Sulfur in oceans and seas

The book summarizes results of long-term studies of sulfur geochemistry in bottom sediments of seas and oceans. Processes of hydrogen sulfide formation in bacterial reduction of sulfates, its transformation into transient and stable compounds of reduced sulfur in liquid and solid phases of sediments are under consideration. Regularities of distribution of sulfate and reduced sulfur in ocean sediments are shown. Problems of sulfur budget in the modern oceans are discussed.

Chemical composition of phosphorites, Fe-Mn nodules and crusts, and basalts from the West Pacific

The monograph gives the first systematic description of ore-bearing guyots from the West Pacific. It is mostly based on data obtained in numerous expeditions of Russian vessels during 1984-1992. Ore deposits located on upper parts of all slopes and tops of the guyots include phosphorites associated with cobalt- and platinum-rich ferromanganese crusts. Location, origin and prospecting of mineral deposits are discussed on the base of new data on metallogenic factors (geodynamics, tectonics, magmatism, sedimentation and morphostructures).

Physical properties, sedimentation rates, and accumulation rates of bottom sediments from the Laptev Sea collected during SPASIBA-91 Russian-French Program

Humidity and wet and dry bulk densities were determined for bottom sediments of the Lena River marginal filter within a 700 km section from the outer boundary of the river delta. Earlier determinations of suspended matter concentration in water, material and grain-size composition and age of sediments were made along the same section. Sediment matter fluxes (accumulation rates), their changes in space and time (about 14 ka) were inferred from measurements of physical parameters. A correlation was found between the physical parameters of bottom sediments and changes in the Lena river marginal filter including those caused by sea-level fluctuations.
