Globalization and culture shaping the gender gap: A comparative analysis of urban Latin America and East Asia (1970 - 2000)

In this paper we present: 1. The available data on comparative gender inequality at themacroeconomic level and 2. Gender inequality measures at the microeconomic and case studylevel. We see that market openness has a significant effect on the narrowing of the human capitalgender gap. Globalization and market openness stand as factors that improve both the humancapital endowments of women and their economic position. But we also see that the effects ofculture and religious beliefs are very different. While Catholicism has a statistically significantinfluence on the improvement of the human capital gender gap, Muslim and Buddhist religiousbeliefs have the opposite effect and increase human capital gender differences.In the second global era, some Catholic Latin American countries benefited from market opennessin terms of the human capital and income gender gap, whereas we find the opposite impact inBuddhist and Muslim countries like China and South Korea where women s economic positionhas worsened in terms of human capital and wage inequality.

Características hidroquímicas en la bahía de Chancay durante el período de intensa actividad pesquera. Octubre 1999

Presenta los resultados del estudio realizado los días 06 y 07 de octubre de 1999, en la bahía de Chancay, sobre la determinación de las características hidroquímicas. Describe que la bahía de Chancay viene sufriendo el impacto proveniente de las descargas de las actividades industriales pesqueras y domésticas de la población, lo que origina serios problemas de contaminación del ambiente marino, ocurriendo cambios y variaciones significativas en las características hidroquímicas del agua del mar, referídas a nutrientes y amoniaco.

Estudio sedimentológico y geoquímico en la bahía de Chancay. Setiembre 1999

Presenta los resultados del estudio sedimentológico realizado el 06 de setiembre de 1999 en la bahía de Chancay. Describe el sedimento del fondo encontrado conformado principalmente por arena y limo; la zona litoral de la bahía se caracteriza por tener sedimentos arenosos, a excepción de la zona norte de la bahía, donde se obtuvo arcilla limosa; en la zona central se localizaron los sedimentos más finos conformados por arena limosa y limo arenoso.

Correlation between placental bacterial culture results and histological chorioamnionitis: a prospective study on 376 placentas.

OBJECTIVE: To study the correlation between the bacteriological and histopathological findings in placentas from women with suspected or proven chorioamnionitis (CA). METHODS: Over a 1-year period, 376 placentas were prospectively collected and processed for bacteriological and pathological studies in cases of confirmed or suspected maternal or neonatal infection. RESULTS: Histological CA was diagnosed in 26.9% of placentas (101/376), and 27.7% (28/101) of these placentas had positive bacteriological cultures. A monomicrobial culture, mainly represented by Gram-positive cocci and Gram-negative bacilli, was identified in 27% of the positive bacterial cultures. The proportion of positive cultures was higher (p=0.03) when CA was associated with funisitis, as compared with placental samples with early CA. In placentas without histological CA, bacteriological cultures were mostly negative (230/275), although pathogenic bacteria were identified in 16.3% of them (45/275). CONCLUSIONS: The histological and bacteriological results were concordant in about 70% of the examined placentas, with 61.1% negative cases (CA absent and negative bacterial cultures), and only 7.4% placentas with positive histological and bacteriological results. Discordant results (positive histology with negative bacteriology) were obtained in placentas with early CA documented by histology although possibly in relation with antibiotic prophylaxis and the presence of fastidious bacteria. Conversely, negative histology with positive bacteriology could be explained by the presence of an early-stage bacterial infection that has not yet led to detectable microscopic lesions.

D'où vient la fascination de l'auteur des Actes des apôtres pour le voyage et les voyageurs? Luc a fait du voyage un thème narratif de première importance: les héros de Luc-Actes sont sans cesse en mouvement. Contrairement à l'idée que Luc a hérité ce thème du roman grec, Daniel Marguerat montre que le motif du voyage traverse l'ensemble de la culture gréco-romaine (récits de fondation de colonie, récits d'exploration, Vies de philosophes, etc). Une riche sémantique se déploie dans les Actes où voyage devient synonyme de conquête, d'aventure, d'universalité, de quête identitaire et de parcours initiatique.

Working with Iowans building a culture of conservation, Program Summary, November 2008

Over 94% of Iowa ’ s land is held in private ownership, and the programs of the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship Division of Soil Conservation (IDALS-DSC) have been established to work with these landowners. Over 90% of the landscape is used for agricultural production so much of our focus is in rural communities, but we haven’t overlooked the importance of land management in urban areas. It is crucial to understanding of both conservation and hydrology issues, that what happens on the landscape has immense consequences to the environmental health of our state and the quality of life we enjoy. IDALS-DSC is striving to integrate our programs with other agencies and local concerns to improve water and local concerns to improve water and soil quality throughout the state and nation.
