We present a numerical scheme for solving the time-independent nonlinear Gross-Pitaevskii equation in two dimensions describing the Bose-Einstein condensate of trapped interacting neutral atoms at zero temperature. The trap potential is taken to be of the harmonic-oscillator type and the interaction both attractive and repulsive. The Gross-Pitaevskii equation is numerically integrated consistent with the correct boundary conditions at the origin and in the asymptotic region. Rapid convergence is obtained in all cases studied. In the attractive case there is a limit Co the maximum number of atoms in the condensate. (C) 2000 Published by Elsevier B.V. B.V. All rights reserved.

Cooper pairing is studied in three dimensions to determine its binding energy for all coupling using a general separable interfermion interaction. Also considered are Cooper pairs (CPs) with nonzero center-of-mass momentum (CMM). A coupling-independent linear term in the CMM dominates the pair excitation energy in weak coupling and/or high fermion density, while the more familiar quadratic term prevails only in the extreme low-density (i.e., vacuum) limit for any nonzero coupling. The linear-to-quadratic crossover of the CP dispersion relation is analyzed numerically, and is expected to play a central role in a model of superconductivity (and superfluidity) simultaneously accommodating a Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer condensate as well as a Bose-Einstein condensate of CP bosons. The effect of continuous emission hypothesis on the two-pion Bose-Einstein correlation is discussed and compared with the corresponding results based on the usual freeze-out ansatz. Sizable differences in the correlation function are observed when comparing these two scenarios of the decoupling process. They could lead to entirely different interpretation of properties of the hot matter formed in high-energy heavy-ion collisions.

Using the mean-field time-dependent Gross-Pitaevskii equation we study the formation of a repulsive Bose-Einstein condensate on a combined optical and harmonic traps in two and three dimensions and subsequent generation of the interference pattern upon the removal of the combined traps as in the experiment by, Greiner et al. [Nature (London 415 (2002) 39]. For optical traps of moderate strength, interference pattern of 27 (9) prominent bright spots is found to be formed in three. (two) dimensions on a cubic (square) lattice in agreement with experiment. Similar interference pattern can also be formed upon removal of the optical lattice trap only. The pattern so formed can oscillate for a long time in the harmonic trap which can be observed experimentally. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. B.V. All rights reserved.

The effects of trimer continuum resonances are considered in the three-body recombination rate of a Bose system at finite energies for large and negative two-body scattering lengths (a). The thermal average of the rate allows to apply our formula to Bose gases at ultra-low temperatures. We found a good quantitative description of the experimental three-body recombination length of cesium atoms to deeply bound molecules up to 500 nK. Consistent with the experimental data, the increase of the temperature moves the resonance peak of the three-body recombination rate to lower values of vertical bar a vertical bar exhibiting a saturation behavior. Using the complete numerical solution of a time-dependent three-dimensional rnean-field model we study the Josephson oscillation of a superfluid Fermi gas (SFG) at zero temperature formed in a combined axially-symmetric harmonic plus one-dimensional periodic optical-lattice (OL) potentials after displacing the harmonic trap along the axial OL axis. We study the dependence of Josephson frequency on the strength of the OL potential. The Josephson frequency decreases with increasing strength as found in the experiment of Cataliotti et al. [Science 293, 843 (2001)] for a Bose-Einstein condensate and of the experiment of Pezze et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 93, 120401 (2004)] for an ideal Fermi gas. We demonstrate a breakdown of Josephson oscillation in the SFG for a large displacement of the harmonic trap. These features of Josephson oscillation of a SFG can be tested experimentally.

The effect of the continuous emission hypothesis on the two-pion Bose-Einstein correlation function is discussed and compared with the corresponding results based on the usual freeze-out. Sizable differences in the correlation function appear in these different descriptions of the decoupling process. This means that, when extracting properties of the hot matter formed in high-energy heavy-ion collisions from the data, completely different conclusions may be reached according to the description of the particle emission process adopted.

In this work, we have applied sub-Doppler laser cooling to a K-39 magneto-optical trap in order to load a 1071 nm crossed optical dipole trap. The number of atoms loaded into the dipole trap was characterized as a function of the frequency and intensity of the cooling and repump laser beams. For the optimum conditions, the dipole trap has about 2 x 10(6) atoms at an atomic density of 2 x 10(12) cm(-3), with a temperature of about 10 mu K. This technique is a very simple procedure to load a K-39 optical dipole trap without a previous magnetic evaporative cooling step and may find application in other atomic physic systems.

Solitons in the Skyrme-Faddeev model on R-2 x S-1 are shown to undergo buckling transitions as the circumference of the S-1 is varied. These results support a recent conjecture that solitons in this field theory are well-described by a much simpler model of elastic rods.

It is a well-established fact that statistical properties of energy-level spectra are the most efficient tool to characterize nonintegrable quantum systems. The statistical behavior of different systems such as complex atoms, atomic nuclei, two-dimensional Hamiltonians, quantum billiards, and noninteracting many bosons has been studied. The study of statistical properties and spectral fluctuations in interacting many-boson systems has developed interest in this direction. We are especially interested in weakly interacting trapped bosons in the context of Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) as the energy spectrum shows a transition from a collective nature to a single-particle nature with an increase in the number of levels. However this has received less attention as it is believed that the system may exhibit Poisson-like fluctuations due to the existence of an external harmonic trap. Here we compute numerically the energy levels of the zero-temperature many-boson systems which are weakly interacting through the van der Waals potential and are confined in the three-dimensional harmonic potential. We study the nearest-neighbor spacing distribution and the spectral rigidity by unfolding the spectrum. It is found that an increase in the number of energy levels for repulsive BEC induces a transition from a Wigner-like form displaying level repulsion to the Poisson distribution for P(s). It does not follow the Gaussian orthogonal ensemble prediction. For repulsive interaction, the lower levels are correlated and manifest level-repulsion. For intermediate levels P(s) shows mixed statistics, which clearly signifies the existence of two energy scales: external trap and interatomic interaction, whereas for very high levels the trapping potential dominates, generating a Poisson distribution. Comparison with mean-field results for lower levels are also presented. For attractive BEC near the critical point we observe the Shnirelman-like peak near s = 0, which signifies the presence of a large number of quasidegenerate states.

Entrambe sono sfruttate nell'ambito dell'interazione radiazione materia a pochi fotoni o a pochi atomi (cavity QED e Atom boxes).
