One minute of grief: Emotional processing in short-term dynamic psychotherapy for adjustment disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Depth of emotional processing has shown to be related to outcome across approaches to psychotherapy. Moreover, a specific emotional sequence has been postulated and tested in several studies on experiential psychotherapy (Pascual-Leone & Greenberg, 2007). This process-outcome study aims at reproducing the sequential model of emotional processing in psychodynamic psychotherapy for adjustment disorder and linking these variables with ultimate therapeutic outcome. METHOD: In this study, 32 patients underwent short-term dynamic psychotherapy. On the basis of reliable clinical change statistics, a subgroup (n = 16) presented with good outcome and another subgroup (n = 16) had a poor outcome in the end of treatment. The strongest alliance session of each case was rated using the observer-rated system Classification of Affective Meaning States. Reliability coefficients for the measure were excellent (κ = .82). RESULTS: Using 1 min as the fine-grained unit of analysis, results showed that the experience of fundamentally adaptive grief was more common in the in-session process of patients with good outcome, compared with those with poor outcomes (χ2 = 6.56, p = .01, d = 1.23). This variable alone predicted 19% of the change in depressive symptoms as measured by the Beck Depression Inventory at the end of treatment. Moreover, sequences of the original model were supported and related to outcome. CONCLUSIONS: These results are discussed within the framework of the sequential model of emotional processing and its possible relevance for psychodynamic psychotherapy. Stable one-step technetium-99m labeling of His-tagged recombinant proteins with a novel Tc(I)-carbonyl complex.

We have developed a technetium labeling technology based on a new organometallic chemistry, which involves simple mixing of the novel reagent, a 99m Tc(I)-carbonyl compound, with a His-tagged recombinant protein. This method obviates the labeling of unpaired engineered cysteines, which frequently create problems in large-scale expression and storage of disulfide-containing proteins. In this study, we labeled antibody single-chain Fv fragments to high specific activities (90 mCi/mg), and the label was very stable to serum and all other challenges tested. The pharmacokinetic characteristics were indistinguishable from iodinated scFv fragments, and thus scFV fragments labeled by the new method will be suitable for biodistribution studies. This novel labeling method should be applicable not only to diagnostic imaging with 99mTc, but also to radioimmunotherapy approaches with 186/188 Re, and its use can be easily extended to almost any recombinant protein or synthetic peptide.

Shambaugh edited this edition of a list of Iowa history topics, which originally was suggested by Miss Alice Tyler, Secretary of the Iowa Library Commission in 1907. It is also called Bulletin of Information Series, no. 7 published by the State Historical Society of Iowa. The subjects presented will give the reader a general knowledge of the more important facts and phases of Iowa's commonwealth history. Also included in this document are lists of authors of the articles sited, suggested courses of study or reading in Iowa history, the Governor's of Iowa, United State Senators from Iowa and a list of some of the important dates in early Iowa history.

One hundred base pairs of 5' flanking sequence of a vaccinia virus late gene are sufficient to temporally regulate late transcription.

A vaccinia virus late gene coding for a major structural polypeptide of 11 kDa was sequenced. Although the 5' flanking gene region is very A+T rich, it shows little homology either to the corresponding region of vaccinia early genes or to consensus sequences characteristic of most eukaryotic genes. Three DNA fragments (100, 200, and 500 base pairs, respectively), derived from the flanking region and including the late gene mRNA start site, were inserted into the coding sequence of the vaccinia virus thymidine kinase (TK) early gene by homologous in vivo recombination. Recombinants were selected on the basis of their TK- phenotype. Cells were infected with the recombinant viruses and RNA was isolated at 1-hr intervals. Transcripts initiating either from the TK early promoter, or from the late gene promoter at its authentic position, or from the translocated late gene promoters within the early gene were detected by nuclease S1 mapping. Early after infection, only transcripts from the TK early promoter were detected. Later in infection, however, transcripts were also initiated from the translocated late promoters. This RNA appeared at the same time and in similar quantities as the RNA from the late promoter at its authentic position. No quantitative differences in promoter efficiency between the 100-, 200-, and 500-base-pair insertions were observed. We conclude that all necessary signals for correct regulation of late-gene expression reside within only 100 base pairs of 5' flanking sequence.

Effective one-dimensional square well for two-dimensional quantum wires

The symmetrical two-dimensional quantum wire with two straight leads joined to an arbitrarily shaped interior cavity is studied with emphasis on the single-mode approximation. It is found that for both transmission and bound-state problems the solution is equivalent to that for an energy-dependent one-dimensional square well. Quantum wires with a circular bend, and with single and double right-angle bends, are examined as examples. We also indicate a possible way to detect bound states in a double bend based on the experimental setup of Wu et al.

Iowa’s house of education still has a strong foundation, but it is also in need of a major remodel to be ready for the days ahead.

Semiclassical evaluation of average nuclear one- and two-body matrix elements

Thomas-Fermi theory is developed to evaluate nuclear matrix elements averaged on the energy shell, on the basis of independent particle Hamiltonians. One- and two-body matrix elements are compared with the quantal results, and it is demonstrated that the semiclassical matrix elements, as function of energy, well pass through the average of the scattered quantum values. For the one-body matrix elements it is shown how the Thomas-Fermi approach can be projected on good parity and also on good angular momentum. For the two-body case, the pairing matrix elements are considered explicitly.

Deuteron properties using a truncated one-piox exchange potential

Deuteron properties are studied using the one-pion exchange potential truncated at a radius R, with a constant interior potential. The spectrum of bound states and their properties are put in evidence. We discuss the relation of this model to more realistic models of the nucleon-nucleon interaction.
