Avoiding crimes of obedience: A comparative study of the autobiographies of M. K. Gandhi, N. Mandela and M. L. King

This research aims to provide a contribution towards understanding how and why certain people can display disobedience behaviors, to overcome unjust situations, and withstand persecutions deployed by authority. The paper presents a hermeneutic content analysis of the autobiographical speeches and texts of Gandhi, M. L. King and Mandela. Our results show that parents' value orientation, experience of injustice during childhood and exploration of alternative viewpoints during adolescence play a crucial role in structuring prosocial disobedience. Findings show also that social responsibility and ingroup communication are important conditions for facing persecutions without dropping original goals.

Risk reduction practices in men who have sex with men in Switzerland: serosorting, strategic positioning, and withdrawal before ejaculation.

The aim of this study was to identify predictors of intentional use of the HIV risk reduction practices of serosorting, strategic positioning, and withdrawal before ejaculation during unprotected anal intercourse (UAI) with casual partners. A cross-sectional survey pertaining to the Swiss HIV behavioral surveillance system, using an anonymous self-administered questionnaire, was conducted in 2007 in a self-selected sample of men having sex with other men (MSM). Analysis was restricted to participants with UAI with casual partner(s) (N = 410). Logistic regression was used to estimate factors associated with intentional use of serosorting, strategic positioning, and withdrawal before ejaculation. In the previous 12 months, 71% of participants reported having UAI with a casual partner of different or unknown HIV-status. Of these, 47% reported practicing withdrawal, 38% serosorting, and 25% strategic positioning. In the 319 participants with known HIV-status, serosorting was associated with frequent Internet use to find partners (OR = 2.32), STI (OR = 2.07), and HIV testing in the past 12 months (OR = 1.81). Strategic positioning was associated with HIV-status (OR = 0.13) and having UAI with a partner of different or unknown HIV-status (OR = 3.57). Withdrawal was more frequently practiced by HIV-negative participants or participants reporting high numbers of sexual partners (OR = 2.48) and having UAI with a partner of unknown or different serostatus (OR = 2.08). Risk reduction practices are widely used by MSM, each practice having its own specificities. Further research is needed to determine the contextual factors surrounding harm reduction practices, particularly the strategic or opportunistic nature of their use.

Performance assessment and league tables. Comparing like with like

We formulate performance assessment as a problem of causal analysis and outline an approach based on the missing data principle for its solution. It is particularly relevant in the context of so-called league tables for educational, health-care and other public-service institutions. The proposed solution avoids comparisons of institutions that have substantially different clientele (intake).

Investigación del recurso potencial langostino rojo de profundidad a bordo del BIC Fridtjof Nansen (25 de abril - 25 de mayo, 1990)

Describe las actividades desplegadas en el crucero 9004-05 del BIC "Fridtjof Nansen", se realizaron 24 arrastres en el área comprendida entre 03°41,8 '-03°49,4´S y 81°24,7 'W, en profundidades de 540 a 880 m, con la finalidad de seleccionar las especies de crustáceos con posibilidades de explotación a nivel comercial, así como determinar sus índices de abundancia, biomasa, proporción sexual, relación longitud-ancho del cefalotórax, relación longitud-peso y algunas variaciones morfométricas. Se analizaron también, las condiciones oceanográficas del hábitat.

Internet use by patients with psychiatric disorders in search for general and medical informations

BACKGROUND: Internet is commonly used by the general population, notably for health information-seeking. There has been little research into its use by patients treated for a psychiatric disorder. AIM: To evaluate the use of internet by patients with psychiatric disorders in searching for general and medical information. METHODS: In 2007, 319 patients followed in a university hospital psychiatric out-patient clinic, completed a 28-items self-administered questionnaire. RESULTS: Two hundred patients surveyed were internet users. Most of them (68.5%) used internet in order to find health-related information. Only a small part of the patients knew and used criteria reflecting the quality of contents of the websites consulted. Knowledge of English and private Internet access were the factors significantly associated with the search of information on health on Internet. CONCLUSIONS: Internet is currently used by patients treated for psychiatric disorders, especially for medical seeking information.

Evaluation of a topical cyclosporine A prodrug on corneal graft rejection in rats.

PURPOSE: To assess the efficacy of a topical cyclosporine A (CsA), water-soluble prodrug, for promoting the survival of allogenic rat corneal grafts after penetrating keratoplasty (PKP). METHODS: Corneas of Brown-Norway rats (donors) were transplanted to Lewis rats (recipients). Transplanted rats were divided in three treatment groups: group I (PBS) and group II (0.26% Debio088) received drops five times per day. Group III received a daily intramuscular CsA injection (10 mg/kg/day). Blood CsA concentrations were measured on days 2 and 14. On day 4, 10, 13 after PKP, grafts were scored for corneal transparency, edema and extent of neovascularization. An opacity score of greater than or equal to 3 was considered as a nonreversible graft rejection process. On day 14, the experimental eyes were processed for histology. RESULTS: On day 13, 12 of the 18 corneal transplants (67%) in group I showed irreversible graft rejection. Three of 18 transplants (19%) in group II and 5 of 16 transplants (28%) in group III showed irreversible graft rejection (p=0.013/p=0.019, OR=0.14/0.06 versus vehicle). Each mean clinical score for edema, opacity, and neovessels in group II were significantly lower than those of the grafts in group I (respectively p=0.010, p=0.013, p=0.024) and III except for neovessels (respectively p=0.002, p=0.001, p=0.057). Histology confirmed the clinical results. The mean CsA blood levels for groups II and III were, respectively 54+/-141 mug/l and 755+/-319 mug/l on day 2 and 14+/-34 mug/l and 1318+/-463 mug/l on day 14. CONCLUSIONS: Debio088 CsA prodrug drops given five times daily are as effective as intramuscular injection of 10 mg/kg/day for the prevention of acute corneal graft rejection in rats.

Escoamento Anual: distribuição estatística

O escoamento anual numa secção de um rio tem, essencialmente, uma natureza aleatória, não sendo, portanto, possível prever, deterministicamente, os seus valores futuros a partir do conhecimento de uma amostra de valores já ocorridos. Pode, pois, ser considerado uma variável aleatória. Tem-se considerado que os valores do escoamento anual são independentes no tempo, uma vez que a influência do escoamento do ano anterior sobre o do ano seguinte é, para o clima português, praticamente eliminada através da adopção do ano hidrológico e a existência de ciclos plurianuais não foi demonstrada de modo irrefutável, (QUINTELA,1967). Assim, os valores assumidos pelo escoamento anual numa sequência de anos hidrológicos constituem um vector de amostragem aleatório, sendo, portanto, as suas componentes independentes entre si. Sendo o escoamento anual uma variável aleatória, importa estudar a lei de distribuição respectiva. O método seguido consiste em adoptar o tipo de lei estatística que promova o melhor ajustamento entre as frequências dos valores observados e as correspondentes probabilidades, determinadas pela referida lei estatística.
