Spin glasses are magnetic systems with conflicting and random interactions between the individual spins. The dynamics of spin glasses, as of structural glasses, reflect their complexity. Both in experimental and numerical work the relaxation below the freezing temperature depends strongly on the annealing conditions (aging) and, above the freezing point, relaxation in equilibrium is slow and non-exponential, In this Forum, observed characteristics of the dynamics were summarized and the physical models proposed to explain them were outlined. Peptidergic mechanisms influencing the resistance of the gastrointestinal vascular bed of the estuarine crocodile, Crocodylus porosus, were investigated. The gut was perfused in situ via the mesenteric and the celiac arteries, and the effects of different neuropeptides were tested using bolus injections. Effects on vascular resistance were recorded as changes in inflow pressures. Peptides found in sensory neurons [substance P, neurokinin A, and calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP)] all caused significant relaxation of the celiac vascular bed, as did vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP), another well-known vasodilator. Except for VIP, the peptides also induced transitory gut contractions. Somatostatin and neuropeptide Y (NPY), which coexist in adrenergic neurons of the C. porosus, induced vasoconstriction in the celiac vascular bed without affecting the gut motility. Galanin caused vasoconstriction and occasionally activated the gut wall. To elucidate direct effects on individual vessels, the different peptides were tested on isolated ring preparations of the mesenteric and celiac arteries. Only CGRP and VIP relaxed the epinephrine-precontracted celiac artery, whereas the effects on the mesenteric artery were variable. Somatostatin and NPY did not affect the resting tonus of these vessels, but somatostatin potentiated the epinephrine-induced contraction of the celiac artery. Immunohistochemistry revealed the existence and localization of the above-mentioned peptides in nerve fibers innervating vessels of different sizes in the gut region. These data support the hypothesis of an important role for neuropeptides in the control of the vascular bed of the gastrointestinal tract in C. porosus.

The low temperature electronic spectrum of Cu(II) doped Cs2ZrCl6 is reported. It is found that Cu(II) is incorporated as the square planar copper tetrachloride ion, CuCl42-, which substitutes at the Zr(IV) site in the Cs2ZrCl6 lattice. There is a complete absence of axial coordination. The optical spectrum shows vibronic structure with peak widths as small as 8 cm(-1), far narrower than previously seen for this ion. The energy of the observed transitions and the Franck-Condon intensity pattern suggest that there is a substantial relaxation of the host lattice about the impurity ion. The relative intensity of the magnetic dipole component of the bands appears to be considerably greater than for pure copper(II) compounds containing the CuCl42- ion. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. 1 Voltage-operated calcium channel (VOCC) antagonists are effective antihypertensive and antianginal agents but they also depress myocardial contractility. 2 We compared four L-type calcium channel antagonists, felodipine, nifedipine, amlodipine and verapamil and a relatively T-type selective calcium channel antagonist, mibefradil, on human and rat isolated tissue assays to determine their functional vascular to cardiac tissue selectivity (V/C) ratio. 3 The V/C ratio was calculated as the ratio of the IC50 value of the antagonist that reduced (by 50%) submaximally contracted (K+ 62 mM) human small arteries from the aortic vasa vasorum (vascular, V) mounted in a myograph and the IC50 value of the antagonist that reduced (-)-isoprenaline (6 nM) submaximally stimulated human right atrial trabeculae muscle (cardiac, C) mounted in organ chambers. 4 The average pIC(50) Values (-log IC50 M) for the human vascular preparations were felodipine 8.30, nifedipine 7.78, amlodipine 6.64, verapamil 6.26 and mibefradil 6.22. The average pIC(50) values for the cardiac muscle were felodipine 7.21, nifedipine 6.95, verapamil 6.91, amlodipine 5.94, and mibefradil 4.61. 5 The V/C ratio calculated as antilog [pIC(50)V-pIC(50)C] is thus mibefradil 41, felodipine 12, nifedipine 7, amlodipine 5 and verapamil 0.2. 6 In rat small mesenteric arteries the pIC(50) values for the five drugs were similar to the values for human vasa vasorum arteries contracted by K+ 62 mM. However for methoxamine (10 mu M) contraction in the rat arteries the pIC(50) values were lower for felodipine 7.24 and nifedipine 6.23, but similar for verapamil 6.13, amlodipine 6.28 and mibefradil 5.91. 7 In conclusion in the human tissue assays, the putative T-channel antagonist mibefradil shows the highest vascular to cardiac selectivity ratio; some 3 fold higher than the dihydropyridine, felodipine, and some 200 fold more vascular selective than the phenylalkylamine, verapamil. This favourable vascular to cardiac selectivity for mibefradil, from a new chemical class of VOCC antagonist, may be explained by its putative T-channel selectivity.

We present finite element simulations of temperature gradient driven rock alteration and mineralization in fluid saturated porous rock masses. In particular, we explore the significance of production/annihilation terms in the mass balance equations and the dependence of the spatial patterns of rock alteration upon the ratio of the roll over time of large scale convection cells to the relaxation time of the chemical reactions. Special concepts such as the gradient reaction criterion or rock alteration index (RAI) are discussed in light of the present, more general theory. In order to validate the finite element simulation, we derive an analytical solution for the rock alteration index of a benchmark problem on a two-dimensional rectangular domain. Since the geometry and boundary conditions of the benchmark problem can be easily and exactly modelled, the analytical solution is also useful for validating other numerical methods, such as the finite difference method and the boundary element method, when they are used to dear with this kind of problem. Finally, the potential of the theory is illustrated by means of finite element studies related to coupled flow problems in materially homogeneous and inhomogeneous porous rock masses. We derive analytical solutions for the three-dimensional time-dependent buckling of a non-Newtonian viscous plate in a less viscous medium. For the plate we assume a power-law rheology. The principal, axes of the stretching D-ij in the homogeneously deformed ground state are parallel and orthogonal to the bounding surfaces of the plate in the flat state. In the model formulation the action of the less viscous medium is replaced by equivalent reaction forces. The reaction forces are assumed to be parallel to the normal vector of the deformed plate surfaces. As a consequence, the buckling process is driven by the differences between the in-plane stresses and out of plane stress, and not by the in-plane stresses alone as assumed in previous models. The governing differential equation is essentially an orthotropic plate equation for rate dependent material, under biaxial pre-stress, supported by a viscous medium. The differential problem is solved by means of Fourier transformation and largest growth coefficients and corresponding wavenumbers are evaluated. We discuss in detail fold evolutions for isotropic in-plane stretching (D-11 = D-22), uniaxial plane straining (D-22 = 0) and in-plane flattening (D-11 = -2D(22)). Three-dimensional plots illustrate the stages of fold evolution for random initial perturbations or initial embryonic folds with axes non-parallel to the maximum compression axis. For all situations, one dominant set of folds develops normal to D-11, although the dominant wavelength differs from the Biot dominant wavelength except when the plate has a purely Newtonian viscosity. However, in the direction parallel to D-22, there exist infinitely many modes in the vicinity of the dominant wavelength which grow only marginally slower than the one corresponding to the dominant wavelength. This means that, except for very special initial conditions, the appearance of a three-dimensional fold will always be governed by at least two wavelengths. The wavelength in the direction parallel to D-11 is the dominant wavelength, and the wavelength(s) in the direction parallel to D-22 is determined essentially by the statistics of the initial state. A comparable sensitivity to the initial geometry does not exist in the classic two-dimensional folding models. In conformity with tradition we have applied Kirchhoff's hypothesis to constrain the cross-sectional rotations of the plate. We investigate the validity of this hypothesis within the framework of Reissner's plate theory. We also include a discussion of the effects of adding elasticity into the constitutive relations and show that there exist critical ratios of the relaxation times of the plate and the embedding medium for which two dominant wavelengths develop, one at ca. 2.5 of the classical Biot dominant wavelength and the other at ca. 0.45 of this wavelength. We propose that herein lies the origin of parasitic folds well known in natural examples.

We wish to report the detection of dimethyl sulfone (methylsulfonylmethane, C2H6O2S) in the brain of a normal 62-year-old male using in vivo proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy. The presence of this exogenous metabolite resulted from ingestion of a dietary supplement containing dimethyl sulfone. The concentration of this compound in the brain was measured to be 2.4 mmol, with a washout half life of approximately 7.5 days. The in vivo T-1 and T-2 relaxation times of dimethyl sulfone were measured to be 2180 ms and 385 ms, respectively. The concentration of major brain metabolites, namely N-acetylaspartate, total Creatine and Choline, and myo-Inositol were within normal limits. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science Inc. All rights reserved.

The three-dimensional solution structure of conotoxin TVIIA, a 30-residue polypeptide from the venom of the piscivorous cone snail Conus tulipa, has been determined using 2D H-1 NMR spectroscopy. TVIIA contains six cysteine residues which form a 'four-loop' structural framework common to many peptides from Conus venoms including the omega-, delta-, kappa-, and mu O-conotoxins. However, TVIIA does not belong to these well-characterized pharmacological classes of conotoxins, but displays high sequence identity with conotoxin GS, a muscle sodium channel blocker from Conus geographus. Structure calculations were based on 562 interproton distance restraints inferred from NOE data, together with 18 backbone and nine side-chain torsion angle restraints derived from spin-spin coupling constants. The final family of 20 structures had mean pairwise rms differences over residues 2-27 of 0.18 +/- 0.05 Angstrom for the backbone atoms and 1.39 +/- 0.33 Angstrom for all heavy atoms. The structure consists of a triple-stranded, antiparallel beta sheet with +2x, -1 topology (residues 7-9, 16-20 and 23-27) and several beta turns. The core of the molecule is formed by three disulfide bonds which form a cystine knot motif common to many toxic and inhibitory polypeptides. The global fold, molecular shape and distribution of amino-acid sidechains in TVIIA is similar to that previously reported for conotoxin GS, and comparison with other four-loop conotoxin structures provides further indication that TVIIA and GS represent a new and distinct subgroup of this structural family. The structure of TVIIA determined in this study provides the basis for determining a structure-activity relationship for these molecules and their interaction with target receptors.

1. Classical L-type voltage-operated calcium channel (VOCC) antagonists dilate blood vessels, depress myocardial contractility and slow cardiac conduction. 2. We compared four L-type VOCC antagonists and a novel tetralol derivative, mibefradil, reportedly 10-fold more selective for T- (transient) over L-type VOCC in two in vitro assays of human tissue, namely isolated small arteries from the aortic vasa vasorum in a myograph and right atrial trabeculae muscle under isometric force conditions. 3. In arteries contracted with K+ (62 mmol/L), the relaxation pIC(50) values for the VOCC antagonists felodipine, nifedipine, amlodipine, verapamil and mibefradil were 8.30, 7.78, 6.64, 6.26 and 6.22, respectively. In atrial trabeculae, the pIC(50) values to inhibit the inotropic response to a submaximal concentration of isoprenaline (6 nmol/L) for felodipine, nifedipine, verapamil, amlodipine and mibefradil were 7.21, 6.95, 6.91, 5.94 and 4.61, respectively. 4. Taking the anti-log (pIC(50) vessel - pIC(50) atrium) the vascular relaxation to cardiac depression potency ratios for mibefradil, felodipine, nifedipine, amlodipine and verapamil were 41, 12, 7, 5 and 0.22, respectively. 5. We conclude that, in human tissue assays, perhaps T- over L-type VOCC selectivity confers the most favourable vascular selectivity on mibefradil. Alternatively, splice variants of L-type VOCC in the vasculature (CaV1.2b) may be more sensitive to mibefradil than the splice variants in the heart (CaV1.2a).

H-1- and C-13-NMR spectroscopy and FT-Raman spectroscopy are used to investigate the properties of a polymer gel dosimeter post-irradiation. The polymer gel (PACT) is composed of acrylamide, N,N'-methylene-bisacrylamide, gelatin, and water. The formation of a polyacrylamide network within the gelatin matrix follows a dose dependence nonlinearly correlated to the disappearance of the double bonds from the dissolved monomers within the absorbed dose range of 0-50 Gy. The signal from the gelatin remains constant with irradiation. We show that the NMR spin-spin relaxation times (T-2) of PAGs irradiated to up to 50 Gy measured in a NMR spectrometer and a clinical magnetic resonance imaging scanner can be modeled using the spectroscopic intensity of the growing polymer network. More specifically, we show that the nonlinear T-2 dependence against dose can be understood in terms of the fraction of protons in three different proton pools. (C) 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

The nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spin-spin relaxation time (T-2) is related to the radiation-dependent concentration of polymer formed in polymer gel dosimeters manufactured from monomers in an aqueous gelatin matrix. Changes in T-2 with time post-irradiation have been reported in the literature but their nature is not fully understood. We investigated those changes with time after irradiation using FT-Raman spectroscopy and the precise determination of T-2 at high magnetic field in a polymer gel dosimeter, A model of fast exchange of magnetization taking into account ongoing gelation and strengthening of the gelatin matrix as well as the polymerization of the monomers with time is presented. Published data on the changes of T-2 in gelatin gels as a function of post-manufacture time are used and fitted closely by the model presented. The same set of parameters characterizing the variations of T-2 in gelatin gels and the increasing concentration of polymer determined from Fr-Raman spectroscopy are used successfully in the modelling of irradiated polymer gel dosimeters. Minimal variations in T-2 in an irradiated PAG dosimeter are observed after 13 h.

Off-resonance RF pre-saturation was used to obtain contrast in MRI images of polymer gel dosimeters irradiated to doses up to 50 Gy. Two different polymer gel dosimeters composed of 2-hydroxyethyl-acryl ate or methacrylic acid monomers mixed with N, N'-methylene-bisacrylamide (BIS), dispersed in an aqueous gelatin matrix were evaluated. Radiation-induced polymerization of the co-monomers generates a fast-relaxing insoluble polymer. Saturation of the polymer using off-resonance Gaussian RF pulses prior to a spin-echo read-out with a short echo time leads to contrast that is dependent on the absorbed dose. This contrast is attributed to magnetization transfer (MT) between free water and the polymer, and direct saturation of water was found to be negligible under the prevailing experimental conditions. The usefulness of MT imaging was assessed by computing the dose resolution obtained with this technique. We found a low value of dose resolution over a wide range of doses could be obtained with a single experiment. This is an advantage over multiple spin echo (MSE) experiments using a single echo spacing where an optimal dose resolution is achieved over only very limited ranges of doses. The results suggest MT imaging protocols may be developed into a useful tool for polymer gel dosimetry.

The extent of mixing in blends of poly(hydroxybutyrate-co-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV) (27% HV) and poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc) has been measured using a number of different techniques, principally solid-state NMR. Differential scanning calorimetry DSC measurements indicated effective mixing of the polymer chains on a scale of several nanometres. The results of H-1 T-1 and H-1 T-1rho. measurements confirm intimate mixing of the chains. A change on blending in the H-1 T-1rho, and the H-1 NMR line width of the signal from the protons of PVAc was consistent with an increase in the amplitude and frequency of motion of this component. The PVAc chains reside within the inter-lamellar space, as confirmed by spin diffusion measurements after H-1 T-1rho preparation. (C) 2003 Society of Chemical Industry.

We describe a method by which the decoherence time of a solid-state qubit may be measured. The qubit is coded in the orbital degree of freedom of a single electron bound to a pair of donor impurities in a semiconductor host. The qubit is manipulated by adiabatically varying an external electric field. We show that by measuring the total probability of a successful qubit rotation as a function of the control field parameters, the decoherence rate may be determined. We estimate various system parameters, including the decoherence rates due to electromagnetic fluctuations and acoustic phonons. We find that, for reasonable physical parameters, the experiment is possible with existing technology. In particular, the use of adiabatic control fields implies that the experiment can be performed with control electronics with a time resolution of tens of nanoseconds.

There is emerging evidence to support the effectiveness of cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) for older adults. However, there are a number of clinical difficulties that practitioners often encounter when using homework assignments with the older adult population. In this article, we provide a brief summary of the research findings on homework in CBT, review common obstacles to the use of homework, and provide concrete suggestions for the adaptation of homework assignments to increase their potential effectiveness with older adults. We also describe several types of homework assignments that may be most helpful, augmenting these suggestions with clinical examples.
