Tumors in non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) patients are often proximal to the major blood vessels in the abdomen or neck. In external-beam radiotherapy, these tumors present a challenge because imaging resolution prevents the beam from being targeted to the tumor lesion without also irradiating the artery wall. This problem has led to potentially life-threatening delayed toxicity. Because radioimmunotherapy has resulted in long-term survival of NHL patients, we investigated whether the absorbed dose (AD) to the artery wall in radioimmunotherapy of NHL is of potential concern for delayed toxicity. SPECT resolution is not sufficient to enable dosimetric analysis of anatomic features of the thickness of the aortic wall. Therefore, we present a model of aortic wall toxicity based on data from 4 patients treated with (131)I-tositumomab. METHODS: Four NHL patients with periaortic tumors were administered pretherapeutic (131)I-tositumomab. Abdominal SPECT and whole-body planar images were obtained at 48, 72, and 144 h after tracer administration. Blood-pool activity concentrations were obtained from regions of interest drawn on the heart on the planar images. Tumor and blood activity concentrations, scaled to therapeutic administered activities-both standard and myeloablative-were input into a geometry and tracking model (GEANT, version 4) of the aorta. The simulated energy deposited in the arterial walls was collected and fitted, and the AD and biologic effective dose values to the aortic wall and tumors were obtained for standard therapeutic and hypothetical myeloablative administered activities. RESULTS: Arterial wall ADs from standard therapy were lower (0.6-3.7 Gy) than those typical from external-beam therapy, as were the tumor ADs (1.4-10.5 Gy). The ratios of tumor AD to arterial wall AD were greater for radioimmunotherapy by a factor of 1.9-4.0. For myeloablative therapy, artery wall ADs were in general less than those typical for external-beam therapy (9.4-11.4 Gy for 3 of 4 patients) but comparable for 1 patient (32.6 Gy). CONCLUSION: Blood vessel radiation dose can be estimated using the software package 3D-RD combined with GEANT modeling. The dosimetry analysis suggested that arterial wall toxicity is highly unlikely in standard dose radioimmunotherapy but should be considered a potential concern and limiting factor in myeloablative therapy.

Skaalausmekanismin parametrien vaikutus simuloidun laitteen suorituskykyyn analysoitiin.

Diplomityössä tutkittiin muotopuristeissa käytettävien viilujen soveltuvuutta yhteistyöyrityksen, VK Valmiskaluste Oy:n, valmistaman lepotuolin materiaaliksi. Tuoliaihion muoto edellytti viilun taivuttamista kahteen suuntaan, eli kyseessä oli ns. 3D-muoto. Muotopuristeita valmistavissa yrityksissä tehtyjen haastattelujen perusteella valittiin viilumateriaalit ja mitattiin niiden murtovenymä. Materiaaleja testattiin puristamalla tuoliaihioita. Aihionmuoto edellytti viilulta vähintään 3,3 %:n venyvyyttä. Koepuristuksetvahvistivat murtovenymätestauksen tulokset, eli tutkitun aihion pintarakenne säilyi ehjänä käyttämällä paperitaustaista viilua tai 3D-muotoihin tarkoitettua 3D-viilua. Kirjallisuusosiossa on selvitetty taivutettavuuteen vaikuttavia tekijöitä ja viilun rakenteen muokkausta taivutettavuuden parantamiseksi .

Detailed geological mapping during the last 20 years in the Western Swiss Alps has shown clearly that most of the lower basement nappes are fold nappes possessing normal and inverted limbs. Moreover their cores are made of strongly deformed gneisses indicating that important ductile strain took place during the formation of the fold nappes. It is therefore probably wrong to imagine deep basement nappes as rigid slices as often actually claimed, especially when interpreting seismic profiles. True `brittle type' thrust nappes involving basement rocks only occur in the internal and upper parts of the belt. Cover nappes, on the contrary, are in most parts of the Alpine belt thrust sheets following more or less the rules of thin-skinned tectonics. Many basement fold nappes lost part of their sedimentary cover during or just before their formation, by decollement along ductile horizons. The result is that many cover thrust nappes in the external part of the Alps are directly related to their original basement fold nappes.

The aim of the present study is to determine the level of correlation between the 3-dimensional (3D) characteristics of trabecular bone microarchitecture, as evaluated using microcomputed tomography (μCT) reconstruction, and trabecular bone score (TBS), as evaluated using 2D projection images directly derived from 3D μCT reconstruction (TBSμCT). Moreover, we have evaluated the effects of image degradation (resolution and noise) and X-ray energy of projection on these correlations. Thirty human cadaveric vertebrae were acquired on a microscanner at an isotropic resolution of 93μm. The 3D microarchitecture parameters were obtained using MicroView (GE Healthcare, Wauwatosa, MI). The 2D projections of these 3D models were generated using the Beer-Lambert law at different X-ray energies. Degradation of image resolution was simulated (from 93 to 1488μm). Relationships between 3D microarchitecture parameters and TBSμCT at different resolutions were evaluated using linear regression analysis. Significant correlations were observed between TBSμCT and 3D microarchitecture parameters, regardless of the resolution. Correlations were detected that were strongly to intermediately positive for connectivity density (0.711≤r(2)≤0.752) and trabecular number (0.584≤r(2)≤0.648) and negative for trabecular space (-0.407 ≤r(2)≤-0.491), up to a pixel size of 1023μm. In addition, TBSμCT values were strongly correlated between each other (0.77≤r(2)≤0.96). Study results show that the correlations between TBSμCT at 93μm and 3D microarchitecture parameters are weakly impacted by the degradation of image resolution and the presence of noise.

The widespread implementation of GIS-based 3D topographical models has been a great aid in the development and testing of archaeological hypotheses. In this paper, a topographical reconstruction of the ancient city of Tarraco, the Roman capital of the Tarraconensis province, is presented. This model is based on topographical data obtained through archaeological excavations, old photographic documentation, georeferenced archive maps depicting the pre-modern city topography, modern detailed topographical maps and differential GPS measurements. The addition of the Roman urban architectural features to the model offers the possibility to test hypotheses concerning the ideological background manifested in the city shape. This is accomplished mainly through the use of 3D views from the main city accesses. These techniques ultimately demonstrate the ‘theatre-shaped’ layout of the city (to quote Vitrubius) as well as its southwest oriented architecture, whose monumental character was conceived to present a striking aspect to visitors, particularly those arriving from the sea.

Forecasting coal resources and reserves is critical for coal mine development. Thickness maps are commonly used for assessing coal resources and reserves; however they are limited for capturing coal splitting effects in thick and heterogeneous coal zones. As an alternative, three-dimensional geostatistical methods are used to populate facies distributionwithin a densely drilled heterogeneous coal zone in the As Pontes Basin (NWSpain). Coal distribution in this zone is mainly characterized by coal-dominated areas in the central parts of the basin interfingering with terrigenous-dominated alluvial fan zones at the margins. The three-dimensional models obtained are applied to forecast coal resources and reserves. Predictions using subsets of the entire dataset are also generated to understand the performance of methods under limited data constraints. Three-dimensional facies interpolation methods tend to overestimate coal resources and reserves due to interpolation smoothing. Facies simulation methods yield similar resource predictions than conventional thickness map approximations. Reserves predicted by facies simulation methods are mainly influenced by: a) the specific coal proportion threshold used to determine if a block can be recovered or not, and b) the capability of the modelling strategy to reproduce areal trends in coal proportions and splitting between coal-dominated and terrigenousdominated areas of the basin. Reserves predictions differ between the simulation methods, even with dense conditioning datasets. Simulation methods can be ranked according to the correlation of their outputs with predictions from the directly interpolated coal proportion maps: a) with low-density datasets sequential indicator simulation with trends yields the best correlation, b) with high-density datasets sequential indicator simulation with post-processing yields the best correlation, because the areal trends are provided implicitly by the dense conditioning data.

BACKGROUND: Radiofrequency (RF) ablation is used to obtain local control of unresectable tumors in liver, kidney, prostate, and other organs. Accurate data on expected size and geometry of coagulation zones are essential for physicians to prevent collateral damage and local tumor recurrence. The aim of this study was to develop a standardized terminology to describe the size and geometry of these zones for experimental and clinical RF. METHODS: In a first step, the essential geometric parameters to accurately describe the coagulation zones and the spatial relationship between the coagulation zones and the electrodes were defined. In a second step, standard terms were assigned to each parameter. RESULTS: The proposed terms for single-electrode RF ablation include axial diameter, front margin, coagulation center, maximal and minimal radius, maximal and minimal transverse diameter, ellipticity index, and regularity index. In addition a subjective description of the general shape and regularity is recommended. CONCLUSIONS: Adoption of the proposed standardized description method may help to fill in the many gaps in our current knowledge of the size and geometry of RF coagulation zones.

Lasertekniikkaa hyödyntävä 3D-kuvaustekniikka tuo uusia mahdollisuuksia robotilla suoritettavaan kasastapoimintaan. Kasasta otetun syvyyskuvan avulla tuotteista voidaan määrittää perinteisen XY-paikkatiedon lisäksi tuotteen korkeus- ja asentotieto. Näitä uusia ominaisuuksia hyödyntämällä robotilla voidaan suorittaa yksittäisen tuotteen poiminta kasasta eri korkeuksilta ja eri asennoista. Diplomityö kuuluu osana Master Automation Groupin ensimmäiseen 3D-tekniikkaan perustuvaan MAG PixCell 3D -robosoituun kappaleenkäsittelysoluun. Työn tavoitteena on kehittääsyvyyskuvan käsittelyyn algoritmeja, joiden avulla robotilla voidaan poimia yksitellen kasassa olevia metallisia saksen teriä.
