The effect of Cu2+ contents and of firing temperature on sintering and crystallite growth of nanocrystalline SnO2 xerogels was analyzed by thermoanalysis (mass loss (TG), linear shrinkage, and differential thermal analysis (DTA)), X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD), and EXAFS (extended X-ray absorption fine structures) measurements. Samples were prepared by two methods: (a) coprecipitation of a colloidal suspension from aqueous solution containing both Sn(IV) and Cu(II) ions and (b) grafting copper(II) species on the surface of tin pride gel. The thermoanalysis has shown that the shrinkage associated with the mass loss decreases by increasing the amount of copper. The EXAFS measurements carried out at the Cu K edge have evidenced the presence of copper in substitutional solid solution for the dried xerogel prepared with 0.7 mol % of copper, while for higher concentration of doping, copper has been observed also at the external surface of crystallites. The solid solution is metastable and copper migrates toward the surface during firing. The XRPD and DTA results have shown a recrystallization process near 320 degrees C, which leads to crystallite growth. The presence of copper segregated near the crystallite surface controls its growth.

Labile metal species in aquatic humic substances (HSs) were characterized by ion exchange on cellulose phosphate (CellPhos) by applying an optimized batch procedure. The HSs investigated were pre-extracted from humic-rich waters by ultrafiltration and a resin XAD 8 procedure. The HS-metal species studied were formed by complexation with Cd(II), Ni(II), Cu(II), Mn(II) and Pb(II) as a function of time and the ratio ions to HSs. The kinetics and reaction order of this exchange process were studied. At the beginning (<3 min), the labile metal fractions are separated relatively quickly. After 3 min, the separation of the metal ions proceeds with uniform half-lives of about 12-14 min, revealing rather slow first-order kinetics. The metal exchange between HSs and CellPhos exhibited the following order of metal lability with the studied HSs: Cu > Pb > Mn > Ni > Cd. The required metal determinations were carried out by atomic absorption spectrometry.

Silica gel, chemically modified with 2,5-dimercapto-1,3,4-thiadiazole [=Si(CH2)(3)-NC2HNS3], abbreviated as SiB, was used to adsorb metal ions from ethanol by both batch and column techniques. Elution of Cu(II) was done with a solvent mixture of acetone and hydrochloric acid (9:1 v/v). Zn(II), Cd(II), Ni(II), Pb(II), Co(II) and Fe(III) were eluted with 0.5 mol l(-1) HC1 in ethanol solution. The modified silica was applied in the preconcentration of metal ions from commercial ethanol, normally used as engine fuel. The method is suitable for quantifying these metals at low mu g l(-1) levels.

The brown alga Pilayella littoralis was used as a new biosorbent in an on-line metal preconcentration procedure in a flow-injection system. Al, Co, Cu and Fe were determined in lake water samples by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) after preconcentration in a silica-immobilized alga column. Like other algae, P. littoralis exhibited strong affinity for these metals proving to be an effective accumulation medium. Metals were bound at pH 5.5 and were displaced at pH < 2 with diluted HCl. The enrichment factors for Cu-II, Fe-III, Al-III and Co-II were 13, 7, 16 and 11, respectively. Metal sorption efficiency ranged from 86 to 90%. The method accuracy was assessed by using drinking water certified reference material and graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry (GFAAS) as a comparison technique. The column procedure allowed a less time consuming, easy regeneration of the biomaterial and rigidity of the alga provided by its immobilization on silica gel. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. The construction of a flow-through cell incorporating an array of gold microelectrodes is described and its application to flow injection analysis with amperometric detection is presented, Simple modification of almost any conventional integrated circuit chip, used as an inexpensive source of pre-assembled gold micro-wires, leads to the rapid and successful preparation of arrays of 8-48 elements, the polymeric encapsulation material from the top face of the chip is removed by abrasion until the gold micro-mires (used to interconnect the silicon circuit to the external contact pins of the chip) are disrupted and their transversal (elliptical) sections become exposed. Once polished, the flat and smooth top surface of the gold microelectrode-array chip (MEAC) is provided with a spacer and fitted under pressure against an acrylic block with the reference and auxiliary electrodes, to form the electrochemical (thin-layer) flow cell, while the contact pins are plugged into a standard IC socket, This design ensures autonomous electric contact with each electrode and allows fast dismantling for polishing or substitution, the performance of flow cells with MEACs was investigated utilizing the technique of reverse pulse amperometry without oxygen removal, A method was established for the determination of the copper concentration in sugar cane spirit, regulated by law for beverages, Samples from industrial producers and small-scale (alembic) brewers were compared, With a 24 MEAC, a detection limit of 30 mu g I-l of copper (4.7 x 10(-7) mol l(-1) of Cu-II for 100 mu l injections) was calculated, Routine operation was established at a frequency of 60-90 determinations per hour, Intercomparison with atomic absorption spectrometric determinations resulted in excellent agreement.

The protonation of 4-dimethylaminobenzylidenepyruvate (DMBP) and 2-chloro-4-dimethylaminobenzylidenepyruvate (2-CI-DMBP) and their complex formation with Mn(II), Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II), Zn(II), Pb(II), Cd(II) and Al(III) have been studied by potentiometric and spectrophotometric methods at 25 °C and ionic strength 0.500 M, held with sodium perchlorate. The stability order found for 1 :1 complexes of both ligands is Al(III) > Cu(II) > Pb(II) > Ni(II) > Zn(II) > Co(II) > Cd(II) > Mn(II). The stability changes move in the same direction as the pKa of the ligands. The results are compared with literature values reported for metal ion pyruvate systems. Thermodynamic stabilities of ternary complexes formed in Cu(II)-B-L- systems, where B = 2,2′-bipyridyl (bipy), ethylenediamine or glycinate and L = DMBP or 2-CI-DMBP, were also determined. The Cu(bipy)L+ species are more stable than would be expected on purely statistical grounds. The importance of the :t system associated with bipy on the enhanced stability of its mixed ligand complexes is stressed. Analytical applications of the investigated ligands are outlined.

2-Mercaptobenzothiazole loaded on previously treated clay was prepared, characterized and used for sorption and preconcentration of Hg(II), Pb(II), Zn(II), Cd(II), Cu(II) and Mn(II) from an aqueous solution. The support used was a natural clay previously treated with sulphuric acid solution. Adsorption isotherms of metal ions from aqueous solutions as function of pH were studied at 298 K. Conditions for quantitative retention and elution were established for each metal by batch and column methods. The chemically treated clay was very selective to Hg(II) in solution in which Zn(II), Cd(II), Pb(II), Cu(II) and Mn(II) were also present. © 1995.

The protonation constants of 4-methylbenzylidenepyruvate (4Me-BP) and 4-isopropylbenzylidenepyruvate (4IP-BP) as well as the stability constants of their binary 1:1 complexes with Cu(II), La(III), Pr(III), Sm(III), Eu(III), Yb(III), Sc(III) and Th(IV) have been determined spectrophotometrically in aqueous solution at 25°C and ionic strength 0.500 M, maintained with sodium perchlorate. For all metal ions considered, the stability changes move in the same direction as the pKa of the ligands. Linear free energy relationships, as applied to oxygen donor substances, suggest the -COCOO- moiety as the metal binding site of the ligands. The results are discussed mainly taking into account that benzylidenepyruvates, besides the α-keto canonical form, may display other forms in aqueous solution with changing pH and the possible occurrence of extra intra-ligand charge polarization, induced by metal ions.

Cellulose phosphate (CELLPHOS) was studied as a collector for analytical preconcentration of traces of Cd(II), Cr(III), Cu(II) and Ni(II) from aqueous sample solution. It has been proved that using chromatographic columns packed with CELLPHOS for preconcentration and 1.0 mol 1 -1 HCl for elution the adsorbed analytes are quantitatively enriched. An enrichment factor of 20 (100 ml sample, 5 ml concentrate) was achieved by this separation procedure, which was applied to a series of water analyses (river, sea, bog water).

This work describes the synthesis and characterization of 5-amino-1,3,4-thiadiazole-2-thiol modified silica gel (SiATT), and the results of a study of the adsorption and preconcentration (in batch, and in flow using a column technique) of Cd(II), Co(II), Cu(II), Fe(III), Ni(II), Pb(II) and Zn(II) in ethanol medium. The adsorption capacities for each metal ion were (in mmol g -1): Cd(II) = 0.11, Co(II) = 0.10, Cu(II) = 0.20, Fe(III) = 0.20, Ni(II) = 0.16, Pb(II) = 0.08 and Zn(II) = 0.12. The results obtained in the flow experiments, showed a recovery of ca. 100% of the metal ions adsorbed in a column packed with 2 g of SiATT, using 5 mL of 2.0 mol L -1 HCl solution as eluent. The sorption-desorption of the metal ions made possible the development of a preconcentration method and quantification by Flame AAS of metal ions at trace level in fuel ethanol.
