oxides. The modeling of the solid fractionation products shows that both the olivine gabbro and the Fe-Ti oxide gabbros contain very small amounts of trapped liquid (<5%). The implications are that the gabbros represent crystal mush that originated in a recharging and tapping subaxial chamber. Compaction and upward melt migration in the crystal mush appear to have been terminated with relatively large amounts of interstitial liquid remaining in the upper parts of the cumulate mush. This termination may have been caused by tectonic disturbances, uplift, and associated withdrawal of magma into the subaxial dike and sill system. Prolonged compaction and cooling of the trapped melt in the mush formed small differentiated bodies and lenses by pressure release migration and crystallization along syntectonic channels. This resulted in differentiation products along lateral and vertical channelways in the host gabbro that vary from olivine gabbro, to Fe-Ti oxide gabbro, gabbronorite, and apatite gabbros and show large compositional variations independent of the host olivine gabbros.

Microthermometric and isotopic analyses of fluid inclusions in primitive olivine gabbros, oxide gabbros, and evolved granitic material recovered from Ocean Drilling Program Hole 735B at the Southwest Indian Ridge provide new insights into the evolution of C-O-H-NaCl fluids in the plutonic foundation of the oceanic crust. The variably altered and deformed plutonic rocks span a crustal section of over 1500 m and record a remarkably complex magma-hydrothermal history. Magmatic fluids within this suite followed two chemically distinct paths during cooling through the subsolidus regime: the first path included formation of CO2+CH4+H2O+C fluids with up to 43 mole% CH4; the second path produced hypersaline brines that contain up to 50% NaCl equivalent salinities. Subsequent to devolatilization, respeciation of magmatic CO2, attendant graphite precipitation, and cooling from 800°C to 500°C promoted formation of CH4-enriched fluids. These fluids are characterized by average d13C(CH4) values of -27.1+/-4.3 per mil (N=45) with associated d13C(CO2) compositions ranging from -24.9 per mil to -1.9 per mil (N=39), and average dD values of exsolved vapor of -41+/-12 per mil (N=23). In pods, veins, and lenses of highly fractionated residual material, hypersaline brines formed during condensation and by direct exsolution in the absence of a conjugate vapor phase. Entrapped CO2+CH4+H2O-rich fluids within many oxide-bearing rocks and felsic zones are significantly depleted in 13C (with d13C(CO2) values down to about -25 per mil) and contain CO2 concentrations higher than those predicted by equilibrium devolatilization models. We hypothesize that lower effective pressures in high-temperature shear zones promoted infiltration of highly fractionated melts and compositionally evolved volatiles into focused zones of deformation, significantly weakening the rock strength. In felsic-rich zones, volatile build-up may have driven hydraulic fracturing of gabbroic wall rocks resulting in the formation of magmatic breccias. Comparison of isotopic compositions of fluids in plutonic rocks from 735B, the MARK area of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, and the Mid-Cayman Rise indicate (1) that the carbon isotope composition of the lower oceanic crust may be far more heterogeneous than previously believed and (2) that carbon-bearing species in the oceanic crust and their distribution at depth are highly variable.

Four petrographic lava types occur, ranging from aphyric to moderately phyric clinopyroxene-olivine tholeiitic basalts (Unit 1); olivine-clinopyroxene picritic basalts, sparsely to strongly olivine-phyric (Unit 3-type); olivine-clinopyroxene basalts (clinopyroxene dominant) (Unit 4); and moderately to strongly phyric two-pyroxene-plagioclase basaltic andesites (Unit 9-type). The olivine phyric lavas contain forsteritic olivines (extending to Fo92), and very magnesian Cr-rich spinels similar to those occurring in boninitic lavas. The basaltic andesites are mineralogically and petrographically indistinguishable from the modern Tofua Arc basaltic andesites, one notable feature being the highly calcic cores in plagioclase phenocrysts (up to An95). The forsteritic olivines, the Cr-spinels, and the calcic plagioclases are unlikely to have been precipitated in the lava compositions in which they occur, and are thought to have been incorporated from highly primitive melts by way of mixing processes (as advocated by Allan, this volume). Notwithstanding the evidence for mixing, the major element chemistries of the Unit 1- and Unit 9-type lavas are shown to be consistent with the derivation of the Unit 9-type basaltic andesites by means of fractional crystallization, through magmas of similar chemistry to Unit 1. Some trace element discrepancies in the modeling, and the relative volcanic stratigraphy of Site 839, however, preclude a direct liquid line of descent between the actual recovered units. Trace element data as well as TiO2 and Na2O data clearly illustrate the arc-like affinities of the magmas, with strong highfield-strength element depletion and large-ion-lithophile element enrichment. The abundance patterns are very close to those of the Tofua and Kermadec arc magmas, and also Valu Fa. Pb-, Sr-, and Nd-isotopic compositions indicate closest affinities with a "Pacific" MORB source, apparently characteristic of the western, older part of the Lau Basin. A subduction-related isotopic contribution is, however, inferred. The sources of the Site 839 magmas are thus inferred to be similar to, but less depleted geochemically, than those of the modern Tofua Arc magmas. The Site 839 sequence is interpreted as an older remnant of a volcanic construct of the "proto-Tofua arc", originally developed adjacent to the Tonga Ridge. Opening of the eastern Lau Basin, because of southward migrating propagators, has split and isolated the sequence, leaving it stranded within the modern Lau Basin.
