Annotated almanac, 1789

Almanac interleaved with pages containing household account entries and containing annotations on the calendar pages. Some of the annotations are illegible. The interleaved pages contain entries of baptisms and burials, accounting records and notes of household activities, including entries related to boarders.

Covered in torn 1802 magazine print; title page missing. Handwritten note on top of first page: "Catalogue of the men Educated at Harvard College." Infrequent annotations in an unknown hand, typically noting alumni who became governors, or who held other high public offices. There are some annotations with places of residence.

There are handwritten asterisks next to the names of alumni who died after the Catalogue's publication through 1785. The 1781 class list includes the annotations for "Tutor."

Qui ad imum classium à caeteris, lineâ interpositâ, separantur, alibi instituti suerunt, vel apud nos gradu honorario donati.

The Harvard University Archives' shelflist indicates the annotations were made by "S. Willard." A handwritten 20th century note removed from the volume stated "Sidney Willard Annotated Triennial." The origin and accuracy of this attribution is unknown. The pamphlet includes sporadic annotations with locations of ministry for clergymen. For the Classes of 1784-1787 "Mr" has been added to graduates who received an AM.

Minimal annotations for the years 1728 through 1732, noting residences for seven names and a footnote that James Pitt (AB 1731) "married Gov. Bowdoin's sister, [mat. in Boston]." From 1759 onward, there are handwritten asterisks next to the names of alumni who died after the Catalogue's publication through the mid 1810s. For the years 1781 and 1782, a "P" appears to mark members of Phi Beta Kappa. Pages unattached.

"Interleaved Catalogue of 1797"--handwritten title on flyleaf. Interleaved Catalogue in hardcover binding, with numbers next to the printed names matching biographical notes on interleaved pages for every class from 1642 through the first four listed members of the Class of 1726; there are no annotations for subsequent classes.

Bills Dr. to Tho. Adams late Coll. Butler, 1791

The paper-covered book contains a two column debit and credit entry section for students created by Thomas Adams and updated by Samuel Shapleigh for the Classes of 1792 through 1794. The final page includes the note, "The above is the Balance due to me as Butler of College- Cambridge Novr 15, 1791--Tho Adams." The book includes annotations made at a later date noting students not found in other College records. The cover of the book features an engraving of a young woman in profile.

Paper wrapper formerly used to bundle records related to Nathan Prince, undated

Recto of wrapper reads: "Oct. 31, 1740 to June 24, 1742. Papers relative to the charges against & defence made by Nathan Prince in 1741. Examined & done with." Verso reads "Hon. President [Josiah] Quincy." These annotations suggest that the records in this collection were consulted by Quincy, who served as Harvard's President from 1829 to 1845. It is likely that he used them when writing his two-volume History of Harvard University, which includes a lengthy passage about Prince and his trials at Harvard.

Bond of Samuel Shapleigh to Ebenezer Bradish, July 1, 1793

Although it is known that Bradish was a tavern keeper in Cambridge, the circumstances precipitating this bond are unclear. Shapleigh's name has been cut out from the bottom of the document. It was "signed, sealed and delivered" in the presence of John Warland and Raham Richardson. Annotations on the verso indicate payments made in 1795 and 1796.

Lists of books donated by John Barnard of Marblehead, undated

This folder contains two lists. One list, much more lengthy, records books Barnard donated to the Harvard College Library on a range of topics. Entries include format, title, author, and publication year and location; many entries have pencilled annotations and one page lists "Books I sent for from London." The value of Barnard's donations in Sterling are occasionally noted. The second document is a list of medical books imported from London for Harvard's library.

A collection of the most approved pieces of music from various authors: transcribed while member of Harvard University, from July 1789 to July 1793

John Pierce kept this journal while he was a student at Harvard College. It consists of manuscript musical scores with annotations indicating the occasions at which the music was performed. These occasions included commencements, public exhibitions and Dudleian lectures. A note indicates that one anthem was prepared by Samuel Holyoke at Pierce's request, to be performed at Pierce's class commencement exercises, held on July 13, 1793. Several annotations were made in May 1794, the year following Pierce's graduation. There is a table of contents on the last page.

Collection of Harvard College admission form letter and bills sent to Charles Walker and his son Charles Walker, Jr., 1785-1816

This collection consists primarily of quarter bills and butler's bills from Charles Walker and Charles Walker, Jr.'s years as students at Harvard College, from 1785 to 1789 and from 1815-1816. It includes the following materials from Charles Walker: a form of admission (a printed form letter with manuscript annotations and signatures) from August 1785, quarter bills and butler's bills from 1785 to 1789, and occasional receipts of payment. The documents from Charles Walker, Jr. are less numerous, consisting solely of quarter bills from 1815 and 1816. The bills for father and son include annotations explaining the basis of additional or unusual charges, including fines for absence from lectures and prayers. The form used for the son's quarter bills, issued in 1815 and 1816, separate the amounts owed into the following categories: Steward and Commons, Sizings, Study and Cellar Rent, Instruction, Librarian, Natural History, Episcopal Church, Books, Catalogue and Commencement Dinner, Repairs, Sweepers, Assessments for delinquency in payment of Quarter Bills, Wood, and Fines. All of the bills are printed forms which were then filled out by hand, by either the steward or the butler, and issued to the students. Caleb Gannett was the College steward during both father and son's era. Joshua Paine, William Harris, and Thomas Adams served, successively, as butler during the father's era. Some of the butler's bills are signed by Roger Vose, a student who appears to have been employed by the butler in 1786 and 1787.

A poem delivered at Harvard College, September 29th, 1789

Eight-page untitled handwritten poem attributed to Harvard student Benjamin Whitwell (Harvard AB 1790). The poem begins “The brow of age is soften’d into smiles” and contains classical and militaristic allusions. An annotation indicates that a set of stanzas beginning, “On thee, our common parent! Guardian! Friend! His mildest warmth, his brightest beams descend….” refers to Harvard President Joseph Willard. The text includes edits and annotations.
