Kymmenkunta vuotta sitten monessa Suomen kunnassa jouduttiin suureen nimeämistyöhön, kun kuntien keskusjärjestöt suosittivat osoitejärjestelmän luomista myös haja-asutusalueille. Kunnille annetut ohjeet käsittelivät lähinnä osoitejärjestelmän teknistä toteuttamista, eikä nimistönsuunnittelun vaativuutta tajuttu. Tärkein asia eli teiden nimeäminen jäi lähes täysin kunnallisten virkamiesten ja poliitikkojen harkinnan varaan. Varsinkin kaksikielisissä kunnissa jouduttiin hankaluuksiin: tiennimet piti luoda kahdella kielellä, vaikka vanha paikannimistö olisi yksikielistä. Tilannetta mutkisti se, että nimistönsuunnittelun suhtautuminen vanhan paikannimistön kääntämiseen ja mukauttamiseen oli murroksessa juuri osoitteistamisprosessin alussa, eikä uusia periaatteita tuotu selvästi julki ennen 1990-luvun puoliväliä. Vielä 1980-luvulla paikannimien kääntämistä ja mukauttamista suositeltiin, mutta nykyään pidetään jo selvänä, että vanhaa paikannimistöä ei pidä perusteetta muokata vaan sitä voidaan käyttää sellaisenaan. Käypiä nimiä ovat siis niin Kråköntie kuin Koivulavägen. Porvoon maalaiskunnassa nimeämistyö aloitettiin vuonna 1989. Hankkeelle määrättiin virkamiesvalmistelija, joka työskenteli yhdessä toimikunnan kanssa. Tiekunnat saivat ehdottaa teilleen nimiä, ja valtaosaehdotuksista otettiinkin huomioon, mutta alkuvaiheessa lähes kaikki ruotsinkieliset paikannimet käännettiin tai mukautettiin. Koska toimikunnan jäsenillä ei ollut asiantuntemusta, nimien käännökset olivat usein epäonnistuneita ja oikeinkirjoitus horjui. Nähtävilläolon jälkeen alkuvuonna 1991 toimikunta päätti turvautua Kotimaisten kielten tutkimuskeskuksen apuun. Tiekunnat eivät hyväksyneet käännöksiä ja mukaelmia, joten ne neuvojen jälkeen poistettiin. Myöhemmin käännökset palautettiin luontonimiin perustuviin tiennimiin, mutta suurimmalta osalta vanha nimistö säilyi muuttamattomana. Emmintöjen jälkeen kunnanhallitus hyväksyi nimistön syksyllä 1995. Suurin osa Porvoon maalaiskunnan 790:stä haja-asutusalueen tiennimestä perustuu vanhaan paikannimistöön (81 %) tai on muuten paikkaan liittyvää (15 %). Vain pieni osa nimistä (4 %) on harkinnaisia.Vanhaan paikannimistöön perustuvissa tiennimissä on eniten tilannimen (41 %), maastonimen (26 %) ja kylännimen (14 %) sisältäviä nimiä. Yleisimmät jälkiosat ovat tie (86 %), kuja (5 %) ja polku (5 %). Määriteosaltaan tyystin suomenkielisiä nimipareista on 14 % (Aholantie-Aholavägen) ja ruotsinkielisiä 36 % (Bodöntie-Bodövägen). Tiekuntien nimet ja uudet tiennimet ovat eri asioita, mutta noin kolmannes uusista tiennimistä sisältää tiekunnan nimessä esiintyvän nimen. Näin Porvoon maalaiskunnan tiekuntien nimissä esiintyvistä 252 määriteosasta 193:a (77 %) on hyödynnetty 245 uudessa tiennimessä. Ennen tiennimiä osoitteissa käytettiin yleensä vain postinumeroa ja postitoimipaikkaa. Jonkin verran käytössä oli myös osoitenimiä (esim. Björkebo, Kappeli). Niistäkin valtaosa (73 %) esiintyy uusissa tiennimissä. Laskelma pohjautuu postin osoitetietojärjestelmään. Uusi tiennimistö perustuu usein jo käytössä oleviin tien- ja paikannimiin, joten se ei uhkaa vanhan nimistön asemaa. Uuden nimistön vaikutusta vähentää sekin, että sitä tarvitsevat lähinnä ulkopuoliset. Kotitienoot hahmotetaan edelleenkin vanhojen ja vakiintuneiden paikannimien avulla, mutta toki uudet tiennimet tuovat esiin monia vähän käytettyjä paikannimiä ja tarjoavat mainion katsauksen seudun kulttuuriperintöön. Ei siis ole samantekevää, miten teitä nimetään. Huonoiksi koetut uudet nimet eivät välttämättä edes vakiinnu käyttöön. Porvoon maalaiskunnan tulosten vertaaminen koko Suomen kattavaan materiaaliin osoittaa hankkeen edenneen hitaasti, mutta kaksikielisyyden ja työvoiman vähyyden huomioon ottaen kohtalaisesti. Vertailu kuuden muun uusmaalaisen kunnan kanssa paljastaa eroja paitsi hankkeen toteuttamistavoissa myös työn tuloksessa eli nimistössä. Yleensä tiekunnat ja asukkaat ovat saaneet tehdä ehdotuksia ja nimistön ovat laatineet virkamiehet ja nimitoimikunnat ilman palkattua asiantuntijaa. Kotimaisten kielten tutkimuskeskuksen puoleen on sentään käännytty. Tärkeä havainto on se, että kaksikieliset kunnat ovat halunneet vaalia kulttuuriarvoja ja säilyttää keskeisen vanhan paikannimistönsä koskemattomana. In 2001, an incursion of Mycosphaerella fijiensis, the causal agent of black Sigatoka, was detected in Australia's largest commercial banana growing region, the Tully Banana Production Area in North Queensland. An intensive surveillance and eradication campaign was undertaken which resulted in the reinstatement of the disease-free status for black Sigatoka in 2005. This was the first time black Sigatoka had ever been eradicated from commercial plantations. The success of the eradication campaign was testament to good working relationships between scientists, growers, crop monitors, quarantine regulatory bodies and industry. A key contributing factor to the success was the deployment of a PCR-based molecular diagnostic assay, developed by the Cooperative Research Centre for Tropical Plant Protection (CRCTPP). This assay complemented morphological identification and allowed high throughput diagnosis of samples facilitating rapid decision-making during the eradication campaign. This paper describes the development and successful deployment of molecular diagnostics for black Sigatoka. Shortcomings in the gel-based assay are discussed and the advantages of highly specific real-time PCR assays, capable of differentiating between Mycosphaerella fijiensis, Mycosphaerella musicola and Mycosphaerella eumusae are outlined. Real-time assays may provide a powerful diagnostic tool for applications in surveillance, disease forecasting and resistance testing for Sigatoka leaf spot diseases.

This paper describes a study to identify those factors which control the persistence of the Subtropical legume Stylosanthes hippocampoides, formerly S. guianensis cv. Oxley (fine stem stylo). The dynamics of S. hippocampoides populations was recorded in permanent quadrats at 2 stocking rates in a grazing study conducted between 1987 and 1992 in south-eastern Queensland. Density of mature plants fluctuated between 10 and 60 plants/m(2) during the 5 years with the major contributing factors being variations in seedling recruitment and survival, which, in turn, reflected the size of the soil seed bank and seasonal rainfall. Plant density was consistently higher at the lower stocking rate of 1 beast/1.5 ha compared with 1 beast/1 ha; however, the effect of stocking rate was minor compared with fluctuation due to seasonal variation in rainfall. The maximum life span of the original plants exceeded 5 years, while the survival of seedling cohorts was strongly impacted by seasonal rainfall. Total exclosure from grazing during summer increased the size of the soil seed bank although a precise time period during summer was not identified, while grazing at the lower stocking pressure produced the same outcome. It was concluded that the large seasonal variation that occurs in S. hippocampoides density is driven by large seasonal variation in seedling recruitment, which, in turn, is influenced by the size of the soil seed bank.

This review of grader grass (Themeda quadrivalvis) attempts to collate current knowledge and identify knowledge gaps that may require further research. Grader grass is a tropical annual grass native to India that is now spread throughout many of the tropical regions of the world. In Australia, it has spread rapidly since its introduction in the 1930s and is now naturalised in the tropical areas of Queensland, the Northern Territory and Western Australia and extends south along the east coast to northern New South Wales. It is a vigorous grass with limited palatability, that is capable of invading native and improved pastures, cropping land and protected areas such as state and national parks. Grader grass can form dense monocultures that reduce biodiversity, decrease animal productivity and increase the fire hazard in the seasonally dry tropics. Control options are based on herbicides, grazing management and slashing, while overgrazing appears to favour grader grass. The effect of fire on grader grass is inconclusive and needs to be defined. Little is known about the biology and impacts of grader grass in agricultural and protected ecosystems in Australia. In particular, information is needed on soil seed bank longevity, seed production, germination and growth, which would allow the development of management strategies to control this weedy grass.

QTL mapping methods for complex traits are challenged by new developments in marker technology, phenotyping platforms, and breeding methods. In meeting these challenges, QTL mapping approaches will need to also acknowledge the central roles of QTL by environment interactions (QEI) and QTL by trait interactions in the expression of complex traits like yield. This paper presents an overview of mixed model QTL methodology that is suitable for many types of populations and that allows predictive modeling of QEI, both for environmental and developmental gradients. Attention is also given to multi-trait QTL models which are essential to interpret the genetic basis of trait correlations. Biophysical (crop growth) model simulations are proposed as a complement to statistical QTL mapping for the interpretation of the nature of QEI and to investigate better methods for the dissection of complex traits into component traits and their genetic controls.

Field studies were conducted at two locations in southern Queensland, Australia during the 2003-2004 and 2004-2005 growing seasons to determine the differential competitiveness of sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L. Moench) cultivars and crop densities against weeds and the sorghum yield loss due to weeds. Weed competition was investigated by growing sorghum in the presence or absence of a model grass weed, Japanese millet (Echinochloa esculenta). The correlation analyses showed that the early growth traits (height, shoot biomass, and daily growth rate of the shoot biomass) of sorghum adversely affected the height, biomass, and seed production of millet, as measured at maturity. "MR Goldrush" and "Bonus MR" were the most competitive cultivars, resulting in reduced weed biomass, weed density, and weed seed production. The density of sorghum also had a significant effect on the crop's ability to compete with millet. When compared to the density of 4.5 plants per m2, sorghum that was planted at 7.5 plants per m2 suppressed the density, biomass, and seed production of millet by 22%, 27% and 38%, respectively. Millet caused a significant yield loss in comparison with the weed-free plots. The combined weed-suppressive effects of the competitive cultivars, such as MR Goldrush, and high crop densities minimized the yield losses from the weeds. These results indicate that sorghum competition against grass weeds can be improved by choosing competitive cultivars and by using a high crop density of > 7.5 plants per m2. These non-chemical options should be included in an integrated weed management program for better weed management, particularly where the control options are limited by the evolution of herbicide resistance.

A workshop held in Ballina (NSW, Australia) during 5–7 August 2005 in association with the XXII IUFRO World Congress, sought to quantify the potential of mixtures to sustain and enhance the growth and productivity, soil fertility, tree and stand health, wood quality, and economics of polyculture plantations. Participants were specifically asked to address whether demonstrable productivity gains in mixed-species plantations, compared with monoculture plantations, could make mixtures a commercially attractive option. We specifically sought to attract presentations addressing the operational challenges of making mixed-species plantations practical and successful, and attracted representatives from several industrial plantation agencies.

pBR322 form V DNA is a highly torsionally strained molecule with a linking number of zero. We have used sequence- specific DNA methylases as probes for B-DNA in this molecule, exploiting the inability of methylases to methylate single-stranded DNA and Z-DNA, both of which are known to occur in form V DNA. Some sequences in form V DNA were shown to be totally in the B-form, others were totally in an altered, unmethylatable conformation, while still other sites appeared to exist partly in altered and partly in normal B-conformation. Some potential Z-forming sequences (alternating pyrimidine/purine) of less than seven base-pairs were not in the Z conformation in form V DNA, whereas others did adopt an altered structure, indicating a modulating influence of flanking sequences. Furthermore, regions of imperfect alternating pyrimidine/purine structure were sometimes capable of adopting an altered structure. In addition, some regions of altered structure had no apparent Z-forming sequences, nor were they in polypurine stretches, which have also been proposed to form left-handed DNA. These non-B-DNA conformations may represent novel left-handed helical structures or sequences that become single stranded under torsional strain. Long regions of either altered (unmethylatable) DNA or B-DNA were not always observed. In fact, one region showed three transitions between B-like DNA and altered structure within 26 base-pairs.

Vapour species effusing from a magnesia Knudsen cell containing Mg-Zn alloy at 923 K were condensed on a water cooled copper plate. The equilibrium composition of the vapour phase over the alloy was determined from chemical analysis of the condensate. The activity coefficients of both components in the alloy have been derived from the data using a modified Gibbs-Duhem relation. The ratio of saturation vapour pressures of pure Zn and Mg obtained from the analysis of alloy data agree well with values from the literature, providing an internal check on the accuracy of data obtained in this study. Both components of the alloy exhibit negative deviations from Raoult's law. The concentration-concentration structure factor of Bhatia and Thomton at zero wave vector, evaluated from the measurements, indicate the presence of MgZn2 type complex in the liquid state. The associated regular solution model has been used for the thermodynamic description of liquid Mg-Zn alloys.

Genome-wide association studies show strong evidence of association with endometriosis for markers on chromosome 1p36 spanning the potential candidate genes WNT4, CDC42 and LINC00339. WNT4 is involved in development of the uterus, and the expression of CDC42 and LINC00339 are altered in women with endometriosis. We conducted fine mapping to examine the role of coding variants in WNT4 and CDC42 and determine the key SNPs with strongest evidence of association in this region. We identified rare coding variants in WNT4 and CDC42 present only in endometriosis cases. The frequencies were low and cannot account for the common signal associated with increased risk of endometriosis. Genotypes for five common SNPs in the region of chromosome 1p36 show stronger association signals when compared with rs7521902 reported in published genome scans. Of these, three SNPs rs12404660, rs3820282, and rs55938609 were located in DNA sequences with potential functional roles including overlap with transcription factor binding sites for FOXA1, FOXA2, ESR1, and ESR2. Functional studies will be required to identify the gene or genes implicated in endometriosis risk.

The implementation of CSP-S (a subset of CSP)—a high level language for distributed programming—is presented in this paper. The language CSP-S features a parallel command, communication by message passing and the use of guarded command. The implementation consists of a compiler translating the CSP-S constructs into intermediate language. The execution is carried out by a scheduler which creates an illusion of concurrency. Using the CSP-S language constructs, distributed algorithms are written, executed and tested with the compiler designed.

This RIRDC publication reports the findings and recommendations of the RIRDC funded study, "Fabrication of Electronic Materials from Australian Essential Oils". This project was undertaken to facilitate an expansion of the Australian Essential Oils Industry through the development of novel applications in the Electronic and Bio-Materials Industries. The findings presented in this report will provide value broadly across the Australian Essential Oils Industry, and more particularly to the growers involved in the production of tea tree, lavender and other essential oils. Several essential oils, namely tea tree oil, sandalwood oil, eucalyptus oil, alpha-pinene, d-limonene, lavender oil (a separate PhD project) and five major components of tea tree oil were tested. With the exception of sandalwood oil, all oils investigated were successfully polymerised. Importantly, this project determined that it is possible to use an environmentally friendly, inexpensive process of polymerisation to fabricate materials from essential oils in a reproducible manner with properties required by the optics, electronics, protective coatings, and bio-material industries.
