Layered Double Hydroxides are a class of materials that can be described as positively charged planar layers consisting of divalent and trivalent cations in the center of edge-sharing octahedra. The positive charge in the LDH layers must be compensated by anion intercalation. These materials have applications that include adsorption and/or sorption of anionic species. Cholic acid is one of the main acids produced by the liver. It promotes transport of lipids through aqueous systems. This work reports on the adsorption of Cholic acid anions in MgAl-CO3-LDH taking ionic strength, pH, and temperature effects into account. The adsorbent was characterized by different techniques. Cholate anion adsorption was performed at two different temperatures (298 and 323 K), two different ionic strength conditions (0.0 and 0.1 M of NaCl), and two different pH values (7.0 and 10.0). The results show that the sorption of Cholate anions in calcined LDH can remove a considerable amount of these anions from the medium. Cholate anion adsorption in the LDH with no calcining also occurs, but at a lower amount.

Aims: We evaluated the effect of botulinum toxin type A (BTX-A) injections in the trigone on the antireflux mechanism and evaluated its short-term efficacy. Materials and Methods: Between April and December 2006, 21 patients (10 men and 11 women) were prospectively evaluated. All were incontinent due to refractory NDO and underwent detrusor injection of 300 units of BTX-A, including 50 units into the trigone. Baseline and postoperative evaluation after eight weeks included cystogram, urinary tract ultrasound and urodynamics. Results: At baseline, 20 patients had no vesicoureteral (VUR) and one had grade II unilateral VUR. Postoperative evaluation revealed no cases of de novo VUR and the patient with preinjection VUR had complete resolution of the reflux. Ultrasound showed 5 (23.8%) patients with hydronephrosis before BTX-A injection and only one (4.8%) at the followup evaluation (p=0.066). After treatment, 9 (42.8%) patients became dry, 11 (52.4%) were improved and one (4.8%) had no improvement. Improved patients received antimuscarinic treatment and 8 (38.1%) became dry, with a final total continence rate of 80.1%. Cystometric capacity increased from 271 +/- 92 to 390 +/- 1189 ml (p = 0.002), reflex volume varied from 241 +/- 96 to 323 +/- 201 ml (p = 0.020) and maximum detrusor pressure reduced from 66 +/- 39 to 38 +/- 37 cm H2O (p < 0.001). Conclusions: Our results confirm the safety of trigone injections of BTX-A in terms of development of VUR and upper urinary tract damage. Whether they are beneficial for patients with NDO or other causes of voiding dysfunction will need further studies.

We present a new sample of Parkes half-jansky flat-spectrum radio sources, having made a particular effort to find any previously unidentified sources. The sample contains 323 sources selected according to a flux limit of 0.5 Jy at 2.7 GHz, a spectral index measured between 2.7 and 5.0 GHz of alpha(2.7/5.0) > -0.5, where S(nu) proportional to nu(alpha), Galactic latitude \b\ > 20 degrees and -45 degrees < declination (B1950) < +10 degrees. The sample was selected from a region 3.90 steradians in area. We have obtained accurate radio positions for all the unresolved sources in this sample, and combined these with accurate optical positions from digitized photographic sky survey data to check all the optical identifications. We report new identifications based on R- and Kn-band imaging and new spectroscopic measurements of many of the sources. We present a catalogue of the 323 sources, of which 321 now have identified optical counterparts and 277 have measured spectral redshifts.

A total of 53 patients aged 18-60 years with highintermediate or high-risk diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) were evaluated to analyze the impact of the cell of origin. Of 53 patients, 16 underwent autologous SCT (ASCT) in first remission and the rest received conventional chemotherapy. Immunohistochemistry was evaluated in 47 cases 17 were of germinal center (GC) origin and 30 were of non-GC origin. There was no survival difference between the two groups. Overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS) at 3 years were 93 and 83%, respectively, for the 14 patients who underwent ASCT. Their DFS was significantly better than that of patients who achieved CR but did not undergo ASCT. We conclude that ASCT is safe and improves the DFS of high-intermediate and high-risk DLBCL, regardless of the cell of origin. This observation should be confirmed in a larger study.

We examined the effects of polyarticular juvenile idiopathic arthritis (pJIA) serum on proliferation, differentiation, mineralization, and apoptosis of human osteoblast cells (hOb) in culture. The hOb were cultured with 10% serum from active pJIA and healthy controls (CT) and were tested for DNA synthesis, alkaline phosphatase (AP) activity, osteocalcin (OC) secretion, calcium levels, caspase 3 activity, and DNA fragmentation. None of the patients had used glucocorticoids for at least 1 month before the study, or any other drug that can affect bone mineral metabolism. Human inflammatory cytokine levels (IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, IL-1 beta, TNF-alpha, and IL-12p70) were measured in pJIA and CT sera. Low levels of AP activity was observed in pJIA cultures compared with CT cultures (67.16 +/- 53.35 vs 100.11 +/- 50.64 mu mol p-nitrophenol/h(-1) mg(-1) protein, P=0.008). There was also a significant decrease in OC secretion (9.23 +/- 5.63 vs 12.82 +/- 7.02 ng/mg protein, P=0.012) and calcium levels (0.475 +/- 0.197 vs 0.717 +/- 0.366 mmol/l, P=0.05) in pJIA hOb cultures. No difference was observed in cell proliferation (323.56 +/- 108.23 vs 328.91 +/- 88.03 dpm/mg protein, P=0.788). Osteoblasts cultured with JIA sera showed lower levels of DNA and increased fragmentation than osteoblasts cultured with CT sera. pJIA sera showed higher IL-6 values than CT (21.44 +/- 9.31 vs 3.58 +/- 2.38 pg/ml, P<0.001), but no difference was observed related to IL-8, IL-10, IL-1 beta, TNF-alpha, and IL-12p70 between pJIA and controls. This study suggests that serum from children with pJIA inhibits differentiation, mineralization and may increase apoptosis of hOb cultures, and inflammatory cytokines such as IL-6 might be a mechanism in this find. These results may represent an alternative therapeutic target for prevention and treatment of bone loss in JIA.

Background: Insulin resistance and obesity are recognized as left ventricular (LV) mass determinants independent of blood pressure (BP). Prevalence of LV hypertrophy (LVH) and the relationship between LV mass to body composition and metabolic variables were evaluated in normotensive individuals as participants of a population-based study. Methods: LV mass was measured using the second harmonic image by M-mode 2D guided echocardiography in 326 normotensive subjects (mean 47 +/- 9.4 years). Fasting serum lipids and glucose, BP, body composition and waist circumference (WC) were recorded during a clinic visit. Results: Applying a normalization criterion not related to body weight (g/height raised to the power 2.7) and the cut-off points of 47.7 (men) and 46.6 g/m(2.7) (women), LVH was found in 7.9% of the sample. Univariate analysis showed LV mass (g/m(2.7)) related to age, body mass index (BMI), WC, fat and lean body mass, systolic and diastolic BP, and metabolic variables (cholesterol, HDL-c, triglycerides and glucose). In multivariate analysis only BMI and age-adjusted systolic BP remained as independent predictors of LV mass, explaining 31% and 5% of its variability. Removing BMI from the model, WC, age-adjusted systolic BP and lean mass remained independent predictors, explaining 25.0%, 4.0% and 1.5% of LV mass variability, respectively. After sex stratification, LV mass predictors were WC (8%) and systolic BP (5%) in men and WC (36%) and systolic BP (3%) in women. Conclusion: BMI in general and particularly increased abdominal adiposity (WC as surrogate) seems to account for most of LV mass increase in normotensive individuals, mainly in women. Plasma clearance of (51)Cr-EDTA ((51)Cr-EDTA-Cl) is an alternative method to evaluate glomerular filtration rate (GFR). This study aimed to investigate the concordance between (51)Cr-EDTA-Cl and renal inulin clearance (In-Cl) in renal transplant recipients as well to determine the repeatability of (51)Cr-EDTA-Cl in kidney donors. Forty four kidney recipients and 22 kidney donors were enrolled. Simultaneous measurements of (51)Cr-EDTA-Cl and In-Cl were performed. A single dose of 3.7MBq of (51)Cr-EDTA was injected and the plasma disappearance curve was created by taking blood samples at 2, 4, 6 and 8 h after injection. Bland and Altman statistical approach was used to quantify the agreement between In-Cl and (51)Cr-EDTA-Cl and to determine the better concordance between all possibilities of measure for the (51)Cr-EDTA-Cl. The mean of In-Cl was 44.5 +/- 17.9 ml/min/1.73 m(2). There was a positive correlation between In-Cl and all possible measurements of (51)Cr-EDTA-Cl. (51)Cr-EDTA-Cl with two samples taken at 4 and 8 h or at 4 and 6 h presenting the narrow limits of agreement and a difference (bias) of 2.8 and 2.7 ml/min, respectively. Two plasma sampling for (51)Cr-EDTA-Cl was a reliable method to measure GFR compared with In-Cl and comprises a suitable method to be used in kidney transplanted patients.

Contents Sex pre-selection of bovine offsprings has commercial relevance for cattle breeders and several methods have been used for embryo sex determination. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) has proven to be a reliable procedure for accomplishing embryo sexing. To date, most of the PCR-specific primers are derived from the few single-copy Y-chromosome-specific gene sequences already identified in bovines. Their detection demands higher amounts of embryonic genomic material or a nested amplification reaction. In order to circumvent this, limitation we searched for new male-specific sequences potentially useful in embryo sexing using random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) analysis. Random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) assay reproducibility problems can be overcome by its conversion into Sequence Characterized Amplified Region (SCAR) markers. In this work, we describe the identification of two bovine male-specific markers (OPC16(323) and OPF10(1168)) by means of RAPD. These markers were successfully converted into SCARs (OPC16(726) and OPF10(984)) using two pairs of specific primers.Furthermore, inverse PCR (iPCR) methodology was successfully applied to elongate OPC16(323) marker in 159% (from 323 to 837 bp). Both markers are shown to be highly conserved (similarity >= 95%) among bovine zebu and taurine cattle; OPC16(323) is also highly similar to a bubaline Y-chromosome-specific sequence. The primers derived from the two Y-chromosome-specific conserved sequences described in this article showed 100% accuracy when used for identifying male and female bovine genomic DNA, thereby proving their potential usefulness for bovine embryo sexing.

Introduction: Although obsessions and compulsions comprise the main features of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), many patients report that their compulsions are preceded by a sense of ""incompleteness"" or other unpleasant feelings such as premonitory urges or a need perform action`s until feeling ""just right."" These manifestations have been characterized as Sensory Phenomena (SP). The current study presents initial psychometric data for a new scale designed to measure SP. Methods: Seventy-six adult OCD subjects were probed twice. Patients were assessed with an open clinical interview (considered as the ""gold standard"") and with the following standardized instruments: Structured Clinical Interview for Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition Axis I Disorders, Yale-Brown Obsessive-Compulsive Scale, Dimensional Yale-Brown Obsessive-Compulsive Scale, Yale Global Tic Severity Scale, Beck Anxiety Inventory, and Beck Depression Inventory. Results: SP were present in 51 OCD patients (67.1%). Tics were present in 16 (21.1%) of the overall sample. The presence of SP was significantly higher in early-onset OCD patients. There were no significant differences in the presence of SP according to comorbidity with tics or gender. The comparison between the results from the open clinical interviews and the University of Sao Paulo Sensory Phenomena Scale (USP-SPS) showed an excellent concordance between them, with no significant differences between interviewers. The inter-rater reliability between the expert raters for the USP-SPS was high, with K=.92. The Pearson correlation coefficient between the SP severity scores given by the two raters was .89. Conclusion: Preliminary results suggest that the USP-SPS is a valid and reliable instrument for assessing the presence and severity of SP in OCD subjects. CNS Spectr. 2009;14(6):315-323

In immediate fire deaths, pulmonary injury may be the main source of mortality, being important to document the histologic findings for the purpose of excluding other modes of death, such as from asphyxia with no gross findings. In this context, a group of morphologic determinants have been targeted with useful makers of pulmonary injury. To facilitate the determination of whether an individual was deceased before the start of a fire and validate the importance of parenchymal alterations in pulmonary injury in fire deaths, we studied lungs in victims of fire (N = 28) and suffocation (N = 40), creating a mathematical model using cluster analysis. For this purpose, a semiquantitative analysis of the distal parenchyma was performed to evaluate the amount of bronchiolar dilatation, overinsufflation (ductal and alveolar), collapse (ductal and alveolar), passive congestion, alveolar edema, and hemorrhage (interstitial and alveolar). These 7 histologic determinants were useful to discriminate fire (bronchiolar dilatation, ductal overinsuflation, alveolar overinsuflation, alveolar hemorrhage) from suffocation lung injuries (alveolar collapse, congestion, and edema). We conclude that these determinants should be included in the routine of forensic pathology.

Oral mucosal melanoma is rare and reported to be more aggressive than its cutaneous counterpart. Due to the rarity of this entity, data on epidemiology, tumor behavior, treatment, follow-up, and Survival of patients are mainly based oil single case reports. The few existing series of patients show that oral mucosa melanoma has its peak between 4 1 and 60 years of age, and male to female ratio is 2: 1. Preferred oral sites include hard palate and maxillary alveolar crests. Risk factors have not been clearly identified, and surgical treatment is still the treatment of choice for oral mucosal melanomas. The authors retrospectively studied 35 patients with primary melanoma of the oral cavity to report their clinical and pathological features, Such as age, sex, site of the tumor, metastasis, treatment, response to therapy, and Outcome. We found no significant sex predominance, and the mean age of the patients was 60.6 years, with a range From 9 to 91 years. The majority of the patients (71.42%) had palate commitment, and invasive histopathological aspect was observed in 80% of the specimens (grade 3). Long-distance metastasis was found in 60% of the cases. Fourteen patients were submitted to wide Surgical resections, with local relapse being observed in 11 of them (78.5%). The authors Suggest that improved outcome in oral malignant melanoma requires the development of new therapies and the prevention of distant metastasis.

In this Letter we study the process of gluon fusion into a pair of Higgs bosons in a model with one universal extra dimension. We find that the contributions from the extra top quark Kaluza-Klem excitations lead to a Higgs pair production cross section at the LHC that can be significantly altered compared to the Standard Model value for small values of the compactification scale. Background: Double-balloon enteroscopy (DBE) allows evaluation and therapy for various small bowel diseases. In this series the outcome of a 4-year experience in a tertiary hospital school in Brazil is reported. Methods: A total of 457 consecutive DBE were performed in 418 patients from August 2004 to August 2008. 93 patients with several indications, whose aim was not the evaluation of suspected diseases of the small bowel mucosa, were excluded, therefore leaving 364 DBE in 325 patients for analysis. Data were retrospectively collected with regard to clinical, endoscopic findings, therapy and complications. Results: Among the 364 DBE performed in 325 patients, 143/325 were males (44%) and 182/325 females (56%) with a mean age of 48.6 +/- 15.7 years (range 17-89). Mean investigation time was 64 +/- 22 min (range 35-135). The depth of insertion beyond the ligament of Treitz was 230 +/- 85 cm (range 30-500) by the antegrade approach and 140 +/- 75 cm (range 0-320) by the retrograde approach. Total enteroscopy was achieved in 41.66% of the attempts (30 of 72 patients). Overall diagnostic yield was 54.95% (200 of 364 procedures) ranging from 0 to 100% in this series, depending on the indication. Angiodysplasia was the main diagnosis in 24.5% (49 of 200 procedures) and endoscopic treatment, including biopsies, hemostasis, tattooing and polypectomy were performed in 65.38% (238 of 364 procedures). No major complications were reported. Conclusions: DBE is a feasible, safe and well-tolerated procedure allowing endoscopic therapy. Selection of indications increases its diagnostic yield. Context: MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small noncoding RNAs, functioning as antisense regulators of gene expression by targeting mRNA and contributing to cancer development and progression. More than 50% of miRNA genes are located in cancer-associated genomic regions or in fragile sites of the genome. Objective: The aim of the study was to analyze the differential expression of let-7a, miR-15a, miR-16, miR-21, miR-141, miR-143, miR-145, and miR-150 in corticotropinomas and normal pituitary tissue and verify whether their profile of expression correlates with tumor size or remission after treatment. Material and Methods: ACTH-secreting pituitary tumor samples were obtained during transphenoidal surgery from patients with Cushing disease and normal pituitary tissues from autopsies. The relative expression of miRNAs was measured by real-time PCR using RNU44 and RNU49 as endogenous controls. Relative quantification of miRNA expression was calculated using the 2(-Delta Delta Ct) method. Results: We found underexpression of miR-145 (2.0-fold; P = 0.04), miR-21 (2.4-fold; P = 0.004), miR-141 (2.6-fold; P = 0.02), let-7a (3.3-fold; P = 0.003), miR-150 (3.8-fold; P = 0.04), miR-15a (4.5-fold; P = 0.03), miR-16 (5.0-fold; P = 0.004), and miR-143 (6.4-fold; P = 0.004) in ACTH-secreting pituitary tumors when compared to normal pituitary tissues. There were no differences between miRNA expression and tumor size as well as miRNA expression and ratio of remission after surgery, except in patients presenting lower miR-141 expression who showed a better chance of remission. Conclusion: Our results support the possibility that altered miRNA expression profile might be involved in corticotrophic tumorigenesis. However, the lack of knowledge about miRNA target genes postpones full understanding of the biological functions of down-regulated or up-regulated miRNAs in corticotropinomas. Individual differences in drug efficacy or toxicity can be influenced by genetic factors. We investigated whether polymorphisms of pharmacogenes that interfere with metabolism of drugs used in conditioning regimen and graft-versus-host disease (GvHD) prophylaxis could be associated with outcomes after HLA-identical hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). Pharmacogenes and their polymorphisms were studied in 107 donors and patients with leukemia receiving HSCT. Candidate genes were: P450 cytochrome family (CYP2B6), glutathione-S-transferase family (GST), multidrug-resistance gene, methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) and vitamin D receptor (VDR). The end points studied were oral mucositis (OM), hemorrhagic cystitis (HC), toxicity and venoocclusive disease of the liver (VOD), GvHD, transplantation-related mortality (TRM) and survival. Multivariate analyses, using death as a competing event, were performed adjusting for clinical factors. Among other clinical and genetic factors, polymorphisms of CYP2B6 genes that interfere with cyclophosphamide metabolism were associated with OM (recipient CYP2B6*4; P=0.0067), HC (recipient CYP2B6*2; P=0.03) and VOD (donor CYP2B6*6; P=0.03). Recipient MTHFR polymorphisms (C677T) were associated with acute GvHD (P=0.03), and recipient VDR TaqI with TRM and overall survival (P=0.006 and P=0.04, respectively). Genetic factors that interfere with drug metabolisms are associated with treatment-related toxicities, GvHD and survival after HLA-identical HSCT in patients with leukemia and should be investigated prospectively.
